Power Mac G4 (Tower)

Hey,
I recently accumulated a free Power Mac G4 but there was a catch i had to fix it :L...
I dont think theres a hardware problem i think its a software problem.
Im pretty sure theres no operating system installed or its corrupted.
On Start Up i got the finder icon in a little folder.
I tried booting from disc while holding C on start up didnt work...
I also tried the Start Up Manager thingy holding option on startup but it makes me put in a password of which i dont know?
I currently have a working MacBook Pro if thats help? I was thinking of maybe erasing the harddrive inside the G4?
I dont know... any ideas tips? PLZ okay thanks

what cd were you trying to boot? if it's the cd that came with your MBP then it won't work. because it's a non-intel mac, you can only install leopard (10.5) or older. i wouldn't go older than tiger. if you want to play around with it and don't want to buy an older mac osx disc, i'd look into install linux on the G4. just google it and you will see plenty of linux distros that can be installed on powermacs. this should also help determine whether or not the cdrom is functional.

A Question regarding hard drive when selling Power Mac G5 tower

Hello,
I have a 2004 Power Mac G5 tower that I'm trying to sell and will be taking out the hard drive before I ship as I don't want to reformat the drive(I'd rather keep the physical drive with me). Are there any other precautionary steps that I need to take in order to prevent the buyer from retaining any of my data on the computer? Do components like the motherboard, video card, ram or the processor retain any of my data?
Or will taking out the hard drive the only thing I need to do?
I've never sold a used computer to anyone before so I guess I'm a little OCD about it.

Actually the very last time I used the computer was the time it died on me so it wasn't powered off properly and I have not been able to use it since. Does the data in RAM clear itself regardless of how it was turned off? From what you have told me I'm guessing that whenever there is no power in the system the RAM is cleared regardless, am I correct?

Transferring photos from power mac G4 tower to new iMac G5

What's the best way to do this? Old photos are stored in my user library in a whole bunch of numbered folders. When I tried the FILE > ADD TO LIBRARY and selected a folder, I get an error "the following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognizable file type or the files may not contain valid data)". I can import each individual image if I click on them one-by-one. But that can't possibly be the best way to do this. Suggestions?

Copy iPhoto Library folder from one Mac to another
-If the library is small enough, burn the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to CD/DVD.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder from the CD/DVD to your Pictures folder of the iMac.
-If the computers are networked, copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder of the other Mac.
-If you have an iPod, copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to the iPod. Connect the iPod to the other computer and copy the iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder of the other Mac.
-If you have a firewire cable, copy the ENTIRE iPhoto LIbrary folder to the Pictures folder of the other Mac
Things to keep in mind:
-If the usersnames are different you might have to set the permissions on the iPhoto Library folder to Read/Write for the new user. Check the "apply to enclosed items" at the bottom of the "get info" window.
-If there is another iPhoto Library folder on the other Mac, change it's name so it doesn't get replaced by the iPhoto Library folder you are copying into the Pictures folder...or....drag it to another place on your hard drive.

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

Power Mac G5 Tower starts up, but no display...

I've got a PowerMac G5 tower that powers up, I hear the fans ramping up, but no display > black screen. I've tried 2 different monitors...same thing.
What could this be? PRAM?

graphic card is one possibilty.
As to the swap, which exact G5?
Some use AGP cards like G4s, some need PCIe cards, also which g4 card, some or most won't work in a G5 even if yours is AGP.
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

Power Mac G5 tower: 5.1 audio system

I've just purchased a Creative Inspire T6160 audio system and in my naiveté didn't think to check how it might connect to my, 2004 model, G5 tower. The spec. of which is two Optical Digital ports, one In and one Out and two Audio line ports, one In and one Out. Now, of course, my 2.1 stereo system plugged into the Audio line-out port but the new 5.1 sound system has three jacks, lime-green, black and orange. The user instructions show they plug into a 5.1 sound card, either internal (PCI card) or external.
I tried fitting a new PCI wireless recently which failed to work - don't know whether it was me or the part - so I feel the better route would be the external USB 5.1 card but don't really know whether that is the best option. I'm trying to avoid compromising the sound, but, equally can't run to expensive solutions.
I've also seen other options – which I don't understand using a Minijack to TOSLink cable or adapter?
All suggestions welcome, though, but please be patient with me as you are dealing with a technical moron!

John, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help, here. My technical knowledge, limited as it is anyway, has run out. However, a few thoughts:
I'm wondering what makes you think that the Zalman product you've got will work with this CM6206 enabler? Is it that you've got a CD driver with a CM6206 for the Windows version? I say this, because the only Zalman product Dr Lex actually mentions is the ZM-RS6F (USB) in their headphones range.
And – forgive me here, because I'm sure you've done it – but you've checked that all other USB devices work okay with the same USB socket? It hasn't failed or anything?
Also, you haven't Software Updated any new OS X versions, such as security updates, updates to Java or Quicktime Player. I performed one very recently and on reboot lost my USB sound card (back again now). Oddly enough, it didn't even seem like it had installed anything because when I select Software Update three items appear awaiting installation?
Finally, as you suggest, it could simply be that it works better with the PPC chip than the Intel one. You could buy the actual one that Dr Lex shows in his photograph from Amazon (like me) or eBay (like him). It's about £15 (20–25 bucks).

ESATA Card for 1.8GHz Single CPU (Late 2004) Power Mac G5 Tower

I have an unusual issue. I purchased the LaCie d2 quadra 500GB external hard drive. What attracted me to this drive is the ability to interface it by USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 or eSATA. Of course, eSATA looks like it would provide the best throughput. So, I asked the rep at MacMall to suggest a compatible eSATA card for my machine. He suggested LaCie part number 710372 which is a PCI card with two eSATA ports on it.
When it arrived, I checked the specs on the package and found that it requires a "PCI slot (32 bits 66Mhz; PCI 2.3 compliant interface)". When I checked Apple's web site it looks like my machine has the following caution "Warning: Do not use PCI cards that function only at 66 MHz in the 33 Mhz PCI slots. Damage to your equipment could result...". So, I called LaCie support to check this before I installed the card. LaCie support checked with their technicians and I was finally told that this card did have the ability to operate at 33 Mhz but it wasn't listed on the package.
So, I installed the card and then brought my machine up. It seemed to run normally. So, I attached the eSATA cable to the hard drive and then to one of the ports on the card. So far, so good. Then, I powered the drive up and it appeared on the desktop. I then fired up Disk Utility and erased the drive. That worked fine. Next, I tried to copy files to it and that worked.
As a matter of course, I always like to erase a new drive with the "write zeros to all sectors". This verifies that every sector on the drive can be written to without any problems. I don't know if this really accomplishes anything. But, it would seem to validate that the drive works fine.
So, I started this process knowing that it would take a long time for a drive this large (500 GB). This seemed to proceed normally as I checked it from time to time. But, after a number of hours (with only 13 minutes remaining), the entire system hung. I could not do anything except press the button on the front of the machine.
After the machine came back up, it seemed to run normally. But, as I started running applications, I could tell all was not well. The system hung from time to time. Each time, it took 10 or 15 minutes to become responsive.
Finally, I got disgusted and powered everything down and removed the suspect PCI card. Since I did that, the machine works fine.
The drive is now connected using the Firewire 800 cable and seems to work fine. But, it doesn't seem especially fast. I have other drives attached using Firewire 400. Is it possible to have drives attached to both Firewire busses and still get the performance advertised by Firewire 800?
Also, is there an eSATA card that will work in my machine and still provide the advertised eSATA performance (1.5Gbits per second/150MB/second)?
With the drive connected to the Firewire 800 port, it honestly doesn't seem any faster than any of the other Firewire 400 drives.

I didn't say what to do, only options and tried to point out WHY.
This is what I know, these are possible explanations. And alternatives.
most PCI cards are NOT a fixed 66MHz, very very small market. And most PCI slots are not 66MHz only. The Blue G3 and Xserve have used 66MHz PCI.
Your card should work. eSATA is slightly better than FW800. But you are going through a 'bridge' between the drive and the PCI card, usually Oxford 924 chipset.
A direct SATA case for $68 would let you use two drives and get the 75MB/sec writing speed, which is about as much as you can expect from most SATA drives and in G5 anyway.

Connect it to one of the eSATA ports on your LaCie SATA PCI card.
And yes, you have the single drive now.
When installing cards and drives, reset-nvram - either zap the pram from cold startup or boot into Open Firmware and type the reset-nvram and reset-all from there.
I know lots of people use and are happy with LaCie and D2. I am not one of them (I use to buy LaCie when it was Quantum back in early 90s).

Power Mac G4 loses internet connection after going to sleep

Run down of computer: I have a Power Mac G4 tower, PANTHER OSX. I have wireless internet through our cable company—I use a wireless router. When I am connected to the internet, and browsing the web or something, if I let the computer go to sleep, it loses connection. I have to go back up to the little signal icon and reconnect to my wireless network.
I suspected it might be a setting through the router, but when my computer was comletely unplugged, and absent from the apartment, the other computer (G5 imac–TIGER) which was having the same problem, suddenly was staying connected even after going to sleep. When my computer came back home and was hooked back up, suddenly the other computer had the same problem again. So, I concluded that my G4 tower was the culprit, and perhaps not the router. We share a wirless network, so it's not surprising that this is the case.
I know there must be a setting somewhere in preferences or something that is telling the computer to disconnect from network when computer sleeps. I have looked everywhere, and can not figure it out.
It's really annoying to have to reconnect each time I use my computer. And just to reiterate, I get internet through a cable modem using my airport card, so please answer the question with this in mind as settings are totally different from dial-up. I do not use PPP.
Anyone experience this problem? Or know how to help?

This one's really a pickle! Even the Mac specialist at my office was baffled! He suggested shortening the name of my computer...(Jamie Cendroski's computer)...I didn't really understand how this had anything to do with it...but he's supposed to be the expert. He also suggested trashing my keychains and making new ones. I messed around with them, but I don't know enough about this stuff to be bold enough to trash them yet. I'll do a little more research before I do so. I think he might be onto something with the keychains though..?

Power Mac G4 questions.

So like so many other users, my Power Mac G4 tower will not power on.
All that happens when I press the power button is the indicator light will flash in the blink of an eye.
When I hold the power butoon, same thing, but there is a faint clicking sound comeing from inside the case.
I'm pretty sure it might be the power supply that is out, so how would I know what specific item I will need to buy to replace the bad one?
Also, would it be recommended to get a new battery for it too since it is well over 5 years old?
If none of you can answer my questions, will Geek Squad (no Apple store for quite a ways) be able o point me in the right direction?
How much will they charge me just to look at it, without any repairs?

Something to try in the meantime. Resetting the Logic Board
Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
before replacing any modules.
1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
Note:
This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to
check the computer’s time/date and other system parameter settings

What are the normal operating temps for a G5 Quad Core Power Mac Tower?

I asked this within another thread but I am afraid it will get buried and think it deserves its own item.
I just downloaded Temperature Monitor and have been looking at the data. I have no idea how to interpret the figures and there are no listings of specified upper and lower limits even though there is an area where those numbers should go.
The numbers are constantly in flux, going up and down a degree or two but here is a recent example from a screenshot taken while I was running WORD (but not working on any document), Terminal, Apple Mail, Firefox (two windows open), Temperature Monitor, Preview, Dashboard and Finder:

The icon for the program, in the dock, gives me an ever changing number that is perhaps an overall reading - an average. Right now the number is 106.4 degrees F (taken some minutes after the screenshot providing the above data). Always in flux.
Do any of these temps look alarming? And HOW and WHERE do I find out what the temperatures SHOULD be?
PS I have APPLE RAM.

If you want to find out whether a sensor value is within normal limits, please select the menu item Window > Show Overview (or press Apple+1) and look for the limits in the third and fourth column of the sensor table. They contain the known official limits Apple has specified for readings acquired at the given sensor locations. If no limit is given in the table, this either means that it does not make sense to specify a limit for this particular sensor (e.g. the battery capacity should not have limits), or Apple hasn't published any specifications for this sensor.
Note that all up-to-date Macintosh models automatically shut down or enter sleep mode if one of the readings exceeds a critical limit. For this reason it is impossible that your computer can be damaged in an overtemperature condition.

What model of mac pro are you using (e.g., 2010 Mac Pro is 5,1).
And also,
Try smc and pram reset.
And see if the monitor lites up if you boot in safe mode.
It is possible your monitor simply failed -- its power supply or something else.
