Power Port (apple genuis are stupid)

sO I've had this running problem for almost 2 **** years. When I use the computer while it is plugged in, it only takes power from the battery and won't charge while I use it, and it charges slow, real slow.
OK, bought iBook Sept 05, by Spring it was messing up, I call, guy says "batteries wear out" even though I didn't use it every day. Whatever, didn't help me, later, after having it a year, go to Apple store and they say "battery problem." I call, do all this crap on it for two hours, still the same. I read a thread on here and a guy had the SAME problem and they replaced the port and he was good. I tell Apple over the phone, in person, they keep saying it's the battery.
After spending two hours there one time, they don't know jack, they just replace the ipod if it's under warranty and don't really know what is wrong with it. My latest episode, they reinstalled OSX for me, now I can't access my iPhoto from an email or anything, I go in and the guy doesn't really know what to do and the other guy that helps me is a D-Bag
Now, all I need is my **** port fixed. When I get to 0%, it shuts off and I can't use it, which ***** cause I need it everyday for school. I've tried other chargers, resetting the PMD, or whatever. I just want the thing fixed before the warranty runs out.
I need serious help, I can't affor for it to go down again at the end of the quarter when I'm doing a project
Josh

It is not entirely clear what is going on with your computer, but it is clear that you haven't been helped and that your issue needs to be resolved before your Applecare runs out.
One thing you need to do is to get a case number. This is very important to do, because it will document that the problem you are having first occurred under warranty. As long as you can document that the problem first occurred under warranty, Apple will honor the warranty and fix the problem under warranty, even after the warranty runs out.
Offhand, it sounds like you may have a problem with the DC In Board, which is what you plug the power adaptor into. Your computer should run just fine with the power adaptor plugged in and the battery removed. It obviously does not. It sounds like you have reset the PMU. It does not sound like anyone you've contacted at Apple has been able to diagnose the problem.
Call Apple again and explain your problem, and put the emphasis on the fact that your power adaptor--and even a known good power adaptor, will not run your computer. If they ask about the battery, tell them that there seems to be a problem charging it. Ask for and insist on getting a case number. If you run into any difficulty with the person who answers the phone, ask to talk to Apple Customer Relations and explain your problem to them.
Good luck!

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • How Repair Loose Battery Power Port?

The power port on my daughter's 12" G4 Al PowerBook is either loose or bent. She has tested the power adapter on other computers and it works. Definitely the port is loose or bent internally rather than the adapter. She has to hold the adapter against the computer to get it to connect to charge.
Is it possible to open the laptop so as to reach the internal port's location and see if it can be repaired?
If so, how open it with what tools?
Don't mess with it and just take it to an Apple Store? It's not under warranty any longer. 3 years old.
    Other procedure?
    Thanks

    Richard -
If you signed up for Applecare, they might take care of it. If not, check out iFixit.
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/catalog/
They'll let you know what the part's in stock ( you're looking for the DC-in board, by the way ) and they have very discernable photographic repair manuals.
Be forewarned though, this isn't an amazingly easy fix. While it's just a matter of swapping out the DC card, there are plenty of things that can go wrong on the way to it. However, if you have some basic practice with electronics and computers, it's nothing you can't handle. Just be carefull when you remove the keyboard, it's easy to break the ribbon wire.
    best of luck.

  • Macbook Pro 2012 Retina Won't Start, burnt power pins on power port, digital artist dead in the water

After a year of owning my macbook pro late 2012 retina model, it started having difficulty charging, it wouldn't charge even when green on the magsafe, and had difficulty turning orange, basically right after the 1 year warranty was over by one month, I went into the apple store and they told me that I simply needed to replace the power adapter and cord and it would be fine, but that it most likely was caused by me plugging it into a power strip, and that I had to plug it directly into the wall in its own power slot, which they never said that was what you were supposed to do when I purchased the laptop and could not find it anywhere in the literature. It was fine in the store for the apple worker, but after even just a few months I had to to constantly twist and unplug and replug the magsafe adapter from different angles just to get it to work, and it was like a living ****, as I am a digital artist and my wacom tablet will not work until my macbook pro is charging and the magsafe is orange, so everyday I would waste 30 minutes to an hour with the finicky magsafe, until recently my macbook pro will not turn on at all.
Since the problem arose after warranty I had to pay out of pocket for the replacement magesafe cord, which was a temporary solution, I pointed out that the magsafe power port on the laptop itself also had burn marks just like the magsafe cord that had a few pins pushed in and was slightly blackened but the attendant ignored that and said it was fine and just swapped out the cord. The "genius" attendant claimed if I just plugged in the macbook pro directly into the wall, everything would be fine and back to normal, and I did just that, I never plugged it into a power strip ever again, and still we arrive to my current predicament.
I believe I have to repair the actual power port the magsafe plugs into on the laptop, and get a new magsafe cord all over again, but it will be much more expensive than simply swapping out a cord this time, and I don't think the reason this happened to begin with has been truly identified, and I'm worried I have to make this repair every year, and I can't afford this kind of planned obsolescence, and I thought I was getting the best laptop in the world, and it was, everything was perfect not one single problem, except for this power issue, which now won't even allow me to use the computer at all and is now a giant paper weight, and leaves a dirty taste in my mouth when it comes to apple products.
I live in San Francisco in a house that was built around 1910 and don't know much about what or when renovations were made for power, but I have a feeling some kind of incorrect voltage is happening, and I was never instructed on this, and every other macbook is fine, my roommates have earlier models like the 2007 and 2009 MacBooks and have no problem like mine.
    Please help me

I don't understand why and how the red light in the audio jack is still on while the computer is totally off, not connected to any power source and the battery seems to be empty... how is taht possible?
Because the battery is not empty, something is messed up, likley the SMC.
All I can advise is doing a SMC Reset, which resets the power firmware in case it got messed up and hopefully that will charge the battery up like normal.
If you can't do it or it doesn't work tommorow after charging up (turned off) overnight then just take it to Apple.

  • MacBook magsafe (power) port doesn't look right

I'm coming to the realization that what I thought was a bad-power-adapter problem is actually something worse. About two months ago I replaced my previous power adapter (a MagSafe "T"-style) because I'd been having flakiness problems when trying to charge my MacBook (early 2008 13", model 4,1) -- it would sometimes refuse to recognize that the charger was plugged in (continuing to operate from battery while the indicator light on the end of the adapter stayed dark), and other times that indicator light would remain green, even with a mostly-drained battery, and the Battery Status in the menu would read "Battery Is Not Charging".
Anyway, I replaced the adapter and am starting to have the same problems -- and I've tried other adapters too, that I know work, with the problem still recurring.  So I looked at the other end of the matter: my MacBook's power port.  And aha!  I see something odd. Looking not at the pin-sockets themselves but the large rectangular area around it, I see some grey stuff which at first I think is accumulated crud, causing contact problems because it's covering up the metal surface.  But after a little poking at it I realized it's not coming off easily... and hey, is that surface *supposed* to be metal?  A couple of image searches on google seems to show it should be grey colored, so maybe in fact that "crud" is actually all that's left of a partly worn-away coating! Maybe my problem is actually that that exposed metal is causing some kind of grounding problem?
So I'm not sure what's going on.  Should I in fact get that grey stuff out of there? Should I leave it, and find a way to cover up the rest of the metal, like with electricians' tape?  Any advice is eagerly appreciated!
Edited to add the photo I forgot the first time:

    Hi minimidgy,
    welcome to macbook forum.
open your system preference > display and check if your resolution is the same as your brothers macbook, it goes also with the color depth (thousand or million) and refresh rate.
You can click on Color tab and choose the same display profile as other macbook, or you can calibrate your lcd to match it by click on calibrate button and follow the instruction there.
    Good Luck.

I have followed all relevant steps, my iPhone5 and apple TV are connected to the same wireless network, but I still cannot use airplay. When I choose the airplay option on my phone, the only option I get is "iPhone"

Welcome to the Apple Community Willy.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • I have two Apple IDs and when I got an Iphone 6, only the apps from one Apple ID are on the phone. How do I get my other apps on there?

I (stupidly) have two Apple IDs and when I got an Iphone 6, only the apps from one Apple ID are on the phone. How do I get my other apps (from my old Iphone 4) on my new Iphone? Thanks

You can use the same appleid that you purchased the apps with on the phone for the App store. Settings> iTunes & App Store and continue to use the other id for everything else allowing you to have access to your previously purchased apps. You can then either sync or download the apps without paying for them again.
It can be quite handy having two appleids - it can be quite useful if you can manage them correctly. One id for the store and one for imessage is good for privacy if you have the same id in use on another device.

  • My X1 Carbon's power port broke - is it safe to use it, and can it be fixed?

The small piece of plastic which seems to protect some pins in the centre of my X1 Carbon's power port broke off, and I'm worried about, well, what I should worry about. For illustration, the piece I'm talking about is the one in the middle of the port here: http://i.imgur.com/FMrpSIo.jpg
I can push it back into the port temporarily as I've done for the photo, but when I plug in my power cable then unplug it, it comes off in the tip of the power cable, and I'm worried about losing it as I almost did today.
It looks like this http://i.imgur.com/3anYfZA.jpg when the plastic plug is removed, and this http://i.imgur.com/CVwBbm7.jpg is what the bottom of the plug (broken end) looks like. From these, I'm guessing that it's there either to protect the pins from breaking, prevent them from touching each other, or both. So my questions are twofold:
    1. What's the danger here? Is it just the pins breaking/bending (I'm not too concerned about this; I always keep my laptop in a sleeve/case), or could something be shorted out/my computer blow up if things go wrong and the pins touch? Is it safe to continue using my computer?
    2. Is there any way to fix this? I can only think of trying to glue it back in, but there are so many little pins around there I'm worried I'd mess something up doing so, not to mention that the piece itself is tiny. My laptop is out of warranty, and while I'd be okay with paying to have the power port replaced, looking at the hardware maintenance manual it seems like the entire system board would have to be replaced? I don't know how much this would cost, but I assume it'd be more than it's worth...

When I want to get on my wifi I tap my wifi in settings but it just loads and says unable to connect. It wont let me sign in. All my family's apple products are working. Why is this happening?

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Magnetic power port

This may sound like a dumb question, but the magnet in the power port - won't that slowly over time erase or fragment the hard-drive? Maybe the magnet is small enough?

I remember when my mom brought in a toasted HD from work (that her employer let her have) back in the 80's. It was a single platter (12" I think), but what I noted was that the case closed shut with the most powerful permanent magnet I've ever seen less than an inch from the edge of the platter.
My only criticism of the MagSafe connector is that it's too small; it should be longer so that it's easier to pull off with my fingers. As it is now, I just tilt the connector and then it gently pries off. I heard some of the frayed cable problems could be due to people yanking the thing by the wire near the connector. I get the sense that tripping over the cable isn't so bad, since the tension is distributed over the length of the cable, while yanking it near the connector concentrates tension at the weakest point.
I asked an Apple Store employee about the 85W version for the MacBook Pro (labelled as compatible with the MacBook), and he said that it might not be as good for the battery. Something about the increased current output shortening the life of the battery when charging. I've heard similar stuff about fast battery chargers for AAs and cell phones, so he could be right, or could be giving me a line of BS.

  • Second Drive Bay Power Port Bad?

I am trying to install a second drive into my PPC G5 but it is not recognized. I realized that the power cable setup for the second SATA drive bay is bad at the port. I plugged the power cable from the First Dive bay into the port on the motherboard for the second Drive Bays power and nothing. It wouldnt boot. I am pretty certain the port for the Second Drive Bay Power is bad on the motherboard. Is there anything I can do other than having this replaced?

I assume you double checked the new drive as working on the known good power port. I have had a DOA from time to time. As the port for the bay comes out of the logic board I would also assume that it would not be worth replacing the logic board (unless you are handy yourself and could spot and fix a micro or a macro crack.
The other possibility is to pull a copy of your machine's service manual and see how the drive power was routed. Which exact PowerMac model is yours? I have a quad and I am pretty sure the power connectors plug into the bottom end of the board. I guess what I am getting at is this. You will want to double check that the board's port itself is bad by testing the PS/s output at the mains. Maybe you will get lucky and find out that the PS is the culprit not hte board as some models of G5/s have PS recalls on them. I have late 2005 and know I have a service manual on mine somewhere on a drive. Other wise Google your board and see how the power is channeled.
