Power Mac Wont StartUp

My Power Mac just decided not to start up this morning, I have checked the power cords, its working fine, the power outlet its working fine, Is there a way i can check to see if there is Power getting to the board

If by "not to start up" you mean no response at all to the power button, then you need to first check power supply response. With the power cord plugged into the wall, disconnect it from the computer. Reconnect it to the computer. You should hear a small click coming from the power supply on each event. This would be the standby circuits energizing in the power supply.
If you hear the click, then next clue is whether you get the white LED to light when pressing the power button.
It would also help if you provide more specific model information, as there are five major "waves" of Power Mac G5 machines. Find the serial number on the build label and use this site to get that information: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
The build label is found by removing the side panel and looking just below where the processor(s) sit.

2- Checked your panic log? You can check the kernel panic log any time that you must force restart your computer, using either the power button, interrupt button, or the Control-Command-power key combination. The kernel panic text is added to the log the next time you restart the computer, assuming that you have not reset PRAM at the same time (the kernel panic text is stored in PRAM until you restart). The file is named "panic.log", and it is located on your startup disk at: /Library/Logs/.
The panic report is also the "script" that is displayed when the "restart your computer" message appears. A copy of the report would help.
3- Tried a "safe boot"? Hold down the "shift" key when starting.

Power mac G4 - Startup hangs at gray screen

I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model. 512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook proI can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Reset PRAM
Started computer in single-user modeused fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
Started computer in verbose modestartup seems to hang when this appears:

As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.
It could be the User's files or login messed up, if you want to try something a little more desperate...

Except you could just use Target mode and move or rename that file.

Please Help - Power Mac G4 Startup/Application Issues

My Dad was using Adobe Illustrator CS2 on his Power Mac G4. He is running 10.3.9. He went to change a font in the font menu, everything froze, and the beach ball started spinning. He force quit Illustrator, reopened it, and the same thing happened. He tried restarting the computer, and it wouldn't power up. There was no chime, just a fan noise. Finally, it turned on, but no applications work correctly. As soon as we open any program, it freezes and the beach ball starts spinning. Does anyone know what we can do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is his business computer and he needs it for his work.

ok I just bought my very 1st first mac last month its a power Mac G4 When I put it into sleep mode i had a black out about an hour later when i tried to start it up I got a gray screen with the apple symbol and the and the scroll symbol hanging I was able to get to the Dos command single user screen and it says this

Oh boy, you're up a creek without the Install Disks, in fact legally speaking, the License to use OSX goes with the Install disc, they should've included it!
Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup. Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(space between fsck and -fy important)
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. G5 Power Mac Wont Boot

Hello, all.
I'm trying to fix a G5 tower, power pc with issues booting. The owner was browsing a large folder of images when, suddenly, the pinwheel of death began spinning without end. He had to reboot the system. When he now boots the system, there is the white/grey screen with the apple logo and the fans go on overdrive after several minutes of idling on the screen.
When we booted from our 10.4 disk, we could not repair or verify our hard disk. It said that the disk could not unmount. We even installed a brand new hard drive, but we couldn't install 10.4 on it. We even tried to verify the new drive after the failed installation and we got the same "unmount" error.
I'm not sure what to do. I've searched and browsed other posts, but I can't seem to find any similar issues. Perhaps someone can help?

Hi Jeremy, did you pull the old Drive when trying to Install to the new one?
If you have anther Mac With Firewire, you might try putting the G5 into FireWire target disk mode...

Power Mac G4 Won't startup and ejects boot disk.

Hello,
Recently, I got a used Power Mac G4. On startup, it gets to the loading bar and doesn't load anything. It's just a blank white bar with no text aside from the apple logo at the top of the window. I tried inserting the Tiger recovery disk, but when I turn it on, it ejects the disk. I made sure that my keyboard and mouse were not plugged in as it was booting up (there are no other devices that may be causing it to eject), but it's still not solving the problem.
What could possibly be causing this problem?

It could easily be many things, Logic Board, RAM,Corrupted PRAM or NVRAM, even PSU or anything else, we just have don't have enough data out here to narrow it down yet.

EDIT: Sometimes even a flaky Optical Drive will prevent normal operation & needs to be disconnected.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & if weak can cause really strange problems...

Power Mac G4 400 Startup Problem

Working on my brother's system. He ran software update and rebooted and now we get the grey screen with the apple logo and the counter icon, then the starting Mac OS X screen, the progress bar gets to about the half way point then the screen alternates between being totally blue and briefly flashing the round counter icon.
I've tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM, booting to OS boot DVD and running Disk Utility - nothing has worked. Although it did boot to the DVD with no problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom, welcome, it is always a good idea to Repair Permissions before and after updates.
Bootup from the install CD (C key held down) and once the disk mounts (X window) open Disk Utility from the Main Menu under Installer. Choose your drive in the left column then select First Aid, now run the Repair, if it does not repair run it again. Now select the startup volume (with the OS) and run the Repair Permissions, quit Disk Utility.
Now go back up to the Main Menu under Install/Change Startup Disk and select your startup volume then Restart.

Power mac G5 dual, startup and fan problem

Dear macpeople,
I have a Power mac G5 dual, 1.8 ghz, ramm 4.5GB. I guess from 2004. Only added more Ram three years ago. Never had any serious problem till a week ago. I have read a lot of similar questions and responses on my problem in this forum but till so far i have not been able to solve it.
Since a couple of weeks my mac sometimes did,nt recover from sleep. Starting up gave me some trouble because the fans were racing like **** and i had to restart several times to be able to boot normally. In the beginning just the upper fan next to de CD player ran fast and loud but now all of them get crazy at start up. Very rare times G5 is able to recover this (fans slowing down) and boot up, but this only in the safe mode.
I have cleaned the mac
i have resetted PRAM
i have used utility disk, all ok
i have unplugged for 40 min, reset in the machine, safe start up.
Checked memory
The only way to boot is in the safe mode. The fans start blowing fast but after 4 min. they slow down then the blue screen appears and mac builds up normally. But when i leave it for more than 1 hour in the sleep mode it will not recover, although i hear the normal sound of awaking/ accelerating disc. The screen keeps black and after a few minutes fans start blowing at full speed. Pushing 4 sec. the on/off button pulls it off.
I hope that someone can help me to solve this problem (me not being a tecnician at all) or that someone can give me a kind of diagnostic so that i can check the costs of profesional reparation. And start saving money for a new machine.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Power Mac G5 wont boot past the Apple Logo

Mac: Power Mac G5 2.7Ghz DP w/ 4gb RAM (2x1gb, 4x512mb), Leopard
Last week, I formated this computer and reinstalled OS X 10.5. I updated everything, reinstalled all my applications and replaced my documents. Everything was good for a couple days. I have and HP 1350 all-in-one printer (which HP no long has mac support for that model, so I can only use the scanner as a photocopier, but that's not the issue, it prints fine and I have printed files since the formatting) The printer is connect via USB to my Power Mac and then shared on my home network, wirelessly, with 2 other MacBooks and a 27" iMac. My roommate was trying to print something from his MacBook. In the printer queue on the MacBook, the file would say it was printing, but nothing would actually printer. When I went to the printer settings on the Power Mac, the dialog box said the printer was "in use." I reset the printer, nothing happened. I restarted the Power Mac, properly, and now the computer wont boot past the Apple logo. The spinning gear appears and spins for a minute or 2 and then it will just reboot on its own. It will just keep doing this in a continuous loop.
I've tried to boot into safe mode (holding shift) but it still does the same thing.
I manage to get the CD drive open by booting into open Firmware. I restarted the computer and was able to boot from the Leopard disc. I ran disk utility, and repaired the drive and the permission but everything was ok.
I've unplugged any USB device connect but to no avail.
I really don't want to reinstall Leopard again. it took almost 8 hours to install all the applications (such as Logic, Komplete 5, etc) and I had not setup time machine. There are some document files that I would prefer not to loose, but could deal with the loss.
any suggestions?

Ok, so I reinstalled Leopard, all my documents were in the "Previous Systems" folder, and the applications where present. I went to Software Updates to download all the need updates, which included 10.5.8, itunes, security fixes, etc. It notified my that I would have to restart. I click ok, everything was logged out and the updates started installing. As the computer restarted itself after the updates, i had the same issue again, where it would go to the Apple logo and then restart itself. The second time around, it just froze and the warning "You need to restart your computer" with the power logo in the background came up. So I manually restarted my computer and everything logged in correctly. I restarted it a couple time to see if I could duplicate the errors but everything keeps working properly. Now I'm kind of scare to restart my computer.
Any suggestions as to why this would be happening? Is this most likely a software issue or a hardware issue? This never happened before I formatted last week. The last time I formatted the computer prior to that was less than a year ago.

Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.

My Power Mac G5 Wont Install OS X 10.5 Leopard

I have a Power Mac G5 that wont install leopard. When I put in the Leopard disk, it boots the install, then says OS X 10.5 can not be installed on this machine.
I tried Leopard assist, but that told me it would not let me use it, becuse Leopard should be able to install on this machine.

Power Mac G4 won't startup from OS X install disc

I have a Power Mac G4 that needs to have the Classic environment on it. I've done some checking and apparently this isn't possible with 10.4, so I'm trying to install an old version of teh OS. I have the Power Mac G4 OS X 10.2.1 install discs that came with the computer, as well as the Mac OS 9 Install disc.
When I try to boot from the OS X install disc, nothing really happens. I've tried running the application on the disc taht automatically restarts the computer to the install disc. I've tried restarting while holding down the C key. I've tried selecting it as the startup disc in system preferences. I've tried holding down the option key when restarting, and it doesn't even list the install disc as an option.
The only thing different that happens when I try any of these methods (except the option key, where nothing different happens at all) is when starting up, a small bluish-purplish folder with the "mac face" on it shows up for about 5 seconds, and then it continues on to start up normally in my current OS 10.4.9, just like it would when doing a normal restart.
Oh yeah, and I've tried this with multiple copies of the OS X install discs that are specifically for G4s and the same thing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not the CD.
Can anyone help me in my quest to get a version of OS 9 running on my computer? Thanks in advance for the help!!!

I've done some checking and apparently this isn't possible with 10.4...
I have no idea where you might have got that info, but it is not correct. OSX 10.4 (Tiger) does indeed work with Classic. Classic needs to be OS 9.1 or later; OS's 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 have better compatibility in that role.

Your machine will not be able to use any original OSX Install CDs that are for a different model G4 - the original disks that ship with a machine are specific to that particular model.
Since your G4 apparently came with a separate Software Install CD for OS 9, that is what you should use to get OS 9 onto the hard drive. Boot to that CD, then run the installer app - Mac OS Install.
Depending what version is installed by that disk, you may want to update it to a later version of OS 9 via download updater. However, if your G4 originally came also with OSX install disks, then the separate OS 9 Install CD is at least OS 9.2.
It would help to know the exact model G4 you have, including processor speed and number of processors.

I am trying to use a Norton SystemWorks 3.0 original boot CD as my startup disk so I can run Norton recover file app.. I tried booting with the CD in the internal Superdrive by holding down the option key. The pick your startup volume window appeared but only the internal HD startup volume appeared. I also tried booting from the same Norton CD by using the Preference Startup Disk options. When I tried this, the Norton CD appeared, I selected it and confirmed that I wanted to change to the Norton CD as my startup disk. However, when the system rebooted it booted from the internal HD startup volume and not the Norton CD as selected. I finally tried to boot with the Norton CD in the Superdrive and holding down the "c" key. The system never booted. I got the mac folder and ? mark instead. This is my first Power Mac...can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? If I try the same Norton CD as a startup disk in an iMac using 10.4.3, it works ok. THANKS!

Back again. I tried the OSX install disk and its startup disk menu option. However, since I had the install disk in the Superdrive I could swap it out to see if the Norton CD would be recognized. I was glad to find out that the Superdrive will recognize a startup or boot disk, i.e., OSX install disk. So, it's not the Superdrive. There's nothing wrong with my system...I just wanted to try to use Norton file recovery to retrieve some Mail messages I deleted by accident. I know there is a problem with Norton and 10.4.x. I'm looking at replacing it with either Tech Tools Pro, Drive Genius or just using Apple Disk Utility, Onyx and iPartition and iDefrag. If you think of anything esle, please let me know.
