Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 - Move Hard Drive to another G5??

Hi,
I'm using a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 w/ OS 10.5.8 with my Pro Tools 7.4.2 HD3 rig, 2 internal hard drives and tons of external FW hard drives. It's being hinky with me (every time I reboot/restart the Mac, I have to take the side cover off or it won't boot; wierdest problem ever), and being that I don't want to plunk down thousands of dollars on a new Mac and all new Pro Tools equipment, I'm hunting E-Bay for an exact duplicate of my Mac, of which there are plenty. Since PowerPC architecture is long dead, they are dirt cheap. No reason not to have a spare.
My questions are:
If I buy another Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 machine, and swap the hard drive it comes with, and use my already functional hard drive (with the OS, Pro Tools and all related plug-ins installed), and move over my Pro Tools cards and 8 GB of RAM to the new(er) machine, will it boot up and work without me having to reformat/reinstall everything?
I also see numerous Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 machines out there as well. What are the chances of doing the same as question 1 with this? I know the processor is different, but would my already formatted and functional hard drive care? I don't think this will work, but I have to ask.
If Question 2 is even possible, would upgrading to a Dual 2.7 even be worth it as far as noticeable speed improvement? Superior Drummer, EZ Drummer and EZ Keys are all real time plug-ins that need the Mac's processor/memory to work. They don't use the Pro Tools cards to work. So, would getting that extra 200 Mhz of processor power even matter?
The reason I ask is that reinstalling the OS and Pro Tools is not the issue; 4 hours and it's done. BUT, reinstalling Superior Drummer, EZ Drummer,and EZ Keys, along with the mountain of expansion packs, will literally take several days of work. If I could just plop my old hard drives and 8GB of RAM into a newly purchased G5 Dual 2.5 or 2.7, and not go through that, it would be AWESOME.

Just got done making the transfer to the "new" Dual 2.7 G5 I bought off E-Bay. (yes, on Christmas Eve, because....well.... I have no life). Worked dead, solid perfect!!! I'm grinning from ear to ear right now.
I had to reset some pref's in Pro Tools (not an issue), Just got done running Pro Tools through its paces, and it works perfectly. All plug ins run (had to re-authorize Superior Drummer and some related plugins because it detected the change in system serial #, again not an issue). Other than that, it worked like it always has. I loaded every third party plug-in I could find, and every third party program I could find, and so far everything works without any issues. Only exception is Team Viewer locks up when I try to close it (have to Force Quit), but I couldn't care less right now. I use that twice a year if that, and just to have someone help me remotely.

I just actually did that the other day. My newer MacBook died on me. So I took that drive out and installed in my older 2009 Macbook Pro and it works.
I however, can't tell you if moving your older Macbook Pro hard drive to your newer Macbook Pro might work. If the OS is the same version, it might. But if the OS in your older Macbook is not the same version, it might not.

Windows hides the application data folders and you must override the setting to find anything it contains.

Hi, I am a newbie to mac's , but i am considering buying the following mac to hopefully run a version of garageband(though i am unsure as to the versions available and what will run on this mac?).
The mac is a power pc g5 with a 160gb hd 2gb ram osx 10.5.1 is installed(i am now aware that i can update this to 10.5.8 via apple) what verisons of garageband work best on this set up ? the mac would come with a disc ilife08 though i am not sure if this has any music software on it?

Thanks for the reply, i am interested in this mac to try out this platform....i understand what you are saying.....but i do not wish to spend too much money on something i may not get on with(even though people say macs are the best).
I thought that the price i can buy this mac(£100 all in) was a good entry level to look at this platform and if i like it i can always invest further money down the line in an intel based mac.
Can anyone advise if this spec can run the garage band on the ilife disc?
Is it possible on the version on ilife 08 to use appleloops?

Which Hard Drives work in Power Mac G4 Dual 1.42

I would like to upgrade my Power Mac G4 Dual 1.42 and add another hard drive but I'm not sure which type will work. I read in support docs that the machine supports ATA drives. Does this mean ATA-100, Ultra- ATA, SATA or something else? I'm not positive on all the differences or what is supported. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The fastest drives currently available are the ones that will be sold as sATA drives, because they are the newest. Those same drives will be sold with SCSI and pATA interfaces, and often with Fiber Channel interfaces. If you want the fastest transfer speeds of anything, choose Fiber Channel.
The advertised transfer rates of today's drives sound very impressive. But the bottleneck in today's drives is not the transfer rate. It is the bit density and the spin rate (RPM). A good 10,000 RPM drive (any interface) can produce a burst of data off the platters at about 50 MegaBytes a second. Then there will be a pause as it syncs up to read the next block.
The drive can be written to at a slightly faster rate, but we typically read four times as often as we write (over a large sample of typical tasks), so the payback of really fast writes to the drive cache is diminished.
sATA's major advantage is that it is Cheaper to manufacture. When that cost savings starts to be passed along to me, I will recommend it. Today you are paying extra for specs you will not see in daily use. What they are selling is Hype.
Would you pay more for a car because it has the motor mounts for the supercharged engine?

G5s require SATA 1.5 Gb/s, some SATA2 or SATA3 drives are SATA1 compliant & step down, others do not, still others will if there's a true SATA1 Drive in slot 0.

Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 - ZAP!

While looking for old files for a friend on his old Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5Ghz, a very strange thing happened; When we pressed the power button, there was a really loud and somewhat scary ZAP!
The red LED insided the tower went on and off and the white LED on the front panel also went off. I then unplugged the power cable, crossed my fingers, plugged the power cable back in and pressed the power button again. All that happened was that it clicked, the red LED went on and off and the white LED remained on. No chime, no fans, nothing.
At first guess, do you think it's the power supply?
I have not yet done anything else like try to reset the PMU, press the CUDA button, or check the PRAM battery. We removed the hard drives to continue looking for the files. This computer does not get used often but is part of a recording system that my friend would probably like to use again someday.
What do you suggest for my next move? Thank you very much.

I've at least had a bit of experience at it and am willing to give it a go. From the look of it, replacing/repairing the power supply would seem to be no easy task (if that is indeed the main problem).
I guess my friend could be the anesthesiologist or something for the surgery.
It'd be a shame to see this still-useful machine go to waste. When it was working and hooked up the MOTU 828 audio interface, the performance was impressive despite the age of the machine.
I'll also continue to scan through as many posts here and elsewhere as possible to learn all I can. I was hoping that perhaps someone who'd gone through the same or similar situation would chime in and share what happened and what they ended up doing.

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉
Processor Card A Ambient: 77.5℉
Processor Card B Ambient: 77.0℉
5) zapped the PRAM
6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
• Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
• Remove the power cord from the computer.
• Wait two minutes.
• Plug in the power cord.
• Turn on the computer.
7) followed the SMU reset instructions:

How to reset the PMU:
• If the computer is on, turn it off.
• Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
• If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
• Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
• Find the Cuda or PMU button
• Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
• Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
• If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
10) restarted the machine, ..
11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

An advice for an used Power Mac G5 dual core 2.3

I used a Power Mac G5 PCI-X (sett. 2003) 2.0 GHz, working with Photoshop. It worked great for yeras, but now, due to its typical logic board lack, it got broken and is unable to boot anymore (three times flashing power light).
Now, I use software for PowerPC CPUs, so I can't get new computers, because I should replace all the software too!
I'm going to buy an used Power Mac G5 dual core 2.3 GHz:

I tried heating it (not with the hair dryer), after about 1 hour it booted and worked very well, as in past. But when I powered it off, it started again with the same problem: unable to boot and three times flashing light.
I need a working system.
Furthermore, I removed the hard disk (sata 160 GB), and installed it in a Mac Pro: but it recognized only the second partition (data). So I run the Disk Utility and gave immediately an error (wrote in red and big), writing that the hard disk had a serious physical problem, and that if the computer was able to see the disk, I had to make immediately a backup.
But the three-times flashing light error of the G5 was not given due to the hard disk, because I tried several times to boot it from the OSX DVD, also removing the hard disk, and it always gave the same problem.

Power mac G5 dual, startup and fan problem

I have a Power mac G5 dual, 1.8 ghz, ramm 4.5GB. I guess from 2004. Only added more Ram three years ago. Never had any serious problem till a week ago. I have read a lot of similar questions and responses on my problem in this forum but till so far i have not been able to solve it.
Since a couple of weeks my mac sometimes did,nt recover from sleep. Starting up gave me some trouble because the fans were racing like **** and i had to restart several times to be able to boot normally. In the beginning just the upper fan next to de CD player ran fast and loud but now all of them get crazy at start up. Very rare times G5 is able to recover this (fans slowing down) and boot up, but this only in the safe mode.
I have cleaned the mac
i have resetted PRAM
i have used utility disk, all ok
i have unplugged for 40 min, reset in the machine, safe start up.
Checked memory
The only way to boot is in the safe mode. The fans start blowing fast but after 4 min. they slow down then the blue screen appears and mac builds up normally. But when i leave it for more than 1 hour in the sleep mode it will not recover, although i hear the normal sound of awaking/ accelerating disc. The screen keeps black and after a few minutes fans start blowing at full speed. Pushing 4 sec. the on/off button pulls it off.
I hope that someone can help me to solve this problem (me not being a tecnician at all) or that someone can give me a kind of diagnostic so that i can check the costs of profesional reparation. And start saving money for a new machine.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Power Mac G5 Dual Core freezing

Hi,
Everything works fine with my G5 with 4GB RAM, except one thing:
Sometimes when I work for a long time, my mouse justs freeze,
The red light near the RAM slots appears and the fans start being noisy ! (LED 7—Checkstop: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider)
I reboot and all just works fine until the next freeze
I ran Hardware test and apple diagnotics many times but all the tests including the ram test passed successfully.
It happens like 1 or 2 time by day. I couldn't identify the cause or the frequency of the problem (maybe Eyetv usb box, or a spécific app that causes the computer freezing ??? !)

Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2,3 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Curiously - we have two new Dual 2.3 G5s and they exhibit this same behavior. Suddenly freezing - and not necessarily while we have a lot of apps running. iTunes is always going in the background though. I'll start monitoring the temps on these machines and we'll see what happens. Does anyone know of a menubar app that might display CPU temp on the fly? Could be useful if we see a spike in temperature and then a crash.
One notable thing though, when it does crash, it crashes hard. Everything freezes, the audio (since iTunes is usually running) begins to skip on the last section of the track it was playing, sort of like a skipping record - only much faster. It also appears to have happened to one of the machines last night while it was asleep. I came in the morning the the fans were going crazy - and yes, the little red LED was on. What does that mean?

The best is probably the one that you can find..... getting hard to find Mac 8x AGP cards.....
Best OEM cards are (were) Radeon 850XT, Radeon X800XT, Geforce 6800 Ultra and Geforce 6800 GT, in order from fastest.
X800 vs. others
Now, most options are the above, used, or, flashed PC cards. PC cards include the above, but have one faster than even the X850XT- the Geforce 7800 GS.

Is there any way I can break out of the 4GB RAM limit into the world of 8GB RAM without having to buy a newer computer. I need to open a large 4.5GB TGA file in After Effects (48000 pixels x 36000 pixels).
Failing that, is there an application like RAM doubler I could use temporarily to get me though this job?

If there is not enough RAM, OSX will use space on the disk drive, so the amount of RAM should not limit the file size an application can handle, but speed will be reduced. 32-bit addressing can restrict the use of huge files, but there are ways that applications can get around it (at the expense of lower speed).
If After Effects has a file size limit, extra RAM will not help A later version (maybe using 64-bit mode) may handle larger files. 64-bit applications can be written to run in Tiger on G5s, but will be easier to write when Leopard is released.
You may be able to use some other application, such as Photo Shop, or Graphics Converter, to extract part of the TGA file, or reduce its size by changing its resolution, so you can use the result in After Effects.
