Power Mac G5 seems to overheat and freeze on occasion

Over the past week, i have noticed my G5 overheating (fans blazing) and the machine frozen. What can I do to correct this problem? It's the SP 1/6 GHz model. Thanks.

There may still be other issues, but if you haven't done it already a good cleaning is a good thing to do. Overheating can cause a symptom like yours.

I had this problem about a month ago... the computer seems to lock up and freeze. Tried vaccuming the front and back ventilation and that seemed to help the last time, but today the problem seems to be re-occurring over and over. Any other suggestions.

  • I have a Power Mac G5 quad core (2006) and it does not work.

I have a Power Mac G5 Quad core (2006) and it does not work. The status light flashes twice and the fans blow full blast. The display does not show anything. Does anybody know what is wrong with my mac.

Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Power mac g5--won't boot, and I can't sleep

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone is awake and can help. My power mac g5, circa 2005, has always come with some problems, specifically, kernal panics. It's not bad RAM, but I have never tested the video card. Oddly enough, it seems to go down most often in the most in simple internet applications.
Today, it froze in Firefox and I cannot get it to reboot. It stalls/freezes in the gray apple screen. Called my IT friend, and he said to zap the PRAM. That brought it back up for a second, and then it froze again. I replaced the battery, no results.
I can't get it to boot in safe mode or even single-user- it freezes up as well. I certainly can't get it up long enough to load the boot disk.
It may be garbage...I can accept that...but it is holding hours of work. Will I be able to retrieve this??

Hi, I'm having same problem. G5 1.8 dual processor purchased March '05, won't boot. Not from cd either.
Took it to the apple geniuses and first was told it might be a bad board or processor and that I might as well just buy a new system. Well, I can't, because I still need to run some classic applications for business reasons, and because of that I'm stuck at Mac OS X 10.3.9. Anyway... I left my system with the apple geniuses and got a call 3 days later saying it was fixed @ no charge and that the 3rd party USB card was bad. They pulled it and said all was well.Great!, saving me $800 charge for a new board and over $430 for a new processor. So on the way home I buy a new USB hub get home start up and nothing! No change. Back to the Apple Store and after some testing this time I'm told it's definitely a bad hard drive. So, on the way home I buy a new hard drive. Get back, install the new HD and, you guessed it, can't format the disk, system won't boot from CD. BACK TO THE APPLE GENIUSES AGAIN! Now they tell me it's definitely the logic board. After 5 days I'm back where I started... except I have an old USB card that is most likely fine and new USB hub and a new HD I purchased because the Apple Geniuses told me they were bad! I asked them if they would apply a credit of some sort for the unnecessary purchases and my time (The closest Apple Store is 30 miles away), They politely said we appologize for the inconvenience, but no, we can't do that. I've been using Macs of all kinds since the early 1980's. And have never had one fail! Since I started looking into G5 problems, I've found many others with this startup issue. I feel there is a known issue with this series that apple is intentionally sweeping under the rug instead of issuing a recall or credit.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD OS X installation freezes

Hi, a friend of mine gave me a Power Mac G4 for free and I'm having issues getting an OS on it. It seems to be freezing any time there's lots of Hard Disk activity (typically near the extracting step in the OS X installer). I've tried different combinations of RAM/modules and I've got it set up using DIMMs that passed Memtest and the Apple hardware test CD. Tried the OEM 40GB IBM Drive and a Maxtor 120GB drive. Tried installing both 10.4 and 10.5 minimally (1.9GB for Tiger and 6GB for Leopard). Tried resetting the PRAM, VRAM and PMU. I was able to get Tiger installed once but got greedy and tried wiping/installing Leopard. Haven't been able to get anything on it since. Any ideas before I chuck this out the window? Oh and I tried restoring the installer DMGs to a separate partition and installing from that. DMG copies fine, restoration fails. Oh, and writing zeros to the disk craps out near the end of both hard drives. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Thanks for the reply BDAqua. Successfully wrote zeros to half the drive (20gigs) and tried installing Leopard. It got stuck at the extraction stage again. Trying to install Tiger right now. In the mean time..
    1) Assuming 10.4 installs, do you think it's safe to use the system like this? I actually just split the original partition in 2 so I've got the second drive still as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Would setting it as free space prevent the system from ever looking at that part of the drive?
    2) I was getting the error "Invalid memory access at %SRR0: 00034870.." with certain memory configurations when I was trying to boot into the AHT cd (meaning I wasn't able to boot into the CD, I didn't run tests on it). However, when I had Tiger working, the machine worked fully populated with RAM and System Profiler recognized all of it. Do you think I should only use RAM that I was able to boot into the AHT CD with or should I go ahead and fill up slots? (ie. could it just be a bug in the AHT CD?)
    Thanks again!

  • Power Mac G4 (sawtooth) AGP - Firmware and other issues

    Hello,
So I was given an older Power Mac G4 AGP which I've been using while my Power Book G4 gets a logic board replacement but I've been having some issues with the AGP unit. How do you check to see what version of the firmware you have? I read a firmware update but it requires OS 9 to launch and I don't know if I need this or not. The other issue has been when I tried to run Firefox after successfully installing it. Firefox doesn't launch, it just opens and then closes. When I use Safari, the browser will work for about a few minutes but then it will freeze and I need to force quit it. I am running 10.4.11 and I was thinking of installing 10.5.6 but I'm not sure if this is possible with the Sawtooth. Do I need to upgrade the processor? Any advice or help is appreciated.

    Hi, veesh678 -
Early models of the G4 (AGP) models came with OS 8.6; later models came with an installer for a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. The latter disk will have a blue-gray label, be named "Power Mac G4" with a subtitle "Software Install", and has a part number of 691-2657-A (the part number will be in fine print on the right-hand side of the label).
Non-current firmware will not preclude the machine from booting to that CD; a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD (white label, gold 9, no model named) probably will not work, although a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD should work fine.
The current firmware version for the G4 (AGP) model is v. 4.2.8, which can be downloaded from this article -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that to install that version the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive, and the firmware update must be run from the same hard drive.
Before installing firmware update v. 4.2.8, download and run DIMM First Aid (it's a free download) to verify the compliance of the RAM in the machine.

  • Power Mac G4 Won't startup and ejects boot disk.

    Hello,
Recently, I got a used Power Mac G4. On startup, it gets to the loading bar and doesn't load anything. It's just a blank white bar with no text aside from the apple logo at the top of the window. I tried inserting the Tiger recovery disk, but when I turn it on, it ejects the disk. I made sure that my keyboard and mouse were not plugged in as it was booting up (there are no other devices that may be causing it to eject), but it's still not solving the problem.
What could possibly be causing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Nami

It could easily be many things, Logic Board, RAM,Corrupted PRAM or NVRAM, even PSU or anything else, we just have don't have enough data out here to narrow it down yet.
I don't suppose it boots into Target mode...

EDIT: Sometimes even a flaky Optical Drive will prevent normal operation & needs to be disconnected.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & if weak can cause really strange problems...

    Hi GabreilKnight;
You are aware that the PowerMac G5 is no longer being produced hence if you find one it will be on the used market?
For what you are looking at doing I would suggest that you consider a Mac Pro instead.

I have a Power Mac G5 with an OS 10.4; what upgraces are available?

Leopard 10.5.8 is the last operating system a PowerPC Mac can be upgraded to.
    Everything else newer requires Intel.
The DVD for Leopard are getting expensive since Aple has stopped producing them.

  • 17" Mac book pro stops loading and freezes? Any suggestions?

When I turn on my 2006 macBook Pro 17" it starts through its booting regimen (or so it seems) then freezes after about 30 seconds. Any suggestions?
2.4 gig intel core 2 duo
    Memory 4 gigs
    Model identifier: MacBook pro 3.1

Thanks. But as i don't have space to keep a second fixed monitor and can't splash out on one either. Any other way.
Did want to use the thunder bolt connection but the iMac does not support it as its early 2009 model.

  • My late 2008 mac book pro runs slow and freezes

Hi, there! I have a late 2008 mac book pro and few months ago I upgraded the operating system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Since then my mac book often freezes, it is much slower than it was with Snow Leopard and the most annoying thing of all, is the almost inevidable freezing of the toolbar (where language selection, date, clock and other useful tools are located)
I was wondering if someone has experienced similar issues with his Mac Book Pro when upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion and if someone knows if and how this issue can be resolved?
    Thank you.

I have the same problem. Up until 2 days ago my MacBook Pro was running fine, then suddenly things started going wrong. I am using mac os x 10.6.7 as well. Does this have something to do with any firmware updates.
    Any help/ suggestions welcome.

  • AC1200 seems to overheat and shut down when transferring large data amounts

I have the AC1200 in an AC network.  While it is nice to have as a range extender, I bought it primarily to use as an AC bridge to two music servers that require ethernet connections.
Each night, i transfer data wirelessly from my desktop computer to one of the music servers that is connected to the AC1200.  I have noted that, if the data being transferred takes more than half an hour or so to stream, the AC1200 frequently drops off the network.  Then, when I go to restart it manually, I find that its case is very warm, sometimes almost too hot to touch.
The unit sits, exposed, on top of the cabinet in which the servers are located. Absolutely nothing impedes the flow of air from the top, bottom, or any side of the unit.
Doe ths unit run hot normally or does the transfer of "excessive" amounts of data cause it to overheat to the point it shuts itself down?  I was using firmware with a June 2014 date, but, just before writing this, updated to the latest version, from July 2014.  The unit is about two and a half months old.  Other than this issue, it seems to be okay for its intended use.
    Any thoughts?

I've had this problem off and on for the entire time I've owned the unit. I've spent hours and hours with tech support, both online chatting and on the phone. I did notice the unit was quite warm, but guess I thought that was somewhat normal and never mentioned it to tech support. Mostly the problem is that it drops the signal after 20 to 30 minutes when streaming movies or music. I think the unit is defective, but apparently can't get tech support to deem it so unless I spend even more time doing the same things over and over. (uninstall, reinstall, reset, rename and around and around we go.)
My 90-day warranty will expire in a couple days. Meantime, I just spent another 41 minutes talking to customer service this morning; they said that since I had to end the last chat session (after 2 hours) I still need to talk to tech support AGAIN and go through "troubleshooting" AGAIN until the tech deems it defective.
I am so fed up with this I could just scream.  I even paid for tech support at one point early on, because I gave up on this unit and reinstalled my old range extender. All I needed them to tell me was how to re-establish a network connection/internet access, and it cost me $30 to find out I had to remove my network before I could reconnect to it...a 1-minute operation. How much punishment should I take?

  • POWER MAC GOES CRAZY ON FONTS AND CRASHED THE ENTIRE HARD DRIVE

I was working on my mac, and my illustrator program crashed. When i relaunched my finder, the entire desktop
was changed with a garamon font and my dock was missing.
Each time I opened a app it crashed automaticly. I had no more drop down menus in my tool bar the whole computer was crazy.
So I decided to reinstal my Mac OS X instal discs.
The problem is, It's panter not Tiger. Anyways...I have Panter on my machine now which seems to work fine but I can't open Safari anymore. I bounces in my dock once and that's it it doesn't even open. Do you know why my computer went Crazy and how can I solve my safari problem.
P.S. I might find some other problems but I haven,t opened all my apps yet.

Christian, it sounds like an incompatible font. Also, please refrain from posting in all upper case letters since it is like yelling and considered rude on the internet. Thanks.
