Power Mac G4 upgrade..what should i get

I have the pci graphics 400mhz model (1999). My budget is £100 and i would like to add more ram (it has 256 just now), pci cards, new hard drive, smart card reader and possibly a new graphics card and, anything else i can sqeese into the budget. Any info on where i could find some bargins (i live in the UK), or any ideas of thigns i could add onto my G4?
any replies are greatly appreciated.

Hello DreamBlogger,
I have a G4 400 mhz. PCI the same as you. I got some memory from ebay.co.uk. Put this number 180111643083 in the ebay search. He still has some left at a very good price. I bought 2 and they are both installed and working fine. Max RAM is 4 x 256 meg one in each of the 4 slots.
I also bought a USB 2 PCI card at a car boot sale on Sunday which has the NEC chip set. I am going to install it on Thursday. I will post back with good or bad news on Friday.
Hope this helps,
Alan

  • Corsair: 3 DDRPro types, What should I get?

My 2x256K RAM is about 20MB-200MB short when running certain games. So Im going to get 2x512s. Corsair pros seem to be a good choice as they have very low latency.  From what I hear, low latency is how AMD users make up for not having the bandwith Intel chips have. (I know I have a 333 FSB, next year Im going to a 3200+ CPU):
However, this is confusing me. Corsair 3200PRO-series sticks seem to have three types. XL,LL, and C2.  I orignally wanted the XL bc it had the lowest latency(2-2-2-5) vs. LL (2-3-2-6), C2(2.5-3-3-6). Why all the choices?
Here what I can tell: The XL only comes in twins. The LL and C2 come seperately. The C2 can appearantly work on "intel platforms". Then it get real confusing, because if you look at the individual spec pages, only the LL mentions it can be used on "nForce 2 Ultra". Cant they all given that they all list at DDR400?
    http://www.corsairmicro.com/
What should I get?  I read that DDR only makes a 3-5% difference. So I would forgo the twins, BUT they only sell the XL (2-2-2-5) latency in a twin pack. So there may be more of a gain here in the XL series.
Will I notice the difference in latency of seperately buying 2 LL(2-3-2-6) sticks over the XL(2-2-2-5) twins, or is this just a paper gain that no one really notices?
If Im doing overkill and can accomplish a gig DDR 400 at a lesser cost, please let me know. The "bling" lights on the Pro sticks is not that much of a purchase factor. I just want speed.
Sorry for the long first post. I couldnt find anything upon several searches.
FWIW: Thanks to Wonkaboy, Raven, the guy with the robot in his sig, and everyone else who contributes. I now have  the fastest and most stable computer I have ever used or owned. I had no problems bc of the compilations in the stickys. Very good work on those.

Wonkaboy conviced me that with the costs of prosticks (and a AMD3200+) I would be halfway to another system:
I went to get the same model # as min current twins (2700LL 2-2-2-5), but corsair doent make 512K 2700LL . So I had to settle for 512K 2700C2(2-3-3-6).
If I read the above link right Im only looking at a 1-2% difference anyway
The auto detect was configured 3-3-3-7   . So I went in and changed it to 2-3-3-6.  I cant get it near 2-2-2-5(but I didnt toy with voltage or any other FSB parameters).  I may try 2-3-2-6 but Im giving up after that. I tried other-lower settings but it didnt work. Again, Im to scared to start toying with the voltage, I dont know enough and dont want to fry the system.
Any comments are appreciated as far as setting the ram speed. Id like to get 2-2-2-5, but it looks like I may settle for 2-3-3-6.
My computer runs much better now that it has enough ram to not bother with page file swaping.
    Thanks Wonkaboy and Raven!

I've got it working on mine by downloading the old facebook app version 4.0.1 from the following link. In iTunes, go to file menu, select add file to library and add the downloaded ipa file and facebook will appear in the apps screen. next sync will then put facebook on your iphone 3G.

  • I do not own an adobe product and want a one-time payment licence for students and teachers, what should I get?

I do not own an adobe product and want a one-time payment licence for students and teachers, what should I get? There are so many licenses to choose from and at least 3 lightroom licenses for students.

If all you are looking for is Lightroom, I would suggest going to your campus computer store. The computer store where I worked had Lightroom in stock. If your store doesn't have it in stock they can order it for you. There is really only one Lightroom 5 license that comes with the standalone version, student or otherwise. The program is identical either way. Licensing for the creative cloud is handled through the web and the payment method, But you aren't concerned about that.

  • What should I get? Mac Pro? Mac Book Pro? iMAc 24"?

Hello, I had a Power Mac G5 and the mother board with the two CPU's broke down, so now I have to get a new system or repair it by myself. The money that the inssurace company gives to me is enough for a new "Mac one quad" and even an upgrade to logic 8 and an mLan card for my 01v96. I also have a MOTU 828 mkII.
I also have a Mac book pro for my Job (I sell storage solutions like NetApp and EMC on a company in spain)
The questiion is that I never used the G5 at a 100% and the only card I had was a RME DIGI 96/8 PAD.
I use my studio for composing (personal and sometimes for theatre)
I think that with a Mac Pro I can always grow on configurations and I have enough CPU resources for the future.
About using a Mac book Pro seems to me that it is a temporary solution??
With an iMac I found that it gets very hot after a while. Does it affect to the performance?
Rerpair the G5= 700$ but I think it is a short time solution??
Please let me know your opinions.
    Thanks

  • Here's what I need... so what should I get?

OK all you experienced mini users, I waited until the intel release, and I'm ready to get my mini... only problem is, now that I've looked at all the options, I don't know which one to buy. So I'm opening it up to you all, hoping that you can advise me a little.
Here's what I want to do with my mini:
    1. I don't play games, and I'm not looking to play them in the future.
    2. I use mail, safari/firefox, office, iLife, endnote, photoshop (rarely, and nothing too serious), etc.
    3. I've got most of my media (mp3s and video) on a large usb2 external drive. So internal HD doesn't have to be huge.
    4. I want to minimize the clutter on my desk, so airport is a must.
    5. I like the idea of the BT keyboard, but the reviews worry me a bit, and I think I'll end up with a mighty mouse.
    6. I'll use the mini for the next two or three years, and then it will become a mp3 server on my home network or perhaps a dedicated web server for my small personal website.
    7. I want a superdrive for backup and home movies.
    8. I might take advantage of an audio input to burn my LP collection, but this is a very minor concern.
With that in mind, what do you think I should be looking for?
    -Dual core?
    -Single core upgraded with SD?
    -1.42/1.5 PPC?
Right now, I'm sort of leaning towards the single core... for the price, even with the SD upgrade, I'm not convinced that I'd be significantly happier with the Core Duo.
I currently use a pre-MDD G&W G4 Power Mac (~466, 512MB RAM) and a 15" G4 PB. The desktop is about shot, but I'll continue to use the PB on campus for the next year, until I upgrade to a macbook.
I just want a small, reliable desktop mac that I can use in my home office for writing my thesis, reports, etc. and keeping my iLife media together.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
    15" PB G4 550mhz, 512mb   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I would concur. But, I'd even push for the Core Solo, if price is a real issue for you.
On the keyboard/mouse question, I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard and really like it. (It doesn't have the top plastic cover like other Apple keyboards, so you can really vacuum it out well.) If an ethernet cable is more clutter than you want, the extra cables for the keyboard and mouse will be significant. FWIW, I bought the BlueTake BT500 Bluetooth mouse. It's really tiny, and uses up batteries like they're going out of style (but I use rechargables), but otherwise, it's very nice and since it's so small it reduces wrist fatigue.

  • HELP! I need some help from true Mac fans! What should I buy???

So, I'm moving to Japan, which has a couple of implications (other than the fact that my wife's parents and my parents are looking for any legal recourse to stop us from taking their only grandchild out of the country). More importantly however, I have had to sell my B&O TV and music system (different signals from the UK where we now live). I also decided to sell our stereo (or rather my wife decided it was too bulky so as long as it was not in the living room or bedroom I could keep it...). Finally, I need a new laptop for personal use. I have some friends that are absolute mac fans, who have convinced me to go over to the other side (i.e. yours).
The opportunity I now have is to create a complete system as I need a laptop, something to play my music, a TV, etc. Given I am starting from a clean sheet I was hoping somebody out there could help me 'design' a complete set-up. My wife and I are keen photographers (both photography and video), we like listening to music, and watching movies (we definitely need a region-free DVD player), so what should we buy?
Any input would be hugely appreciated.

OSX also supports IME right out of the box.
    日本語 ー わかりません
It sets up pretty well, too; I like it more than Mircrosoft's implementation (language bar).
Only thing to keep in mind is where you buy the MacBook; if you get it in Japan you'll get a Japanese keyboard, which displays most of the kana alongside the keys. You also get the conversion and switch keys on the keyboard itself, which is great.
The MacBook Power Unit is multi-voltage, so no matter where you pick it up the worst you need is a plug adapter; although getting one from apple would be best. Just don't think you need to buy a new power unit, only the plug and cable.

  • Power Mac G5 Upgrades? New to Mac

Hello Everyone, this is my first post here on apple.
I Recently got a M9020LL/A Power Mac G5 1.6ghz tower, 1 gig memory, 80 gig drive. Fresh install of Leopard 10.5. All is working well... Happy with it.
My question is, other than ram/memory obviously, are there any other upgrades i can perform?
There is no possibility to upgrade this computer to a Intel chip, is there? be kind here lol... I have a PowerPC now.
On the website below, it says there is a Dual 2 gig option for this "series" of towers, is that a possible upgrade, and if so, where do i get it or find a part number.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP96
    Thanks everyone

Bigger hard drive for sure. Maybe multiple drives.
Can't put Intel chip in PPC, sorry.
    Video card?
Always a matter of what's worth the investment. I regard the transition to Intel somewhat of a wall. In that regard even a G5 is old and cannot get beyond that point. We're up against it already with the recent release of Snow Leopard for Intel only. You can upgrade the G5 until you're blue in the face but come next OS release you'll be left with a non-upgradable computer and one left running an unsupported OS. I guess what I'm saying is, consider first before doing major upgrades.
Oh, if you get a SATA hard drive you can probably use it in your next computer even if it is Intel, so that's not a waste of money.

  • Power Mac RAM Upgrade - Why not faster?

I just upgraded my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 from 1GB to 3GB with Crucial memory. The computer booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. The system recognizes the full 3GB. Problem is, I cannot tell the difference in speed, either by "seat of the pants" or by benchmark tests. XBench tested almost exactly the same either way (in fact, it was 1/2 point slower with the 3GB). I also compressed a 2-minute movie from iMovieHD into a Quicktime file. It took the same amount of time with either configuration.
Any thoughts? Is there a different comparison test I should try?
    Thanks.

    Hi
If you have sufficient memory for what you're doing, additional RAM will make little or no difference. You could try using Activity Monitor located in the Applications->Utilities folder to see how much memory is actually being used at any one time. The following document contains more info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
Artificial benchmarks probably won't detect any differences, as the memory footprint of the tests is probably minimal. Likewise movie compression is probably limited by the speed of the processors and/or hard drive more than it is by the amount of memory available.
You should be able to detect a difference when running several memory hungry applications at the same time and switching between them though. The boot up time may be slightly slower with more RAM as a POST (power on self test) is performed.

  • I have inherited 2 Power Macs sans Airport- what do I need please?

Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster, long time reader. Thanks for all the help everyone has given me through other's threads!
Problem: I have inherited 2 Power Macs and one Mac Pro, none of which have wifi capability.
In order to rectify this, can someone please tell me which Airport (Expresses?) I need to purchase for each one? Feel free to be specific- I can use G or N but prefer N. I plan to buy on a popular bidding site or equivalent.
All are different, here are the specs:
1: MacPro 1,1 (G5 2.66GHz, Quad Core Intel...) (No OS yet, would Lion be pushing it?)
    2: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.3GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
    3: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.0GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
Please don't ask what I will do with them, I do not intend to share my plans for world domination on an open forum.

OK, thanks for that, but I should have been clearer:
I would rather have the internal apple solution- many are available on auction sites (£5-£10), I just need to know which one is appropriate for my use. Can anyone supply me with a model / part number for the original Airports used in a PowerMac G5? Specs follow:
    2: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.3GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
(The Intel G5 airport search is over. I have found an airport extreme card on an auction site and bought it for £5.)
