Power Mac G4 hard drive a goner?

Hello,
My Power Mac G4 "died" last Sunday. Initially, the it wouldn't start up at all. So, after reading some suggestions on the net (I have a Mac Book pro), I changed the battery.
It booted but the question mark folder came on. I couldn't even open the CD tray. Further reading had me use the command-option-F-O during start up and I finally got the install CD in.
I booted via the CD but when I went to utilities, my hard drive was nowhere to be found! It just showed the DVD drive and a USB flash drive that I had.
I called the local Mac service shop and he said that it would take from $50-1000 to diagnose and perhaps fix the problem.
Can I salvage my hard disk? Or is it a goner?
Thanks guys.

To start with, anyone who would give you such a ridiculous ballpark figure of $50-$1,000 to diagnose/repair a G4 with an AWOL hard drive has lost touch with reality. Depending on which model G4 that you have, its market value may be substantially less than the upper figure quoted. The fact that the hard drive isn't detected on the bus, would likely indicate that it has an electronic and/or mechanical problem. If either is the case, none of the software solutions ("DiskWarrior" or "Data Rescue") will work, because they require a mechanically-functioning hard drive. You can check the data ribbon cable for abrasions in the insulation that may have caused a short, but that's probably a long shot. You should also check that the power connection is plugged securely into the back of the drive, even though it's typically such a tight fit, that it rarely comes loose. The possibility of unexpected hard drive failure is the primary reason for routinely backing up the data, so you only need to worry about buying/installing a replacement. Professional data recovery companies can retrieve data from the most severely damaged hard drives, but the cost is quite expensive for the home computer user. If you don't have files on the hard drive that you need to retrieve, I'd suggest replacing it with a new one. If you post back with the G4 model/processor speed that you have, a compatible replacement can be recommended.

  • Upgrade Power Mac G5 Hard Drive: But New Drive Doesn't show up??

    Hello,
I have a Power Mac G5 1.8 (circa 2003).  I bought it in 2003 and it has travelled all over the world with me. I love it.  It has been the best and most reliable computer I ever owned; and I'm trying to keep it humming along as long as possible.
I am currently running Leopard (OS 10.5.8).
I have 2.5 GB of Ram (I upgraded 2 GB a few years back)
I have currently run out of room on my Hard Drive 160GB - the original one that came with the computer.
I purchased a Seagate Barracuda 2TB Hard Drive (Seagate ST2000DL003) to replace the 160GB one.
However, when I tried to replace the drive - it wouldn't show up on my computer.  I could see it appear on screen when I looked at Disk Utility but not in the window that allows you to select a drive? - and continue the installation process?  did I buy the wrong kind of drive?
I'm 100% sure I'm doing something wrong.  I just have no clue what it is?
Could someone please help; or point me in the right direction?
I'm not a computer whizz; nonetheless I'm not affraid to dabble in DIY.
    Many Thanks

  • Power Mac G5 Hard Drive Dead?

So the other day I tried to format my internal hard drive using my leopard server install disk that I bought for my power mac but I got the error Resource Busy. Then I used my Tiger install disk to format the drive and got the error Input/Output error. I ended up putting the hard drive into a PC I had and used it to format it to FAT. After that I put the hard drive back in my Power Mac G5 and it showed up as FAT and I formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I took a 250GB drive I found and also stuck it into the G5. Formatted it into Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and tried RAIDing them together using a Concatenated Disk Set so I could get the full usage of my 250GB and my 1TB drives. The raid failed with a error I can't remember. Now the 1 TB drive won't show up at all. The PC says it is a unknown device and needs drivers. What do I do. I have tried everything I know. Do I need to buy a new drive (why couldn't it be the 250 GB drive )

That drive series has had a bunch of issues.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...

  • Hard drive files gone - house burnt down, so now I'm having a kernal attack

I recently sent my 17" G4 in for repair through the Genius bar, my daughter took it in and they did not offer back up. Well the service center totally blew it away, it's just like your house burning down (such a desperate feeling - I think I cried for days) - but we won't go there and please do not lecture me about external drives, (I always backed up at the store), I bought one right away, sometimes it's quarky and now I really don't trust anything...
BUT - I think one of my biggest problems is when we tried to restore my hard drive - I seem to have 500 hundred copies of everything, it's like the hard drive icon and users goes on and on - I don't know what to throw out. I have tried a duplicates folder, a "?"'s folder, re naming the things, exporting my website, so things could be going everywhere, I have no idea how to clean this up. It is totally un believable.
What do you trust? If you throw out one folder ane you throwing out all of the same one?
Please oh Please someone help me. Oh it's also had 2 kernal Panic attacks. Our iBook is totally useless - unless in Safe Mode, because the same attacks are constant. I think it's an airport issue, but the Apple guy wouldn't accept that. So instead of having me do an archive reinstall, he had me do a clean reinstall, so that hard drive is gone now too, but hopefully safely on my external drive - if it's a software issue like he believes, doesn't it just make sense if you restore your files from your external, your just putting the problem back in?
    17" PB G4, 12" iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

so 17" came back from repair with 10.4 clean install?
how exactly are you restoring your files, from the external drive?
how was it backed up, as a "clone" or just individual files were manually copied over?

  • How to edit/deactivate when hard drive is gone

    Hi,
I am a paying subscriber to MobileMe. I used to have 10.4.11, and I used iWeb to create and manage a resume webpage to help find myself a job in the profession for which I was trained.
I have now gotten a job, and I ought to edit/delete the iWeb resume page, but since I've had the job, my Mac's hard drive has been replaced, and I can't access the site other than to view it. I want to edit or delete the site, but still remain with MobileMe.
If I cancel my MobileMe account and begin a new one, would that delete the site? Are there any other options?
    -James

If your resume is on MobileMe, then mount your iDisk (Command-Shift-I in the Finder) and go to the folder where the resume is.
If it's an iWeb site then go to iDisk > Web > Sites.
If you cancel MobileMe or let it expire everything will be deleted.

  • Moving Garageband Music Files to MyBook for Mac External Hard Drive on OSX 10.5.8  I'm a musician and need to make space on my mac hd. Is it safe to move music files there and delete them on the mac? Thanks!

use a MyBook for Mac external hard drive.
I need space on garageband or the entire hard drive, since I am getting the "need space on the hard drive" messages.
It's scary to move my precious music files!
How should I move them to the external and feel safe about doing so?
Or are there other methods besides the obvious, clearing caches, deleting the trash and downloads, etc., that are recommended?
I am doing music now and producers are waiting for the new vocals!
    Help!
    Thanks!

The process is as simple as just copying your Garageband project to the external drive and deleting from the macs hard drive. But before you delete anything you really need to back them up to someplace else also. Having just one copy is not safe. Get another external drive, DVDs or even flash drives, you absolutely need anything important in more then one place.

  • My Passport for Mac external Hard drive is not recognized

I recently had to purchase a new MacBook Pro, and when I tried to get files off of my Passport for Mac external hard drive.  I get an error stating "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."  And when I try to initalize, and verify disk, I get this message "Partition map check failed because no slices were found.".  I have already updated firmware for the external hard drive.  One site I found stated that it could be that the USB port is not strong enough, and I would need a 2.0 Booster cable.  Does anyone know if this would work?

What did you old Macbook die from?  Likely the HD in it is still ok,  yes?
You can remove the HD inside your old dead Mac and put it into a $20 HD enclosure or HD dock, and remove the photos that way, very easy.........IF your old Macbook died from something other than ALSO a bad HD.
You said----my OLD Macbook pro which recently lost video
What happened with your old "dead" macbook?  Still have it?

  • New to MAC, External Hard Drive Problem Transfering files to MAC

    Hello All.
First I'm new to the MAC world, just bought my powerbook pro yesterday. Love it. I tired looking for this topic and found similar post but no solutions that I understood.
    10.4.9
I have a 260GB NTFS external hard drive with about 100 gigs of info on it. I used it with my PC, running XP Pro.
I want to be able to access that HD from my MAC but all I can do is read, I cannot write. I was hoping it would just hook up to my MAC and I'd be able to read and write.
I do not need to be able to use this HD with my PC anymore. I'm 100% MAC now. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to make that happen. Do I have to reformat my HD? What system is that FAT32, NTFS? Something else? And how do I go about doing it?
    Thanks to all.
    D-Power

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You are correct, Macs can only write to FAT32, or Mac formatted hard drives with the built-in software, unless the Mac is networked to the PC, as this article describes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
You can also add Macfuse to the Mac, to connect to an NTFS drive, and that's linked here:
    http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
To reformat the drive, you'll have to erase it with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. Thus before you can reformat it, you'll have to copy over any essential information. The Partition section under Disk Uitlity lets you create a GUID Mac formatted partition under its Options button, and that is ideal for both Intel iMacs and MacBook Pros. If the label under the screen says Powerbook, let us know, and we'll direct you to that forum instead, if we can't answer your question here. Apple Partition Map on the other hand is the ideal for Powerbooks, and PowerPC based Macs. Formatting GUID or Apple Partition map, will let you boot from that drive, to verify that a clone backup was done properly depending on which Mac you made the clone for. Formatting FAT32 or NTFS won't let you make a full backup of your internal hard drive, and only will let you use it for backing up user documents. I highly recommend Shirt-pocket Superduper for backing up, as my FAQ* explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
P.S. The MacBook Pro is the Intel version of the Pro notebooks. You posted to the Intel iMac forum. The Intel iMac looks like: . So unless you have that Mac, you are in the wrong forum. There is no such Mac as the Powerbook Pro. You'll see the label in front says MacBook Pro below the screen if that's what you got. Here's the forum for it for category reference:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=190
And pick a forum within it to post a new topic, if I can't answer your question here.
In addition, this nomenclature article will be helpful as well:

  • Creating Partition in Mac Mini Hard Drive

i Have buy a mac mini a week ago, but before three days ago, some file got corrupted, and it does not start, only the password screen appears, when i entered the password, the screen appears again. and it continues. Now i want to partition the mac mini hard drive. i have only one drive, and i want to create another partition in the hard drive. when i create another partition  through the disk utility , i gives error, and cannot create the partition. i acutally want that first i make partition in the hard drive, and after using the "restore from time machine option" to install the mac osx lion in the system. Please help me in make the partition in the hard drive.

Apple themselves don't specify hard drive RPM because they buy a number of different drives, some apparently 4200 some apparently 5400.
It's no surprise that your retailer wants you to buy a G5 though, and is trying to upsell one based on the minis weaknesses - after all, they get more money from a G5 sale than from a mini. They may also be considering your planned use of Photoshop as a stumbling block to effective use of a mini, but the question really is what you intend to use Photoshop to do. If you're a hobbyist, the system is fine and will work more than adequately - particularly if you max out the RAM. If you're a professional user with pro-level expectations, then a mini likely wouldn't be sufficient, not so much due to the drive speed (powerbook users have run Photoshop verisons for years quite happily on what are predominently 4200rpm drives) but because for pro work, Photoshop needs a lot of hard drive space and a great deal of RAM.
On the basis of what you've posted, I'd say your retailer is more interested in their profit than your need. Chances are, if you run PS on the G4 listed in your profile, you're already running on a drive of similar general performance.

  • Can't transfer files from a mac external hard drive to a windows hard drive

Today I went to a friends house to try and take some of his music from his external hard drive. So we plugged his mac converted hard drive into my computer, which is operating on windows 7, and my computer could not read that anything was there. So we plugged in my windows converted into his Macbook Pro, and his computer was able to read it, but for some reason, we could not transfer files from his hard drive to mine.
I was just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or if it could be because I am using a hard drive that I bought in China, and any information would be great.

NTFS is readable in Mac OS, but can't be written to.
HFS+ is not readable in Windows, though Apple now has a (somewhat problematic and buggy at times) service to allow Windows on mac to read HFS+ to make it easier and more convenient.
There are drivers (free and commercial) to add the ability to read and write to each.
