Power Management Issue - Can't get my iMac to stay off!

I've recently been having issues with my screensaver freezing, or it doesn't come on when it should, or it comes on and then turns off (back to the desktop), and/or my display sleep never kicks in or stays kicked in. The other night, I couldn't get the stupid screensaver to engage when moving the mouse pointer to the hotcorner. So, I ended up shutting down the iMac.
Well, I crawl back in bed and about 2min later the iMac is powering back on! I shut it down again, and once more in a few minutes it's powering back on. This has happened before a few times. The only way to keep it off is to pull the plug.
Am I missing a setting? Is there some plist, in addition to the screensaver plist, that needs to be tossed in the trash??
Thanks

Unplug them and see if it helps. If it doesn't you can always plug them back in. If it does help then try them one by one until you find the problem.
I'd also post this question in the iMac hardware forum. There's various basic hardware features you can reset at bootup time. On old Macs like mine it is the PRAM but the name and features have changed with time. It may be something like that on your computer since I know on some models this also controls sleep functions. I'm sure somebody on the iMac hardware forum could tell you very quickly what it is on your computer.

  • I can't get my iMac to respond only the right click works

I can't get my iMac to restart itt seems to start Rita back where it was when I restart and my mouse is not responding right. I can't get it to click regularly. Only the right click works

Which mouse and iMac do you have? Over the past 4 years or so there have been at least 3 mice that work on Intel based iMacs.
The first place to check is the mouse's preferences which are at System Preferences - Mouse.
If they are set correctly then do a SMC reset and see if that solves the issue:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz - Bad Logic Board or Power Management Issue?

I have a Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz/1.5GB/80GB which I bought non-working. It has not yet been disassembled or examined by a certified tech. This is it's issue (which replicates): the computer powers on. It makes a single warning tone, then the LED flashed at least 15 times (too fast to count). Then the posting chord is heard. Hard drive spins up. Then nothing (no video). Won’t boot from any disk. I have changed the RAM and tested the RAM banks with known-to-be-good RAM from another DP1.8GHz G5. The warning tone stopped once or twice after this switch, but then it didn’t chime. I changed the PRAM battery, but not with as new one. However, after installing the used one and then resetting the PMU, it displayed video briefly for the first time. While installed in the other 1.8GHz G5, the hard drive was formatted, given a clean install of OS X 10.4.11, and then moved into this computer where is never mounts. The computer is not accessible through TDM.
Do I have a bad logic board? Bad CPUs? A power managment issue? A RAM issue?

Through my own trial and error troubleshooting, I have found the CPUs to be in good working order and the logic board passes the Apple Service Diagnostic every time. Despite the installation of numerous pairs of modules that worked in another DP1.8GHz, the computer has a RAM issue-it gives the "no good RAM" tone most of the time when it powers up (after a PMU reset it does not). Also the computer boots from disk or into Open Firmware but the disk utility can't see either hard drive so I may have a bad SATA controller.

You stated; " I have been successful with My Power Mac "
A Power Mac is incapable of being upgraded to Mavericks. It is a PPC Mac which can only run versions of OS X up to 10.5.8 and no higher. Any version of OS X higher that 10.5.8 requires an Intel processor to run.
Does the iMac meet the hardware requirements for Mavericks?

  • 870A-G54 - power management issues

A power-management issue with standby. I've set standby to be "S3" in the BIOS - the system goes into standby fine and wakes up fine.
The problem is, if the system is in standby for a few hours, at some point during that time, it turns itself off fully. As in, powered-down-pressing-the-power-button-causes-the-system-to-boot-from-scratch "fully off". This has happened three times so far (every time I've left the system on standby for a long period). This happens whether the BIOS "EuP 2013" setting is enabled or disabled.
The duration of time is less than 4hrs, though I don't know what the cutoff is exactly.
    No power-cuts. ;-)
Any suggestions? I don't know much about ACPI (had to look up what to set the "standby" to in the first place).
    MSI 870A-G54
    Athlon II x3 450
    Powercool 1gb AMD 5670 gfx
    2*2gb RAM
    Antec Earthwatts 380 Green PSU
    500GB Samsung HDD
    Windows XP SP3 32 bit
    NOT over/underclocked in any way.

Right, I've been conducting some experiments to try and narrow this down.
With the New powersupply (the Antec 380 Earthwatts):
    - S1 standby works fine.
    - S3 standby works for 12-13 minutes. After that the blinking-power-led stops blinking. If at this point I press the power-button, the computer does NOT turn on. It remains completely unresponsive. I have to wait about 2 more minutes before the power button starts responding, at which point I am booting from scratch (BIOS).
With the Old powersupply, a non-brand (It says "COLORSit") 400w affair that's known-good.
    - S1 standby works fine.
    - S3 standby does not work at all. The system is powered-off but actually turns off fully rather than into standby. No flashing power-LED. Pressing the power button results in booting from scratch (BIOS).
This old-powersupply was tested with the EuP 2013 both enabled and disabled.
For both experiments the dvd-drive was disconnected, so we can rule that out too (though it was never really a contender. :-) )
Given this, I'm inclined to rule out the powersupply as a cause - this is a years-old power-supply that I've never had a problem with.
Anyone have any thoughts? I'm leaning towards motherboard, but standby isn't something I know much about, so I defer to the board for suggestions.

    Hi
My Powerbook was the same. Only fix is to reinstall OSX from the install CD but be sure not to pick the Format and install clean. Once you boot with the install CD pick the preserve user data and settings.
On My machine the reinstall looked perfect. My network, email, files and all the programmes were all there. Most apps worked fine but Adobe CS2, Virtual PC and NetBarrier all needed reinastallation as they reported a few files or registration was missing. I went for the 10.4.3 upgrade again and it worked fine.
    Good luck

  • How can I get my iMac to work with scanners?

How can I get my iMac to work with scanners? The scanners scan just fine, but not to my iMac. I've tried Epson and HP all-in-ones; it makes no diffference. I'm becoming extremely displeased, but don't know at whom I should be displeased, the printer guys or Apple. Help?

My Epson is able to do scans using Image Capture without any problems at all.

  • How can I get my imac to get valid ip numbers?

how can I get my imac to get valid ip numbers?

Try renewing you DHCP Lease, click on your system preferences and then click network.  Select your ethernet connect on the left then click the advance button, when the windows opens make sure the TCP/IP tab is selected then click the Renew DHCP Lease, wait a few minutes and then check your IP address.  Also check you DNS by clicking on the DNS tab and taking a look at you DNS servers then should be the same as you other computers.

  • How can I get my IMac to recognise the scanner part of the HP printer/scanner?  It prints!

How can I get my iMac to recognise the scanner part of the HP printer/scanner?  It prints!@

I had a similar problem right after the first update to 10.6.7, which happened to quite a few people.  It took a couple of software updates and then an HP printer update to fix it.  So make sure that all your software updates are up to date.   Mine is an older printer: C6280 All-in-one but scans fine now that my mac recoginises it.  You might want to check on the HP site also.
It was really frustrating because it had worked fine before.

  • How can I get my iMac to show videos, such as those on YouTube, again?

How can I get my iMac to show videos, such as those on YouTubes, email, AOL, and others, again.

OK. What happens when you try?
Have you updated your Flash to the latest video? Worth trying again, just in case you haven't.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Click Install Now, download, and run the installer from your Downloads folder. Make sure you install it all the way (it'll ask you to quit Safari). Then re-launch Safari and try the video sites again. If that doesn't work, download and run Firefox, and try there - let us know if one browser works and one doesn't.

I can't get my iMac to accept a CD/DVD disc.  It acts like there's already one in there but there isn't.  Tried the help menu but nothing worked.Suggestions?

Thank you, Allen.  My iMac is a 2009.  I can't shine a light into the disc drive slot as it has a built in whisker cover that prevents anything from getting in.  It will accept a disc half way in before the disc reaches a springy obstruction.
About 3 weeks ago, the computer locked up so I inserted the OS disc and reinstalled it.  In general, the computer works just like it used to but we've had a few quirks appear; for example, this is one of them.  Also, we can't figure out how to keep from having to sign-in when we turn the computer on.  Also, we can't access our one on-line account anymore.  Very strange.

P.S.:  Just realized I mis-spelled your name.  Sorry Allan.

  • Can i get my imac g5 that has vertical lines on it fixed for free as it is a fault???

can i get my imac g5 that has coloured vertical lines on it fixed for free as it is a manufacturing fault???
just asking cause it is really annoying
and also if it gets done for free do i need to under warrenty and apple care or can it get done without the warrenty as i looked it up and it said on mac rumors that it didn't have to be under warrenty.
    thanks heaps.

Well I said thank you Apple too soon I guess! It's been a week since I filled out the form for the free update/upgrade program, still haven't heard anything from them! They only responded that they received my request and gave me a reference number but the email address was a "no-reply" address so where am I supposed go on and check or ask or inquire with this number?
When I go to the original webpage given to apply for the program there is no section to check the status of my application! So again I wander where can I write to, to ask about the status of my application for the free update of my OS X Lion software?
Do I write to App Store or iTunes or Apple US or the Turkish reps? The store I bought it from doesnt know about this they say it's all done thru Apple?
I'm confused! Who should know and where did my application go to? Who receives these forms and who do I check in with? Does anybody know?
    Thank you.
