Power mac G5 dvi output

I have a dual 1.8 G5 which is giving me display trouble, when i plug my screen into it using a dvi cable i get nothing atol on screen, but when i use the dvi to vga adapter on the same screen i get picture ?

Hi-
Have you removed and reseated the graphics card?
Is the DVI cable in good condition?
Is it DVI-I or DVI-D?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface
If an OEM card, you have an ADC and a DVI port.
The digital portion of the DVI port could be dead.
Have you ever used the ADC port?
Do you have an ADC to DVI adapter?
http://www.smalldog.com/product/12651830
If your other port is not ADC, the card is not original.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • DVI to s-video adpater for Power Mac G4?

I'm attempting to view digitial photos on my Power Mac G4 on an HDTV with an s-video connection. I've tried Apple's "DVI to video adapter" for the Power Mac G5, but it doesn't work, even after clicking "Detect Displays".
Is there a DVI to s-video adapater from Apple or anybody else that will work with the Power Mac G4? If not, are there any other options?

The Apple DVI to Video converter only works with certain graphics cards. The card has to be able to generate interlaced video at the correct scan rate, and modulate the color onto a carrier signal. For other card you would need a scan converter like:
    <http://www.audiovisualdevices.com.au/viewprod.php?catid=&productid=CPT380>
This device has a VGA input, so you might need a DVI to VGA adapter. There may be other devices available with DVI input.

The current Mac Pro does not have Thunderbolt ports, it has Mini DisplayPorts that are physically identical to Thunderbolt but only pass video signals. The Mac Pro that is coming out in December (small black cylinder) will have Thunderbolt.

  • Mac mini DVI through AV Reciever with hdmi switching

I have a Harman Kardon AVR445 receiver which had the ability to switch between two hdmi inputs and send hdmi to my television (Viewsonic 27" LCD). I plugged in my mac mini (Intel Core Duo) using a DVI-hdmi cable and my cable box to my receiver. Everything worked great. I could switch between the computer and cable box and the picture was great on the tv.
Now, when I shut of the receiver and later turn it back on, I have a problem. The cable box still works fine. But when i switch to the hdmi input used by the mac mini, there is no signal. The only way I can get it back is to put the mini into sleep (via the power switch or the Front Row remote) and then wake it up again.
I'm trying to get some information from Harman Kardon on what happens to the hdmi inputs at power down (standby actually) but so far, the tech representative has only stated the get "shut down".
I've even tried using the program SwitchResX to always keep the display at 1024x768 in case the computer is switching to an incompatible mode but I have not had any luck here.
Does anyone have any idea what could be happening to this signal lines that would cause the mac mini to stop outputing it's display? And why won't it return when the receiver is turned on again?

I imagine you could spend a lot of time trying to debug this while getting no closer to a fix. If you really want this to work, what you might consider investing in is a Gefen DVI Detective.
    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1378
In spite of the typo in the first line on Gefen's website, what the DVI Detective does is store a monitor's EDID (not the computer's EDID as it says on the website; computers don't have any EDID. Monitors do.) and it will then "spoof" the monitor so that when the Detective is attached to the mini's DVI output, the mini will think there is always a monitor attached and will never get confused by an HDMI switch or a sleeping receiver or whatever it is that is causing the mini to lose track of your 27" TV. You will be able to set the mini to the output you desire and from the mini's point of view it will be as though the monitor never gets disconnected so it will constantly output the same format/timing. End of problem.

  • Use iMac in Target Display Mode with a Power Mac G4

I would like to connect my Power Mac G4 MDD (Model = http://support.apple.com/kb/SP63) to the new iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010) in Target Display Mode. That is, I want the new iMac to be the display for my Power Mac G4. Has anybody done this (including using the iMac 27 inch, Late 2009, which can also do this)? In a general sort of way, this sort of thing is described on this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924.
The problem: The iMac requires a Mini Displayport connection. The PowerMac has ADC and DVI-I display connections and also came with an adapter for converting DVI-I to VGA. How can I convert/adapt to get the appropriate Mini Displayport connection?
Gefen makes a converter (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8913) that will convert DVI-D to Mini Displayport, but the description explicitly says that it will work with DVI-D only while my PowerMac has DVI-I. I know that these are two different, incompatible connections.
Is there another converter that works with DVI-I? Or is there a way to adapt from DVI-I to DVI-D? Or how about a VGA or ADC to Mini Displayport converter?
    Thanks.

    japamac-
Thanks so much for your reply. You're right on target for what I'm looking for and that article is VERY helpful! If you don't mind, I do have a couple more questions/clarifications.
    1) First, I think that I didn't read the Wikipedia reference concerning DVI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface) closely enough. It includes the following paragraph. If I understand it and what you said, it shouldn't be a problem to connect the male DVI-D of the converter into the female DVI-I socket of my Power Mac. Right?
+The long flat pin on a DVI-I connector is wider than the same pin on a DVI-D connector, so it is not possible to connect a male DVI-I to a female DVI-D by removing the 4 analog pins. It is possible, however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female DVI-I connector. Many flat panel LCD monitors have only the DVI-D connection so that a DVI-D male to DVI-D male cable will suffice when connecting the monitor to a computer's DVI-I female connector.+
    2) I'm not clear on the difference between the Altona AT-DP200 and the Gefen converter. The Gefen converter is somewhat less expensive, so I'm trying to figure out what the downside is. The article you mentioned says that the ATP-DP200 "doesn't scale images", but that seems to only be an issue if I'm trying to connect other devices (PS3, Blu-ray), not if I just want to connect my Power Mac.
The description of the Gefen converter includes the following drawbacks:
+The only major drawback to Gefen's solution is no support for VGA devices or HDCP. A minor gripe would be the fact that the Gefen device only accepts one input resolution and only outputs one resolution (1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz). These limited options aside, the Gefen device looks like it could do the basic trick of transforming a DVI signal to Mini DisplayPort so that you could use your 27" iMac for a few more purposes, provided that the input signal carries the required 1920 x 1200 resolution.+
I'm not clear on what the practical impact of those limitations would be. I don't think the the lack of support for VGA devices or HDCP is an issue for my application. But I'm wondering about the statement that it only accepts one input resolution and outputs only one resolution (1920 x 1200) and the need for the input signal to carry 1920 x 1200. I take it, first of all, that the Power Mac can supply that input resolution. And, what is the impact of the device only having that resolution output to the iMac screen? That is, how would that look on the screen, ugly or okay? Finally, would the Altona device provide a better looking output on the iMac screen because it can apparently handle different resolutions? The manufacturer's description says, "Resolutions: all resolutions up to 1920x1200 (It is Important to select one of the resolutions that display
is capable of displaying, refer to your display’s users manual)."
    Thanks again.

  • Upgrading Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 Ram/Video Card/Hard Drives

    Hi there,
Ok so I am an avid Mac user, but have neglected one of my machines lately. This old Power Mac G5 just pushed the 3 year mark and I had a bunch of repairs done to it (New Logic Board, Hard Drive, Power Supply) before the Apple Care ran out. I used to do all of my editing and stuff on it but haven't had time this past year so it has just sat here and not gotten any use. I felt as if it was time to get back in the game so I picked up another Apple 20" monitor, some M-Audio studio monitors, a 11" Wacom, but feel the machine is too outdated to do anything.
Ok first off, I am looking to upgrade from the four 256 sticks (1GB) that I have in my computer with some 2 2GB kits (1GB x 2) (4GB total) and have been looking at the ram that Crucial suggests for this machine (8 Slots). Is there anything that I should look for in ram that will help me get through all of my 3D motion design faster (HD Final Cut too). I don't know a lot about ram when it comes to buffers and such, just how to buy compatible ram. Any suggestions?
Second I am looking to upgrade my video card. I currently have the GeForce FX 5200 with 64 MB of VRAM, which is completely unacceptable. I am looking for a card that can handle all of my motion work along with rendering in Final Cut, something with 256MB of VRAM or more.. I want something that has 2 DVI connections so I don't need an adapter like I currently do with this card to hook up both Apple displays. Suggestions?
Lastly I am looking to up my storage space on this beast. I currently have a brand new 160GB main HDD (Courtesy Apple Care) and a 250GB Maxtor internally. I would really like to have at least a TB of storage. My question is wether I should just keep the 160 for the main boot up drive and apps along with minimum documents to keep the speeds faster, and get a 500 internal and 500 exclosure, or get two 500's for internal?

    Hi-
With RAM, fancy isn't necessary, compatible is. Buffers aren't supported, so stick with the recommended memory. Memory should be 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMMs that are 2.5 volt, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, and DDR400-compliant (PC3200).
Important: DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the Power Mac G5 computer: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.
For two DVI outputs, and the power to run your software, the only choices are the Geforce 6800GT and the Geforce 6800 Ultra. For a bit less money, but requires an ADC to DVI adapter for second DVI, the Radeon X800XT will help with the softwares needs. These benchmarks will help you see the performance of the cards.
For storage, the 160gb will work for OS and applications, but you might as well add two 500gb-750gb drives. The new, enterprise drives have great performance, and though larger, will most probably work faster as a startup drive than the 160gb drive. These benchmarks are from a Mac Pro test, but the results illustrate the speed of the larger drives.
The Western Digital SE16 series, or the Seagate ES series offer excellent performance and reliability. See Storage Reviews. For a 1tb drive, see this article.
Of course, whatever you install, add enough external for full backup capabilities.

  • Dual monitor for Power mac g5 dual 2.3ghz

I wanted some advice on which monitors to get for a dual monitor setup and if its even possible to setup on my G5 or do I need a different video card?
    Here's my computer spechs:
Power mac G5 dual core 2.3 ghz (late 2005)
    Model: A1177
    Memory: 2GB DDR2 SDRAM
    HDD: 250GB
    OS X 10.5.8 Leopard
The only thing I run on this is logic studio 8. I wanted to expand my setup but not sure how.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks
    < Edited by Host >

It depends on which video card you have installed, though not much.  Whichever card you have installed, you should have two DVI outputs available.  With the minimum 256 Meg VRAM, you should be able to support two 1920x1080 monitors without a problem, and the "HD" monitors are getting very plentiful and dropping in price.  Were I to buy today, I would make sure to get an LED monitor, as that flavor should have a longer overall life than a florescent panel monitor.  You can find monitors in 23" dimensions for under $200 a pop, and more 27" monitors are showing up at a slightly bigger bite.

  • How do I format / install Mac OS X on an IDE HD in a Power Mac G4?

I purchased what appears to be a Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics) computer at a government surplus sale. There was no keyboard, no mouse, no software, no hard drive and no monitor. Someone at some point installed a PCI ATI Video card with a VGA and DVI-like output. Since there wasn't a monitor and since I couldn't tell whether the computer worked I offered $10 for the computer. The surplus staff were more than happy to sell it to me at that price.
The interior of the desktop appears to be "intact". Much to my (pleasant) surprise the computer powered up although a Folder with a question mark appeared and alternated between a question mark and Mac-Computer face. I powered down the computer, installed an 80GB IDE IBM Desktar Hard Drive, inserted the boot disk for a Mac OS X G4 Laptop and rebooted the computer. I didn't actually expect the computer to boot but I thought I make an attempt anyway.
So my question is ... what do I need to do to format the hard drive I put in this G4 Desktop computer and then install Mac OS X?
I'm thinking I'll need to get a Mac keyboard and a Mac Mouse as well or will straight-up USB mice and keyboards work?
    Thanks for any assistance.

On the Apple site the two cheapest Apple Keyboards are $49 for the extended 10 key and for the keyboard without the 10 key (what's up with that??)
The extended keyboard is nice, but you need to have OS X 10.4.1 or later installed and have the keyboard software update installed before you can use it.
The "short" keyboard is a USB version of the wireless, which is also sans 10 key. Apparently there is a demand, but I don't care for it.
The short board requires Leopard 10.5.6+.
A white or black Pro keyboard is a good board, usually from $10.
How does the PowerMac G4 BIOS recognize the connected hardware?
By virtue of the firmware in the ROM of the connected device.
All devices must have Mac specific ROM, or, in the case of an optical drive, be from the same era (or earlier) as the OS.
OS X, unlike Windows, is loaded with drivers. If a device is Mac compatible, and compatible with the OS version, it will be plug and play.
Also, there is a lot of "generic" device support built in.
In the case of late model optical drives in OS X, with Tiger previous to 10.4.11, using Patchburn utility will provide profiles for OS X to fully utilize the burn capabilities of late model drives.
DVD-ROM functions should require no additional effort/patches/modification.
most or all of this hardware is not or does not appear to be manufactured by Apple.
As with most manufacturers, components are third party.
A big difference is the ROM and drivers.
ROM is Mac specific, and in the majority of cases, only Mac ROM containing devices are compatible.
Drivers are very tightly controlled by Apple, and typically, unlike Windows machines, manufacturer firmware updates often times cannot be applied, or require hacks to perform.
Generally speaking, if Apple hasn't issued a firmware update for a device, there may not be one.
Of course, there are exceptions to this "rule of thumb" for aftermarket third party devices.
Once I have an Apple Keyboard, how do I access the "BIOS" on the PowerMac?
Unlike a Windows machine, this is not a necessary measure to use the Unix based OS X.
The only thing close to BIOS is Open Firmware.
    Accessing OF is typically unnecessary.
Since it appears that the PowerMac recognizes the CD-DVD player should I still get the OS X CD's or am I okay with getting the OS X DVD's?
I'd get DVD, unless the CD set is a real buy.
I have some extra SDRAM I can scavenge if it's the right kind of SDRAM.
Biggest issue, besides SPD in the EEPROM is density. Macs need low density RAM, and will usually not recognize high density RAM.
Firmware parameters are strict, and OS parameters for RAM tighten with each later version. RAM must be of the proper specification, or it will be incompatible.
There is no user controlled timing adjustment, etc. done in a BIOS. It is all set "in stone" and a user is always best to use only RAM that is "Guaranteed Mac Compatible".

  • PCI wireless possible?  RAM location for 233MHz Power Mac G3?

    Hello All!
I just added a free Power Mac G3 233MHz to my collection! For fun, I want to install 10.2.8, add 768 MB RAM, 40GB HD, PCI USB 2.0, PCI ATI 9200 and a PCI Macwireless or Aria wireless card. I want to keep the 233MHz CPU! My first question is, how do I install RAM? I pulled the cover and thought it would be in plain sight like the PCI area. Also, I found two PCI wireless cards online that will work with the 233MHz G3 under 10.2.8 using Airport software. Has anyone had luck using wireless? I searched the forum and found no results.
Thanks in advance! I'm glad to be part of the Beige G3 community!

Since you have a good collection of Macs already, maybe think about what you want to use this machine for, and what upgrades you really need. The ATI 9200 may be overkill, since the stock 233MHz CPU will not really be fast enough to run any of the real-time 3D graphics apps that would require the 9200, however, you would be able drive multiple monitors, one-DVI & one-VGA, from the 9200, in addition to the built-in Macintosh video output. What specific apps do you want to run on it?
To use the built-in Macintosh video output with a standard VGA monitor you need a Macintosh to VGA adapter. There is an on-board VRAM slot that you can fill with a 4MB module to increase the color depth and resolution options to use a larger monitor on the built-in video card, if you decide you want to use the built-in video rather than a PCI video.
It might be hard to find, but maybe you could get a used ATI Radeon Mac Edition for a little less money, but if you want to buy a new PCI video with warranty, I think the 9200 is the only option.
One thing that is abysmally slow in the G3's is the on-board ATA33 which actually runs at about half-speed of what is expected. You are lucky to get 16 MB/sec throughput max. A good alternative, if you have the spare PCI slot, would be to add an ATA66 PCI card or better, which will also add Master/Slave support, but requires some creative ATA-cable origami to reach from the PCI card to the hard drives in the expansion bays, but it is possible. You could get roughyl 40 MB/sec from an ATA66 PCII drive. Booting and launching apps would be not quite twice as fast, but definitely noticeable.
The extra RAM you plan to get will definitely help, but if you lack enough RAM both OS 9 and OS X will use virtual memory swap space on the hard drive, so having that faster through put will also help improve general performance.
But, if it's just for fun and messing around this may not be an important issue for you anyway. Just something to consider.
You might be able to use an external wireless USB device (not sure if drivers are available for 10.2 for any on the market today) or wireless Ethernet adapter (no drivers needed, but still limited to slower 10BaseT speed on the G3), to free up one of the PCI slots for the ATA66 card. If the built-in Ethernet is still functional, can you just run a wire?
If you can get 10.3 I'd recommend that, 10.2 just seems to have been not quite as stable, but I really can't remember if that may have been due to Norton Utilities that I was also using at the time.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ has some old do-it-yourself upgrade articles on the G3's.
http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/ also has good Mac-customer support and knowledge of compatible products.

  • MAC to HGTV OUTPUTTING SUGGESTIONS

    Hi
I used to stream online movies from my Power mac to my HGTV via the DVI to Video Apple adapter.
Just upgraded to the new Mac Pro with the NVIDIA 8800gt card and realized the adapter is no longer supported (it only works with a couple of ATI cards)
Basically I've been researching into getting some sort of - USB/Firewire based or VGA/DVI based, etc hardware which will help me output my desktop (mirroring or extending it) onto my HGTV. Possibly there is software which helps in the process and maybe substitute the rather obsolete "video mirroring" process.
    Any suggestions?
There are so many option to turn you Mac into a TV but so hard to do the opposite
    Thank you

    Hello,
i'm also a new Mac user (Vista did the trick , and i found this article on the Apple support website.
Below information can also be used to do the inverse... Mac to PC.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392
It explains how to do a backup to CD/DVD. When you have a large library, multiple DVD's will be used.
It tried it out with a portion of my lib, burned a backup with my PC, and imported it on my MacBook. Works great! All but last played information is copied over...
Even Podcast, Movies etc are taken into account, also music not residing within the iTunes folder. After the restore on Mac, everything is properly placed within the iTunes folder you assigned.
    Enjoy,

  • Three Monitors in a Power Mac

    Dear All,
I have a Power Mac with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 card, I need to connect three monitors to that card. The main one and I need the second and third monitor having the same video or image, I already bought a DVI splliter and did not work, and also I used two mini DVI connecters and the regular DVI with three monitors and I am not getting the three signals.
Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics

The Apple articles tell you the path Apple has laid out for your success, but not the entire picture.
To drive three displays off these cards, you need all converters to be ACTIVE, POWERED converters. The signal levels must be re-driven, and the Driver circuits to do this cannot quite get enough power off the card itself to do this.
This article on AMD/ATI web site has an additional descriptions and "Rules" in the paragraphs at the top of the page. The tables below list some qualified adapters under the correct headings.
Read Carefully: DisplayPort is not MINI DisplayPort, and there are headings for ACTIVE as well as PASSIVE included.
Also note that Amazon searches do not always return EXACT results.
"Dual-Link" contain double data signals, for servicing SINGLE displays that are wider than 1920 wide.
The Mac is completely capable of Mirroring displays in any combination on the same Display card.
The USB-to-DVI box BDAqua cited is an interesting way to get an additional display output, but is probably not needed since your 5770 can already support three displays if you use the right adapters. It is said to be s-l-o-w.
