Power outage caused laptop not to boot anymore

I had my hp Pavillion dv9000 connected directly to the wall without the battery inside and was watching a movie. The power outlet suddenly died and consecquently my laptop turned off. Now when I try to turn it on, the fan runs but nothing shows up on the screen; not even the hp logo or BIOS. I noticed that the hard drive access LED never lit up so I assume it wasn't just the screen that broke but something is causing the whole computer not to boot up at all. Most likely something got fried but I'm not sure what. It's a shame because I really liked that laptop and would like to repair it if possible. Does anyone have any suggestion?

Hello NTHQ,
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your HP notebook powering on.
I have looked for information on your system and I do have a suggestion for you that might be helpful.
You should check and see if you are getting a blink code from the caps lock and num lock keys.
Here is a link explaining the blink codes.
Can you provide your full model and product number?  Here is a link showing how to find that information.
Let me know what happens.

  • [solved] power outage on SSD - can't boot anymore

    Hi,
    I just had a power outage, battery was unplugged. Boot process stops on the rescue prompt.
    The last line of journalctl -xb says :
    Failed at step EXEC spawning /bin/plymouth: no such file or directory, error 2
    My system is installed on a SSD, Crucial M4 250GB.

    Well, I see a lot is beeing said about run levels and systemd. Like many of you, if I had the use of init, I have to learn more about systemd before to be at ease. For the moment I'm still quiet buffled.
    For now, I can give you relevant red or bold lines I find in journalctl -b --full.

    Great clue Lukas...
    One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
    If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
    Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
    Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Power Outage - Apple Cinema Not Turning On

    Hello,
    We had a power outage and after electricity came back I tried to turn on my computer. The G4 starts but somehow my Apple Cinema does not come on (the light does not turn on).
    Any suggestions what I should do to fix it?
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    Unplug the USB and firewire connectors on your monitor cable from the G4. Cycle the power on your computer and hit the power button on your monitor. I think it will now work fine, but it will require you to shut it off/on, like you would for other monitors.
    Works for me. The G4/G5 uses the USB port as the communication link to the monitor to turn it off or on. Take this link out of the loop and the display will work fine, but it will now require your manual control. Take a look at the preferences for the display. With the USB cable plugged in, the options tab is seen. Disconnect the USB and the tab is not there (after a reboot). Hence the USB is more than an extension cord to your monitor sockets, its a remote control for the monitor. Note... Apple care has no knowledge of this. I figured it out by unpluging cables and what'ya know, the monitor came to life!

    I have had and currently do have a similar problem
    with my G4 and Cinema HD display; the power goes out
    and the display does not go on.
    Typically I have simply had to unplug the Power
    Adapter, Firewire, and USB cables, wait a few minute
    and plug it back in and the Cinema display’s light
    comes on , as well as the display. However as of
    yesterday this trick does not work. The G4 does work
    with my old Sony display so does this suggest that
    the video card in the G4 is OK? Could the 90w Power
    adaptor be the problem?
    Ideas?

  • Power outage caused display issue

    we had a power outage that shut off the computer. After unplugging it until the power came back on; we found that when we turned the computer on the display just showed several 4" squares across the screen. The computer seems to have functionality still, but you can't read anything on the screen, it's as if the screen resolution is 7 blocks by 5 on the 20" screen.

    Let's try to fix the other account.
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
    Move these files to the Desktop for now...

  • Contact with laptop, can't boot anymore

    I'm crossing my fingers that someone might know how I can get my computer working again.  I accidentally sat on the screen of my open laptop which was on my couch and that sent the keyboard swinging up which made hard contact with my elbow to the right of the mousepad.  I checked the screen right after and I could move the cursor for a few seconds and then it froze, so I restarted my computer which leaves me at a black screen for maybe half a minute, the Toshiba screen pops up, followed by some code that says something with PCI Family Systems, then I get a boot menu that says:
    HDD/SSD
    CD/DVD HL-DT-ST-CT30F
    FDD
    LAN
    <Enter BIOS Setup>
    My laptop is a Satellite M645 by the way.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  THANKS!!!

    That's not your full model number. It should be on the label on the bottom.
    What happens if you pick "HDD/SSD" from the boot menu?

  • Power Outage caused server crash

    A breaker flipped and caused both our dhcp and zenworks server to go offline. My main concern right now is getting the internet back up and running. I logged into Sles and we're running oes2. I don't know if I need to restart a service or what, but the server is displaying that there is a log file for viewing I assume? Any help is greatly appreciated as I can't solve this problem on my own.
    Thanks,

Good to know where the log file is, I am so accustomed to windows. I have always wanted to learn linux so I guess here's my chance.
    some additional tips:
    One file I also always check after (re)booting a server is the /var/log/boot.msg. The last lines normally show which services were skipped (normal if there is nothing to do or configured for a service) or failed (which is a first indicator if " stuff" isn't working after bootup).
    To get the last lines of that file, use the tail command;
    #tail /var/log/boot.msg
    Another usefull function of that tail command, is to a get a realtime/feed on a file, like the /var/log/messages;
    #tail -f /var/log/messages
    Or you can combine it with grep to only show lines with a specific content, like messages given by dhcpd;
    #tail -f /var/log/messages|grep dhcpd
    Before restarting a service, it's often good to check the current state of a service;
    #service [servicename] status
    (the service command is the same as using rc[servicename] [action], I find it a more logical way to handle services)
    The great thing about Linux is that you can do most things using a ssh console connection. It just takes a little time and practice finding all the (often built in) tools you need/prefer.

We have a PXI 1010 chassis with 2 other cards inside. I also tried it on another computer with an external pxi bus and the same thing happpened. Is the card blown or are we missing something?

  • Inserting DMA causes Petalinux not to boot

    Hello,
    I'm experiencing a problem whenever I try to insert an AXI DMA IP into a Vivado Project: the resulting hdf, when applied to a petalinux project, inhibits the kernel from booting. All I see is a message ("Linux Kernel Starting...") and the system hangs.
    I've noticed that commenting, in the pl.dtsi geneated devicetree file, the following lines which relate to the Axi DMA, the kernel boots without any issue.
    axi_dma_0: dma@40400000 {
    compatible = "xlnx,axi-dma";
    reg = <0x40400000 0x10000>;
    dma-channel@40400000 {
    compatible = "xlnx,axi-dma-mm2s-channel";
    xlnx,datawidth = <0x20>;
    xlnx,device-id = <0x0>; };
    dma-channel@40400030 {
    compatible = "xlnx,axi-dma-s2mm-channel";
    xlnx,datawidth = <0x20>;
    xlnx,device-id = <0x0>;
    Anyone has overcome this issue?

    Yes, I loaded the PL correctly: I inserted a flickering LED connected to the clock to check that the Programmable Logic bitstream was correctly loaded. I think the problem must be somewhere else. PS: even trying to boot the QEMU emulator leads to the boot sequence hanging, and as soon as the DMA is removed from my PL it boots properly. I've also tried with a VDMA and it also boots without any issue.

  • Won't boot anymore but in safe mode

    My laptop won't boot anymore. I get a gray screen with a prohibition sign. Here's what I found so far:
    If I boot in the verbose mode it gets stuck on something like Looking for boot device.
    I zapped the PRAM. Didn't help.
    I can boot in safe mode.
    I used Disk Utility to check the drive and permisions. Everything ok.
    I can't boot from the original Snow Leopard DVD. I press C, the drive spins then stops.
    I reinstalled Snow Leopard from the safe mode. Didn't help.
    In safe mode Safari is crazy slow. Firefox runs full speed.
    Any idea?

    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
    Unless you can boot from your installer DVD there's nothing you can do to reinstall OS X, so I'm not sure how you did reinstall as you said.
    Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Power Outage & iPod

    I had a power outage caused by a sever thunderstorm today around 5:30 pm and as soon as the power came on. I connected the iPod and iTunes ran a test on it and a message saying”iTunes has detected a corrupted iPod the IPod has to be reformatted to be used by iTunes” then another message after clicking ok said”there was problem downloading the iPod software “iPod” the request resource was not found" and right now it’s current state is frozen is there a way this can be fixed?.

    Hi weatherscience!
    Have you first tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
    First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times. (be sure to leave it on the white side of the switch, which is the Off position)
    Next, press and hold the Menu and center buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
    You might need to try this several times. Also, attempt this step both while connected to your computer's USB port, and disconnected.
    Try restoring your iPod in iTunes again. Do you still get that "requested resource" error?
    If so, then let's try forcing your iPod into disk mode. For instructions on how to do that, see this Knowledge Base article:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
    Also, if that doens't seem to be helping, you could try all of the five iPod troubleshooting steps, here:
    The Five Rs
    Any success?

  • Re: Satellite C850 won't boot anymore - broken HDD

    Hello Folks,
    I bought a *Toshiba Satellite C850 - 1F2* with *+Windows 8+*.
    After installing, upgrading to *+Windows 8.1+* and setting up everything, the whole machine worked pretty fine.
    BUT since yesterday the laptop won't boot anymore!
    When I turn it on, the HDD makes click and click and the system tries to boot from DVD, from USB, from HDD, from IPV4, from IPV6 and then it says, that there is no bootable device.
    Unfortunately I wanted to make the +Windows 8 Restoration-/Rescue-DVDs+ this weekend!
    Huh!!!
    Well, I still have an *+original Windows-7-DVD and license+*, which would be good as well (I used it the last years).
    *YET*, I cannot install *+Windows 7+*.
    It says something like that, that +this system is not available for Secure Boot+.
    I read about "Secure Boot".
    So I pressed F2, turned the laptop on and could with this reach the BIOS.
    It is a *+InsydeH20 Rev. 3.7+*.
    *BUT*, when I go to "Boot Mode" I can only see, that this option is greyed and I cannot change from +UEFI Boot+ to +CSM Boot+.
    Even the change of the HDD made no difference.
    I put in my old HDD with Windows 7 installed (wich works in the other laptop), but the system won't boot, for it is +not suitable for Secure Boot+.
    *So, WHAT NOW?*
    I mean, it cannot really be the Toshiba politics, that you need to throw away your laptop, if the HDD breaks, can it?
    For I didn't create the Rescue-DVD, I have just my Windows 7 DVD and another HDD with installed Windows 7.
    Do I need to buy another Windows 8 licence and another HDD, to install Windows 8 (suitable for Secure Boot) again?
    Would it even work like that?
    Or is there any chance to upgrade the BIOS, for that I can then change from UEFI Boot to CSM Boot?
    Or is there any other chance, to use my other HDD with Windows 7, or at least a new clean HDD, on wich I then can install my Windows 7 OS?
    I hope, that someone can give me any good advice, what to do now ... without throwing the Toshiba laptop away ;)
    Thanks in advance!

    If the HDD died, in needs to be replaced.
    If notebook is still covered by warranty, the HDD will be replaced free of charge. If warranty isnt valid, you will need to pay for the new HDD.
    I think this understandable.
    _Now some facts about the Recovery disk._
    If you did not create a recovery disk in the past, you could order the recovery medium on this page: http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
    The recovery disk would install the Toshiba image and would set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.
    _Regarding the Win 7 installation:_
    Usually to install the non UEFI capable system, the secure boot needs to be disabled and boot mode needs to be set to CSM mode.
    If this isnt possible you should update the BIOS but to do that you need an running Windows system (Win 8).
