Power Mac G4 random restarts
I have an old QuickSilver G4 Power Mac which is mostly a music player now, but it randomly restarts for no apparent reason.
The weirdest thing is I've unplugged everything to see if there's a conflict with a device, and it won't even reboot unless the display is plugged in...
Has anyone had this sort of problem before?
Hi jpageboy, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, in System Preferences?Energy Saver, is it set to Start up after Power Failure?
Have you reset the PMU?

Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
Hi,
Thanks for reading this.
Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
This JUST started happening only 4 days ago.
Most recent installation was Limewire, but I removed it to see if this problem would go away.
I have 3 internal drives (See drive types below) that all have OS 10 on them in order to be able to boot up from either drive in the event of trouble.
However...
No matter WHICH drive I use as the start up drive... the computer STILL restarts itself after it is properly commanded to shut down.
Prior to the Limewire install... the ADOBE creative suite was installed.
There is a Lexmark X83 printer hooked to the computer, which, it seems doesn't matter if it is left on or off... the computer still restarts itself.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

If you still have problems, trash the following three preference files, then shut down and do a PMU reset. (PMU reset procedure for the QS is the same as is shown at the link for the Gigabit Ethernet.)

Newbie Tracing a Mac's Random Restart
We have Leopard Server running on a PowerMac G4 MMDD 1.25x1, 1.5 GB RAM.
Recently, over the past several weeks it has been randomly restarting itself in the middle of the workday (not good), and at night. What's the best way to trace what is causing this to restart? Where should I look in Console logs and what am I looking for?
Thanks for the help,
J.E. FlynnThe first place to start is /var/log/system.log
This log file contains all critical system errors and warning messages. The thing to look for would me messages that were logged immediately prior to the restart, as well as the restart messages themselves - mixed in the middle there may be some reference to 'Unexpected shutdown' which might give a clue. -
Need help asap - mac book random restart message

hey crew, i got this macbook a few months ago and more and more often since then, i get this message "you need to restart your computer.. hold down power button etc.."
I would take it to Apple repair for service as it is under warranty.
from what i can find, it is a kernel or something? would this be software or the actual computer itsself?
If you can' get to Apple, read on.....
You are probably experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc. HT1392. If not, disregard.
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.
Good Luck! DALE -
Hi,
Lately my Mac Pro has been restarting randomly, saying it has done so because of an error. I have counted 5 times so far today. I am looking for a common task that it may be tied to but so far I am speculating at best. Two times I was reading a news article in firefox.
Here are the specs:

Any ideas?interestingly enough, the latest crash was while watching a TED video in firefox. Could be display related, although for some reason every crash seems to happen while actively using firefox. I will try to narrow it down by running without virtual box for now and if I still get a crash I will try running without firefox.

Power mac G4 hangs at startup with gray screen
Hello all,
I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model. 512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook pro
I can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Reset PRAM
Started computer in single-user mode
used fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
Started computer in verbose mode
startup seems to hang when this appears:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: (ipc/send) invalid destination"
"LayState: cannot map display interlocks."
"/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection"
"Cannot connect to server"
"/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection"
"Connection called with invalid connection"
Tried re-installing with system discs
The only discs I received with the power mac G4 when I purchased are orange and say "SSW version 8.6" on it" ("iMac Software Restore" and "iMac Software Install")
Computer does not respond when holding down "C" key at startup with either disc in the drive
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as ONLY the internal HD - not either of the CDs I mentioned above; I wonder if it no longer recognizes the original CDs because I updated to 10.2.8 from 10.2.1 before the issue?
I also have an install disc for OS X 10.4.7 - for a friend's iMac (G5)
When holding down "C" key at startup with the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive AND the internal HD
When I choose the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When I choose the internal HD the startup hangs at the gray screen I mentioned above
At this point, I don't know what else to do. I believe the computer is still good because I can see everything on it when I put it into target disk mode; it just refuses to make it through the startup/login process. I have read discussion threads that suggest re-installing the OS using another computer - but I don't know how to do that. I also wondered if there was a way to tell the computer to re-install the software using the original CDs - but from the command line (in single-user mode)?
Someone - PLEASE HELP!Sorry, SU Single User Mode, OF Open Firmware as these 2 where mentioned before.
As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.
It could be the User's files or login messed up, if you want to try something a little more desperate...
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...
http://theappleblog.com/2008/06/22/reset-os-x-password-without-an-os-x-cd/
It'll boot like a newly setup Mac, but all your stuff should still be there once filling out the stuff.
Except you could just use Target mode and move or rename that file. -

I upgraded to latest version of mountain lion yesterday, this morning my power Mac was running extremely slowly (while typing, had to wait a second or two for words to appear), I shut down to see if problem would clear up. When starting up, screen went black with programming jargon, something about debugging with the word panic in parentheses. Screen then goes back to gray, says Mac encountered a problem and has to restart once I push a key. Apple logo comes on gray screen, icon keeps circling and nothing happens. This has happened three times in a row after shutting down and trying to restart. Any thoughts?
When verifying disk, said could not repair disk, back up as many files as possible then re format disk. Computer now doing Internet recovery. Should I. Do the following in this order
1 restore from back up on time machine
2 re install osx
These are the options coming up on osx utilities window -
Power Mac G4 MDD Random Power Shut Down
I am located in Thailand and have a Power Mac G4 purchased in November 2003. Last month the computer shut-down at random times and during various types of operations. CPU and hard drive temperatures were well within range, the installed battery tested at 3.5 volts. A new UPS was purchased with surge protection, no software was provided or appeared necessary. Often times the computer would re-start if I let it set for 30 minutes or more. Sometimes if the power plug was removed and re-inserted or the UPS re-set, the computer would start.
Associated hardware consists of Canon Printer, Mac keyboard, Kensington turbo ball, stand alone backup hard disk, flash card reader, ViewSonic moniter (8 to 10 years old), flash card reader, USB hub and audio system. Am connected to the internet via a router with one other computers on the line.
The problem has occurred with and without the attached hardware except for the monitor, keyboard and turbo ball which had to be attached to operate. The keyboard, turbo ball and computer where serviced by local Apple service center. The keyboard and turbo ball checked out OK. After sever attempts since the shutdowns were random and could not be forced, the service center after much testing and waiting decided the logic board need replacement which was done (400+ USD). A new power supply was ordered but they stated it did not need replacement.
Since the new logic board was installed and run for three days with no problem, the computer was returned with 90 day warranty. The problem almost immediately returned but has run OK for long periods of time before a random shut-down occurs. The shop was contacted and we are continuing to observe the problem but I hate to give up the use of my only computer for another month, like the last repair.
The following chart is a play by play account since the repairs.
The shop and I are completely stumped and any comments would be appreciated
*Power Mac G4 MDD Random Shut-down Problem*

UPS alarm came on. Re-set UPS and computer came on with high-speed
sound of (fan or hard-drive) which ran for several minutes (estimate at
least 5). Computer then worked OK for many hours.
May 22, 2008 6:30 AM After using all night, computer shut-down while using Safari.
May 22, 2008 1:00 PM Pressed Mac start button and computer operating OK.Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
Replace the power cord. If this doesn't alleviate the condition, (from your description) I would consider the PSU to be the most likely suspect. -
Mac Pro 3,1 Randomly restarting
Hi all,
My Mac Pro is getting a lot of kernal panic's which I assume is causing the random restarts - on boot I get "your computer restarted because of a problem'...
I'm not much of a tech person so I was hoping someone could look at the crash log and tell me what the issue is?
I've repaired Disk Permissions and all looks to be ok...

com.apple.kec.pthread 1The Mac Pro has Error-Correcting Code memory, so you do not have a memory problem, else you would get a very distinctive kernel panic, machine check. uncorrectable error or error overflow.
Mac OS X kernel does not usually panic in this fashion. But you are not running Mac OS X kernel, as you have added all these modifications to it:

One or more of them appears to be making your Mac unstable.
You should uninstall them all, and see if the panics stop. Then reinstall only the ones you really want, one at atime. -
My Power MAC G5 has a peculiar problem. The monitor fails to report until the machine is started and shut down 5 or 6 times. Once it has booted it can be restarted without incident from the Apple menu. I have swapped out all of the hardware. Monitor, Memmory,Video Card and reset the PRAM. After resetting the PRAM it booted on the first attempt and I thought it was solved. But the next day it was back to starting and stopping until the Monitor came on. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks
It could be a bad PRAM battery corrupting your PRAM. Typically when I have monitor issues on startup it is a bad PRAM battery.

If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. A new battery provides 3.67 Volts DC. A bad battery provides under 3.2 Volts DC. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
>I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
>
>Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
>
>Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.
Alternatively, test the battery while it is still in the computer.
If the battery is more than 5 years old, especially if you totally disconnect the computer from the power regularly, or have left it unplugged for several months at one time, it is likely the battery is dead.
Sometimes you have to do a more intensive reset of hardware management:

I received an old Power Mac G4 Quick Silver and was cleaning the desk top. When I restarted all I got was a circle with a slash and the small spinning wheel under it...nothing else
I suppose 3.6V PRAM battery is run out , so you'd better replace it.
Or resetting PRAM could solve the problem.

I have a mac book pro running Lion 10.7.4 and every time I use Google Earth The computer crashes by lowering a black curtain and then asking me to hold the power button down until it closes and press the power button again to restart it. Can I fix this? It bugs me when I'm looking at real estate.
I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen. -
I have an older Power Mac G5 running 10.4 11. Key chain seems to have locked itself ? When I go to open Keychain it is locked and won't open on restart or when I use my administrator password. I thought the keychain password was the administrator's password and that it would open on restart. If this isn't correct, how can I open Keychain ?
