Power-plug light ring LED - always green?

Ok, here is a really dumb question, but something I noticed.
I have an iBook G3 Dual usb. Full specs at bottom.
When ever I plug it into power, the ring lights up green. My friend has a power book. when he plugs his in, his lights up orange when it is charging and green when it is done and using AC power. Mine is always lit of green regardless if the battery is charging, the battery is full, or even if there is no battery installed.
Shouldn't my plug light up orange when it is changing as well? It seems all the power books, newer iBooks, and all modern apple laptops like the MacBook and MacBook pro all do this - so why is mine left behind?
I bought this second handed, so I asked the original owner if it was the ORIGINAL battery and ORIGINAL charger that came with the iBook when she bought it. She said everything is all original. I then told her about this and she said it has always lit of green that she could remember of and never knew about the orange/changing state.
So whats going on? is there a way to enable this "feature" or has this power adapter or battery been defective since day one?
Other the that it works fine. It charges fine, and battery lasts around an hour. This isn't something I'm going to run out and buy new just because it dosn't light up the color I want, I am just simply asking if this is normal for these older iBooks.
Thanks for any info anyone can provide!
-Scott

nope, that didn't do it. I have reset the PMU many times when troubleshooting all my other problems, but I just tried it again, but still no help.
I'm not going to worry about it, as it seems to operate just fine (remember the original owner used it this way for 7 years and it worked fine then)
I just wasn't sure if the G3 iBooks did this or not. But I guess they do, and mine just has a "bug," oh well.
I'll leave the question open in case anyone else wanted to share there experiences regarding this.
Thanks

  • Satellite L455 - Power plug and battery LEDs on and it flashing orange

I have a Satellite L455 that has been working perfectly for over six months now but from two weeks ago it started behaving strangely.
I switched off the machine normally in the evening as I was going to sleep. In the morning when I switched it on it powered on, HDD and Power On Leds blinked blue for a few seconds then they went off. Machine did not boot. I tried to switch it on again and it did the same thing. Then I saw the 'power plug on' and 'Battery On' Leds flashing orange at the same time. I unplugged the power adapter. The two leds were still flashing but machine will not power up. I removed the battery for a bout 5 minutes then reinserted it and the machine worked fine the whole day.
I switched it off removed the power plug and in the morning still it would not boot until when I removed the battery for a few minutes then it works again. The battery is charging fine as when I remove it and reinsert it even without plugging power cable still fires up and perfectly works.
Then I removed the battery and the power plug and pressed the power button for thirty seconds to discharge the machine and then put back power and battery and it worked until I switched off again and removed power then it did not come on again.
If I just shut down machine and I dont switch off power plug then I can switch back on and work with the machine with no hassle even for three days continuously.
What could be wrong? Any help will really be appreciated.
    Regards
    Yusuf

    Hi chidzungo,
This must be definitely a hardware malfunction but its strange why it appears every day after you have shut down the notebook. Do you use original Toshiba AC/DC adapter and battery? Have you connected external devices to your notebook? If yes remove them before you turn on your notebook.
What BIOS version is installed at the moment? You should look on Toshiba website for an update. BIOS update could also help and its worth a try.
Before you start the BIOS update read the BIOS update instructions [HERE|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=60]
Satellite L455 seems to be an US model so the BIOS update can be downloaded on Toshiba US page but check the exact part number first:

  • Power adaptor light flashing orange to green

starting this morning my power adaptor seems to have an issue. the light keeps flashing back and forth bewteen orange and green. and therefore the computer wont really charge. it will operate plugged in this way though.
last week part of my cord did get damaged. the little bumpy part right next to the plug that goes into the computer. the first little bump of the three somehow came off. there does not seem to be a hole or tear in the cord under where it was though.
what purpose does that section serve? is that what is causing my problem?
    any ideas?
my computer is one year and one month old, grrrr no longer under waranty...
    ~ michelle

    Hi Michelle,
Given the sloppy design of the iBook, including its power adapter, I would suggest you bite the bullet and buy a new adapter. Otherwise your iBook's DC board may be damaged.
Resetting the PMU helps, as does unplugging both ends of the pwr adapter, waiting for at least 1 minute and plugging it back in. BUT, since you're sure the cable is broken, GET A NEW ONE!
I had a similar problem with my power adapter for my 3-month old iBook, except that the light would suddenly not turn green at all. The cord and the rest of the adapter were intact. I was lucky I still had 7 months of warranty left and got a new adapter from Apple. So far everything is ok.
    Good luck, Michelle!

    Hi,
I purchased Huawei Dongle and trying to connect with my new MacBook Pro (OS- Mountain Lion) USB port 3.0 but unfortunately it does not support.
When I plugged in my macbook the power is flowing in dongle due green light blinking twice in every 3 sec but no connection found or diver shown.
Please let me know how I have to use it. I got some suggestion for USB hub 2.0 but It does not make any sense and driver installation.
So please suggest proper direction to use it and provide link to install any driver.
    Thanks
    Tauheed Ahmad

Yes Clinton I did same, but they were (Huawei customer support) surprised about this problem, They behave like they have no idea about USB 2.0 and  3.0 knowledge. They handsUp that reason I posted my problem in this forum.
So is there any better solution to use any mediator between these USB version handling, Please let me know.
    Thanks

    Hello cass528,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air would not power on.  I recommend following the steps in this article when experiencing an issue like this:

  • Battery's not charging, LED's always green

A couple of days ago my adapter stopped charging my battery. The LED is always green. Battery is the original one, and worked fine (until now as it is completly empty).
    Tried the following alreday:
    - shutting off and restarting
    - Used a different adapter
    - resetted my PMU
    - Battery update is not necessary for my powerbook
    PowerBook G4, 1.67 Ghz, 15" Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Sorry to hear about your charging problem. There are 3 potential fault areas: 1) Power adapter, 2) Battery, 3) logic board (sometimes the dc-in board). Since you've tried another working (it was working?) adapter, you rule out number 1. Number 2 is academic at the moment. Which leaves a logic board issue. The dc-in board has the power socket attached to it, and is replaceable on it's own, versus replacing the entire logic board.
If you system is still under warranty, take it in for repair. If the system is not under warranty, you might take it in to get an estimate - don't know if your local Apple center would replace just the dc-in board or would insist on an entire logic board replacement.
Used dc-in boards run around $90-$100 (see http://pbparts.com or http://www.ifixit.com - ifixit also has directions on how to replace it, see http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/ - not for the feint of heart or inexperienced).

  • Green LED always off when iSight is in use

    Hello,
I have a 15'' MacBook Pro since June. The green LED next to the iSight -almost- never works when I am using the camera either with Photo Booth or the Mirror widget.
I said 'almost' because I remember that it lit up during the first startup of the computer when it wanted to take a picture of me.
Then it was always off for several days.
Then I installed the Mirror widget and started playing with it, activating, deactivating it, and then once I started Photo Booth and - surprise!- the green LED went on.
A few minutes later it went off. I could reproduce the same procedure a few times (open the mirror widget and play with it, e.g. change the resolution, and the LED went back on). That trick is not very reproducible and the LED always turns off after a while. I have not been able to turn it back on for weeks.
    Otherwise the camera works fine.
What could be wrong? Software? Hardware? Any idea?

Yes, that is puzzling. I can't say what could be happening with yours, but we tried five Macbook pros at a meeting today and none behaved like yours. All showed the light whether the AC adapter was connected or not. We tried Photo Booth, iChat and iMovie.
    Have you run Hardware Test?

take a dry toothbrush to the gold contacts both male and female on the connector and retest.
Sounds like you have a damaged connector or a damage in the DC cord.
Go to the apple store and use a DIFFERENT adapter for 10 seconds, that will immediately tell you the SOURCE of the fault.

  • MacBook Pro 17" power adapter lights orange when NOT plugged into laptop.

My MacBook Pro power adapter lights up orange even though it is not plugged into a device. When I do plug it into my laptop it remains the same and does not charge. Due to this my laptop is now dead. What does this orange light mean?

You should take both your MBP(Macbook Pro) and your power adapter to an Apple Genius bar or an AASP(Authorized Apple Service Provider) for a free evaluation. This is a strange occurance, and it seems that it may be a hardware malfunction.
Make an appointment so you don't have to wait too long.

  • HT3205 My adapter plug light is orange - won't stay green to charge the battery.  What is the cause?

My adapter light does not stay green to indicate the macbook is charging.  The light turns from green to orange after about 5 seconds.  Why is my battery not charging?

    1. SMC reset
    >>Instructions to reset SMC
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc.  If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
    Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

  • Macbook pro is not getting turn on and further when i press power button the green orange light suddenly changes to green again, moreover battery meter is not working

    Hi
Last night my macbook pro gets off automatically when battery gets empty and in the morning it isn't turning on. When i connect the charger, the light on the charger turns green to orange (showing that it is charging) but when i press the power button it suddenly changes to green again. I thought there must not be any connection between the charger light and the power button. And battery meter was running fine.
When it tried this again and again the charger light disappear and battery meter also stops working, when i clearly observe it there is a very dim green light in the charger (not observable in the light) and the laptop is still not showing any change.
    please help!

  • My battery isn't charging, and when I unplug my power cord, it immediately dies.  There is an "X" inside the battery icon, and the power cord light is green...how can I fix this?

    Hi,
I bought a Macbook Pro last February, and this is the first time this issue has occurred.  My computer has been working fine, but this morning the battery icon is showing a big "X" through it, and when I unplug my power cord, the computer shuts off.  Also, the power cord light is green, which I take to mean that it can't be charged anymore.  How can I fix this?
    Thanks!!

I had similar issue with one of the macbooks in the office. Make sure you've got latest firmware installed (run Software Update). This resolved the issue for us instantly (you may need to reboot mac AFTER firmware upgrade for this to work).

It was working well last evening.
Also the power supply light is flashing red and green! What can I do?? Pls help.

You have to take the MBP with the MagSafe charger to the Apple Store
as soon as possible. You may need  a new charger.
