Power Mac G5 fan noise?

I'm a student from China. I recently brought a Power Mac G5 from one of my friends. But there one thing bothering me is that the fan runs very loud. Even if I put on my earphone I can still hear the fan. What should I do? Is there any way to solve this problem?Ahh the noise makes me crazy.TAT

Hello,
Have you blown the dust out yet?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

You may need to find ASD, (not available to the public), to calibrate the fans.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware and report this upto *but not including the Serial#*...

My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen.  Any suggestions? Many thanks! Richard

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • Power Mac Quad fans going into overdrive

    Hi,
I've been experiencing some strange issues with my Power Mac Quad G5 recently. The issue seems to coincide when I'm running either one of the three listed programs (FLV2 iTunes, Handbrake or Reel Bean) when they are compressing or converting files. On a couple of occasions when i've left the programs running over a period of time i've come back to find the fans in complete overdrive mode, the screen black and the computer completely unresponsive to any key commands. I have to hold the power button in for 5-6 seconds to shut it off. It re-starts normally and runs fine. Any help would be greatly received.
    Thanks

Hardware monitor is the application that will monitor temps & other stuff (CPU voltages, fan speeds) http://www.bresink.de/osx/HardwareMonitor.html. I used it on my dying G5, the data always ended abruptly when the crash happened.
I think your G5 is doing the same as many others, namely crashing while asleep, then the fans go up to 100% I'd strongly recommend you disable sleep and see if it happens again. My 3 year, 2 month old G5 became useless after one of these 'sleep crashes', I think it is possible for the hardware to become damaged during one of the events, or it is the reason for the 'sleep crash'.
There are lots of threads on 'fans on full blast', 'turbo fans', 'jet fans', 'sleep jet fans'… in the G5 forums, I haven't seen one that has an answer to solve it, but consider stop using sleep & keep an eye on the number of CPU's the G5 boots with, lots of G5's have lost CPU's and I suspect this is part of the issue.

Good luck & tell Applecare about it if you are covered.

  • Power mac beeps, fan goes to high, does not start up?

swapped out one of the harddrives, not the startup drive,  now when I try to start up the computer beeps a few times, fan goes into hyperdrive and stays there. Nothing else happens. Computer does not start up.

    If it won't start again...

  • Power Mac G4 dead battery ?

I am wondering if my battery is dead.
I had stored my G4 Dual 1.25 GHz MDD for about 5 months while I moved to a new location and built my new recording studio. Upon powering it up it ran fine the first day (only had it powered up for about 10 minutes). The second time (a few days later), it was fine for 10 minutes, then the displays went off on their own (they weren't set to sleep). They would come off and on intermittently. When they were on, sometimes I had use of the mouse and keyboard and sometimes I wouldn't. After a few minutes of this they would stay off. Once they were off, the power button did not respond like it usually does. If I held it down or 5 seconds trying to power off, it would not respond. It didn't matter how long I held it, it would never power off. The only way I could power off was to pull the plug. After doing that, I restarted and reset the PRAM. It powered up and I had to reset the date and time. It seemed like it was ok for a minute, then the monitors went dark again, went on and off 3 or 4 times, then stayed off. The power button again did not respond normally.
Is this all due to a dead battery, or is there another problem ?
In the new studio, I did set up the G4 on it's side.
I'm wondering if this had anything to do with it.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Steve
    G4 Dual 1.25GHz MDD   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Thanks or your help, Tom.
I tried reseting the PRAM, and I also reset the PMU button.
I think there is something wrong with the logic board.
    I will re-post with a new title.
The heat sync is extremely hot, and the larger fan that is directed at the heat sync is not working.
I just found this article when I did a search for power mac G4 fan: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95038
in that article, it mentions 2 LED's that should be either both on or both off, and there is only one of these LED's that is light
<1. Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics): Check LEDs DS7 and DS8 on the logic board. In a working unit, these LEDs should be in sync with each other: both on or both off. If one LED is on and the other is off, there is a problem.>
any idea what this means ?
    thanks

  • My power mac G5 won't boot up but has red flashing light and intense fan noise.

I Have a Power Mac G5 that flashes a red light that I've never seen before. There is nothing on the monitor and the fan noise is incredible.
HAs anyone ever had this problem?

    Hi Michael,
It's normal for the fans to go full speed if the OS won't load to handle them.
Where is this red light, on the logic board, or front panel?
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Mac Pro will not boot, constant loud fan noise and nothing else

    hello,
earlier tonight,i put my mac pro on sleep, then later on, when i wanted to take it off sleep and use it, it made the loud fan noise, which it always does but goes away, but this time it the fan wount slow down and the loud noise stays and i dont see anything on the screen. im guessing the fan noise is the ATI x1900 card...
any help please..i just bought it 2 months ago...

Hi, here are the steps I would go through. I would unplug the Mac Pro completely from everything and look at the video card's fan intake to make sure it isn't plugged and just make sure everything "looks" correct. I would then plug the machine back into one monitor/keyboard/mouse (leave all the other peripherals disconnected. Once that is done push the power button. Does anything happen? If not then if you have another mac and an external hard drive, make a copy of the OS on the drive and see if you can get the Mac Pro to boot off that drive. If the video card doesn't work then it will not show anything when booting off an external drive. If the external boot does work then I would suspect that you have a bad hard drive (or it crashed). At that point I hope you have a back up of all your data and such.
Mind you these are steps I would go through. What a nightmare. One other thing to check, make sure your monitor didn't die.

  • E-Mac fan noise

Is there any way of quietening the fan noise on the E-Mac. Mine is four years old but the noise now drives me nuts!

Is your fan making noise different than it used to like something is going wrong with it? Or is it just loud like it has always been?
It might be worth while to open up the eMac and clean it out. Something like 6 screws requiring a 2.5mm hex wrench and then three more with a Philips screwdriver. Placed face down, the white exterior lifts up, stop after 4-6 inches, reach inside and unplug the power button cable, then you can lift the exterior free. Fan is on top. One connector/cable to disconnect and then four screws to pull it out. Give it a good cleaning as well as the rest of the eMac to blow out duct blocking dust bunnies. Inspect the rubber "shocks" the fan mounts with and make sure they are in good shape. If one or more is deteriorated, then your fan might be vibrating against the hard parts of the Mac making it much louder than normal.
The CRT is charged up and has high voltage, but it is covered by a rubber boot and is on the opposite side of the stuff you will be cleaning, so be careful and it shouldn't be a problem.
After that choices include fan speed controller additions or modification to your Mac. Not really simple tasks.

  • Fan noise after downloading Mac OSX 10.4.6

After I downloaded Mac OSX 10.4.6 I noticed that my fans made a little noise and seem to be somewhat louder. This was not the case prior to me downlaoding the new version of Mac OSX. Has anyone else experienced this problem and what is the remedy?

  • Power Mac G5 2.0 DP Very Loud Fan

I was just given a Power Mac G5 2.0 DP that was pretty much stripped down to nothing. I've added a DVD-ROM drive (even though it came with a Super Drive), I've added 4 Gb of ram (2x 1 Gb, 2x 512 Mb, 4x 256 Mb) and I cleaned all the dust and soot from it (it came from a heavy smoker and everything I've gotten from him stinks) and I'm still looking for a hard drive.
However, even though I've got all this added I still have one problem. The problem is that there are 2 fans that are on full power, the front intake fan and the hard drive cooling fan. If I unplug the hard drive cooling fan the front intake fan runs at normal speed but if I disconnect the front intake fan the hard drive fan still runs at full power.  It is missing the Air Deflector Shield and I slid a piece of paper into the one slot because I read here that if the air deflector shield isn't there the fan(s) will run at full power and now the red light on the motherboard (logic board Mac geeks seem to call them) is off but the fans are still running at full power and I can't work with the noise and that's a problem because I am a PC guy (Sorry Mac people) that uses Macs for all my video, photo and sound editing because my PC ***** at all those tasks.
When I turn it on I do hear the famous Bong sound that's been around since the days of the PowerPC 603 so I know it's working and I don't have a DVI to VGA adapter so I can't connect it to my KVM switch to see if I have video but I am getting an Apple Studio Display tomorrow to test this with until I can get an adapter.
    Thanks if anyone can help!

Does anyone know if you can resize a hard drive partition from inside the OS X installer (10.5.6)?
Supoosedly you can in 10.5.x, not 10.4.x without deleting everything, but without a clone I would not attempt it.

  • Fan noise when I Target Disk Mode - power supply or 500 GB drive, or RAM?

I have a Revision B iMac G5 which falls squarely in the power supply replacement program and has had the power supply replaced twice. I'm wondering if my extra RAM, or larger hard drive could be to blame for the fan speeds upramping at random during normal operation, and always when I Target Disk Mode the machine. I have a Western Digital WDC WD5000KS-00MNB0
and two 1 GB RAM modules with the following spec PC3200U-30330.
Before I try to pin down the cause one by one, has anyone noticed whether there are 500 GB drives on these Macs which will not up the fan speeds? Has anyone noticed whether target disk mode on these models will not increase the fan speeds when RAM is upgraded to 2 GB?

I have the same iMac as yours. Changed the original 80 gig hdd to a 250 gig. Both drives are seagate barracudas. I also upgraded the memory to 2gigs. The fan noise was terrible.
6 months later a ram module gives up the ghost. I originally thought hard drive, so purchased a Western digital 500 gig WDC WD5000AACS-00ZUB0. (The green power series).

    Fans very quite. still waiting for the replacement ram module;
to see if extra ram will increase fan noise

  • Added Ram to Mac Mini & Now There is Loud Fan Noise

    Hi everyone,
Today I bought a Mac Mini Core Solo. I brought it home and opened it to add an additional 1gig of ram. I now have 1 stick with 1GIG and 1 stick with 256mb of ram inside of it. After adding the additional ram I closed the case and turned the power on. It picked up the new ram but it is now making a really loud fan noise. I'm nervous that something has gone awry. Any suggestions for as to what is wrong? Did i do a big bad?
    I'd appreciate any advice!

Sounds like a connector to the fan was pulled loose when you dismantaled the mini to get at the memory slots.
    See the pictures here...

Open her up and check that the wires from the fan a re seated onto the motherboard correctly.

  • Mac Pro 2x2,8 Ghz - Fan Noise - Please help evaluate

    Hi Guys,
Since yesterday, I'm the proud owner of a Mac Pro 2x2,8 - Really happy - really nice machine.
However I'm slightly irritated by the posts I've read all over the internet, saying that you can't hear the fans of this machine at all in idle.
As you may have guessed, my box is not silent at all - it is quite quiet compared to other noisy PCs, yes, but no match for the previous iMac 24" which it replaced. You could hardly hear the iMac versus now the Mac Pro... you notice it's there... sitting under the desk - audible.
I realize that fan noise is highly subjective, and I'm using the Mac in a completely silent environment. No AC, no nothing. I've tried the following: removing the hard drive and silencing the graphics card... Upon bootup the Mac would quickly "turbo" it's fans and then go to it's normal state. The loudest fan (which is drowning out all other noise) is the one at the bottom front (CPU?).
Looking at istat, it's in normal parameters (500rpm or so) and doesn't move up or down...
Comparing it to other devices, it would sound like a PS3 when having played 1 hour (fan speed at level 2-3) or an (quiet) xbox in idle mode (dvd not spinning). I know... geeky comparisons
Now, again - not close to my interpretations of "whisper quiet" "can't hear it at all"... "only hear it when I put my ear to the grill" "sounds like it's cooled passively"
Which makes me think that either
    a) people out there are deaf /
    or
    b) my Mac needs a closer look by a genius
    Would really appreciate your opinions.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    hey tom,
you might have the same problem i have. I have the 2.8 octo 2008 mac pro. and it used to be whisper quiet. I was amazed. But recently as in the last few weeks the graphics card fan has become audible. I put in an e sata adapter last week and while inside the mac pro I took a look at the fan to see if it was dusty or visibly distressed. Nope. Couldn't find anything wrong with it. So now i'm just dealing with the noise. Which is too bad cause I really really really don't like fan noise. But the air conditioners on most of the time now so I really can't complain about a little fan noise compared to the ac's grumbling.
but i'd like to know if others are having this problem
    thanks,

  • Fan speed problem Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC - please help

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
    Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1
I have included below Links to download a sound file (.m4a) that I recorded of the fan speed problem and both a .pdf and .spx files of my system profile.
    download sound file

down load .pdf file of my system preferences
    http://homepage.mac.com/rep3/filechute/systemProfileREP3-G5dual.pdf
When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
    Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉
    Processor Card A Ambient: 77.5℉
    Processor Card B Ambient: 77.0℉
    5) zapped the PRAM
    6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..
    http://tinyurl.com/ykomqkn
Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.
