Power Mac G5 wont boot.

Hey everyone!
This is my first time posting here, but I get all my technical problems solved here, so thank you to everyone!
Anyway, getting on to my problem (which I cannot find a answer to)
My Power Mac decided the other day it wasnt going to boot up. All that would happen when I pressed the power button would be the red light (on the logic board) would flash while I can the button pressed it, I would hear 2 clicks like a relay, and that was it. Nothing, it would never boot.
So I switched the computer off at the wall, left it for 2/3 minutes, and all was fine, would boot and restart. But, if I shut down the computer, I would not be able to get it to turn back on, unless I switched it off at the wall again.
I do know that turning it off at the wall resets the SMU? So would there be a problem with my SMU or something? No idea if that is even possible!!
Can anyone shed some light on the problem? Just to let you know the computer was never droppped/banged/hit etc etc. I was on it, turn it off to pop out for a hour, came back and its been like that ever since
Any help will be much appriciated!
James

Hi James, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not sure which Mac it is you have with the l essuseful new forums, but it sounds like the classic case of either a bad/low,/dead PRAM battery, or a leaking Capacitor.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & if weak can cause really strange problems...
See which one your Mac has...

  • Power Mac G5 wont boot past the Apple Logo

    Mac: Power Mac G5 2.7Ghz DP w/ 4gb RAM (2x1gb, 4x512mb), Leopard
Last week, I formated this computer and reinstalled OS X 10.5. I updated everything, reinstalled all my applications and replaced my documents. Everything was good for a couple days. I have and HP 1350 all-in-one printer (which HP no long has mac support for that model, so I can only use the scanner as a photocopier, but that's not the issue, it prints fine and I have printed files since the formatting) The printer is connect via USB to my Power Mac and then shared on my home network, wirelessly, with 2 other MacBooks and a 27" iMac. My roommate was trying to print something from his MacBook. In the printer queue on the MacBook, the file would say it was printing, but nothing would actually printer. When I went to the printer settings on the Power Mac, the dialog box said the printer was "in use." I reset the printer, nothing happened. I restarted the Power Mac, properly, and now the computer wont boot past the Apple logo. The spinning gear appears and spins for a minute or 2 and then it will just reboot on its own. It will just keep doing this in a continuous loop.
I've tried to boot into safe mode (holding shift) but it still does the same thing.
I manage to get the CD drive open by booting into open Firmware. I restarted the computer and was able to boot from the Leopard disc. I ran disk utility, and repaired the drive and the permission but everything was ok.
I've unplugged any USB device connect but to no avail.
I really don't want to reinstall Leopard again. it took almost 8 hours to install all the applications (such as Logic, Komplete 5, etc) and I had not setup time machine. There are some document files that I would prefer not to loose, but could deal with the loss.
    any suggestions?

Ok, so I reinstalled Leopard, all my documents were in the "Previous Systems" folder, and the applications where present. I went to Software Updates to download all the need updates, which included 10.5.8, itunes, security fixes, etc. It notified my that I would have to restart. I click ok, everything was logged out and the updates started installing. As the computer restarted itself after the updates, i had the same issue again, where it would go to the Apple logo and then restart itself. The second time around, it just froze and the warning "You need to restart your computer" with the power logo in the background came up. So I manually restarted my computer and everything logged in correctly. I restarted it a couple time to see if I could duplicate the errors but everything keeps working properly. Now I'm kind of scare to restart my computer.
Any suggestions as to why this would be happening? Is this most likely a software issue or a hardware issue? This never happened before I formatted last week. The last time I formatted the computer prior to that was less than a year ago.

  • Power mac g5 wont boot from install dvd

i have a g5 power mac i had to replace the hard drive when i try to boot from the disc it freezes on the gray screen with the apple im use the retail dvd for the ppc can anyone help

Hello! You may not be waiting long enough if there's been a new drive installed as the OS on the dvd will be looking at the new drive to see if it's been formatted. It may take 10-15 minutes or longer to fully boot from the install disc. Tom

  • Power Mac G4 Wont boot in Mac Os X 10.3.9

My mac won't boot in mac os x 10.3.9 it gets almost to the login screen then goes blue. I can't insert a disk because the optical drive is broken. I have an external drive but when i boot a disk it has the os X spin wheel but it has a picture of a folder ripped in half. The computer boots in System 9.2 fine but won't boot in 10.3.9.

Sounds like you have a PowerBook, not a desktop machine. You've landed in the PowerMac G4 forums for late-model desktop machines like the picture under my name at the left. The G4 PowerBooks have separate forum areas, broken down by model and screen size. Find your specific version and follow one of these links:

    Hello,
You cannot install to the G5 from the MacBook.
Is the Leopard Install Disc the Retail version, or the Grey Disc that came with another Mac ?

  • Intel mac mini wont boot after system restore

    Hi,
I ran the system restore on my intel mac mini using the genuine leopard cd that came with it.
Now it wont boot. When you press power the light comes on but it does not chime and there is not video output to any monitor.
Anyone know what could be wrong?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You picked 10.4.1 in your profile.
Intel Mac Minis at minimum came with 10.4.4.
If it came with a 10.5 genuine DVD, it most certainly was not running 10.4.1 or 10.4.4. Perhaps you mistook one Mac Mini install DVD for another? Does your Mac Mini have 4 USB ports on back? What does the 10.5 installer disc you used look like?

  • My Power Mac G5 Wont Install OS X 10.5 Leopard

    Hey Guys,
I have a Power Mac G5 that wont install leopard. When I put in the Leopard disk, it boots the install, then says OS X 10.5 can not be installed on this machine.
I tried Leopard assist, but that told me it would not let me use it, becuse Leopard should be able to install on this machine.
    Any ideas
    Thanks

The retail Leopard install DVD looks like this:

  • Power mac G5 wont recognise external hard drives

running a friends power mac g5 using tiger 10.4.6 since the upgrade firewire hard drives arent visible. have tried three different hard drives using differenty ports and different cables. drives will power up but wont appear in the finder. any suggestions??

Yes, visit the drive makers sites for any driver software updates and run it.
Also it's not advised to upgrade Tiger over Panther, but to do a fresh install of Tiger and iLife '06 from scratch on a Erased w/Zero option hard drive.
Use Software Update download then run option/combo update until your up to 10.4.6.
Then avoid Migration Assistant and do fresh installs of all your Tiger ready applications from original sources, files from backup.
Then clone that boot drive to a external for safe keeping, learn how by visiting Carbon Copy Cloner's free advice forums and donationware software.

  • Power Mac G4 cannot boot from CD

    Hi there,
First, I'm sorry that question has already been asked
I am new to this forum and also new to Mac world! Soo exited!!
I have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver. My problem is I cannot make it boot from the CD no matter what I do. Press the C key, no luck. Press the Option key, no drives showing. The HDD is Mac formatted but it cannot been detected. Any help will be appreciated.
PS: Same thing is happening on my iMac G3.
    My best regards.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Also depending on the age of the QuickSilver, some were less than 867 Mhz, which meant they couldn't take 10.5, and could only take 10.4.6 retail or earlier.
Also if the clock battery hasn't been replaced in more than 4 years, it can affect booting as well.
The iMac G3 Firewire models can only take up to 10.4.6 retail, and not 10.5 or later. Furthermore, some did not come with a DVD drive, and needed an external Firewire DVD drive to load 10.4.0 or later retail. The iMac G3s without Firewire can only take up to 10.3.5 retail.
10.5.6 retail can be updated to 10.5.8 via Apple's support website.
10.4.6 retail can be updated to 10.4.11 via Apple's support website.
10.3.5 retail can be updated to 10.3.9 via Apple's support website.
So the first question, identify your iMac G3, and identify your QuickSilver's age:

  • Power mac will not boot up

    Hello and Good Afternoon,
My school was throwing out Power Mac's so a few students and myself got one as a project to work with. Was able to create a new admin accnt and once i did that i went to erase the hard drive so i can start all from scratch i didnt want any remnants of the school or its configurations on it. it was running OS X Server 10.6, so after the erasing process was done the system powered down and never turn back on. i thought that was odd so i press the power button it came on and it stays on grey screen/apple logo screen and the fans in the unit started to escalate very loud. so i held down the power button and it powered down and i researched the booting commands such as Command-Option-O-F, C, Option, Command R, Command S, Option-Command-P-R i tried so many and all they do is open the cd/dvd drive so i called apple and purchased a OS X Snow Leopard DVD i put it in the drive when it open with each command and same thing happens as i said above. i would like to master this issue but i cant afford to call apple at $49.99 a call for assistance. I would realy appreciate this help and assistance thank you...
    Thank You,
    Myke

    Hi Myke,
Have you tried holding c key at bootup with the 10.6 Install Disc inserted?
Oh, how did you erase the drive to start with?
BTW, PowerMacs can't run anything higher than 10.5.8, so could this be a Mac Pro?
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

  • Can the new Power Mac (late 2013) boot up in OS X 10.6.7?

I am planning on buying the new "trashcan" Power Mac but I'm wondering if that machine will boot up from an external drive running OS X 10.6.7?  Although I currently use the most up to date operating system (10.9.1) I have some older software that I need to use, from time to time, like Mac The Ripper, Appleworks, some old 80s video games, etc. and I sure appreciate being able to boot up in the old operating system to use that software.  I'd hate to lose the ability to do that.  Anybody?
    Mmyers6167

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295#ROSETTALION
is a tip that may help in your migration, as 10.6 server will still work with Rosetta and old Mac OS X PowerPC software that doesn't require special drivers and will hopefully work with the Mac Pro in question.   I would enquire in the Mac Pro forum to see if anyone has tried it on the new Mac Pro.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
will help in the overall migration.
If you can't get confirmation that 10.6 server works on the new Mac Pro, getting a pre-July 20, 2011 Mac Pro is probably a better idea, as then you can at least ask AppleCare for the original discs of 10.6 to run on the Mac Pro.  If it is pre-August 28, 2009, any retail installer of 10.6 will work.

  • My Power Mac G5 wont always turn on

A couple of weeks ago my G5 started not turning on after being shut completely down. When I hit the power button, it clicks twice and turns off in a split second. The odd part is, it WILL turn on if I leave it unplugged for at least 24 hours. When it does boot, it works normally and can be restarted without a problem. Im certain it isnt the power supply because I tested the pinouts based on a service source I found, but I really want to find out what is causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Specs:
    Power Mac G5 (late 2005)
    2GB of Ram
    Dual 2.0 PPC

Yeah, most Apple stores I hear don't even work on G5s anymore, even for ridiculous prices.
I suspect a bad capacitor on the logic board needing to bleed down, but any PCI cards, USB, or FW devies connected?
    Or possibly the PMU itself.
Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMD+Option+o+f ?
