It depends on the hardware...
ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 power ??? (have a look in the man page)
For most, simply rmmod'ing the driver should work.

  • Turn off only wireless card in AEBS?

The drop down menu 'Wireless Mode' in AirPort Utility has an option to turn off the wireless. Does this physically switches off the wireless card in the AEBS so it doesn't use power anymore and subsequently doesn't emit anything through the antenna? Could someone please shine a light on this? Thanks very much - Jos

So, I opened the thing and did some measurements which indicate the card is almost completely shut down except for appr. 15 mA power still flowing. Here are the results:
With card installed, WLAN and LAN (3 x) connected:
    - starting up: 370 mA (yellow LED steady)
    - started up: 450 mA (yellow LED flashing)
    - wireless mode OFF: 530 mA (green LED steady)
    - wireless mode ON 10 % power: 700 mA
    - wireless mode ON 100 % power: 710 mA
Without card, WLAN and LAN (3 x) connected:
    - starting up: 360 mA (yellow LED steady)
    - started up : 420 mA (yellow LED flashing)
    - online through W/LAN: 520 mA (green LED steady)
So, the card burns about 180 mA @ 12 V (2,2 W) which is appr. 1/4th of the total power consumption.

    Thanks, I think so, too.
But  Apple says  "When changing the SIM card, power off the device prior to opening the SIM tray" in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2309.

  • Will disabling wifi cut power to the wifi card and antenna system?

I have searched the web and even called Apple to have this question answered, nothing found online and apple support kept changing their answer. I would like to keep using the AirPort extreme with ethernet but disable the wifi. I know that turning off wifi on a Mac will cut the power to the AirPort card and stop it from emitting any kind of signal (at least this is what I have been told many times). I am wondering if this goes for the AirPort Extreme as well.
I do not have any kind of equipment to measure signal emissions so I just went off of power readings. I do not have the exact readings here with me at the moment but with wifi on and disabled the extreme uses the exact same mount of power. I know this is hardly accurate but it's all I could do
Does anyone have more detailed/technical information or the equipment to test and verify if the radio is actually disabled when wifi is turned off in AriPort Utility? Apple support told me that when wifi is disabled it will continue to broadcast a signal with the same strength, just not one that can be picked up (no name etc), that it would only stop if the power was cut completely. Then I was told, as soon as wifi is disabled there is only a very weak scattered signal left and then I was told there was no signal at all. (Amazing what kind of answers you can get if you just epeat the same question several times).
    Any help appreciated.

Although I do not have a spectrum analyser.. I do have an excellent ubiquiti router which will produce a spectrum which is somewhat useful at least at 2.4ghz.
I have reduced the wireless routers around me to absolute min.
And I can only do this on 2.4ghz..
So this shows a dlink from a neighbour and the TC sitting near the ubiquiti.
Then I can do a spectrum analysis.
This is with wireless on. You can see the waterfall display of plenty of signal in the channel 6 area.
Now a spectral analysis with wireless off.
You can clearly see there is now no signal at channel 6.. so wireless off has turned off the RF on the TC.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to switch off the Wireless Transmitting of the xDock for the iPod?

    Hey,
Can anybody help me how to switch off the wireless streaming of the xDock transmitter for the iPod? I tried to do it by resetting and I already read the FAQ but nothing seemed to work...
    Thanks for your help. ;-)
    Hi,

    turn it into standby mode
unplug the power supply from the x-fi dock
press the volume controller and hold it while plugging the power supply
the link control led on the backside will glow shortly and and turn off
    thats it
to reactivate it press both the forward and backward wind button for at least 3 seconds
But I think, this is really a shame, that the WLAN network is unusable when using the x-Fi wireless function.

  • Can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

Yes the WiFi card can wear out but not what you would really call wearing out like a pair of pants do. It can start to fail causing the connection between your computer and your Wifi router to slow down, IE transmit and receive less data in a given time period. And then it will fail completely.
But as to your internet connection being affected by a failing WiFi card no that can't happen.
If you turn the WiFi off and connect the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable does your internet browsing and downloading speed increase? If it does then there may be something wrong with the WiFi card in your computer or the WiFi section of your router. Hard to say which.
If after connecting the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable and your speeds do not increase then it is a problem with the router or on your ISPs end.

  • Do I have to power off a wireless keyboard and magic pad ?

    Hello,
I am a new iMac user. I recently purchased it with a wireless keyboard and a magic pad. The question may be simple. When I shutdown the iMac, do I still have to power off the keyboard and magic pad ? Or do they power down as well ? From little research I made, it seems like they would power down themselves provided that there is no other Mac with Bluetooth enabled within range. Thoughts ?
    Thanks.

The wireless mouse and keyboard that came with my Mid 2010 iMac are now paired with my MacBook Pro when it's on the desk, and the trackpad is on my wife's new iMac with 10.8. I don't turn them off unless I'm traveling with them. The trackpad and mouse can go over a year that way on a set of batteries.
The keyboard on the other hand, behaves differently. Where the other two devices will show slow but consistent decay of battery power over time, the keyboard batteries will stay at 100% for quite a while, then drop suddently to 50%, stay there a while, then give up. I've learned to pack a few extra AA batteries in my travel kit as a result of the unpredicitable dropoff instead of short life.
Still the battery life is pretty good for all three and I don't think it hurts anything to leave them on. I do, and the devices are quickly recognized when I open the computer.
It's up to you and what makes you comfortable. Either way they work.

  • T440s...upgrading the wireless card and having trouble

the white and black power connector that connect to the card...how do people normally fit/twist these into place?
    Solved!

    Hi,
Are you asking about the gray and black antenna connectors?  I'd expect them to go on the way they came off the previous card.
Removal and replacement instructions are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T440s page 64.

    Hi,
You may not have a wireless network adapter.
If it is not in Network Adapters and you have no Device Manager errors or disabled devices under Network Adapters then that would be the case.

If you mean AppleCare, then I would believe the answer will be yes.
First make sure you have a full backup of everything on your Mac, then run, don't walk to your nearest Apple store.
Note: Due to your Mac now being in computer years, somewhat elderly, Apple may not have the require parts in stock. This will either mean you might have to leave it with them for a number of days, or maybe they will offer you a new Mac mini. While a new Mac mini (if offered) might be a welcome possibility be aware that the new Mac mini no longer has a CD/DVD drive and it comes with Mac OS X Lion and as a result might not run some of your old software.

  • How can I select which channel the wireless card on the Macbook Pro uses?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro which must be 5-6 years old running OS ver10.5.8 with the following wireless card details..
Wireless Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x86)
      Wireless Card Locale:          Worldwide
      Wireless Card Firmware Version:          1.4.16.2
      Current Wireless Network:          ML MC
      Wireless Channel:          6
.. and a Time Capsule running firmware ver 7.6.1.
We recently installed a faster broadband connection and for some reason the pc’s (recent purchases) we have are regularly getting a 37Gb max download speed and the MacBook Pro is regularly getting only 19Gb max download speed.  All the computers are connecting through the same Time Capsule to the net.  On the Time Capsule the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidths are set so the channel is selected automatically.
Is the max download speed on the MacBook pro slower because of the wireless card in it?  And if so, how can I check?  Could I manually adjust it to a faster setting?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Channels are managed by the router and the automatic settings on your TC is about right - unless you have general WiFi issues.
Your slower speed is down to the older Airport card in your MBP.

  • My iphone 4s is frozen and my lock button doesnt work and i cant slide to power off the phone. HELP

my iphone 4s is frozen on the lock screen. my lock button doesnt work and i cant slide to power off the phone. It has 100% battery and nothing happens when  i plug it into the computer.
My phone screen also is in negative. It is like twitching and ive tried to invert the colors but thats not it. i cant see any apps, pictures , or anything in regular colors. PLEASE HELPPP!

You can't.  You'll have to wait until the battery runs out and then recharge the phone.  It will restart.
Sounds like now's a good time to get the phone fixed.

Your question is very abstract, and difficut to understand what you want to do.  Do you wish to control your spectrum analyzer for TURN-ON and TURN-OFF power?
    Assuming your question is so...
To turn the instrument power OFF, you should look for the GPIB command that can do this in the instrument's operation manual.
To turn the instrument power ON, it is very difficult or almost impossible to do so, because your app program will have no way to communicate with your "unpowered" instrument.
