Power Mac G5: Status light is solid but computer won't start

My Power Mac G5 was sleeping all day when the power went out. Since then the status light is solid when plugged in to the wall but nothing happens when I hold the power button down. I tried disconnecting the power cable and then plugging it back in but the status light comes just comes back on and the fan doesn't run. The computer is completely unresponsive. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi! Have you reset the smu? Some early G5's had the button on the motherboard and if not required to unplug everything and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. Tom

  • Grey and Blue screen but computer won't start up and I don't have a start up disc

    Help!
I cannot get my computer to start! Yesterday I was using powerpoint and the screen started to split in two and not repond. I turned off the computer and then grey apple screen on start up was striped, followed by a blank grey screen. After a minute the fan started to sound very loud but the computer would not start up. I did a safe reboot followed by resetting the PRAM and eventually the stripes dissappeared and it started normally.
Once it was turned on everything worked fine other than powerpoint. The split screen happened again when I tried to use power point, but it re-started normally and I forced power point to quit on re-start. It has worked all day without a problem.
This evening I left it open and the screen was black and unresponsive when I came back. I forced it to turn off but again I am faced with the stripey screen, then the grey screen of nothingness. A couple of times it's gone beyond that to a stripey blue screen.
I've tried re-setting PRAM, safe login in, and I've tried pressing command on start up to go in to the repair disc- it will let me pick the disc from the drop down menu but then goes no furhter than the grey screen.
My husband has lost my start up/ set up discs and it is nolonger in waranty. I also thought everything was backed up on Icloud but it doesn't seem to be there!
Is there anything I can do?! Please help!

    Spaniel-Rose,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from Apple or iFixit.

  • Power Mac G5 (OS X 10.4 I believe) won't start-up, goes to gray screen with ? in a folder.... ideas??

I moved a bunch of music from my external hard drive to my Mac's hard drive, I practically filled up the hard drive on the Mac. Then my Firefox crashed so I shut the computer down. When I try to restart It stops at a gray screen with a folder in the middle. The folder alternates between having a "?" in it and the "Finder" picture.
I read this link http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1440 but it doesn't help. I can't select a drive or anything because I'm just stuck at this gray screen. Is there a way to boot this up in "safe mode" or something so I can do something to it? I am worried that some of the music I moved from my external hard drive had a virus or something and it killed my computer.
I got this Mac 2nd hand so I don't have a manual or any startup disks or anything..... What do I do????

    Yikes, no startup Disc!
You don't want to have less the 10-20 GBG free space on your boot drive, OSX will be slow and/or start trashing files/data due to corruption.
Reboot, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when complete.
    If that doesn't work...
Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

  • G62-229WM - Battery charges but computer won't start/run on AC power.

I've got an HP G62-229WM, running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit, that will only run on battery power.   With a full, or even partially, charged battery and the AC adapter not plugged in, the computer starts and runs just fine.  The little power icon down in the screens taskbar area shows the normal battery only icon and indicates the correct % of charge.
When I plug in the AC adapter (original HP 18.5V 65 watt adapter that came with the unit) the AC adapter light LED (located next to the AC adapter plug-in port) turns white momentarily and then turns amber, which indicates that the battery is charging.   This is supposedly normal.
When the battery reaches 100% charge, the indicator light turns white again, and remains a steady white, which means that the computer is connected to external power, but the power icon in the taskbar area still shows just the battery only icon and not the battery/plug icon.  The operating system does not recognize that the computer is connected to external power and thinks that it is running on battery power only.
If I shut down, remove the battery and plug in only the AC adapter and press the power button, nothing happens.   No lights, no fan, no disk spinning, nothing.   The AC adapter seems to charge the battery just fine (and the computer runs fine on the charged battery) but the adapter will not start or run the computer by itself.
I first noticed this problem a couple of days ago when I was on the System Properties page and it said that the "Windows Experience Index" was 6.1 but that the rating needed to be re-assessed.   When I tried to rerun the assessment, it stated that the assessment could not be run on battery power only and that I needed to connect to external power.  Of course, the computer was plugged into AC power at the time which first alerted me to this problem.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
I see that a full charge results in only 51% of the battery capacity.  Your battery is going south. It would be great if you happen to know someone with an HP power adapter like yours to plug in to your noetbook. The AC adapter output is within 10% of 18.5 volts so it is OK. I suspect a charging and power management control chip failure on the system board is causing the issue.
    Best regards,

  • Charger light blinking orange and computer won't start up

My charger on my computer broke a couple days ago so I ordered a new one. While waiting for the battery to come in the mail, the battery on my computer went dead. Now I have the new charger and when I plug it into the computer it blinks orange but never gets a solid orange. Also, the computer will not fire up. Years ago I drained my battery dead and it took a little while charging before it fired back up. I'm hoping its the same problem but it has been over a hour now and still nothing. Anyone have any advise? Thanks

I just came back from the Apple Store.  They think that the Logic Board is the issue and possibly other issues (They didn't say what).
Below is a chart of what they will charge me to fix it.  This includes any defective parts, a 90 day warranty and re-imaging the machine I am told.  This is far less expensive than I can do it myself for.  I can't even find a logic board that is in stock for less than $449.
I will update you if this changes.  I strongly encourage you to goto your local Apple Store and work with them and most of all be polite.

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...
G5 PCIe options are listed here:

I did a factory reset on my late 2008 MacBook from a Snow Leopard disc. It installed fine, but as soon as I began to use the computer (safari) it froze. Couldn't even force quit. So I held down the power button to turn it off, and now it won't start up. It goes to the grey Apple screen and just sits there loud as can be. Help! Please keep in mind I've not done anything like this before and am going to need a little hand-holding. Thanks in advance.

Hi. Don't worry it's nothing serious. Insert the Instal Disc (Snow Leopard) and press the C button while turning on the computer. Once you see the desktop, go to Utility and choose Disk Utility. Select the Macintosh Partition on the left window pane and then click on Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the bottom right corner. Wait for both processes to finish. Click on the Apple icon (top left corner) and choose quit. Your computer should restart. See if it reboots normally. If not you can always reinstall the OS following the same steps. Good luck!

If you hit the delete key you will be asked to confirm you want to delete the photo(s) from the catalog.
To delete an item right-click (or hold two fingers on the track pad) on the green album icon under the thumbnail and choose remove from album.
You can also select a batch of thumbnails in an album and click on a green icon to remove them all from the album.
If you cant see the green album icons, move the zoom slider slightly to the right to make the thumbnails bigger.
Try again from the Organizer with your 600D. After launching the Organizer app press Cmd+G for the downloader. Connect your camera and try refresh from the top pull down menu or try browsing for your device.
If it is still not working copy your files from the storage card to a folder in Pictures. Then use the menu:
File >> Get Photos & Videos >> From Files & Folders

Have you tried a soft-reset : Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should reappear and it will hopefully reboot.

    Hey harikrishnandhk,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issue with your iPhone 3GS. You are definitely taking the correct steps, as you'll want to restore the iPhone in recovery mode. For information on doing so, see this article:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • HELP! Battery drained and now, even with a power plug, computer won't start

My battery drained completely...and I went to charge it. When I plug the power cord in, it shows "green" not "red." When I remove the battery and just plug in the power cord, the computer won't start either.
Anyone encounter this before after a full battery drain? It's very odd.

I had the same green light non-charging problem. Turns out, I had to replace my wall adaptor. A dealer will have a good power supply you can try.

  • Computer won't start after power outage

After a circuit breaker was shut off the computer won't start. I cleaned out the computer and got the light to go green by putting a hair dryer to it.
When I push start button and hold it up to 10 seconds it will not start.
The computer is a compaq presario sr5130nx

Typically what happens during a power outage is not good.  It can do strange things.  If it took using a hair dryer to get the green light on the back to come on, that is a bad sign.  HERE is a troubleshooting guide for power supplies.  Start with that.
