Power Mac g5 wont install Leopard

i had gotten the computer used amd im locked out of it because i dont have the password.
I put the leopard disk into the computer and restart it while holding c. the computer will start up then go to a blank grey screen and will not go any further. i tried holding the alt option key and clicking on the install disk but i end up on the same screen.. why is this happening? howdo i install leopard on to the computer?

Where did you get the Leopard DVD? Does it have a gray label? If so it's an OEM disc that may be for another model, and it will not work on the one you have. Or it's possible the disc itself is damaged or defective or the optical drive is not functioning properly. And you can't dismiss the possibility the computer has a hardware problem or lacks the minimal RAM required for Leopard - 5121 MBs.

I tried Leopard assist, but that told me it would not let me use it, becuse Leopard should be able to install on this machine.
    Any ideas
    Thanks

  • Power Mac G5 wont install 10.5 on new hard drive

I recently got a Pmac g5 from my uncle. His hard drive died and he had no further use for it. I bought a new drive and have a disk for Leopard, but when I try to load from the disk it doesnt seem to work. it just defaults back to the ? folder. The disk works because it loads fine on my G3 iMac, and I dont know how to check to see if the hard drive is recognized (250 GB Maxor formatted for this computer). I've reset PRAM and all that stuff, but with no luck. Any help as to why it wont work?

Well Option Boot won't see the Hard Drive ubtil we fornat it HFS+, but whyit isn't seeing the Install Disc is our problem.
    Does the G3 iMac haveFirewire?
If so wee could use the G3's Optical drive with the G3 in Target Mode, & Option Boot the G5.

    Hello,
You cannot install to the G5 from the MacBook.
Is the Leopard Install Disc the Retail version, or the Grey Disc that came with another Mac ?

i have a g5 power mac i had to replace the hard drive when i try to boot from the disc it freezes on the gray screen with the apple im use the retail dvd for the ppc can anyone help

Hello! You may not be waiting long enough if there's been a new drive installed as the OS on the dvd will be looking at the new drive to see if it's been formatted. It may take 10-15 minutes or longer to fully boot from the install disc. Tom

  • Power Mac G5 wont boot past the Apple Logo

    Mac: Power Mac G5 2.7Ghz DP w/ 4gb RAM (2x1gb, 4x512mb), Leopard
Last week, I formated this computer and reinstalled OS X 10.5. I updated everything, reinstalled all my applications and replaced my documents. Everything was good for a couple days. I have and HP 1350 all-in-one printer (which HP no long has mac support for that model, so I can only use the scanner as a photocopier, but that's not the issue, it prints fine and I have printed files since the formatting) The printer is connect via USB to my Power Mac and then shared on my home network, wirelessly, with 2 other MacBooks and a 27" iMac. My roommate was trying to print something from his MacBook. In the printer queue on the MacBook, the file would say it was printing, but nothing would actually printer. When I went to the printer settings on the Power Mac, the dialog box said the printer was "in use." I reset the printer, nothing happened. I restarted the Power Mac, properly, and now the computer wont boot past the Apple logo. The spinning gear appears and spins for a minute or 2 and then it will just reboot on its own. It will just keep doing this in a continuous loop.
I've tried to boot into safe mode (holding shift) but it still does the same thing.
I manage to get the CD drive open by booting into open Firmware. I restarted the computer and was able to boot from the Leopard disc. I ran disk utility, and repaired the drive and the permission but everything was ok.
I've unplugged any USB device connect but to no avail.
I really don't want to reinstall Leopard again. it took almost 8 hours to install all the applications (such as Logic, Komplete 5, etc) and I had not setup time machine. There are some document files that I would prefer not to loose, but could deal with the loss.
    any suggestions?

Ok, so I reinstalled Leopard, all my documents were in the "Previous Systems" folder, and the applications where present. I went to Software Updates to download all the need updates, which included 10.5.8, itunes, security fixes, etc. It notified my that I would have to restart. I click ok, everything was logged out and the updates started installing. As the computer restarted itself after the updates, i had the same issue again, where it would go to the Apple logo and then restart itself. The second time around, it just froze and the warning "You need to restart your computer" with the power logo in the background came up. So I manually restarted my computer and everything logged in correctly. I restarted it a couple time to see if I could duplicate the errors but everything keeps working properly. Now I'm kind of scare to restart my computer.
Any suggestions as to why this would be happening? Is this most likely a software issue or a hardware issue? This never happened before I formatted last week. The last time I formatted the computer prior to that was less than a year ago.

  • Upgrade Power Mac G5 Quad to Leopard

Hi, we have a Power Mac G5 M9592LL/A with Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S165) and I would like to install Leopard 10.5.8.
Where can I buy this upgrade?

Look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

  • Power mac G5 wont recognise external hard drives

running a friends power mac g5 using tiger 10.4.6 since the upgrade firewire hard drives arent visible. have tried three different hard drives using differenty ports and different cables. drives will power up but wont appear in the finder. any suggestions??

Yes, visit the drive makers sites for any driver software updates and run it.
Also it's not advised to upgrade Tiger over Panther, but to do a fresh install of Tiger and iLife '06 from scratch on a Erased w/Zero option hard drive.
Use Software Update download then run option/combo update until your up to 10.4.6.
Then avoid Migration Assistant and do fresh installs of all your Tiger ready applications from original sources, files from backup.
Then clone that boot drive to a external for safe keeping, learn how by visiting Carbon Copy Cloner's free advice forums and donationware software.

  • Power Mac G4 can install OS 10.3.5 ?

My Power Mac G4 original OS is 10.1.2, can I upgrade it to OS 10.3.5 ?

Identify which PowerMac G4 you have here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
Then if necessary, boot into Mac OS 9 via Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk and run the firmware update for the appropriate PowerMac G4 here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Once the firmware is updated, backup your data as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And then you may be able to Archive and Install the retail version of 10.3 or 10.4. See these precautions before upgrading that I've written:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
The Archive and Install procedure is here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 for 10.3
    and here for 10.4:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
Not everyone has succeeded archiving and installing from Puma (10.1) to Panther (10.3), or Jaguar (10.2) to Tiger (10.4), but it may be possible to do a two version upgrade with Archive and Install assuming your system is properly setup according to my upgrade FAQ. I've not done it myself. In the worst case scenario you may have to erase and install, and restore from your backup with the migration/setup assistant.

  • How many Macs can I install Leopard on?

    Hi,
Quick question: I'd like to install Leopard both on an external HD (to test it) and then on my PowerBook. I'd also like to put it on my wife's PB.
Do I have to find the Family Pack or is one all I need?
    Thanks!

    hi,
the standard version of Leopard could only be install on one computer at a time. so if you want to be legit and intall it on your wife's PB, you should consider the family pack.
beside, I think you are correct to have the standard version install on your PB and on an external HD for testing or backup purpose since you couldn't run these two copies at the same time with your PB.

  • Power Mac G5 wont boot.

    Hey everyone!
This is my first time posting here, but I get all my technical problems solved here, so thank you to everyone!
Anyway, getting on to my problem (which I cannot find a answer to)
My Power Mac decided the other day it wasnt going to boot up. All that would happen when I pressed the power button would be the red light (on the logic board) would flash while I can the button pressed it, I would hear 2 clicks like a relay, and that was it. Nothing, it would never boot.
So I switched the computer off at the wall, left it for 2/3 minutes, and all was fine, would boot and restart. But, if I shut down the computer, I would not be able to get it to turn back on, unless I switched it off at the wall again.
I do know that turning it off at the wall resets the SMU? So would there be a problem with my SMU or something? No idea if that is even possible!!
Can anyone shed some light on the problem? Just to let you know the computer was never droppped/banged/hit etc etc. I was on it, turn it off to pop out for a hour, came back and its been like that ever since
Any help will be much appriciated!
    James

Hi James, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not sure which Mac it is you have with the l essuseful new forums, but it sounds like the classic case of either a bad/low,/dead PRAM battery, or a leaking Capacitor.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & if weak can cause really strange problems...
See which one your Mac has...

  • My Power Mac G5 wont always turn on

A couple of weeks ago my G5 started not turning on after being shut completely down. When I hit the power button, it clicks twice and turns off in a split second. The odd part is, it WILL turn on if I leave it unplugged for at least 24 hours. When it does boot, it works normally and can be restarted without a problem. Im certain it isnt the power supply because I tested the pinouts based on a service source I found, but I really want to find out what is causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Specs:
    Power Mac G5 (late 2005)
    2GB of Ram
    Dual 2.0 PPC

Yeah, most Apple stores I hear don't even work on G5s anymore, even for ridiculous prices.
I suspect a bad capacitor on the logic board needing to bleed down, but any PCI cards, USB, or FW devies connected?
    Or possibly the PMU itself.
Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMD+Option+o+f ?
