Power mac G4 keeps freezing

My G4 keeps freezing up.
It sounds like it's spinning down. Sometimes preceding by a whiny clicking noise.
Occasionaly it comes back to life but usually have to force shut down.
Temperature is fine
I have run disc utility and Zapped PRAM
Have unpluuged and left for 2 days
All to no avail
Any ideas?
Can it be saved or is it time to bid a fond farewell to a trusty mac?

Hi! It's hard to say exactly. Usually a freeze is caused by ram but your symptoms sound more like a failing hard drive. A "whine" is usually a hard drive and noticeable clicks that haven't been there before is a good sign the hard drive is either severally corrupted or failing. What results did you get when you ran the disk utility? Tom

  • Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?

    Hi,
    Thanks for reading this.
Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
This JUST started happening only 4 days ago.
Most recent installation was Limewire, but I removed it to see if this problem would go away.
I have 3 internal drives (See drive types below) that all have OS 10 on them in order to be able to boot up from either drive in the event of trouble.
    However...
No matter WHICH drive I use as the start up drive... the computer STILL restarts itself after it is properly commanded to shut down.
Prior to the Limewire install... the ADOBE creative suite was installed.
There is a Lexmark X83 printer hooked to the computer, which, it seems doesn't matter if it is left on or off... the computer still restarts itself.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi, Tommy!
If you still have problems, trash the following three preference files, then shut down and do a PMU reset. (PMU reset procedure for the QS is the same as is shown at the link for the Gigabit Ethernet.)

Whew, that's too much info to digest, but possibly ApogeePopup is the problem, I lots of problems with that...

See if DU works this way... 10.7 or greater, reboot holding CMD+r keys & use Disk Utility from there for Repairing Drive.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode, like stalls, beachballs, etc...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Power Mac G4 (FW800) freezes often, with an occasional kernel panic

I recently purchased a Power Mac G4 (FW800) on eBay for $160, minus a hard drive and stock video card, along with a hard drive cage.
Since I opened the box it came in late Saturday night, the lovely machine has constantly stalled, crashed, and for a while, I received kernel panics left and right-in fact, I had one today, but it was the text version (unlike the visual kernel panic, which is the kernel panic seen in OS X 10.2+, and I have 10.4.11 running on this machine).
Often, if I multitask, import music on iTunes, or do intense activity, it freezes.
To solve the problem, I have done multiple memory tests, have performed disk checks (verified disk permissions and have verified the disk itself, and have done repairs on the disk), have swapped RAM for more stable ram (I was getting a RAM error for a while with some generic RAM).
I would hate to sell the machine for parts, but if worse comes to worse, that may be the route I may go under. Is there anything I could do to avoid having to go that route? From the inside, all of the motherboard capacitors look fine, but I haven't checked the graphics card yet, but I doubt that's the culprit. I want to see if I could push my luck with Apple sending the AHT for the Power Mac, since I can't find any on eBay, but I'm working with a vintage Mac here, and this is New York, so my luck may be out.
Interesting, I installed iStat, and it has been giving me misleading readings. It says my CPU is at over 1000ºC, when I know through Temperature Monitor that the CPU is around 100º-110ºF and rarely goes above 115ºF.
There are some things I haven't tried yet:
    1) Buying actual 2.5v RAM. That may hopefully be the key.
    2) Removing the USB card I put in, along with my Broadcom-equipped Belkin Wi-Fi card I put in.
    3) Calling Apple and begging them to send me a copy of the AHT for the Power Mac, and with that, hopefully, a copy of the system software.
Any suggestions? Comments? If need be, I'll post the system/crash logs for you hardware junkies.
    System stats:
    Power Mac G4 (FW800)
    1.0GHz PowerPC G4 on a 133MHz bus
1GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM (originally had some PC3200 in the machine).
    120GB Seagate HD
    Stock Phillips CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
Pioneer DVD-111D (the nice DVD burner I cannibalized off my beautiful homebuilt Wine-doze PC)
    Belkin 54g 802.11g Wi-Fi card
    Masscool XWT-MTU25 USB 2.0 card
So far, I have removed iStat, have gone ahead and pulled out the USB card. We'll keep fingers crossed.

Did both, and I still freeze up when importing iTunes songs. I'll include some kernel panic logs for reference, for you techies.

  • Power Mac G5 is freezing....HD not mounting......

Okay, so for the last few days my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 has been a bit sluggish to say the least. When switching quickly from iTunes to Safari it will pause for a second or two and then spin that lovely little beach ball for about 5 seconds.
Last night I was playing a game (World of Warcraft) and it locked up when I switched to iTunes. At first it was just WOW then after about 15 seconds the whole computer locked up. I shut down and restarted.
That went on all night. Every hour or so. This morning the same thing would happen. The program I am on will lock up, but the mouse will still work. I can switch to another program. Then the whole thing locks up and I have to shut down.
The real problem came when upon rebooting I came to the grey apple screen and it just sat there. And sat there. And then it went to a blank blue screen. After 5-10 minutes it booted only to freeze up once I tried to close iChat that starts upon rebooting.
I tried installing any patches thinking that might fix the problem. I got an error message saying "Cannot install "/" folder".
I got on these discussion boards and tried the verify/repair disk method. I got two different error messages and whether I was verifying or repairing it would fail.
The first message is "Error: File system verify or repair failed" and somewhere in the message is says "Invalid Node Structure"
The second error message said "underlying task reported failure upon exit"
I am not sure what I need to do. I really want to get this fixed so that I can at least get my files off the Seagate 1TB that is my boot drive. Thankfully I have the boot drive I had with 10.4.9 so I can still use the computer.
If it makes a difference, I have the same problem when running programs in 10.4.9 but not as bad. I just have to be careful not to be running two RAM intense apps at the same time.
Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I would love to keep this computer working for several more years.
Incidentally, what do you guys think I should do if it comes to this: buy a new iMac or buy a G5 Quad? Just in case I have to make that choice.

Are the malfunctions because of the problem that Seagate has with the HDs?
Yes, the malfunction with DiskWarrior is due to the bad firmware of the Seagate.
My sister just got a new mac book. Will that work for what I need to do to connect it to my computer?
I think, at a minimum, you will need to remove the hard drive from the G5, and put it into an external enclosure to do the flash. I don't know if it will work or not. #6 of the following "How to" is why I think it may not work with the Macbook and external housing.
Because of this, I recommend contacting Seagate, or finding someone with the right machine.
Here is a How to from a Mac Pro user:
    1. Get the firmware:
Seagate link for the 750/1TB 7200.11 drives:(if you look in Seagate forums you will find a few others for smaller drives).
    http://www2.uwants.com/viewthread.php?tid=7524956&extra=page%3D1
For the ES2 much trickier as they pulled it even though it was released, possibly unrelated to this issue in December. Who knows?
    I found it here though:
    http://www2.uwants.com/viewthread.php?tid=7524956&extra=page%3D1
    2. Download the zip to get to the ISO files.
    3. Use Disk Utility to burn the ISO to CD. Takes seconds, they are really tiny.
    4. Don't confuse which ISO is which. The names help but do one at a time. They both have "Moose" in the name, no idea who Moose is. The ISO for ES.2 is called ES2SN06B-3D4DMoose.ISO and for 7200.11 it is MooseDT-SD1A-3D4D-16-32MB.ISO
    5. Put the CD in the IDE (native) DVD drive BEFORE shutting down. Firewire won't work (as I discovered). Nor the eject button.
*6. Remove ALL SATA drives from the Mac Pro. If you have an external array disconnect it. Firewire, USB disconnect them ALL.*
    7. Use the sled from Drive 1 to put your pooched Seagate drive in Drive Slot 1. Not 2, 3, or 4, only 1.
    8. Start up and press option at the bong, there will be a CD Windows disk to select as the boot disk. Select it.
    9. FreeDOS starts up. Press F10 to get past the bumpf.
    10. The Seagate utility starts. First select "S" to scan. Make sure the drive is matched to the ISO you burned.
    11. There will be 2 or 3 firmwares listed. PICK THE RIGHT ONE and select A B C as the case may be.
    12. Let it work, maybe one minute. Note the actual working differs a bit for the 7200.11 vs. ES.2 but it is clear what is going on.
    13. When it says cycle the power, do that. Press the power button to power down.
    14. Reboot from the CD again. Get to the updater and press "S" again, confirm the firmware. For 7200.11 it goes from SD15 to SD1A. For the ES.2 it goes from in my case SN03 to SN06.
    15. Press Z to exit and power down.
    16. Repeat in my case 5 times. Remember if you are doing 7200.11 and ES.2 at some point you will have to put in a bootable OSX drive, reboot, just to open the DVD drive to switch CD's to the right image. A right pain in the tuckes.
    17. So far all work fine, System Profiler reports the new FW version, all the data (they were all blank but were formatted and named) is still there and the all copy files fine.
At some point the official SN06 firmware will appear, I assume. The problem with Seagate is the 7200.11 files are being hosted at the link but they want you to write for the ES.2 drives and then they do not respond, e-mail or trouble tickets. I had no problems, you may want to wait for them to post the SN06 firmware updater if they ever do.
Thanks to Ricktoronto for the How to.

  • My brand new mac pro keeps freezing

Hi, i have recently just bought a Mac Pro from the apple store, i have only had it about a week and half.
whenever i am using the computer, it keeps freezing on me everything stops working apart from the mouse, at first i thought it might because i have too many programmes open but it happens even when I'm doing a simple task, most of the time it takes 2-3 minutes till it kicks back in and starts working but sometimes i have to turn the mac off by the power button as it takes so long. would be great if someone could help me, as i said its brand new so something like this should not be happening.
    many thanks,
    luke

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Thanks BDAqua, it does sound like a bad capacitor. The PSU is one that I put in a few years back when Apple was giving them out so as to reduce the fan noise. I kept the old one until last week when I sent it off to be recycled. I suppose it would be a tough job to find the bad capacitor and I doubt that I would have the skill to replace it even if I could find it. It's not like I really need this power mac since I have a Mac Pro 1,1 but I do occasionally want to run something in OS 9 and I do love this machine for what ever reason. There was remarkably little dust inside but I went over it with a can of dust remover.

Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

  • Mac Pro keep freezing and powering off itself

I have a Mac Pro 2008. For weeks now, it will start, work for plus minus 4 minutes and freeze or go off itself.
There is no authorised maintenance in my country. Has someone experience the same before ? Have tried all reset, etc..
Does it has to do with the power supply ? It is connected via a UPS.
    PLEASE HELP.

Can you tell us how much RAM  (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title  bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.
If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.
If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:
We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

A few days ago my G5 started to freeze up while in use. It doesn't matter if in Safari, iTunes, Pages, etc. The cursor will not respond nor does any keystroke, force quit, escape, etc. I have to hold the power button down to shut the computer down. Then, try to restart. Sometimes restart will work and the computer will work for a while and then freeze again. Other times on restart, instead of the Apple logo at start up, I get a Zero with a line thru it, have to power off and restart again. When it does restart, the "spinning gear" takes a lot longer than normal to spin up and take me to the login screen. Have been told it may be my hard drive getting ready to fail. Have looked at disk utilities, S.M.A.R.T looks fine, "verified" and have verified disk, and repaired permissions. In case it is the hard drive, I bought external hard drive and hooked it up to Time Machine. The backing up to a long time, overnight, about 10 hours because it kept freexing up and I would have to shut down and try restarting again. Finally got everything backed up.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!!!   Could it be my hard drive is dying? Is the the normal chain of events or is it something else???

Ok, to copy the Drive from one to another, get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.
DW will not tell you about Bad Sectors, it's just the very best at Repair Directory damage & such.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Mac Pro keeps freezing & no longer Shuts Down properly

    Hya.
Im using a Mac Pro in work (Mac Os 10.5.8. with 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) . One day while doing a "Save as" in a program, the program froze/became unresponsive. In the Force Quit tab, it says "not responding", so i click force quit on it. It closes the window ive been working on and i get the message that the program has closed, BUT in the Force Quit tab, it still shows it listed and "not responding" next to it. It is also showing as running in the dock still. So obviously i cant restart this program, because its unresponsive. I have to shut down the computer, it shuts down everything else, but gets stuck trying to close down this frozen application, so it doesnt shut down the computer and i have to just switch the computer off.
I thought maybe it was just one program, but its litterally any program, could be safari if i say...click a box in facebook, or sendspace where it asks to search my computer for a file, if i ask it to do this, then the program freezes. It seems to mostly happen when i ask the computer to search for something i guess. "Save As" in most programs. Or if i click to import an image into a program, then bam, freeze.
Sometimes even "Finder" freezes and i have to just switch the computer off.
I generally get about 20-25mins without it happening, that is if im not heavily "saving as" or importing things, or asking the computer to do anything "tough".
Also, if one program freezes, and i ignore it and keep using another program, within a few minutes the next program im using freezes.
Some of the things ive tried are killing the running program in the Terminal application, and trying to quit the process in the Activity Monitor application. Neither work in closing the frozen program.
Ive used Disk Utility to see if there are any problems with the disk and there are none. We also bought DiskTools Pro and it also sees no problem with the hardware.
Originally i had something like 40gb on my desktop, i thought this might be slowing things down, but ive cleared it to nothing on the desktop and the problem continues.
I know I could reinstall the operating system, but i just dont like the idea of having to put everything back in its proper place again, and files "linking" up to their original place.
Not sure if this ties in with the problem, but we have an external hardrive plugged in which used to automatically sync up with time machine. This no longer works, and havnt been able to Back Up since the problem started.
Anyone have any idea what could be the problem before we have to send it off to get repaired?
    Thanks in advance!

    that is why my approach
    clone your system
be ready to restore if needed
    don't rely on Disk Utility
have an emergency boot drive / a working clone
    keep data on another drive
    spare extra drives
probably Disk Warrior has been rated #1 for over 10 yrs to rebuild directory
you should never need to reinstall, but you do need backups and how to use them

  • My Mac Mini Keeps Freezing!

    Hello,
Hoping someone can help me.  My MAC Mini (mid-2011) was working great for 7 months.  I decided I wanted to take advantage of Facetime so I purchased a Logitech C920 webcam. When I connected it to the USB port, my MAC screen froze and then turned white.  Upon rebooting the MAC, a camera driver update window appeared from Apple requesting I download two camera drivers (unfortunately I don't remember the name of the files). I downloaded and installed the files then the webcam seemed to work, no problem.  After a day or two my MAC started freezing, and the screen would turn white.  I have to turn off the MAC using the power button, and then turn it back on.  I have since disconnected the webcam but the issue still exists. I tried using time machine to restore an old image prior to updating the driver, but that did not help.  I ran a Sophos virus scan on all the files but the results were clean. I made sure all my MAC software is up to date and it was. Not sure what to do next. Maybe format the boot drive and then restore the old image?  Wait for Mountain Lion to come out and see if that takes care of it? If I format the boot drive won't the MAC become inoperable and I won't be able to restore the old image? (sorry, I'm an advanced PC user but this is my first MAC).  Thanks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
