Power Mac G4 Cube! Why Didn't It Make A Bigger "Splash"?

I'm feeling nostalgic and want to discuss the now legendary (at least in my eyes) Power Mac G4 Cube. I remember this computer being something more than just "a computer". I saw it as Apple really pushing the boundaries of engineering art and design. Yes Steve blew everyone away with the introduction of the iMac in 1998, but personally I think the Cube at the beginning of the new millenium was when Apple really kicked hardware innovation into a higher gear.
But what puzzles me is why didn't the Cube make a bigger splash in the market than it did? Today most won't even know what it is except for the true Apple fans of the last 15 years. Usually Apple introduces a design language and it runs for a few years before any major revision or retirement. The Cube was introduced and was only around for a year.
I'd just like to know your thoughts on the Cube (maybe personal memories of owning one, if you did) in general and why it didn't make any real impact.
One question to ask would be why didn't the G4 Cube naturally evolve into a G5 Cube like the rest of Apple's lineup at the time?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Mac_G4_Cube

Hi, I seiously lusted after one, but insisted on waiting for the 500 MHz model, by the time they finally got the 500 out, I had spent the money, by the time I had the Money they were gone.
I think there were several reasons...
There werent many Mac users then.
Many thought a real computer had to be BIG.
The lack of upgradability was seen as a drawback by many.
It cost as much as a big computer of a different ilk.
One question to ask would be why didn't the G4 Cube naturally evolve into a G5 Cube like the rest of Apple's lineup at the time?
Same reason there were no G5 Laptops, mostly heat issues, though laptops had an additional power/battery problem... whole reason Apple went to Intel chips.

Apple will not & never has/does respond to questions like yours, so don't waste your time using the Feedback form to ask.
However, if you have a suggestion, you can use that form to make your suggestion. However, Apple will not respond.

  • Power Mac RAM Upgrade - Why not faster?

I just upgraded my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 from 1GB to 3GB with Crucial memory. The computer booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. The system recognizes the full 3GB. Problem is, I cannot tell the difference in speed, either by "seat of the pants" or by benchmark tests. XBench tested almost exactly the same either way (in fact, it was 1/2 point slower with the 3GB). I also compressed a 2-minute movie from iMovieHD into a Quicktime file. It took the same amount of time with either configuration.
Any thoughts? Is there a different comparison test I should try?
    Thanks.

    Hi
If you have sufficient memory for what you're doing, additional RAM will make little or no difference. You could try using Activity Monitor located in the Applications->Utilities folder to see how much memory is actually being used at any one time. The following document contains more info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
Artificial benchmarks probably won't detect any differences, as the memory footprint of the tests is probably minimal. Likewise movie compression is probably limited by the speed of the processors and/or hard drive more than it is by the amount of memory available.
You should be able to detect a difference when running several memory hungry applications at the same time and switching between them though. The boot up time may be slightly slower with more RAM as a POST (power on self test) is performed.

  • Should I get a new Mac Pro or a used Power Mac G5, and why?

I'm trying to decide which of these would be a better choice and better cost/benefit/value ratio.
I spend my time in Photoshop CS and Adobe Lightroom most of the time. I have NO intention of running Windows, so I wouldn't miss that by going with the G5.
    What are your thoughts?
    Here's a G5 that looks pretty tempting.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Dual-1-8-Ghz-4GB-1000GB-DVD-R-Maxed_W0QQi temZ190131690775QQihZ009QQcategoryZ51036QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is a lot of "maybe's" and big "if's" - there will ALWAYS be change and updates, and no one knows what or when. Just 'speculation'. Or, needed? not if someone things they would be happy with 4 yr old G5, they aren't worried about the next upgrade and leading edge.
I don't know that the Mac Pro is a year old. Then again, it hasn't changed. One new model configuration added.
As for "$1000 upgrades" that is a PLUS, not a MINUS as you can't even find video or stuff more memory, and limited on disk drives with the G5.
The G5 would turn in a score of less than half of 2GHz MP, more like 1/4 especially with stock 2.66. $1895 for Apple ref's @ www.apple.com for MP, too.
Do your shopping on Apple Store Specials, not ebay. A lot of G5s are showing their age and in need of some heavy cost fixes, PSU, failing video, logicboard ... and you may be out on a limb.

  • Power Mac G4 Cube boots fine in OS X, but not in OS 9

This is kind of a runoff of my other thread.
I've been trying to get Classic to work for quite a while now. My computer has OS X 10.4 on it, but I installed OS 9.0.4 off a disk for Classic. I have also downloaded the required updates to get to OS 9.1, but when I try to start in OS 9, the computer freezes up on the screen with the deceptively happy little smiling computer.
I have checked and confirmed that my computer is able to boot OS 9, so why won't it??

For one thing, you need to find out from the original person what happened to the disks. If they lost them, they may still be able to get them from AppleCare.
Since you are at least getting to the happy face, it sounds like an extension conflict. Try when restarting into Mac OS 9 from Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk to hold the shift key on startup. That will force it to start with no extensions. If that works, open Apple menu -> Control Panels -> Extensions Manager and set to Mac OS 9 base set and restart. Once that is done, you'll be able to upgrade your 9 to 9.2.2 from this article:

  • My Power Mac G4 Cube support ECC SDRAM...Weird ?!?!

Actually, I've accidentally plug in one 512mb 133 ECC SDRAM(mixed with 2 normal SDRAM) into my G4 Cube and turn it on. When I checked the System Profiler, I realized something weird, I then turn it off asap and check the RAM again because I worry something will mess up, and I confirmed it is a ECC SDRAM....
After that, I did ran some Openmark, Benchmarks, etc. to make sure the RAM runs no problem.....
Anyone got idea why ECC RAM will work on a G4 Cube?

Thanks for your informations~! I might try to ask some experts base on your info.
Someone just told me, some mother boards might be able to read both ECC & non-ECC RAM, however, the the factory/company just don't list it up in some cases, just because they might use the same mother board for different computer models(they will list it up when the model will actually use the ECC function), he also said the ECC function might be active when there's actually some errors come out, but he is not sure.
Also, I got an interesting result when I run the Benchmark with both ECC & non-ECC RAM. I run it 3 times of both of them, I got the same result. The one with ECC RAM got a better score, however, the Memory Bandwidth Performance is obviously lower when the ECC RAM is plugged in the slot. Does it prove the ECC RAM is actually slower in the same bus speed as a non-ECC RAM?

  • Where can I find a replacement acrylic case (maybe new?) for my Power Mac G4 Cube?

    Support Community,
I'm upgrading my Cube and while I'm at it, I'd like to replace the case. I bought it used and it came with those infamous stress cracks on the top and I'd really like to put this back into pristine condition. Does Apple still carry these cases as a replacement part? How about the mouse/keyboard/speakers? Anyone know of one of these NIB collecting dust on a shelf somewhere? Maybe, just maybe...
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Hello Jerry,
I found this on the web:   http://www.welovemacs.com/apg4cu50capa.html
They seem to have a variety of parts and I've purchased things from them in the past.  No complaints.

  • Why didn't Apple make it clear that if you upgrade to Mountain Lion on an older Mac, and want mirroring to work you were out of luck ?

I read the requirements to install Mountain Lion.  My system quilified, that is unless you wanted all the features to work.  Mirroring is not a "Key" feature that will work on older iMAC machines.  What a letdown for features I wanted to really work.

I feel really let down that my $2000+ i7 8gig MacBook Pro (mid 2010) can't mirror it's screen with AirPlay, but. $600 Mac mini (2011) can.
Really? Is wireless video *that* hard? I've been a long time Apple supporter, (1991) way before iAnything, and in those dark years up until now, I always made the point that Apple hardware had longevity. Of course my MacBook is still functional, built like a tank, and I'll get years out of it, but Apple dropping support for a top level machine so soon is unsettling.
I really, really wanted AirPlay, and bought Mountain Lion right away. It wasn't until later, while waiting for the download I noticed my beloved MacBook wasn't supported. Apple really should change their advertisements to make clear it's really only for brand new machines.

  • My Power Mac G4 Cube refuses to boot OS9.

Whenever I try to boot OS9, it goes to a blinking question mark.  It boots Tiger fine.  If I disconnect the internal hard drive and boot with the OS9 disc in the CD drive, then it sits at the ? folder screen before switching to the ? floppy screen.

    From your original post -
If I disconnect the internal hard drive and boot with the OS9 disc in the CD drive, then it sits at the ? folder screen before switching to the ? floppy screen.
That should work - any G4 should boot to a CD even when no hard drive is present.
Are you holding down the C key on the keyboard from the time the startup chimes go off? If so, is the keyboard the original one, or a newer one - some of the newer Apple ones are flagged as requiring certain versions of OS X as a minimum. Some non-Apple keyboards are not compatible with Mac startup keyboard commands.
The description you give sounds like the behavior when a CD is in the drive but the machine has not received an instruction to use it for booting. The solution in that case is to just wait - the machine will cycle through a preset sequence of looking for a bootable volume, and unfortunately on older machines the CD drive is near the last one in the sequence. Eventually it should find the CD, though might take more than 5 minutes to get there.
If you boot while holding the Option key down, does Startup Manager appear (bright blue screen with large icons)? If so, is there an icon for the CD?

It is beyond me that Blackberry and the Android phones have wifi calling and the new iphone 5 does not.  Why?  That should be standard in all phones.

Just left a message there.  Thanks.  I live and travel and work in poor coverage areas and have a mifi to cover me doing charge sales.  Sad that Apple won't let me talk in these areas too.

  • MB and Dual g5 power mac

    hey
i just want to see if any body nows how compatable my g5 power mac and a MB would be. i make music using logic, is there any chance of them running together or would be a case of having 2 computers. i woulld love to able to run them as 1 unit .
    dual g5 2.5 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't know how you do it, but I do know there is a way to link Macs in an "Xgrid" (see sharing in sys prefs) for linking them together to make a faster machine. I don't know if intels can work with PowerPC macs like that though.
Click Start to allow Xgrid controllers to distribute tasks for your computer to perform.

  • Power Mac G5 FW 800 Bad - Columubs, Indiana

    Hi,
Anyone living in Columbus, Indiana with a Power Mac G5 Machine that I can test my LaCie external Hard Drive on? Here's the problem. My Power Mac G5 doesn't reade my LaCie Bigger Disk when I use my FireWire 800 cable. It does however, read my LaCie Bigger Disk when I use the FireWire 400 cable, or my USB cable. So, either my Power Mac FireWire Port is bad or my LaCie Port is bad. I've tried two different FW Cables and have the same problem, so I know it's not the cable. On my LaCie I have two FW 800 ports and I have the same problem no matter which port I use. My guess is that my Power Mac 800 port is bad, but to make sure I need to plug my LaCie into another machine - iMac G5, or Power Mac G5.
To test my LaCie on another machine means driving up to Indy or Bloomington. I'd rather test it here in Columbus and if it's my computer then I'll make the drive to repair it....
Please contact me at: [email protected]
    Thanks,
    Tom
Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Feel sure you will have tried this - but just in case...
    From Macintouch:

    Mike Mihalik, LaCie
Seems like the FireWire issue needs to be revisited quite often. Here is my often repeated suggestion which appears to clear up many FireWire issues: reset the FireWire ports. Panther has a Finder Preference to show mounted volumes on the Desktop. You must set this for mounted drives to be visible. Please follow these instructions to reset your FireWire port.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
    Here is a summary:
    * shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports
    * use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive
    * shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery
    * let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes
    * reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
    * restart computer
    * verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler
    * reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible
    * confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
    * repeat for other drives, one at a time
