Power outage caused display issue

we had a power outage that shut off the computer. After unplugging it until the power came back on; we found that when we turned the computer on the display just showed several 4" squares across the screen. The computer seems to have functionality still, but you can't read anything on the screen, it's as if the screen resolution is 7 blocks by 5 on the 20" screen.

Let's try to fix the other account.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.HIToolbox.<12digitHexNu mber>.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Freeware causing display issues

    Hello all-
Having a strange issue. Downloaded some freeware from Disney yesterday for my son to play a Pirates of the Caribbean game. Since then my display is a bit funky. For example, if I click on an icon on desktop, a black box surrounds that icon. Another example is that this textbox where I am typing now has a thick black box outlining it. In other words, anyplace where I have focus has a box around it and this never happened in the many years using this machine. My guess is that it is the freeware from Disney that is the offender, as that is the only change and it happened immediately after he used it the first time.
I'm guessing that deleting the app from the machine will not undo what has been done, but not sure. Any advice on how to get my Mac back to where it was yesterday before I downloaded that software from Disney?
    Regards-
    Dave

Thank you so much. 6 years on the same machine and never even knew about that preference. I noticed that there is a shortcut for turning it on and off. My guess is that the freeware install didn't enable that preference, but that my 8 year old hit the hot keys to enable it while he was playing.
Thanks again Kappy. I thought I had some serious problems

  • Power Outage caused server crash

A breaker flipped and caused both our dhcp and zenworks server to go offline. My main concern right now is getting the internet back up and running. I logged into Sles and we're running oes2. I don't know if I need to restart a service or what, but the server is displaying that there is a log file for viewing I assume? Any help is greatly appreciated as I can't solve this problem on my own.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    some additional tips:
One file I also always check after (re)booting a server is the /var/log/boot.msg. The last lines normally show which services were skipped (normal if there is nothing to do or configured for a service) or failed (which is a first indicator if " stuff" isn't working after bootup).
    To get the last lines of that file, use the tail command;
    #tail /var/log/boot.msg
    Another usefull function of that tail command, is to a get a realtime/feed on a file, like the /var/log/messages;
    #tail -f /var/log/messages
    Or you can combine it with grep to only show lines with a specific content, like messages given by dhcpd;
    #tail -f /var/log/messages|grep dhcpd
    Before restarting a service, it's often good to check the current state of a service;
    #service [servicename] status
(the service command is the same as using rc[servicename] [action], I find it a more logical way to handle services)
The great thing about Linux is that you can do most things using a ssh console connection. It just takes a little time and practice finding all the (often built in) tools you need/prefer.

  • Power outage caused laptop not to boot anymore

I had my hp Pavillion dv9000 connected directly to the wall without the battery inside and was watching a movie. The power outlet suddenly died and consecquently my laptop turned off. Now when I try to turn it on, the fan runs but nothing shows up on the screen; not even the hp logo or BIOS. I noticed that the hard drive access LED never lit up so I assume it wasn't just the screen that broke but something is causing the whole computer not to boot up at all. Most likely something got fried but I'm not sure what. It's a shame because I really liked that laptop and would like to repair it if possible. Does anyone have any suggestion?

    Hello NTHQ,
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your HP notebook powering on.
I have looked for information on your system and I do have a suggestion for you that might be helpful.
You should check and see if you are getting a blink code from the caps lock and num lock keys.
Here is a link explaining the blink codes.
Can you provide your full model and product number?  Here is a link showing how to find that information.
    Let me know what happens.

  • X240 + UltraDock+90W Power + 2 external display issues

Wondering if someone out there can help a newbie. Setup is a x240, Windows 7, Ultradock 90W, with two U2414 Dell monitors. Dual displays are working great, but ONLY if I keep the laptop lid up on the dock. I have tried adjusting the settings to "when I close the lid" to "do nothing", but still both the monitors go black when I close the lid. The setup I am aiming for is as follows.
    1. When the lid is up, I want the internal display to be primary, with one Dell monitor being the extended display.
    2. When the lid is down, I want the leftmost Dell display to be the primary, with the other Dell display being the extended display.
This was very easy with my older setup, but I cannot seem to get it to work with this new laptop and dock. Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?

  • Power Mac G5- Display Issue

PowerMac G5 running OS 10.5.8 with 20" cinema display.
Changed the inverter board in monitor due to one long, two short flashes.  No more flashing light.
    BUT...
Screen resolution is funky.  Have res to highest setting and MOST things look fine except that when I am on the desktop the icons and fonts are too large, gey bar on top of desktop (along with text) is too big.  Checked the settings for desktop icon size, Universal access, etc. etc and everything seems to be in order.
    HOWEVER...
I dove in last night and reinstalled the OS.  During the reinstall the grey bar on top iof desktop (along with text) is fine and the windows that open are of the right size.
    I am dumbfounded...any ideas?

  • Updated to 10.4.10 - cause display issue?

I just updated to 10.4.10 and now my text is blurry on my monitor.
I have a 20' cinema display and this happened as soon as I restarted. Both the monitor and G5 were purchased 3+ years ago.
I'm not nuts - I work on the box 8 hours a day - it's my personal computer I make my living from.
Could the update have made the graphics card screw up? I really don't know too much about the technical side of things. Looking for suggestions.
    Thanks!
    Dual 1.8gb G5     ATI Radeon 9600 XT

You will need to reinstall from the disks that came with your computer, and then install the 10.4.9 update. No, you cannot revert.
Yopu might try reinstalling 10.4.10, with a Combo version, first.

  • Power outage caused invalid date on computer

The power went out and when I next tried to start my mom's computer the finder couldn't find itself with the invalid date and time. I've tried going to prefs to reset clock/date but all is greyed out and the little rainbow wonder ball just keeps spinning. I've tried opening an application & going to systems prefs from there with the same result.

  • End User - ESS Timesheet Display Issue

    Hi All,
Hopefully I have posted this in the correct forum. I tried to search of the issue I have for an end user but had no success, so I thought since my post graduate study surrounds ERP systems and work with SAP every day, I though it was best to register.
Now the issue I have here is, when the user goes into their portal ESS to view their timesheets, the display is unsual. They do not have an option to manually go back to previous weeks and the view of their timesheet is 'squashed' in (Timesheet Entry View) but if you scroll across to the right where the date and 'go to' function is, it has been cut off. There are no issues with any other users so it appears to be a local issue
Currently, I have reverted back to IE7, checked for any add on's that may cause display issues, I have checked their roles and everything is normal. The only issue I can see is some conflicting issues is with the Browser and SAP.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Check the configuration setting for the profile that's being used by ESS. As this is where you can restrict user's ability to navigate forward and back from current week etc.

  • Power Outage & iPod

I had a power outage caused by a sever thunderstorm today around 5:30 pm and as soon as the power came on. I connected the iPod and iTunes ran a test on it and a message saying”iTunes has detected a corrupted iPod the IPod has to be reformatted to be used by iTunes” then another message after clicking ok said”there was problem downloading the iPod software “iPod” the request resource was not found" and right now it’s current state is frozen is there a way this can be fixed?.

    Hi weatherscience!
Have you first tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times. (be sure to leave it on the white side of the switch, which is the Off position)
Next, press and hold the Menu and center buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
You might need to try this several times. Also, attempt this step both while connected to your computer's USB port, and disconnected.
Try restoring your iPod in iTunes again. Do you still get that "requested resource" error?
If so, then let's try forcing your iPod into disk mode. For instructions on how to do that, see this Knowledge Base article:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
Also, if that doens't seem to be helping, you could try all of the five iPod troubleshooting steps, here:

    Any success?

I don't want Firefox to recover pages after a sudden power outage causes the computer to shutdown - how can I stop it?

  • Power shortage caused by mini-display touching firewire port.

I discovered if you touch the in firewire port with a mini-display adaptor the power cuts and you need to restart the machine.
Has anyone else discovered this happens or is it jsut this one machine?

Well that would create a dead short between the pins on the FW port, as the mini display adapter has a metal outer surround, I would think that it cause an issue with any machine as these pins are not intended to ever touch. BE CAREFUL!

  • Display doesn't work after power outage

The electricity was knocked out in my neighborhood for a few hours and when it was finally restored I found that my display no longer works. It is getting no power at all. None of the lights on the front of the display are working--it's totally dead.
No settings or connections were changed during the time when there was no electricity. So it's obviously a result of the power outage, right? I had it plugged into a surge protector (which I thought was supposed to be a safeguard against exactly this type of occurence) so I'm wondering if that has somehow saved me--only there's some secret Mac trick that needs to be done to get my display back to life.
Can anyone please help me? This economy is strangling me to death--I simply cannot afford to buy a new display at this point.

I just realized that I never actually asked my question (duu-uuuh):
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to figure out (without having to spend any money) if my problem is only with the power supply or if the entire display is just garbage at this point?
Or perhaps someone has experienced this situation, was able to resolve it and knows what I should do to make my display functional again?

  • SLM224P POE issue after power outage

Have recently experienced an issue where after a power outage, the device recovers with the exception of the POE ports. This device supports POE on 12 of 24 ports. I have two wireless radios (currently, with plans to expand POE need) on port e1 and e18 (poe is on 1-6 and 12-18). The devices on the non-POE ports all came back up fine following the outage, but the two radios remained inactive despite what the port management details indicated. The java indicatons indicated the ports were down, contrasting the port detail page. There was no power on either port. I recovered by logging into the unit and instigating a reboot at which point all the devices came back.
This is the second time that this has happened, the first time being written off as a fluke. I consider this a pretty serious flaw as the POE aspect is just as vital, if not more so, than a standard non-POE port recovery. The unit is on a UPS, but the outage exceeded the battery duration. The device should recover all operations automatically, without any human intervention. I see that the SRW224P also has similar issues.
There also appears to be a bug in the time setting routine. In some instances I keep getting a message indicating that the time must be later than the time being set...due to the daylight savings time. Turn this off, then set the time and then turn back DST back on. A NTP (auto) server setting would be nice.

I would like to think power could be a factor as a reboot did recover the device, but as stated, it was on a UPS. Granted the battery had depleted and I guess a disturbance might have gotten by (maybe on the power-up cycle), but the device did function fine on the non-POE ports. Seems to be more of a device issue in its ability to recover and know that it has done so correctly. I like the device, just scared as I can't control when an outage or disturbance might occur and the management interface indicates the ports are up when in fact, thay are not. Thanks for the thought though, I will at least try a different make UPS.
