Power Mac G4 loses internet connection after going to sleep

Run down of computer: I have a Power Mac G4 tower, PANTHER OSX. I have wireless internet through our cable company—I use a wireless router. When I am connected to the internet, and browsing the web or something, if I let the computer go to sleep, it loses connection. I have to go back up to the little signal icon and reconnect to my wireless network.
I suspected it might be a setting through the router, but when my computer was comletely unplugged, and absent from the apartment, the other computer (G5 imac–TIGER) which was having the same problem, suddenly was staying connected even after going to sleep. When my computer came back home and was hooked back up, suddenly the other computer had the same problem again. So, I concluded that my G4 tower was the culprit, and perhaps not the router. We share a wirless network, so it's not surprising that this is the case.
I know there must be a setting somewhere in preferences or something that is telling the computer to disconnect from network when computer sleeps. I have looked everywhere, and can not figure it out.
It's really annoying to have to reconnect each time I use my computer. And just to reiterate, I get internet through a cable modem using my airport card, so please answer the question with this in mind as settings are totally different from dial-up. I do not use PPP.
Anyone experience this problem? Or know how to help?

Tried that too! Notta.
This one's really a pickle! Even the Mac specialist at my office was baffled! He suggested shortening the name of my computer...(Jamie Cendroski's computer)...I didn't really understand how this had anything to do with it...but he's supposed to be the expert. He also suggested trashing my keychains and making new ones. I messed around with them, but I don't know enough about this stuff to be bold enough to trash them yet. I'll do a little more research before I do so. I think he might be onto something with the keychains though..?

  • MBA loses internet connection after waking from sleep

I have a new Macbook Air running Mavericks and new 802.11ac Airport Extreme router.
My problem is that the MBA drops the internet connection after waking from sleep. I tried the solution offered by the OP, but it didn't work.
In my case, here's what I have to do to get a connection again. I open the Network preference pane, and then choose "Assist me..." and then "Diagnostics". Invariably it will show a green light beside Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Settings and Network Settings. I have 5 bars showing in the WiFi menu bar icon. But ISP, Internet and Server will be yellow.
When I go through the steps prompted by the wizard, the ISP/Internet/Server lights turn green on the third screen where I select the wireless network I want to join.
It seems as if it's connecting to the WiFi network when it wakes from sleep, but losing the internet connection?
Note: I have a new iMac as well running Mavericks and don't have this problem with it.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Macbook pro with maverick 10.9.2 loses internet connection after waking from sleep

Recently installed maverick 10.9.2 on my macbook pro and have been experiencing lost internet connection (dsl connected via ethernet) after computer wakes from sleep.  Any ideas?

    Me too!
I am on a MAC Pro desktop and I am having the same issues. I go to system preferences and just click the network icon. Then I close mail and when it opens it now sees the network. This is getting very annnoying.

  • Mac won't re-start after going to sleep

Since installing a new version of FaxstfPro (version 10.7), my MAC won't re-start after going to sleep. I have to re-boot to get the system started again.
Thanks for any ideas on how to re-store the sleep fucntion.

Thanks for the excellent tip. From reading the bluetooth advisories, I realized that my D-link was incorrectly installed in a UBS hub. Moving it to a direct UBS port resolved the problem.
During the trouble shooting process, I found that I do not have a Bluetooth setup assistant. I have recently installed OS X 10.4.6 and also applied the Bluetooth firmware update, but I can not find the Bluetooth setup assistant in Utilites, and a search via Finder didn't locate it either. And I can't find the software in the .Mac downloads.
Any suggestions on how to restore the assistant?

  • IMac loses WiFi connection after waking from sleep on OSX 10.8.2

Bought a new mid-2011 21.5 inch IMac this week. It is not re-establishing WiFi connection after waking from sleep. Was happening on OSX 10.7 that it came with, so updated to 10.8.2 and same problem exists.
I am running a mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display alongside, on OSX 10.8.2 and no problems at all. Cannot work out what is causing the IMac to fail and neither can Apple!
Could it be the Netgear Wireless Router 3 years old? Full signal strength!

  • I lose internet connection after shutting down

I lose my internet connection whenever I shut down my desktop. I know it's not my modem or router because laptops, iphones and ipods all have a great signal and connection. This only started happening after I downloaded the latest software update 2 weeks ago. I have a Motorola modem and Apple extreme router.

last two days exactly the same - it states that my network is not available and yet shows it, I then have to re enter the password, also date had reverted back to Jan 1st, however, there was one bonus, scrole on the mouse now works correctly again!

  • All browsers lose internet connection after awhile

After upgrading Safari and Java yesterday, all of my internet browsers are losing connection after awhile (10 - 15 minutes), until I disable and enable Airport. However, when the browsers are dosconnected, the airport connection is still ok, because Mail stays connected. The disconnection in the browsers happens randomly.
So if 1 browser suddenly disconnects, all the other browsers cannot connect either. Mail stays connected. Browsers only connect after I disable and enable Airport
    I tried the following stuff:
    repair disk permission
    maintenance
    cleared java's cache
    rebooted osx a few times
    reseted router

  • WRT350N, Loses Internet Connection after several days of working.

My WRT350N worked fine for 4 days after instalation then stoped communicating with my Linksys modem.  I returned my first WRT350N to Best Buy after a day of troubleshooting, and several calls to Comcast, my cable  provider.. Assuming I had a bad router I got a replacement, and after 3 days the replacement router did the same thing, losing its internet connection.  I found it pecular that I could connect to the router. it looked like it was connected to the modem, but would not make an internet connection, even after restarting my Linksys BEFCMU10 Cable Modem and router several times.   I could only make a connection if I pluged my computer directly into the modem.  I also check for firmware updates and at the time there were no firmware updates.I returned my second WRT350N to Best Buy requesting a refund and re-installed my original WRT54GS.  Does the latest version of firmware resolve this specific problem?  Judging by the inquires on this forum, it would appear that alot of users are experenceing this same problem.  I really like the Idea of the Storage Link, but I think I will wait till they work out there problems with the WRT350N, before I buy another Linksys product.

I suffer from the exact same problem you describe ever since I bought my WRT350N 3 weeks ago. I do not have a solution for you unfortunately. Maybe if everyone with a WRT350N with this problem chimes in here, Linksys will take note.

  • Server loses internet connection after creating virtual switch in hyper-v

On a fresh Server 2012R2 Essentials install, I set up Hyper-v and created an external virtual switch. Connection to the vm is good but Health Report no shows loss of internet connectivity and that the router is incorrectly setup.
However, I still have a working internet connection? I worry that the server may not update or allow Anywhere Access at some time. Any suggestions? Thanks

If Hyper-V virtual switch behaves strange and server is destined for testing, then it's correct and I recomend delete this virtual switch and create it again.

  • Lose broadband connection after waking from sleep

I use Power Mac G5 OSX10.3.9 to connect to the internet, via Sky Broadband (in the UK) and Netgear DG834GT modem with ethernet cable (not wireless). I can connect with no problem and everything is fine, as long as I keep my G5 on or shut it down completely and turn it back on again later. However, if I put it to sleep for more than half an hour, then, when I wake it up, I lose broadband connection. The connection is still alive for a few seconds after I wake up, and other computers connected to the same modem can connect AS LONG AS THE G5 IS STILL ASLEEP. But it appears that the act of G5 trying to connect back to the internet kills the connection. Rebooting G5 doesn't help. The only thing I can do to reconnect once I lose it is to reboot the modem (by turning it off and turning it back on).
I cannot determine whether this is a problem with the modem or with the G5. Any idea? Thanks.

I quite serendipitously discovered what was causing the problem and how to stop it, although it's not a solution per se. I am explaining what I discovered in detail below in the hope that it might help future users who might encounter the same problem.
When you log on to http://192.168.0.1, you are connected to the Netgear DG834GT router itself (after typing in the username and password). On the "router status" page, there is a button called "show statistics." If you click on this, you open a window with a running display of statistics on the phone line, like upstream and downstream noise margins and line attenuation. The line is scanned every 10 seconds to give updated information in real time.
I always had this page open on my desktop, because I was having problems with line noise and wanted to know the current status of the line and its noise margin at all times. When the noise margin was low, my connection speed was incredibly slow.
I discovered that it was the "show statistics" page open that cause the loss of connection when I wake up the computer. If I don't have the "show statistics" page open, I don't lose the connection when I put G5 to sleep and then wake it up.
I tried it with different browsers and discovered that Safari and Netscape do not have the same problem. I do not lose connection even if I have the "show statistics" page open in Safari or Netscape. It only happens with Firefox (which I usually use) and Mozilla. If I have the "show statistics" page open either in Firefox or Mozilla, then I ALWAYS lose the internet connection when I wake up the computer.
This is not a true solution in the sense that I don't know why this happens or how not to lose connection when the "show statistics" page is open. But at least now I know not to have the window open.

  • Internet gives after going to sleep

My Powerbook has been acting strange. Lately, whenever the computer goes to sleep for a long period of time, for example, when I let it go to sleep at night, and when I wake up to use the computer, the internet isn't working.
It only seems to happen after the computer is asleep for a while. All I have to do is restart the computer and the internet is working fine. The internet is working for everyone else (I am at school) and nothing is changing.. the probably only occurs after the laptop has been asleep for a while. Safari says my computer is not connected to the internet at all, but like I said, as soon as I restart, the internet works.
    Any suggestions?
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I've had this same problem, though with mine, whenever there's a hiccup with the internet signal, currently through a wireless cable modem, the PB loses its external IP, thus it can no longer access the web. With the cable modem, the external IP is static, thus is always the same. Still, I have to restart the PB to regain connectivity. The PCs on this same network do not have this problem!!
Isn't there some way of reinitializing the network without doing a full restart?
    Thanks.

  • 13"w/ext display loses WiFi connection after waking from sleep

I have my 13" macbook pro (mid-2009) connected to an external monitor. When the system goes to sleep and wakes up, the wifi is disconnected and an error window pops up saying something to the effect of another computer is using the IP address assigned to my computer.
If I reset the modem it usually works, otherwise I must wait about 15 minutes for system to connect again.
It does not happen if there is no monitor connected to the notebook.
Is there something I can do to stop this from happening?

I have a strong suspicion that I am getting wifi interference from my neighbors. Several new wifi signals have appeared in the last month coinciding with new neighbors moving in and some old ones getting wifi. Upstairs, I can pull up 6 or 7 networks, some broadcasting on the same channel. Downstairs, where my MacPro resides, I do not see those networks. My problem seems to manifest itself on my MacBook Pro when I move upstairs and can pick up the extra networks.
When I power cycled my router this morning, I noticed it changed channels from 11 to 6, indicating that the Auto setting is determining a better channel. Also, this problem seems worse after 5 pm. So, I'm chalking this one up to neighbor interference. If my iPhones could use the 5 GHz band, I'd use that exclusively... or maybe it's time for a simultaneous dual band router.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I've advised a customer that interference was the cause of his wireless connectivity issue.

Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated!

Hello again. I uninstalled Covenant Eyes thinking that would solve the problem, and was having varying luck with getting the computer to wake up from sleeping, but now it is crashing again when trying to wake from sleep. The wake it has the most trouble with is when it goes to sleep due to being idle, and less so from putting it to sleep or closing the lid. The following is the report I got:

  • Macbook Air loses internet connection after I close the cover

This happens all the time. Whenever I walk away from the computer, I'll close the cover for security. When I return, I'll be prompted for my password.
After I sign back in, on the top, I'll still have my five bars for network connectivity. But if I try to refresh or open a webpage, it will time out.
If I switch from one wifi network to another, it works. I have a dual-band router with a 2.4g and 5g network running. This problem occurs if I'm connected to either, and switching to the other network makes the internet work. Also, in the case of Facebook, after it times out I can then put in Facebook.com and then it goes back to pulling up normally.

If it disconnects, you can use the icon in the menubar to reconnect rather than restart.
If the icon isn't in the menubar then go to System Preferences > Network > Select WiFi on the left > check "Show WiFi status in the menubar"
