Power Mac G4 no iMovie and no restore disk

I purchased a used Power Mac G4.  It is running OS 10.4
The problem is that it does not have iMovie installed.  Online help states that I need the restore disk, which I don't have.  Is there a way to get it, or is there another alternative?
The other problem is that updating the software requires a password from the former owner.  The machine boots to desktop without a password, it's just needed for updating Safari.  Is there a way to reset that?
The machine is in other wise fine shape and I'd like to make it useful.
Thanks,
Jay

If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
If you are in another country:

Have you asked the vendor for the password?
iMovie is part of iLife. You should be able to purchase the relavent version on eBay or Amazon.

  • Power mac G5 dual, startup and fan problem

    Dear macpeople,
I have a Power mac G5 dual, 1.8 ghz, ramm 4.5GB. I guess from 2004. Only added more Ram three years ago. Never had any serious problem till a week ago. I have read a lot of similar questions and responses on my problem in this forum but till so far i have not been able to solve it.
Since a couple of weeks my mac sometimes did,nt recover from sleep. Starting up gave me some trouble because the fans were racing like **** and i had to restart several times to be able to boot normally. In the beginning just the upper fan next to de CD player ran fast and loud but now all of them get crazy at start up. Very rare times G5 is able to recover this (fans slowing down) and boot up, but this only in the safe mode.
    I have cleaned the mac
    i have resetted PRAM
i have used utility disk, all ok
i have unplugged for 40 min, reset in the machine, safe start up.
    Checked memory
The only way to boot is in the safe mode. The fans start blowing fast but after 4 min. they slow down then the blue screen appears and mac builds up normally. But when i leave it for more than 1 hour in the sleep mode it will not recover, although i hear the normal sound of awaking/ accelerating disc. The screen keeps black and after a few minutes fans start blowing at full speed. Pushing 4 sec. the on/off button pulls it off.
I hope that someone can help me to solve this problem (me not being a tecnician at all) or that someone can give me a kind of diagnostic so that i can check  the costs of profesional reparation. And start saving money for a new machine.
Any one any clue? Help would be very apreciated

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

  • Power Mac G5 Blank screen and no chime on start up

I have a Power Mac G5 (June 2004). Recently when turning on the plug switch (at the wall) there was a power surge to the Mac which blew the internal power supply. I bought a reconditioned PSU and replaced the blown one (following online instructions). When I turned it on again, it booted up, but without the start up chime and a blank monitor screen. The monitor power light is on, but nothing appears on screen (black). Eventually the fans go crazy and only stop if I turn the Mac off. I can't boot up in safe mode as there is no chime and have tried command shift P R to no avail. After much searching I'm lost as to what to do next.
    Anybody have any ideas?

  • Power Mac G5 Quad: crashed and now seizing up and other major problems

My Power Mac (G5 Quad) crashed twice today (screen froze and stopped responding to mouse and keyboard), both when rendering in an application called Artlantis, although that could be a coincidence. Another possible culprit is that I used Migration Assistant to move a user account, applications and root level files from an Intel machine, onto this machine recently.
After the second crash startup was slow and problematic. Mouse wouldn't respond although I was able to type in username and password to login. I was able to manipulate things with keyboard but not mouse. Everything seemed to seize up and then it would follow some of the commands I'd made via the keyboard and then seize up again. I do remember one other instance of having a similar crash and symptoms about a week ago, before I migrated the Intel-based account, so maybe that's not the problem.
I managed, with some difficulty, to start up with the Install disk (10.4.2) and do a disk verification, which brought up two instances of "Illegal name" (just after the word Catalog). I then did a disk repair which it said was successful. Restarted machine but same problems.
I've tried to backup some data that's not currently backed up, by booting into target mode but the machine tends to seize up after a while. All types of booting seems to be getting gradually more difficult. Leaving the machine off for while helps with booting.
Booted into super user and did fsck, which it said was okay. Booted into Hardware Test and did an extended test which said it passed. The Hardware Test and the super user mode seemed to be the only modes that could run without the machine seizing up.
To get the data that's not backed up off the machine I wondered about taking the hard drive out and putting it into another of our Quad G5s... good idea or bad?
As for finding out what's wrong, any advice?

Just some more observations. Hoping for new external hard drive to turn up today. In the time being I've been using the machine out of urgency.
The crashes seem to happen after an hour or two of using the machine. Most of the time there is no need for a hard shut down. The interface seizes up but after a minute or so I'm able to use the keyboard, including navigating between applications (command-tab) and shutdown (ctrl-eject -> tab to shutdown). Also, network or application processing activity continues, though what appears to be in a stuttering start-go manner. Activity on the keyboard seems to help this activity along, or at least helps you see any progress. If there's no activity on the keyboard the graphic interface catches up every moment or so on its own (just less often than if you're taping on the keyboard).

  • IMovie and burning to disk

iDvd is no longer available.  What program to I use to burn an iMovie to disk?  Do I have to purchase another program???

    Hi
Do I have to purchase another program???
    YES - or -
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Plays fine in IMOVIE and IDVD but disk doesn't play right in home DVD Playe

I created a movie in IMovie and it plays fine there. I converted it to IDVD and it plays fine there, but when I burn the actual DVD, it takes 12 hours! and then it won't play on my home DVD player. (It starts out fine, shows the menu and has the movie, but halfway through it freezes. Or if I try to fast forward to skip to the next chapter it freezes.
I tried upgrading my Superdrive to the new Pioneer 111D (it was suggested to me that my older 103 was not compatible with Panther) and still the same problem.
I am noticing now that when I go to check my system profiler, it's now saying for the new Pioneer 111D that "disc burning is NOT supported".
I'm in the midst of a project and feeling pretty screwed. HELP!

First of all, I'm appreciating all the responses and help. This is a serious concern for me which I need to find a solution for asap.
As far as the media itself... the discs are TDK DVD- and I've ruined about 4 or 5 of them... each having the same problem...taking 12 hours to burn they play for awhile on a commercial DVD player then freezes up about 2/3rds the way through (unless you try to scan through, in which case it freezes up on the spot.) There are a total of 3 scenes... and the 3rd scene doesn't happen at all in the final burned disc. So, J.Keller, as much as I'd love to blame the media I don't think I can. But it's certainly a reasonable explanation.
Karsten, I have to tell you the thought that it might actually take LONGER to butn this disc is painful. It's actually only 45 minutes or so of material. But if I knew that it would take 24 hours but it would work perfectly I'd go for it! I will download the patch you recommend to see if it offers a workaround solution.
But I'm still perplexed that in the SYSTEM PROFILER for the Pioneer 111D it says that "burning is NOT supported". Should I be concerned about this?
At this point I'll try just about anything. So if J Keller thinks that by waving a dead chicken over my head while singing dixie would help create a workable DVD so I can finish this project for my boss, I'd give it a try.
Any other thoughts? I really appreciating the insights and suggestions.

  • Mobileme @me account changed to @mac after IOS4 update and backup restore

    Updated iphone 3GS to IOS4
noticed today, since i never use it, the mobileme account on
my iphone has the following settings
    Nmae Luis
    address [email protected] (greyed out)
    SMTP smtp.mac.com (greyed out)
    password .........
I can edit the name field and password field, but not
the Address or Password. I have never had an @mac email,
I can access my email at mobileme.com with correct [email protected] email.
Only thing I have done is update to IOS4 on wednesday and restore from backup, which I did just before the update. The newest email in the account is dated Monday.
P.S. i signed up for the mobileme calendar beta on Tuesday

Support had no idea, they just had me delete and recreate the account. So, everything back to normal, just no clue how my account went from @me to @mac.

Can anyone help me please? My ipod has a white screen that i cant get rid off. I have tried pressing home and power button at same time. I have tried a restore from itunes and its still the same. I cant even turn it off. Please someone help me.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • I am running OSX 10.5.8 on a Power Mac 5 (non Intel) and get a message that "FF4 is incompatible on this platform."

I have a G5 (late) running OS 10.5.8. I downloaded FF4 and tried to install in my Apps. folder. The FF app. icon shows a white do not enter type sign on it. and a message that says, FF4 is not compatible with this platform.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • No Audio Tone when booting power Mac G4 (Sawtooth 400) and cannot get sompu

I have a used PM G4 400 "Sawtooth" that works fine w/OS X 10.4.11, but the audio tone at the startup does not sound, although other volume works. And I cannot seem to put the computer to sleep, even though the System Prefs show them set. Any thoughts?

    Hi-
Try resetting the PRAM. Hold CommandOption+PR then start the machine. Hold the 4 keys until the second startup tone, then release. This should restore the boot chime.
Sleep problems can be caused by connected devices, especially USB. Disconnect all but the monitor, keyboard and mouse. If sleep still doesn't work, reset the PMU. If sleep works, add one device, and test. Continue until you find the problem device.
There are other possible sleep inferences, so, check this article for more information.

  • AJA lola and new Power Mac crash at log and capture

I've been using a power book with an AJA lola to capture and print to a betacam sp UVW1800 for a couple of year now and so far so good, but yesterday went and bought a Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon and installed the new AJA drivers and now when I want to capture and digitize it would crash every time, I have my set ups at 10 bit uncompress (same at before) but it won't work, and with the old drives it can't detect the deck, I have tested every connection and cables and all is fine, seems like a matter of compatibility? maybe? Any one has had a experience like this?

This kind of behavior can be the result of bad housekeeping (at least in my experience.)
Start by repairing your permissions, then retry. Trashing your prefs is next, then run Disk Warrior. If none of that works, you may have a hardware problem with the deck.
It's not much, but I hope it helps...

  • Power Mac G4 MDD MOBO and Processor Compatibility

I have two G4 MDD Motherboards. One MOBO is a 820-1474A (FW800) and the other is a 820-1476A (with just 2 FW 400 ports). I was told the 1476A is a 167Mhz buss and the 1474A is a 133Mhz buss board. I've tried installing a Dual Processor module PN 820-1472A onto the 1476A board but it doesn't work. It powers on, all the fans turn on, the processor gets warm and I see a RED light come on near the RAM slots but I don't hear that normal Apple 'GONG' sound during turn on. I know Apple built numerous CPU's (single and dual)for the MDD and some of these CPU's are not cross compatible. I'm really confused now with all these PN's and what CPU's can work on what MOBO. Where can I go to find out what PN's are compatible?? I tried two other single processor CPU's 1.25Mhz with the 1474A MOBO and I get the same results as I do with the 1474A MOBO. So now I have all these parts and no confidence on what is good and what is bad??
More Background -- I've got 2 brand new 512MB PC 2700 chips purchased from '4 All Memory' specifically for a G4 MDD, an Radeon ATI video card that works fine in one of my other G4's and my boot drive is an IDE 320G with OS 10.4.11 installed and the power supply is a API1PC36 (360W).
