Power Mac G5 and Applications

I'm currently in the market to buy a new Power Mac G5 Intel based. My question is, will my current programs run on the new mac?
I currently use most often: Adobe Creative Suite CS, Studio 8, FlightCheck Professional, QuarkXpress.
Are there any problems I may run into from switching over?
Is there any classic environment at all? I know when I purchased my G4 it didn't come installed on it, but you could install it from the disk.
Your help is much appreciated.

Intel would be Mac Pro, not G5 similar looking case, forum is over here).
CS3 is Universal Binary. CS2 works also but under Rosetta as do any PPC programs. And there is no official Classic environment.
Just don't migrate older PPC programs, plan on doing fresh installs.

  • I have a power mac G5 and want to play sims 3 on it.

I have a power mac G5 and want to play sims 3 on it. When I click on the disk from the desktop it says "you can not open the application the sims 3 installer, because its not supported on this architecture." How can I fix and or resolve this issue? Thanks in advance! Connor

Sorry, but The Sims 3 require an Intel CPU Mac running OS X Leopard  10.5.7 or greater.
Your G5 is IBM PowerPC Mac and therefore will not run on that hardware architecture.
No workarounds. You need a newer Intel Mac to play this version of The Sims.

  • How i can protect my mac os and applications?

    Hello,
    Please answer me.
How i can protect my mac os and applications from "migraton assistant" copy?
    Thanks a lot

Although I have never used Migration Assistant I think it only works by Logging into the other computer, whether Mac or PC, with some type of code or knowing a valid username and the password for that username.
In that case Password Protect all your user accounts on all computers and when walking away from a computer set it into sleep mode with the option to require a password when waking.
If you are working in an environment where thieves thrive then always lock your system with a Password.

  • Please Help - Power Mac G4 Startup/Application Issues

My Dad was using Adobe Illustrator CS2 on his Power Mac G4. He is running 10.3.9. He went to change a font in the font menu, everything froze, and the beach ball started spinning. He force quit Illustrator, reopened it, and the same thing happened. He tried restarting the computer, and it wouldn't power up. There was no chime, just a fan noise. Finally, it turned on, but no applications work correctly. As soon as we open any program, it freezes and the beach ball starts spinning. Does anyone know what we can do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is his business computer and he needs it for his work.

  • Power Mac G4 and MacBook Connection to Airport Express

My problem is how to connect different Computers (Power Mac G4, Power Book G4 and Mac Book) to just one printer, which has no ethernet connectivity. So I thought it could be possible with airport express. And it is with PowerBook and MacBook, but what about the PowerMac G4? Is an Airport card compatible with Airport Express?
Does anyone out there know details?
    iMac 2,16 GHz, 2GB, 500GB; PowerBook G4 12''; PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi
The airport card in the G4PM is compatible with the airport express. I.e. if you set up a USB printer on the express all the computers you list will all be able to work with it. Of course the data rate will be slower with the older card for the PM, (11 Mbps) but I can't see this being a problem.
Have a look at as this user has compiled a helpful list of compatible printers or more importantly incompatable ones.

  • Power Mac G5 and a Laserwriter Pro 630 - Is it Possible?

Another question as I look to upgrade my father's computing setup.
He probably wants to keep his older LaserWriter Pro 630. I'm going to load OS X Panther and Classic 9.2.2 onto the Power Mac G5. Is it possible to get the LaserWriter to print on a straight ethernet connection? Or do I need to devise another method to make it work. Also what's the scoop on drivers, AppleTalk, etc? Thanks very much.

112491- LaserWriter Pro 630: Technical Specifications
The laserWriter Pro 630 is a Postscript level 2 printer with an Ethernet port. It does NOT support LPR/LPD, so it must be addressed using AppleTalk-over-Ethernet. No adapter is required unless you intend to use a pre-Ethernet Mac. The printer is supported with the drivers built in to Macs running 8, 9, and all versions of X using a universal LaserWriter Driver and a descriptor file for that specific printer.
On the Mac, you must turn on AppleTalk on the Ethernet interface you are using. Some third-party Wireless Base Stations refuse to pass AppleTalk packets, so if you need a new Wireless Base Station, use Apple or stick to the major brands.

  • Power MAC G4 and the AccuVision Monitor

My brother recently died, and I inherited his Power Mac G4 -- I do not know the OS -- with an AccuVision 920 Monitor and other peripherals. My brother was a musical genius, and I know that on his Power Mac G4 is important legancy information about him and particularly his work.
I can't find information about how to power up the desktop as a whole, and I can't figure out how to properly set the power source for the monitor: to the CPU itself or to my wall outlet. Your careful consideration and advise to this matter is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Dunloe-
The cable that you referenced is a power cable, not unlike that which connects the computer to the wall recep or power strip.
You stated that you want to connect the monitor to the computer. Apple monitors use a cable similar to that which you referenced, to connect to the power on the back of the computer tower. I tried to search the monitor as described, but found nothing for AccuVision, except for contact lenses.
The monitor should have 2 cords- 1 for power, and 1 to connect to the graphics port on the back of the computer. Most non-Apple monitors plug directly to electrical outlets, rather than electrical outlet on the back of the computer tower.
It would be helpful to know the maker of the monitor, and the model of the computer. The computer should have a label on the back with a model name/number.
As far as connecting the computer, the computer can be powered up by plugging in the power cord, and pressing the power button. To interface with the computer, you need the monitor, the keyboard, and the mouse connected appropriately.
As far as electrical issues, just use common care when connecting cords, and use a surge protected power strip to connect to household power.

  • Network G4 Power Mac PCI  and CRT imac

    Hi every one,
I have just got my 2 computers networked with a Netgear RP614 wired router and the internet connection is working on both.
How can I get them both to communicate with each other as I need to transfer some items from imac to G4 Power Mac.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

    Hi Alan,
By "communicate" do you mean logging into one machine remotely from the other?
You can transfer file several different ways between your G4s. If the amount of data is large (10s of Gb), I'd recommend using firewire. For file transfer via firewire, you'll need a firewire cable to connect the firewire ports on the two machines together. Then, reboot the machine you want to transfer files from , holding down the "T" key. That machine will show up on the desktop of the second machine as a firewire device. Once you're done transferring files, simply drag the firewire device icon to the trash and shutdown the first machine.
If the amount of files to be transferred is small, you can use AFP (Apple File Protocol). To set AFP up, in System Preferences, under Sharing, on each machine, check the box next to "Personal File Sharing" and "Remote Apple Events". If you've not already done this, I'd turn on the Apple-supplied firewall rules, via System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall. Then reboot each machine in turn.
If one the Macs you're using is only running OS9.x, you'll also want to check the box "Allow events from Mac OS9" and click on "Set Password" to set a password. This password will be needed by "Chooser" on the OS9 machine to gain access to the OSX machine.
Then to connect from the OSX machine to the OS9 machine (for example), press Command-K (Connect-to-Server) to bring up a list of machines. Hopefully, the machine to want to connect to is listed. Select the desired machine, and click "Connect" and provide a user name and password, when prompted. Then select the "share", ie. user account on the remote hard drive to mount locally. A globe icon with the label of the "share" you mounted will appear on the local desktop. Then, away you go! To disconnect, just drag the globe icon to the trash.

  • I've upgraded to OS X10.8.2 but I can't open power pc files and applications

I've upgraded to OS X10.8.2 but I can't open power pc files and applications

Note that there's no such thing as "PowerPC files." PowerPC applications won't work on OS X 10.7 or higher, but the files created by those apps can still be opened if there is an updated version of that app. For example, if you have MS Office 2004, you cannot open any of those Office apps, and thus cannot open any of your Office documents. However, if you upgrade to Office 2011, or some other substitute (such as Apple's iWork suite or the free OpenOffice or LibreOffice), you will be able to open those documents again just fine.

  • Should I get a new Mac Pro or a used Power Mac G5, and why?

I'm trying to decide which of these would be a better choice and better cost/benefit/value ratio.
I spend my time in Photoshop CS and Adobe Lightroom most of the time. I have NO intention of running Windows, so I wouldn't miss that by going with the G5.
    What are your thoughts?
    Here's a G5 that looks pretty tempting.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Dual-1-8-Ghz-4GB-1000GB-DVD-R-Maxed_W0QQi temZ190131690775QQihZ009QQcategoryZ51036QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is a lot of "maybe's" and big "if's" - there will ALWAYS be change and updates, and no one knows what or when. Just 'speculation'. Or, needed? not if someone things they would be happy with 4 yr old G5, they aren't worried about the next upgrade and leading edge.
I don't know that the Mac Pro is a year old. Then again, it hasn't changed. One new model configuration added.
As for "$1000 upgrades" that is a PLUS, not a MINUS as you can't even find video or stuff more memory, and limited on disk drives with the G5.
The G5 would turn in a score of less than half of 2GHz MP, more like 1/4 especially with stock 2.66. $1895 for Apple ref's @ www.apple.com for MP, too.
Do your shopping on Apple Store Specials, not ebay. A lot of G5s are showing their age and in need of some heavy cost fixes, PSU, failing video, logicboard ... and you may be out on a limb.

  • I HAVE A POWER MAC G5 AND IT WONT POWER UP.

I have a Power Mac G5 (late 2005).  It will not power up.I Have already replaced the PRAM battery and tried hitting the SMU button.  Nothing.

Pull the plug from the wall receptacle (the wall receptacle works, right?).
Press the power button (This is to drain builtup charge).
Replug the power cord to the wall receptacle.
    Do you hear any clicks?
Press the power button. Still dead?
If you hear two clicks after reconnecting power, the PSU is likely dead.
Using a volt ohm meter (multimeter) you can test the PSU:

    Hi!
Does the drive appear in the System Profiler? If not, you might try removing the drive from the enclosure and check if the Mac "sees" the device when mounted internally.
You might boot to your OS 9 install disk and try using Drive Setup to erase/initialize/zero the drive, too.
I suspect that DiskWarrior might not be able to see the drive either. You may be able to connect it to a PC, which won't recognize the Mac format and may give you the opportunity to initialize the drive. If this is the case, initialize it in PC format, then connect it to the G4, which should enable you to re-initialize it using Mac OS Extended. If this is successful, then use the Erase option to write zeros to the drive and you should have a clean drive again.
