Power Mac G5 Shuts Down When Waking From Sleep

I picked up a Power Mac G5 for a song at work. It had OS X Tiger 10.4.11, 1 GB RAM and 160 GB HDD, I've since upgraded the RAM to 2 GB, the HDD to 1 TB, and installed OS X Leopard 10.5 from an install disk I had bought when it first came out, and then upgraded to 10.5.8. It works and does what I want it to do.
It refuses to wake up from sleep since I first brought it home.
When it goes to sleep, the power light pulses like it should. However, when I move the mouse or press a key, it does a hard shutdown imediately. I've explored the suggestions here and searched on the internet for a solution.
Here is what I have done:
1.     Unplugged everything but the keyboard and monitor
2.     Replaced the keyboard with another white one that had never been used
3.     Replaced the battery on the Logic Board
4.     Pressed the SMC button on the Logic Board
5.     Did a PRAM reset
6.     Erased, partitioned the disk, and reinstalled Leopard from scratch
There are no extra programs loaded, only Leopard and the programs that came with it.
I've changed the Energy Saver Preference Pane to never sleep:
This is not going to kill me if the best option is to never sleep.

I had a similar sporadic problem with my G5 on a UPS which was failing. The surge on wake was enough to sag the power causing the PSU to kill the power supply. The UPS finally tanked and getting a new one cured the problem. You might see how it reacts on normal mains power as an experiment.
Also, never underestimate the capacity of a G5 power supply to accumulate dust, which reminds me that it is time I blew out my power supply dust, since it's been about a year since the last cleaning.

I just moved my G5 across Texas and now it shuts down when I use mouse to wake from sleep. Space bar will wake ok. Original power supply crashed and Apple replaced soon after I bought in "06. No other problems. It is connected to battery backup.

Mac Pro Clicks Off When Waking from Sleep

This is a recurring problem, that is all the more annoying for its lack of consistency. Occasionally when my Mac is sleeping it'll just "click" (it actually makes a clicking sound) and shut off immediately when I try to wake it. Pressing the power button does nothing.
After a lot of trial and error I've found that the best solution is to unplug the power cord and wait for maybe 15+ seconds. Then I plug it back in, press the power button and she starts up like nothing happened--as if we don't both know what happened.
I'm on a good streak now, and it hasn't happened for a while, but given my experiences with it, I can't really relax.
Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

Yep, power draw. How about this for a knee slapper:
I had my MacPro plugged in to the same socket as a moderatly
stuffed PeeCee and every time I woke up the MacPro the PeeCee
would click off. The PeeCee PSU wasn't getting enough juice
and just turned off.
Now I have a poor electrical system in the current house that
I'm in. I think the Main breaker is 15 amps and the two that
split off are 10 each. So I can't toast toast and nuke some
cold coffee at the same time that the 3 PCs and the 22" CRT
are on in a lit room without the main breaker tripping. But
without the toaster and nukrowave running the MacPro when
waking up harshly dims all the lights in the house for about
0.5 seconds.
If your Mac is asking for more than it's getting there might
be some smart circutry in the PSU (like there is in most nice
PeeCee PSUs) that turn it off before it causes any trouble.
Make sure it's that only thing plugged into the socket that
you're using for it and see if that doesn't solve it.

Power Mac G5 Kernel Panics After Waking From Sleep

My G5 has been kernel panicking intermittently the last few weeks. I brought it in to the Apple Store and they ran Apple System Diagnostics (ASD) on it, but found no errors. However, they were able to get it to kernel panic after running it on a full processor load for a couple hours.
After getting the machine back, it has been pretty stable, but it will kernel panic within a minute of waking it up from sleep. Therefore, I can't put the machine to sleep anymore. Once in awhile, it also kernel panics during the boot process.
A few times, including today, the memory also shows up incorrectly in the System Profiler. Right now, my G5 says only 3 GB of RAM are installed when there are actually 4 GB. The Profiler shows six 512 MB chips when there are actually four 512 MB chips and two 1 GB chips in the machine.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?

Thanks for the suggestion. I disconnected the MyBook drive from the Firewire 800 port, then put the G5 to sleep again. When I woke it from sleep, it ran almost five minutes, then kernel panicked.
So I did a test with half the RAM and had the same problem. Then I tested the other half of the RAM and the same kernel panics happened. I tried different DIMM slots and it kernel panicked no matter what I tried. The last few times, it just froze without displaying the kernel panic screen.
The kernel panics started happening when I installed the August security update. So I decided to install Leopard on a secondary internal drive. The installation went smoothly and I ran some programs for a new minutes with no external drive attached. Then I put the computer to sleep. When I woke it up about an hour later, the cursor was gone and the screen was frozen.
So I am pretty confused. The computer runs fine as long as I don't put it to sleep. But if I wake it up from sleep, it is a ticking time bomb before it crashes. Is there anything else I can try?

X230 shuts down when return from sleep mode

a week ago I am facing with a problem - I am entering the laptop in sleep mode, just closing the screen, and when I open the screen (expecting that the laptop should wake up) it starts usual OS boot from scratch, not hibernate.

I’m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 is restarting while you try to wake it up from sleep.
Go to control panel -> Power options -> Click on choose what closing the lid does (on the left side of the window) -> Select sleep -> OK.
If the above settings are as recommended, update your BIOS and Intel Management Engine firmware to the latest versions from Lenovo Support page. Enter your MTM number in the “Quick Path” and download the drivers.
Try reseating your memory. Try running the system with only one memory if you have multiple RAM in your system.

Brand new Mac mini ONLY displays when waking from sleep

Have an unusual problem.
Brand new 2011 Mac mini. Turn it on, and I do not get the grey Apple logo screen or normal spinning cog. Light comes on as normal, and chime chimes as normal. I've tried three different monitors now and I never get a display, unless I put the mini to sleep with the power button in back, then wake it with a keyboard key stroke, the display turns on and works as normal.
As of 20 Sep 2011, I've got all the software and EFI updates installed. I've also reset the PMU, SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM to no avail.

Yes, sure did. Tried different cables and Thunderbolt to video adapters. Don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using VGA. Originally tried it about a week ago with DVI and it worked ok. The problem is the monitor we're using in our classroom doesn't support DVI or HDMI.

Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?

I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

When waking from "sleep" screen turns grey under the pointer and the computer is effectively dead. Have to hold power 'off' for five seconds to regain computer.

When waking from "sleep" the screen appears normal but, the pointer leaves a trail of grey as it moves and the whole screen will turn grey if I keep moving the pointer. The computer is effectively dead. Have to shut down by using power off for six seconds and then re-starting. I know little about computers!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

New Mac Pro shuts down when I put it to sleep?

I go to click my mouse of keyboard and nothing happens. I click the power button the back lights up and turns on as if it were off, what gives? This is brand new 64gb ram, 12 core, didn't even do a migration so it's all new stuff on here.

It sounds like your computer is going to sleep but when you later go to wake it up it will not turn on unless you press the power button and it looks to have shutdown at some point. I recommend checking to see if the computer is scheduled to shutdown at a certain time with the following article:

IBook G4 temporarily unresponsive when waking from sleep on AC power

Hi,
I've noticed that my iBook G4 (late 2004) is temporarily unresponsive when waking from sleep, after having slept and been awoken on AC power (with the battery removed). The computer wakes up, but does not respond to trackpad or keyboard inputs for a non-trivial amount of time (30 seconds or so). There are no problems when sleeping and waking with the battery plugged in. I remove the battery to try to maintain it at a constant 40% load to conserve battery capacity. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.6.
Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this weird behaviour?

And yes... everything is normal at wake-up.
The only other thing I'll add is that the iBook battery replaces the traditional on-board battery found in all Macs used to retain several key settings when a system is unplugged. Things like system time for example. I can only venture a guess that some key setting is being recalculated on wake-up from a no-battery sleep, and the process that reads keyboard input is frozen until that setting is restored.

Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep

Hi everyone.
I just got a brand new Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz), and had Apple upgrade the RAM to 2GB (4 x 512MB). My first problem is that the computer always restarts when waking from sleep, which is annoying! I have reset the SMC by unplugging the machine for a minite, but the problem persists. I have also tried sleeping the computer with nothing plugged in except the monitor and keyboard/mouse, but I get the same problem. All software/firmware is fully up to date.
I have also just noticed that the System Profiler states that there is only 1GB RAM in the computer, even though I am sure that it recognised 2GB when I got the machine a fortnight ago (I even have a screen shot of 'about this mac' to prove it!). Can anybody help, or do I need to phone Apple support?

I have a similar problem - hard restart when closing the lid to put it to sleep. It looks like there is a bluetooth issue(?), but I'm not sure what to do with it. We don't have any blue tooth devices in our house. From the console log:

My MAC Pro shuts down when the battery still have 50 minutes life.

My MAC Pro shuts down when the battery still has 52 minutes life without any warning. Does anyone have this problem? BTW, it is less than one year old.

You must have a MacBookPro, right? MacPro's are big desktop models.

Missing sound + missing USB power (sometimes) from Thunderbolt Display when waking from sleep

Two problems - one of which is driving med crazy!!
Have the latest updates, and the display is connected to a MBA (mid 2011).
The two are almost alwayes connected, and every time I wake the MBA from sleep, the Thunderbold Display does not "support usb sound" - the sound options are only MBA and headphones. Only a restart will give me the option to use Thunderbolt as sound output: WHAT TO DO!?!?!!
Sometimes when waking from sleep the USB in the Display seems to be "off" - the will not charge my devices (iPhone, iPad etc.). Only reboot seems to fix this... I have seen this in other discussions but not found a permanent solution - any thoughts?

Same here but reinstalling OSX is a bit drastic. I solved the problem by deleting a preference.
Go to Macintosh HD then System then Library then Preference panes then Sound.prefPane
Delete Sound.prefPane (you need to type your password).
Logout or restart.
This has happend twice this week so WHY is this suddenly occurring?

I found this solution in the forum, but I can't find it again. I had cut and pasted it into a text file, because it solved my problem. I just don't want to take any credit for it. It did work for me. I had no problems for 3-4 weeks with the monitor, I have had the sound problem since last Friday. Very frustrating.

Trackpad Jerky or Unresponsive when waking from sleep

I've been having a problem with my trackpad being extremely jerky and unresponsive when it is waking up from sleep. I am a new mac user and I've only had my macbook pro since christmas and this problem is really getting annoying. Twice, I've had to just push the power button and press enter so my notebook would shut down and I could restart. Any Ideas?

First, when waking from sleep, MBP requires a little to get up to speed as it wakes if properly put to sleep. The MBP does hibernate and write to the hard disc when sleeping and this takes some time as does reading back. The book will be viewable immediately on waking but can seem laggard while fully getting up to speed from hibernation. Do not try to wake the computer until the little wake/sleep light has begun pulsing. Two, if you have a usb connection going or an expresscard inserted ... ensure that it lets the computer wake/sleep properly. Before sleeping the 'book, power off the connected items so that they do not interfere with the process.
What connections do you use? and what processes are going when you attempt to sleep the computer?
Use the Activity Monitor and the Console to check what is happening. Both the Console Log and the System Log in the console can provide you with info regarding your problems. Check the logs and post problematic entries here if you cannot interpret them yourself.

Detect display when waking from sleep?

Is there any way to force the display detection when waking from sleep? I find that if the mini wakes before the monitor is on, i get a blank screen. When the monitor is on before waking, everything is normal.
I have the DVI-Detective, and the problem is actually worse when using it -- nothing is detected when waking up, no matter if the display is on or not.
My specs:
OS 10.5
C2D, 2Ghz - 2GB RAM
Sharp Aquos 52inch
All standard HD resolutions work fine - it's just now a matter if figuring out how to force the mini to detect the display...

Great that you got it working. It seems what is happening when the TV is switched off is that the Mac can no longer see the EDID data. Basically, it's the same as if a hot-unplug event had occurred from OS X's perspective. The mini thinks the TV's video cable has been unplugged, so it thinks it is running headless, which of course it is not. And for some reason not completely clear to me, when the TV's power is restored, a hot-replug event is not triggered and the mini still thinks it's running headless. Maybe you are right that it is removed from the list of connected devices for good. But it isn't supposed to work like that.
The DVI Detective is the right tool for the job in cases like this, so it's good you have one and it's good you got it working. I agree it would be nice if there was more override control within OS X for times like this when things go wrong. But if more TV and 2nd/3rd tier monitor makers paid more attention to computer plug-and-play, then these things would work right in the first place. Your TV is in violation of the plug-and-play standard because the standard calls for the host (Mac mini in this case) to be able to power the ROM and I2C bus within the TV even if the TV is in a powered down state. Clearly your TV isn't doing this.
