Power Mac G5 Quad: crashed and now seizing up and other major problems
My Power Mac (G5 Quad) crashed twice today (screen froze and stopped responding to mouse and keyboard), both when rendering in an application called Artlantis, although that could be a coincidence. Another possible culprit is that I used Migration Assistant to move a user account, applications and root level files from an Intel machine, onto this machine recently.
After the second crash startup was slow and problematic. Mouse wouldn't respond although I was able to type in username and password to login. I was able to manipulate things with keyboard but not mouse. Everything seemed to seize up and then it would follow some of the commands I'd made via the keyboard and then seize up again. I do remember one other instance of having a similar crash and symptoms about a week ago, before I migrated the Intel-based account, so maybe that's not the problem.
I managed, with some difficulty, to start up with the Install disk (10.4.2) and do a disk verification, which brought up two instances of "Illegal name" (just after the word Catalog). I then did a disk repair which it said was successful. Restarted machine but same problems.
I've tried to backup some data that's not currently backed up, by booting into target mode but the machine tends to seize up after a while. All types of booting seems to be getting gradually more difficult. Leaving the machine off for while helps with booting.
Booted into super user and did fsck, which it said was okay. Booted into Hardware Test and did an extended test which said it passed. The Hardware Test and the super user mode seemed to be the only modes that could run without the machine seizing up.
To get the data that's not backed up off the machine I wondered about taking the hard drive out and putting it into another of our Quad G5s... good idea or bad?
As for finding out what's wrong, any advice?Just some more observations. Hoping for new external hard drive to turn up today. In the time being I've been using the machine out of urgency.
The crashes seem to happen after an hour or two of using the machine. Most of the time there is no need for a hard shut down. The interface seizes up but after a minute or so I'm able to use the keyboard, including navigating between applications (command-tab) and shutdown (ctrl-eject -> tab to shutdown). Also, network or application processing activity continues, though what appears to be in a stuttering start-go manner. Activity on the keyboard seems to help this activity along, or at least helps you see any progress. If there's no activity on the keyboard the graphic interface catches up every moment or so on its own (just less often than if you're taping on the keyboard). -
I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.
Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...

I am running Firefox 3.6.24 on a Power Mac G5 Quad, OS 10.4.11. I have to run Classic. Can you recommend a browser to use since you won't be updating 3.6 anymore?
Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do NOT have; yours is a PPC Mac) '''''<u>and</u>''''' OSX 10.5 or higher.
*System Requirements: [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/4.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 4] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/5.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 5] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/6.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 6] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/7.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 7] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/8.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 8]
'''''The good news''''' is that Firefox 3.6.24 still supports OSX 10.4 and Macs with the PPC Mac architecture. '''''The bad news''''' is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

Hello!
I want to upgrade my Power Mac G5 Quad (Mac OS X 10.5.8) for video editing purposes.
Rendering, editing and exporting takes some time on my computer. I just want things to go faster.
What upgrades should I make?
Thanks in advance!!!Here are other video cards that you can search for that will also work in your G5.
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT with 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, and NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 with 512 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM

Video Card Recommendation for Power Mac G5 Quad
Can anyone recommend a video card upgrade for my Power Mac G5 Quad?
I am now running the nVIDIA GeForce 6600 card that came in the machine, but I'm wondering how much performance increase I'll see with a large image library in Aperture if I upgrade. I'm interested in all comments.
Also, is there a "medium" upgrade and a "kick-***" upgrade?
Thanks!
G5 Quad / 4.5GB Mac OS X (10.4.8)I hate to say it: At the moment there is no graphics card upgrade available for the G5 Quad and the other PCI-Express Power Macs. There are a lot of threads about this topic in this forum. It is simply a shame that Apple does not offer any graphics upgrade for their former top of the line machines - but they do offer them for their new Intel Mac Pro. Maybe one day ATI will offer an upgrade, but at the moment this is just a rumor. All you can do now is to buy a reflashed PC version of the GeForce 7800 or buy a ridiculously priced spare part GeForce 7800 from a store who is willing to sell you one (there is one on the web but i forgot the url).

I have a Power Mac G5 quad core (2006) and it does not work.
I have a Power Mac G5 Quad core (2006) and it does not work. The status light flashes twice and the fans blow full blast. The display does not show anything. Does anybody know what is wrong with my mac.
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
See which one your G5 has, should be the 1st one ..

Power mac g5 quad cpu runing hot
ok my power mac g5 quad the top cpu core 1 and 2 are runing really hot and ween itryed to turn it on this moring the fans all went to max and shut off i then tryed to trun it on again and it just went 'click' and i unpluged ever thing left it alon and came back about a hour later and tuned it on and ween it got to the main desk top the fans were on max and the top cpu cores were about 155f 165f and the outher cpu was runing fine what could this be a computer guy told me this could be that i need new thermal paste pleassss help
The thermal paste degrades after 3-5 years of use.
Whether anyone wants to or not, the thermal paste in ALL G5 machines needs replaced.
LCS systems, even without leaks, can have reduced performance due to sludge buildup or loss of volume due to evaporation and escape of those liquid vapors.
Serious consideration should be made towards rebuilding the LCS for longevity of the computer. -
i have Power mac g5 Quad 2.3 Ghz ,1GB X 2 Ram . 128 MB GPU.
today i trunon my mac , after few sec ...
RED lights trunon outside the RAM Slot
the 1st light top side of the RAM slot number 1 ( OverTEMP) LED 806
and The 2nd Red Light down side of RAM slot number 4 LED (806 CHECKSTOP)
After 3 or 4 Mints System going to Stuck , Hang . keyborad mouse not working !
Share with how to reslove this isse Thanks alotLikely it's rime to replace the thermal paste between the CPUs & the Heatsinks.
If it's a G5 Quad, it'd be 2.5 GHz though & check for coolant leaks...

Mac OSX 10.6.8 Kernel Panic Error
I have a mac with Intel core 2 duo and 4 gb ram. It also has a 500 gb hard drive. When I try restarting the computer, once in about 4 restarts, I get the kernel panic grey screen that says I have to use the power button to shut off the computer. I looked in the log files, but the log for kernel panic isn't saved. Please tell me how to diagnose this problem. I have a feeling it might be a driver error.
You could try booting from the original DVD disc that came with your Mac mini, then you could run Disk Utility and tell it to verify and repair the hard disk. You boot from the (normal part) of the DVD by holding down the letter C on the keyboard when starting your Mac up.
The same original DVD disc can also be used to boot in to a hardware test utility, to get in to the special hardware test mode you hold down the letter D instead of C.
While there can be various causes of a Kernel Panic such as bad memory (try taking the memory out and then reinserting it), damaged hard disk (I have already described how to test it above), another cause is having the wrong drivers (kernel extensions) for your Mac, this last possibility would be harder to diagnose other than building a new fresh copy of Mac OS X perhaps on an external hard disk. -
Intel Mac Mini constantly resetting then kernel panic
I've got a Mac Mini that on start up just constantly resets, I've tried to boot from the OS X install discs but as soon as the installer starts to load I get a Kernel Panic.
Can't think of anything else really, the machine's not been fiddled with or opened up. I've done the usual disconnect the cables and hold the power button reset but that doesn't help
Picture of the panic is here:
http://lenore.newmeja.com/stuff/panic.jpgIt's definitely not been opened, its kept in a locked room with a kensington lock on it. It's definitely the original Apple RAM.
I've tried booting from some other Mac Mini install media and I get the same kernel panic.
Need to get the machine back up quickly so I've been in touch with Apple who are just going to repair it under warranty. -
Mac Pro Freeze constantly - no kernel panic, no crash reports. Any ideas?
Dear all,
My good ol' Mac Pro (4.1-2009) which has been utterly reliable for years is now driving me cazy.
It freezes from time to time (let's say twice a day but sometimes not at all for 2 days in a row) - only possible option is hard reboot.
The screen just freezes, no kernel panic, no crash reports.
It has started after a ram replacement but then reverting to the original settings didn't change anything.
Tried all what possible: reverting to original ram (the Apple one), clean install on a new hard drive (10.8.4), replacing graphic card (4870 to 5770), Zap PRAM, resetting SMC, safe mode, clean new account, booting only with keyboard and mouse, Techtool Pro hardware tests-all passed (but not AHT as I can't find the original DVDs anymore), smc fan control, voodoo.
Some apps seem more enthusiastic at crashing than others especially Cinema 4D (when rendering), World of Warcraft (when playing), Photoshop CC (in OGL mode) but sometimes just dropping down a menu causes a freeze.
My eyes are full of tears.
Any idea? Someone had a similar experience?
I might start drinking.
Thanks.

ATI 5770Got a freeze but this time I also got a report! For some reason it makes me happy.
as I said, starting with just the keyboard and the mouse is enough to make this ****' machine freeze.

MAC Mini A1176 (MA607B/A) Kernel Panic / Not Booting
Hello,
I have a mac mini MA607B/A 1.66/2x1GB/60GB HDD, that is not booting. It Chimes and hands on the apple logo.
I searched this forum and I performed every solution I found. The mac is still doing the same thing.
I also changed the battery but no joy.
I inserted the CD that came with the MAC mini and it does exactly the same while booting from the cd.
I did a H/W check by holding the CMD+D keys and all tests were passed successfuly !!!
I booted in Verbiose mode and I have attached the log as a photo in this thread.
I really have no clue why it gives a kernel panic on CPU...
Temperature seems to be normal and the fan is working.
Any suggestions how to resolve this?Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I tried to boot in Open Firmware mode but it crashes almost imediately.
I have also Installed OSX 10.6 on an external usb hard drive of mine and tried to boot from that and it does exactly the same. I noticed that the external hard drive's light is on and binking while the computer is loading which means that it reads OS files. and after a while when the MAC freezes, the light goes completely off like there is no power supplied to it.
It does exactly the same thing even if i put the original disc that came with it and try to boot from that.
I entered Verbose mode again and now it always freezes after the "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient: Ready" line
Also the keyboard is not responding and the lighs of the keyboard are off as well. -
My Mac Pro is having constant Kernel Panic crashes since ML upgrade
Can anyone tell me what is causing this Kernel Panic so I can kill that program?

FireWire Device: built-in_hub, 800mbit_speedOS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Upgrade to a newer version of OS X as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
