Power management on Mac Pro

Hello,
I have a question. Is it possible to start a Mac Pro without using the start button located on the machine ?..
On old iMac it was possible to start directly from the keyboard, we can't on a Mac Pro..
It's for someone who's tetraplegic and therefore cannot access to the startup button.
Thanks for your help.
George

Is there a reason the computer need to be turned off?
You could set the computer to auto reboot after power failure. And Automatically powers up every day at x time. Instead of shutdown, use sleep, and reboot. The computer sleeps faster then it shutdown. It will wake faster then it takes to start up. The computer is just as quite asleep as it is shutdown. An added benefit of sleep is the computer can be woken up by network connectivity. For instance to use back to my mac to do screen sharing/control.
For a hard shutdown (if the computer is frozen) you could put a power strip on the desk with power switch. Because the computer is set to power on after power failure, flip the switch off and then on will reboot the computer.
The only way he would be able to turn off the computer and not turn it back on would be if he chose shutdown. you can hide the shutdown command.

Whatever the problem is you no longer have a bootable system. You need to try reinstalling OS X.
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Power button issue Mac Pro 2.66

Mac Pro 2.66 is connected to a power strip I now notice that I do not have to press the power button to boot this Mac up. To boot it I need to just turn the power strip on WITHOUT pressing the power button and it boots right up. Only occasionally when I turn on the power strip its connected to I have to boot using the power button.
My question is what should I do here?
Isn't the power button part of the power supply?
If so can I repair the button or do I need a new power supply?
    Anyone?

  • Shocked by lack of interest in buying my Power PC or Mac Pro

This isn't really meant to be a question, but rather a statement . . . of astonishment.
I guess I'm like, waaaaaay out of touch, but has it reached the point where desktop computers are pretty much obsolete? I guess I'm not talking about iMacs so much, but the towers -- The G5 and the Mac Pro.
I have a fantastic PPC G5 tower with googolbytes of HD space and RAM, with a fantastic graphics card yada yada but I just can't even seem to GIVE it away.
How can it have come to this?
I mean, I love my MacBook Pro and my MacBook Air and my iPad. But they are completely different animals to my PPC and my MacPro (I have both -- the MacPro is running an Intel chip and the PPC is running, well, a PPC chip.
But I can't seem to drum up even a yawn when I post either of them for sale on my local classifieds site. I mean, we're talking boxes that have at least $3-4,000 invested in them, being completely ignored at $300!
I mean, I love my MacBook Pro, but I can't imagine power-editing videos with FCP and dealing with multi-gigabyte files on it. Not even mentioning the lack of screen space . . . but what is the "new" setup for the pros these days? Is it multi machines -- one MacBook Pro surrounded by two vast monitors, or one iMac flanked by 30" screens . . . what is it nowadays?
I hear not a peep from any media whatsoever about Mac Pros and the next generation of monster tower computers . . . is Apple phasing these things out?
It sure would appear so. It would also appear that I am now the proud owner of two huge paperweights.
    What's up?

Steve Jobs foresaw the end of the desktop era a few years ago, though he said desktops will still remain viable and available for specific purposes, much as trucks are designed for different purposes than cars. Desktop PCs have generally been on the decline for at least the past couple of years. By and large people don't want them any more. The market has expressed a clear preference for small, portable, reliable devices to tweet, text, and otherwise waste time.
No one is going to pay much for any PowerPC Mac. Unless they are already using one to perform actual work and has an unexpected failure, they are going to upgrade.
If you want to get the maximum resale value for your G5, clean it up, repackage it in its original box, install its original OS, include the discs and original documentation, write a good description and include clear pictures. What you get for it, you get.
The market is the ultimate judge of a thing's worth. People are not going to pay much for a platform that has been obsolete for seven years. Eight years is just about the limit of economic life for any Mac. It has been that way since about 1984.
For those of us who need to use more capable machines to perform actual work, any Intel Mac will far exceed the capability of any PowerPC Mac. If an iMac's limitations are insufficient for your needs Tim Cook alluded to new Mac Pro models being introduced sometime this year.

  • Mac Pro Power Up failure - Mac Pro goes on and off

Since few months my Mac Pro first generation (2x 2.66 GHz Dual core 8 GB RAM with ATI Radeon XT1900X 512 Mb video card) frequently does not start up. When pushing the power button it starts up and in few seconds turns off again. I have reset the SMC, done a hardware test for RAM etc. The machine has had a dure test at a service provider but the problem was not found.
Few weeks ago the problem began again and sometimes the Mac Pro starts up normal and sometimes the problem occurs again. And sometimes the Mac Pro goes of spontaniously. Can this be the Video card causing this problem? The RAM seems to be OK, cause I replaced the 4x 2xGB DIMMS with the older 2x 512 MB DIMMS that came with the Mac Pro and the same problem occurs.
Has anyone has this problem and/or knows a solution?

I just starting having this problem today. I turned on my Mac Pro this morning and after a few seconds it shut down and then restarted. It kept doing that so I finally unplugged the computer. Prior to today the computer would sometimes shutdown or restart on it's own but I could usually get it boot back up and was able to use the computer. It's still unplugged and I'll leave it that way until I get home from work today. I did open up the case and blasted out as much of the dust that's built up with a can of compressed air. I've read about resetting the SMC but can I do that if the computer keeps restarting after a few seconds? I have AppleCare for the Mac Pro should I just set up an appointment and take it in? I worried that it may be an issue with the power supply. Any suggestions? I appreciate the assistance!!!
    Thanks!!

  • How much UPS power for a Mac Pro?

I think if I buy a Mac Pro I'll need up grade my UPS. The electrical requirements don't specify the supply power, so I'm not sure how big my UPS should be. I want to purchase the smallest UPS possible to give me a few minutes of protection, but I don't want to buy a 100-pound monster if I don't have to.
I know that the actual power drawn depends on the specific configuration, so a Mac with four video cards will use more than the base model. I'm just hunting for an estimate.
I plan to get a 2.66GHz with a couple of hard drives and the base 7300 video card.
    Thanks.

My personal Pro level favourites are the APC BACK-UPS RS 800VA, 1000VA and 1500VA models…
    http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=23
The 800VA model is especially efficient and probably more suited to what you're after. The 1000VA model isn't the smallest UPS I've seen so be sure to clearly check the dimensions.
Remember that your UPS will be supplying power to not only uour Mac Pro but your display and other peripherals as well so stepping up a bit is well worth it.

  • Power cable for Mac Pro

My friend has asked me to look at his Mac Pro which when he last used it had had its psu replaced. Since then it has been put aside and I've brought it home. It has no power cable. Where can I get one? I'm in Perth 6149 WA.

If what you are saying is accurate, you have a power supply that is truly bizarre. The entire world has standardized on the C13 and C14 connectors shown in this Wikipedia article. I do not know how you could even buy a power supply with a different connector.

  • Question marks/drivers in Device Manager on Mac Pro Win Xp

    I have attempted to slipstream and install the SATA drivers onto a separate drive in my Mac Pro. It is confusing though, some people say use he ACHI version of the drivers while others say use the RAID. I used the raid. Anyway I did not install the chipset drivers but used the drivers produced by Boot Camp 1.1. I installed them after the Win XP install. When I look at device manager I have question marks (?) by the following items;
Other devices- Base system device, under System devices-Intel 5000 Series chipset PCI Express x4 port3-25E3, port5, port 6, and port 7. I also have a driver with question mark called PCI device. Does anyone else have similar issues. What should I do if anything? Thanks.
    Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   100gb 7200rpm HD + 2gb Ram

I used the Raid drivers as well and have very good performance on any drive activity. As for the other drivers, most people have had luck with using the BootCamp 1.1 Mac driver CD that you can create from the BootCamp Assistant.
It covers the Intel chipset drivers, Ethernet drivers, and typically the Audio chipset. My system still have '!' on the Interl 5000 Series Chipset PCI E x4 port 3-7, but seems to have no effect on the system. The last PCI device would most likely be your Audio Chipset, again try the CD created by BootCamp.

  • Upon pushing power button my mac pro sits in a holding status with the power light blinking continuously.  Fans kick on and it never goes to startup.  Trickle LED shows good as does the Power LED.  No RAM DIMMS are lit either.

Upon powering on my Mac, the power light begins to flash, the fans kick on and the it seems to lock up.  Screen does not come on.  I have confirmed it has Trickle and Power by checking the diagnostic LED's on the mother board.  No other LED's are lit.  None of the RAM LED's are lit either.  I removed the battery from the motherboard and waited ten minutes, then reinstalled it.  What could the issue be?
    Mac Pro specs are:
OS X, Duel Processor, 2.6 GHz, Duel Core, Intel Xeon, 12GB DDR2 RAM

As a general rule, pairs in adjacent slots. Largest sizes on lowest-numbered slots on each riser in turn. It will in work most any order, then when you get close to a final arrangement there is a small .pdf manual available that shows "optimum" arrangement.

  • Can you turn the power of a Mac Pro on using the wireless keyboard?

I have my Mac Pro tower at the other end of a table and I want to remotely turn it on with the Wireless keyboard or Trackpad.
I have it auto turning on in the Morning but would like to control it in case I shut down by accident from across the room.
    Thanks!

The processors in the Mac Pro are socketed so they
can be replaced as long as the replacement processor
is compatible. You could for example get a 2 Ghz Mac
Pro and later replace the Xeon processors with the
    3.0 Ghz processors.
That's great news! Thank you so much for your help. Does that mean im limited at 3.0ghz? Is there away to tell what the motherboard can max out to? Lets say I upgrade in three years and i want to put in a 3.5 or whatever may be available then. As long as its the same type of chip do i have that option? Or is 3.0 the max for the current intel motherboard?
