Power Mac g5 hangs on boot up when hot

My Power Mac G5 hangs on boot up when hot, such as after I have been using it a while. It won't get through the boot up process and I have a blank (dark) screen- no picture. Sometimes the little Mac chime sound doesn't even complete, and it quits abruptly 1/2 way through the sound.
Once the machine cools it does start... at least so far.
Any thoughts?

Any Extra Ram, Extra Peripherals, Aftermarket Video Card?
Will it boot with a CD?
When was the last time you checked the RAM in "About this Mac?"
Can you monitor internal temps thru software ?
Possible bad ram, bad power supply, bad video card.
Try removing an extra add-on components and see if that helps.
Also, I've found startup freezes can corrupt HD start-up files badly.
Just had similar issue in my single processor, ancient 1.6 Gig G-5.
Bad Radeon Card. Put the original back in and it works fine.
Google "G-5 Power Supplies" and check out the information....known issue.
Good Luck

  • Power Mac G5 won't boot with Lion?

After installing Lion, my early Intel 2010 Power Mac G5 won't boot. There were no problems for the first 2 days. The third day my G5 wouldn't boot at all. Not using Lion's recovery function, many attempts to boot from a previous system disk, and firewire target mode. The keyboard seems to be dead after attempting to boot except for the DVD eject key. All I get is a grey screen with an icon of a folder with a question mark within the folder. This icon blinks on and off continuously. Since the keyboard isn't working, I can't reset the PRAM, start in safe mode, or any other keyboard commands. The failed boot doesn't even get far enough for the Apple window to open. I replaced the hard drive and accomplished nothing except for spending even more money and time.
This is VERY frustrating! Has anyone else had a similar problem with booting after Lion't installation??
    Thanks.

    1) you have a Mac pro Early 2009, remember this. It avoids confusion here in forum
    2) you're HDD's OS cannot be found by the firmware of the Mac hence it results to a question mark
perform the following(recommended to use a USB keyboard)
    a) startup manager
press and hold option on startup. Do u see your HDD?
    b) if you have a back up of your data then you can boot to the install disk and perform an erase and install
repairing the permission will not work since the disc's OS is different from the HDD's OS.

  • My Power Mac G5 hangs when my Ethernet internet connetion is active

I'm having a very weird problem with my computer. When the Ethernet connection to my router is active the computer hang in very basic operations. for example like going back to the log in window, switching from one user to another and connecting to my share files in my windows base computer.Like i said it only happen when the Ethernet cable is connected to my router or Cable Modem and the internet connection is active. I know this because when the computer is not responding I have unplugged the cable off the router and the computer respond right away. The computer was working fine until I decided to move it from one part of the room to another and had to disconnect all the cables. I using a Linksys wireless-b broadband router for the network.
This is the Setting for the connection:
    location = automatic
    using DHCP
I got personal file sharing, window sharing and printer sharing on.
Please somebody help me this is very annoying

Click on the icon on the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and then open the folder Library inside, followed by Preferences and then rename the ByHost folder inside. If the issue persists, open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo mv /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/ByHost_old/
This command will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear on the screen while you are typing it. Files in the ByHost folders contain your computer's MAC address as part of the name, and are only consulted if your computer's MAC address matches the string in the name.

  • Power mac G4 hangs at startup with gray screen

    Hello all,
I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model.  512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook pro
I can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
    Reset PRAM
    Started computer in single-user mode
used fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
    Started computer in verbose mode
startup seems to hang when this appears:
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: (ipc/send) invalid destination"
    "LayState: cannot map display interlocks."
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection"
    "Cannot connect to server"
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection"
    "Connection called with invalid connection"
    Tried re-installing with system discs
The only discs I received with the power mac G4 when I purchased are orange and say "SSW version 8.6" on it" ("iMac Software Restore" and "iMac Software Install")
Computer does not respond when holding down "C" key at startup with either disc in the drive
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as ONLY the internal HD - not either of the CDs I mentioned above; I wonder if it no longer recognizes the original CDs because I updated to 10.2.8 from 10.2.1 before the issue?
    I also have an install disc for OS X 10.4.7 - for a friend's iMac (G5)
When holding down "C" key at startup with the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive AND the internal HD
When I choose the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When I choose the internal HD the startup hangs at the gray screen I mentioned above
At this point, I don't know what else to do.  I believe the computer is still good because I can see everything on it when I put it into target disk mode; it just refuses to make it through the startup/login process.  I have read discussion threads that suggest re-installing the OS using another computer - but I don't know how to do that.  I also wondered if there was a way to tell the computer to re-install the software using the original CDs - but from the command line (in single-user mode)?
    Someone - PLEASE HELP!

Sorry, SU Single User Mode, OF Open Firmware as these 2 where mentioned before.
As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.
It could be the User's files or login messed up, if you want to try something a little more desperate...
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...

Except you could just use Target mode and move or rename that file.

  • Mac Mini hangs on boot with grey Screen. No response to Keyboard

    Hello,
yesterday my Mac Mini (C2Duo, fifth generation unibody) startet to behave strangely. First thing was that it was not responding to the mouse(connected throught the keyboard)
I replaced the mouse and everything seemed to be ok.
I then did the latest update available on Mountain Lion and went home.
When I came back this morning, the Mac Mini hang with grey screen. I restarted. Again grey screen.
    Chime comes. Then nothing.
Tried everything from http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570 but nothing worked. The Mac Mini does not seem to be responding
to any keyboard command to enter safe mode, select boot device etc. No firmware password has been set.
Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated.
    Yours,
    Andreas

Have you reset the SMC, then held down the mouse button while restarting to get the CD out?
    Reset SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Power MAC G4 doesn't boot up, keeps shutting down.

I have a Power MAC G4 dual 1.25 GHZ with mirrored bay doors. When I start the computer and it begins to rev up it shuts down. After several tries it eventually boots up, but when i go to restart, it shuts down. Any Feedback is this a major problem ?

    Stevink, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Is this a new occurance? Are you using any wireless devices? After it eventually boots up, does it stay up for a long time?
Some USB devices can cause the opposite - restart instead of shutdown. Don't know if your case could be caused by a USB device. What USB devices do you have connected? Disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard & mouse. Now does it startup OK?

  • Power Mac G4 MDD Intermittent Boot from Internal HD?

I have a Power Mac G4 MDD with a 1.42G Dual Processor, 2GB Ram using a 500GB HD operating OS 10.5.8 The problem I am having is that my computer will boot just fine for a week or so then all of a sudden it won’t boot up at all from the internal HD. Here are the symptoms; I get the ‘chime’, then the grey screen appears with the black apple logo and I see the ‘spinning gear’. The spinning gear stops (after about 15 secs) then it goes to a light blue screen and just sits there forever. I usually see this ‘blue screen’ for about 2 seconds just before my desktop appears on the screen during a normal boot. I could go home tonight and it might boot up just fine, I don’t know, but it’s very frustrating. Things I have tried – ( I have two MDD’s so it’s pretty easy to troubleshoot) but still no successful boot sequence.
    1. Reset PRAM
    2. Changed MOB battery
    3. Attempted a boot from another known good HD
    4. Removed the 500 GB HD and installed in another MDD and it boots every time.
    5. Replaced Motherboard with a known good spare I have.
    6. Swapped out RAM modules
I’m not sure what’s next? Processor?, Power Supply??, Video Card??
Maybe someone out there has seen or witnessed this strange occurrence on their MDD?

I have not reseated ALL the connectors but I will try that first tonight. I removed the AC last night so when I get home I will power it up and try again. When I can get it to boot reliably, it's usually been following an AC outage overnight or a couple of days.
    Thanks,

I have a 2005 Power Mac G5 Duo 2.5 Gigahertz computer which will not boot up. When I turn it on, the power light does not light up, nor does it show a flashing light signal. Soon after the fans start up they become loud. I tried reseting the smu, installed new memory, zaped the PRAM, and gave it some time. Those things helped me before, But not now. PLEASE HELP ME!

  • Power Mac G4 won't boot in OS X

I have a number of G4's which have been upgraded to Tiger. I am on the last machine running 9.2.2 and it refuses to boot in 10.4. I have tried the Tiger installation CDs, from a firewire drive with a good copy of Tiger on and from a new internal disk with a clean copy of tiger on (Installed via another Mac). All I get is the G4 sitting there with a blank screen with the fan running - no start up question marks or anything.
Does anyone have any idea why this mac won't recognize OS X at all?
    TIA
PS Firmware update claims that it is not needed.

First let me ask you this, when you install for the first did your machine boot from the 10.4 or not.
And if you did, sounds like everything is ok if you have what you said you have
    G4 350mhz, 512mb RAM, 40 gb drive with OS 9 ,80 gb drive with 10.4
    (1) Have you check the Battery Type 3.6V Lithium maybe is out.
    (2) did you removed the processor if is 350mhz or did you remove the video card.

  • Power Mac G4 400 AGP boot from CD/firmware question

    Hello-
What is the firmware that I need for 9.0.4? I have 9.0.4 installed, but I want to erase and do a clean install and then move on to 9.1 and on. My system profiler says that my BootRom is 3.2.6f1.
I'm trying to boot from a CD (via inernal CD drive) and I'm not having any luck and I'm wondering if it's a firmware problem. My machine displays the start up disk on the desktop and will open its contents, so it seems that the cd drive is ok. When I hit the apple dropdown menu and restart, I press the "C" and all I get is grey. I get the start up chime, but then grey. I also tried the Start up disk function and was able to choose the OS disk for start up, but to no avail.
My start up disks did not come with the machine, but they are Apple G4 9.0.4 and the person I bought them from said they were intended for a G4 400 AGP computer, which I have. I might add that I have the 9.0.4power pc enabler installed as this was a school machine networked for school use. i don't know if this would make any difference. The problem may be the disks, but obviously, I'm hoping not.
Any help would be big help, thanks in advance.

    Hi, veesh678 -
Early models of the G4 (AGP) models came with OS 8.6; later models came with an installer for a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. The latter disk will have a blue-gray label, be named "Power Mac G4" with a subtitle "Software Install", and has a part number of 691-2657-A (the part number will be in fine print on the right-hand side of the label).
Non-current firmware will not preclude the machine from booting to that CD; a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD (white label, gold 9, no model named) probably will not work, although a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD should work fine.
The current firmware version for the G4 (AGP) model is v. 4.2.8, which can be downloaded from this article -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that to install that version the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive, and the firmware update must be run from the same hard drive.
Before installing firmware update v. 4.2.8, download and run DIMM First Aid (it's a free download) to verify the compliance of the RAM in the machine.

  • Power Mac G4 Won't Boot

I have recently received an old Power Mac G4 MDD. It will not boot. When I press the power button, the light will come on for as long as I press the button. There is no chime, and the fans do not spin. Nothing happens except that the light comes on until I release the button. I have tried the logic board reset and the PMU reset. I am not sure of the operating system or anything about the processor as it will not boot. It does have a hard drive and a cd drive. Thank you for your help.

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Power mac g5 doesn't boot

    Dear Apple Users,
I use an old power mac g5 and for some weeks I had prolbems loading all the fonts and some other hints of an coming breakdown.
This morning I startet the g5 and everything worked fine. After trying to restart it, the g5 wasn't able to boot again. I'm not sure whether it's an software or hardware-problem. Unfortunately I cannot find my system-dvd anymore. Do you have any hints whether it's usefull to buy another DVD or do you recommend to look for another hard drive (it isn't intell-baded, PPD). Do you have any experiences which could help me solving that problem?
    Thank you for your help,
    utomred

    Hello,
    Couple of things to try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

You may need a new Hard Drive, but it wouldn't be any use without an Install Disc.

  • Power Mac Lion Won't Boot! Fixes

Ok, I have the following: 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Power Mac that had 10.6.8, 4 GB MHz DDR@ FB-Dimm Ram over 4 slots. I had the original hard drive (Western Digital Caviar SE 250gb Ram HD model #WD2500AAJS-41RYA0) drive in this morning, and cloned it to a Seagate Barracuda SATA 1 TB 7200rpm 32 Cache Hard Drive. When I formated the new drive, I did it journaled. I took out the Western Digital and made the Seagate Barracuda the boot drive. I also installed a second drive, a Seagare Barracuda SATA 2 TB 7200rpm in bay 2. That drive is not journaled since I am storing video on it. Both of the new drives were formated properly and without issue. They worked all day without issue. This evening, I downloaded Lion without issue. It installed and rebooted. Everytime the computer boots, it goes to the "you need to reboot screen" aka "Mac Kernel Panic Screen" with four languages. Here is a link to the image: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742. Any ideas of what is happening or what I did wrong? Any thoughts on what happened? Any fixes? Help please. Do you need any other information?

OK. ALSO, I installed the OLD hard drive on its own and it boots fine. It seems like it can't find the new drive. Thoughts?

  • Dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (June 2004) referb - booting problem

Hi all - my dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (June 2004) decided to rev its fans and boot no more. When I push the power button in front, the white light comes on while pushing it, then goes off, yet I hear the fans starting, the hard drive spinning etc. The key board isn't getting power (the caps light doesn't go on) and after a few minutes the fans rev like a jet engine...starting slow then gaining speed. I can't open the DVD from the key board (have tried all usb ports). Have also looked through this discussion area and tried many of the solutions provided (reset the PMU, unplug, try different outlets etc.) Any help would be appreciated. I do have Applecare but they are closed for the night.
    Thanks for you help
    Dual G5 2.0 (June 2004) referb from Apple   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Your OS is not loading and the fans default into a speed up mode.
Power up and hold down the mouse button, the cd tray will spit. Insert Tiger/install disk and power boot holding c. (note: use a wired keyboard/mouse directly to the machine and nothing else for now)
In the Installer, select Disk Utility from the menu>Repair disk/permissions. note any errors you see.
If you can't access the drive, it might be dead. I hope you backed up files.
All you need to do is get a new drive and reinstall Tiger etc.
If you can get a 6 pin firewire 400 cable to each Mac and t boot the problem Mac. the hard drive should appear on the other which you can recover files.
If the OS is fried you can do a archive and install too.
