Power macintosh 7600/132

hello everyone, today i was looking for a tiger install disc that my dad lost and i found a power macintosh 7600/132. could someone tell me how much money i could get for this?

Here's the specs on your 7600 http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/stats/powermac7600132.html
Probably less than $20. You can buy the early G4's for around $100.
Rather than trash it, offer it for free on your local Craig's List or your local Freecycle.

    Hi,
If I understand things correctly, the minimum requirements for Cubase SX 3 are a Power Macintosh G4 and Mac OS X 10.3.3. If so, that means that the program cannot be used on a Power Macintosh 7600/132. That would also explain why the aforementioned file is a .dmg (a disk image type used with Mac OS X).
You may want to contact the manufacturer Steinberg for information about whether another program/version for Mac OS 9 or earlier is available.
If you just wish to transfer files on the 7600/132 to the new iMac, Ethernet can be used locally (TCP/IP, via a router with a switch). "Normal" file sharing does not work because of operating system incompatibilities. However, you could install a small FTP server (such as the now free NetPresenz) on the 7600/132, and then access the files using an FTP client on the modern machine. Alternatively, you could use a "cloud drive" on the Internet. The Danish System 7.6 should include basic TCP/IP software. It should be possible to use a CD-R for any needed transfers of files (like the FTP server software) to the 7600/132, unless that computer is capable of connecting directly to the Internet.

  • Power Macintosh 7600 USB output

I have purchased a Brother HL-5240 printer that I am primarily using with my G3 and G4 computers. I however also have a Power Macintosh 7600 running system 8.1 that I would like to occasionally print from. The computer has appletalk and serial port, the printer has USB and parallel ports. Any inexpensive solutions out there.
    Thanks for the input.
    Spencer

Because you need to be running OS 8.6 (or newer) for USB support, you'd need to purchase a universal Mac OS installer CD for OS 8.5 or 8.5.1 (updated to 8.6 via free download), 8.6 (which is more rare to find), or 9.x. The Brother download page for the printer's pre-OS X PostScript driver specifies OS 9.x. It's possible that they just didn't test it with 8.6 and it will function anyway, but keep that in mind if you decide to buy an OS installer CD. A 7600 would have no problem running OS 9.1, as long as you have adequate memory installed in it. Additionally, I'd recommend looking for an older (now-discontinued) USB 1.1 PCI card. The 7600's PCI controller could have problems with a USB 2.0 card, because they're multi-bus cards.

  • Connecting ibook 500 Mhz running Tiger 10.4.4 to Power MacIntosh 9500/132

I had a cable plugged into the side of my ibook (500-MHz PowerPC G3 processor) in the slot <...> and then into my Power MacIntosh 9500/132 in its slot <...>
I then selected chooser in the apple menu and could access files and software from each machine, allowing me to operate between the two macs to put together my community newsletter.
I upgraded my ibook which now runs Tiger 10.4.4( which is great) but I can no longer connect to my Power Macintosh which has all my software for the newsletter.
    Can any one help.
    Thank you
iBook 500-MHz PowerPC G3 processor   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Upgraded to 576 MB SDRAM

I'm not familiar with the Power Mac 9500. Is that in
    OS 9?
If it is, have you retained OS 9 boot capability on
the iBook? If so, you may have to use it. If not, you
may have to put it back on.
Which OS were you using on the iBook before you
    upgraded to 10.4.4?
You may get some better ideas if you post in the
    forum for pre-G3 desktops:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=602
My Power Macintosh 9500/132 uses Mac OS 9.
My iBook original came with MAC OS 9.0.4, and MAC OS 10.0.1, when I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.4 the classic environment disappearred.
I still have my MAC OS 9 discs, but if I reinstall them won't I loose everything I have installed with MAC OS 10.4.4?

  • Moving files from a Power mac 7600

    Hi,
My friend's Dad has 2 Macs, a power mac 7600 and a iMac.
He would like to get a bunch of files off a power macintosh 7600 on to an external hard drive, to be accessed on the imac. Is this possible and what external hard drive would you recommend?
    Thanks for any insights!
    cheers!

Whew, this isn't going to be easy at all of the 4 ways I can think of due to the ports involved on both ends!
    1. Compressing them & eMailing them if the 7600 connects to the Internet.
    2. Ethernet & File Sharing, not easy to connect the 2 but possible.
OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8 machine.
Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...
    http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/
    Which makes OS9 Tiger compatable.
"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."

    3. Finding a hard to find SCSI external Drive & an even harder to find  Firewire<->SCSI converter.
    4. Via Floppy Disk & Finding a USB Floppy for the newer on. Can't remember if they had an Internal Floppy on the 7600.

  • More PM 7600/132 Questions

I currently have 208 MB in my old PM 7600/132 with Sonnet G4/450.
The Crucial website gives the maximum ram ast 512 MB...but if all 8 slots were populated with 128 MB DIMMs, that would be 1 GB. Is the stated 512 MB limit a logic board physical address limit, an OS address limit, or something else?
Just curious about how far this machine can be upgraded.

Adding a pair of 128 MB DIMMs to your existing RAM would probably be more than adequate, since you're running OS 9.1. There's a point of diminishing returns, in terms of the $$ spent and performance gains realized. The computer will likely never need/use all of the installed memory, if you bumped it up to 512 MBs. If you've got an assortment of low density memory modules installed (8 or 16 MB DIMMs), you might want to pull them. As I recall, there were reported problems with interleaved memory in those Power Mac models, when upgraded with a G3/G4 processor card. The solution was to not install matching DIMMs in corresponding memory slots (B4 & A4, B3 & A3, etc.). If you've got some 32 or 64 MB DIMMs, pair one of those with each 128 MB DIMM in the corresponding slots.

  • Can't install OS 8.6 on Power Macintosh 6100/66

    I have a Power Macintosh 6100/66 with a 350MB hard drive
I want to install MkLinux as well but the drive is just too small, so I got a 2GB drive and put that in instead.
After booting from my CD I tried to run the installer but just got a "this program cannot run on your computer"
Can someone help me with this?

    Hi, Agent 24 -
Disks that have the designations "Software Install" and "Software Restore" are OEM disks, meaning disks that came with a machine when it was new. Almost always those kinds of disks are model-specific - they are usable only on the model with which they came., and not on a different model. OEM disks usually also state a model designation on them; however, since the hardware on all models which have the same general class designation (such as "iMac") is not the same, an OEM disk will usually not work on a different model even from the same class.
Retail OS 8.5, OS 8.5.1, and OS 8.6 disks have a green label, do not state a model type on the label, and do not show the designation "Software Install" or "Software Restore".
One source for retail disks is Hardcore Mac; Googling may locate others on line; and EBay is a possibility. Regardless of the source, you will need a retail Install disk for that model.

  • Power Macintosh 7200 to Mac Mini back up and secure wipe question

Hi all, nearly figured this on my own but hope that someone here can fill in the gaps.
I have a clunky old 7200/75/16 (no upgrade card, bog standard machine) I want to sell/give/dump.
Before that, I need to back up the 500 MB HDD (hard to believe that was big once, now looking at a 500 GB HDD for the new machine!) and then secure wipe it.
I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk. So far, so good.
Now, how about the secure wipe? I've had a look but I've not had any success in finding a how-to.
I have a feeling I can't use Disk Utility in Leopard for this, but maybe I am wrong.
Advice is sought from anyone here that can share their expertise on the best way to go.
A cheap/free solution (that doesn't destroy the machine) would be welcomed!
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200. I unwisely bought the machine without them but vaguely recall from an earlier Macintosh that Disk First Aid had some kind of format facility though I doubt it was far from secure by today's standards. I figure I can find a set of installer disks on eBay to get the 7200 operational again once I've completed this chore...

I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk.
File sharing via AppleTalk cannot be used with the most modern operating systems. You should be able to use TCP/IP. A third-party program may be of interest. Also, see this article for some general information.
Now, how about the secure wipe?
One could use Drive Setup (a 1.7.3 version is available for download) for this. Under the Functions menu you will find Initialization Options, where "Zero all data" can be chosen. However, the program has to run from another disk (such as a bootable floppy). It is possible to create and modify a startup floppy on the 7200.
A third-party application such as Wipe Info (part of Norton Utilities, commercial) or Burn 2.5 (freeware) could be used, too.
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200.
The Disk Tools PPC (here) is one thinkable startup floppy for the Power Macintosh computer in question. If necessary, a complete System 7.5.3 (e.g., the International English version here) can be downloaded from Apple.

  • Need help finding a good monitor for a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0)

    Hi
I've owned Macs since the 90's - the past 7 years have been using Imacs...  I'm going to purchase a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0) with the Nvidia 6600LE card.  Whats a decent monitor for it?  It's DVI output only as far as I can tell - I want at least a 22 or 24 inch monitor and want a fairly inexpensive one as I'm a poor man (Social Security disability).  Can anyone suggest one - I can't tell what screen resolutions are optimal for the card (googled till my eyes hurt) if I knew that I could start hunting CompUSA, Sams Club, etc.

Check out newegg.com. I just got the same G5 you have this past summer and a couple months ago finally decided it was time to ditch the old 21" CRT Viewsonic Ive been using for years.
I picked up a 21" Acer widescreen HD LCD on sale for $119.00 from newegg and could not have been happier..
Ive never bought anything from Acer before but its so far got no complaints from me other then, the DVI cable they give you is the wrong type to use with your G5's video card. Lucky for me it had a DVI-VGA adapter so I could get running. Its running just fine at 1900x1200 without any dual link DVI connecter.
One thing I like about newegg is you get to read user reviews and they are not afraid to tell you if something is bad. Theyve always got different models and brands rotating on and off sale so check em out and make sure you check the reviews and you can find a killer deal.
I think the Viewsonics I looked at in the same size were around $199 or so.. I wouldve got one but Im a broke and jobless kinda guy nowadays so had to get one as cheap as I could..

  • Change from an older Power Macintosh 7200/90 to a new iMac or  Mac Pro

On my Power Macintosh 7200/90 using Mac OS 8.0 I have stored a lot of very sensitive data which I cannot afford to loose. My machine works very good at this moment, however, I want to buy a new one like an iMac or a Mac Pro with the new generation of . Of course, I use a very powerful backup-program with an external hard drive and a Retrospect-backup program. Nevertheless, I want to further use my Office suite and other useful programs like i.e. the retrospect-software.
    My questions now:
-- Is it possible to buy a new Mac and clone/mirrow everything from the old machine to the new one except the Operating System ?
-- Is there any store close to Koblenz, Germany who is knowledgeable enough to provide this service for me provided I buy a new Mac ?

    Accessing Backup data:
Your 7200/90 uses SCSI drives, so an external drive is likely to be a SCSI drive. A newer Mac that can accept a PCI SCSI card would be required to read backup data directly off a SCSI drive. A MacBook would NOT be able to do this easily.
According to this article, Retrospect 6.1.138 supports Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. So it appears that there is a way to restore your backup data using Retrospect:
    http://kb.dantz.com/display/2n/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=9628&r=0.6172602
This site and this article may also be available in German or French.
    Accessing the original data:
    • If your WLAN Base Station has an available RJ-45 Ethernet port, you can add the 7200 to your existing Network and use Apple File Sharing to copy the files to your newer Mac.
    • Shared Disks and Directories appear as a Hard Drive Icon on the Desktop of the Mac initiating the Sharing, and can be copied using the Finder Drag and Drop.
    • Apple File Sharing works on Macs from System 7.5.3 through the current version of Mac OS X. To Share with Macs running 7.5.3 through 8.6, you must start File Sharing at the Older Mac.
    • The software for File Sharing is included with Mac OS, and may already be installed.

  • Power Macintosh 7500/100 thinks all floppies are locked.

My new (to me) Power Macintosh 7500/100 is thinking all disks I put in it are locked. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the drive?
    Thanks,
    George W.
    www.apple-commercials.co.cc

This is how I clean floppy drives:
    1) Remove floppy drive from the computer.
    2) Remove the cover.
    3) Use a can of compressed air, making sure all the loose dust is gone.
    4) Use cotton swabs to reach the tighter spots, making sure all dirt is cleaned out.
    5) Lubricate the mechanism and springs with 3-in-1 multipurpose oil, a silicone grease or something similar. Do not use WD-40 or white lithium grease - these won't last long.
    6) Reassemble the drive and install it back into the computer.
    7) Use a floppy drive cleaning diskette/kit to clean the read/write heads of the drive. Although this can be done manually with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, it is more safe to use a cleaning diskette because you cannot damage the drive this way. If doing it manually, please be careful and don't stretch the read/write head spring too far - otherwise, the upper read/write head will never go down again.
If you follow these easy procedures, your drive should be good as new. Good luck!

  • Power Macintosh G3 (beige)   Desktop Mac OS X  Monitor problem

I am trying to use a Power Macintosh G3 desktop (beige) that has been unused for about 8 years now. When I first turned it on all was fine, but in subsequent boot ups the monitor has failed to come on. The green light on the monitor flashes. I can hear the operating system booting up but I can also hear a rather ugly sound - which I think has been described as like smashing glass. The happens once when I first boot up.
I would assume it is a problem with the monitor - but am not sure of this smashing glass sound and what that means. If I do have to replace or try a different monitor - are there issues in connecting etc - I presume I will have easy access only to a more recent monitor.
    thanks
    sp1952

What kind of monitor are you using and how is it connected? Some older Apple monitors with the ADB pass-though (for plugging the keyboard and mouse to the monitor when the CPU is tucked under the desk) would not allow resolution changes unless the ABD connection was used.
The Beige G3 will always boot to 640x480 res and then change to your desired setting only after the users prefs load. That also means that, with a dead PRAM battery, it's going to reset to 640x480. If the monitor can't support this res, then you get black.
Try a PRAM reset. Find the "CUDA Reset button" using this logic board diagram:
    http://macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mbppcg3mini.php
Press and hold it for 20-30 seconds to clear all the contents of RPRAM. New factory defaults will load into PRAM on the next boot. A weak/dying battery can lead to corrupted PRAM contents, and the CUDA reset is your new best friend for dealing with such nonsense.

  • Power Mac 7600 doesn't start from Mac OS 9.1 CD

I'm trying to boot from a Mac OS 9.1 CD on a Power Mac 7600 I'm trying to bring back to life
but it appears the blinking question mark. I've tried using the "C" command but it simply doesn't boot.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for any help

One of my favorite pre-G3 Macs! I have one that runs great.
---First, has anyone pulled/replaced/moved RAM modules? My experiences with several 7600's at work back in the 1990s was that the RAM needed to be matched in order in the slots and by size regardless of what the specs and several third-party tech reviews say.
There are eight RAM slots in two groups (of three and five slots) separated by an offset slot for a cache module You should see ID codes on the logic board by each slot: A1, A2, A3, A4; and B1, B2, B3, and B4. You want to load the slots in this order: A1, B1, A2, B2, etc, and match the module size so modules of the same size are paired. My 7600 has this pattern:
    A1: 128MB        B1: 128MB
    A2: 32MB          B2: 32MB
    A3: 16MB          B3: 16MB
    A4: 16MB          B3: 16MB
So, if modules don't match, match them and try again
Pairing RAM in this model gives a significant performance boost; the data path goes from 64-bit to 128-bit.
---Is the OS9 disk a full retail install disk or a gray one that came with a newer Mac? That could affect startup, Some disks for much newer Macs may not start a pre-G3 Mac.
---If the commuter has been off wall power for a long time the PRAM battery is likely deader than Yorick. That could affect startup from the hard drive but should not be at play when starting from a CD.
---Another issue  that affects old computers that have been stored and moved around is loose cards. Make sure all card and modules are fully seated, especially the processor card.
Anyway, those are some things to consider. Keep us posted!

  • Power Macintosh 4400/200 (7220) – No video output

    Hi guys
In my collection, I've got a "mutant mac", a Power Macintosh 4400/200 and I'd like to bring it back to life again!
The owner wanted to throw it away, so I got it (with mouse and keyboard) and the same day, I also saved a boxed Power Mac G4 AGP 350 Mhz from being recycled...
Well, the problem: No video output at all! As I don't have any old Apple CRTs (yet ;–)   ), I tried 5 other CRTs with a DB-15 to VGA adapter (tried all possible resolutions). The CRTs lights don't even get green when I connect it to the 4400.
But I think that it still boots (start up gong, hard drive seems to be working). I've done PRAM-reset several times...
    So:
    1. Adapter dead?
    2. VRAM dead?
    3. PRAM battery dead? But that wouldn't affect the graphics, I guess...
    Where would you start?
    Thx a lot!
    Nicolas (from Switzerland)

    Hi!
The previous owner already got it with the problem some years ago... and it is possible, but I'm not sure, that the guy who gave it to him already got it with the problem too ^^ Well...
I've noticed something: When I press the start button (not holding it like for a forced shut down) when it is running, it immediately shuts down... normal? Or does it depend on the OS?
The VRAM seems clean, but the RAM... not corroded, but maybe it could need some cleaning... I'll do that (and some research about the model).
I think it's still original (not upgraded).
VRAM: AP2761-04   original (on the 200, 2MB VRAM)

    Slot 2 is empty
In slot 3: SEC KMM366F213BK-6U (on mine, its' written Korea 9710 instead)
