Power settings not sticking
When I make changes to the power settings they keep resetting back to what they were originally. This happened after I did Toshiba recommended updates via the Service Station. I have tried creating a custom power plan based on an existing one, but those changes revert back to whatever plan it was based on, too. Looking for any ideas. Maybe Toshiba has a program installed that I don't know about that is reverting the settings.
Sounds like a good strategy. Here are a couple of others.
1. You might do a System Restore to a point prior to the problem. That will affect only programs installed after the restore point.
Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore
2. You might see what happens after a clean boot. Something loading automatically with Windows may cause the problem.
1. Open the System Configuration utility (msconfig.exe). You can do that by typing msconfig at the Start screen and pressing Enter.
2. On the Services tab, set the Hide all Microsoft services check box and then click Disable all.
3. On the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager, right-click and disable each Startup item. Then close Task Manager.
4. Back on the System Configuration screen, click OK, and restart the computer.

Mail port settings not sticking
I'm having trouble with port settings not sticking in mac mail. When I start Mac Mail (v5.1, running in Lion) the program won't read mail in my iCloud account because the port settings are incorrect (port 143). I click on the "Use SSL" box, which changes the port setting to 993. I save the changes and everything works fine until I quit and restart the program. The port settings revert to 143 and the SSL box is unchecked. The issue, obviously, is that the changed settings are not being saved. I deleted the iCloud IMAP account and reinstalled. It reinstalled with the correct 993 SSL setting, but as soon as I quit the program and restarted, it reverted to 143, no SSL. Anyone have an idea what is going on?
To solve the problem of mail port seetings not sticking required deleting the Accounts.plist in this mail directory:

Safe mode display settings not 'sticking' after restart?
Hi
I used a display setting not supported by my Mac mini and consequently had a 'out of signal' error on my monitor and restarted in safe mode, logged in and altered the settings.
When I restart the display settings do not 'stick' and I get the same error. How do I get the settings to stick? Have tried logging in as administrator and user with no joy!
Thanks NigelHmm. Maybe that combination of changing resolution in Safe mode and resetting PRAM have a combined effect of some kind? Worth remembering for the future. Thanks for posting.

Adobe customization settings not "sticking"
Hi
We are using ProSystem's PDFlyer program. Acrobat settings does not "stick" within the program. We tested adding other toolbar elements to quick tools, and changing Acrobat Preferences in the Edit
> Preferences menu, and none of the customizations we made were still active the next time we re-opened Acrobat.
Other customizations within the PDFlyer program work just fine.
Thanks in advance!Hello community,
it's amazing that the longstanding problem seems to stay down to the present day and neither Adobe nor admins found a solution for that. :-(
My plain intention was to enable enhanced security, preconfigure trust and lock down all settings. The best way would be to create a patched and transformed msi package of Adobe Reader 9 which can be deployed by Windows group policys. After applying the msp to the msi file I opened the msi in Adobe Customization Wizard 9 and made the desired modifications, in particular by adding a recursive folder in Privileged Locations Exempt. The test setup ran without any problems. To verify the modifications in Reader I checked it under "Edit / Preferences / Security (Enhanced)" and wondered why the exempt list still was empty.
In the Adobe "Enhanced Security and Trusted Locations" Guide there is specified where the enhanced security settings are stored in Windows Registry. At least the Privileged Locations Exempt entries should be stored in HKCU. I checked this up in registry of my test installation and found these entries in HKLM instead. So it seems that Adobe Reader would ignore these entries and it is expected that all settings are stored in HKCU indeed. But in that case the settings are only recognized if the user's interface is not locked down.
So my questions are: Did anybody managed it? How is it possible keep preconfigured settings and lock down user's interface of Enhanced Security Settings at the same time? Is it better to avoid using Customization Wizard and deploy the settings via reg files instead?
Any responses would be appreciated.

IPhone Settings Not Sticking in iTunes
My iPhone settings are not "sticking" in iTunes. Also, all of my contacts have duplicates in iPhone and Entourage. However, they are fine in Address Book. I wanted to simply write over the database on the iPhone, but I can't get that to work.
Is this a corrupt preference file of some kind? How do I fix it?I would recommend removing iTunes and Quicktime (and the Apple driver) and reinstalling it.
As for overwriting the iPhone, you can reset the sync history and check "PC overwrites iPhone" in the advanced section of the Info Tab in iTunes. -
I work in IT and many of our Windows 7 Prof SP1 32-bit PCs are suddenly unable to have their User Account Control settings changed (they get stuck at 'never notify'), and therefore, are not prompted for an Admin password when installing new software.
When I try to change this setting, logged on using my personal admin account, i can change it but on restart, the changes have not stuck. If the user tries to change it, when clicking on the "change user account control settings" the screen
blinks and does nothing.
If I run a command line (my account has elevated rights as administrator)
net user administrator /active:yes
then
net user administrator *
newpassword
then restart the PC as local user administrator, it says "the user account is currently disabled and cannot be used to log on."
I have run the "fixit_kb978591.diagcab" and it didn't detect any problems.
THANK YOU for any tips moving forward!!Yes, I can verify that our copy of Windows 7 is Genuine!
I ran that command but the UAC settings are still not sticking when I change them.
* Staff have a multitude of issues all would seem to relate to their access on the PCs, such as unable to use new fonts as a standard user, when they have to be installed as local Admin, or running photoshop as a standard user, or being prompted for the
admin password when trying to install using a standard account.
This problem hasn't always existed.
We are using Novell, ZENworks and Sophos - not sure if these play a role? -

Network settings not sticking?
Noob (Win convert) question, I think.
Leopard 10.5 with DHCP enabled on my home and work networks. All settings from the DHCP servers come across and are correct in the Network prefernces. But, when I open the Network preferences panel and select Advanced - then add a new DNS server, and then add a WINS server, and also change the workgroup from "blank" to WORKGROUP. I do an apply, go back in to verify the settings and all that remains is the new DNS server I added. The WINS entries are gone as is the WORKGROUP. I tried doing this several different ways all having the same result. If I don't hit the apply button, it's all there, but once it applies, it disappears and I can't make the settings stick.
Thanks and apologies to all if this issue is know (I searched but found nada in these forums).Nelmedia wrote:
Thx for the quick reply Nerowolfe...
I did do as you said and a few other ways also in trying to troubleshoot this, but it still doesn't save the settings. Setting the lock on does no good since the settings disappear after the "Apply" button is pressed. You have to "Apply" before you lock.
Very confusing....
I'm an old *nix guy, so I thought I'll just shell in and change the files manually. Did that, but if I opened Network Prefernces again and changed anything, it reverted the files back.
Very, very confusing....
I have only one setting - in DNS - but it stays there. I never used WINS.
You might see if you can do it with another user with admin privs as a test.
Also if you haven't, run DU and check the HD and repair permissions.
Barring that, you may have a corrupted .plist that needs trashing. Sometimes the preference file for a group of settings gets corrupted and by dragging it to the desktop the system creates a new one. This could work, but there are not guarantees.
The .plist files are in User->Library->Preferences. I don't know of a good list of which plist goes with which preferences other than that the names are sometimes (but not always) helpful

[solved][laptop-mode-tools] hard drive power settings not applied
I've used the laptop-mode-tools now for quite some time. However, recently the power management settings are not applied anymore. Possibly since updating to systemd...
My laptop-mode.conf looks as follows:
CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=1
# Power management for HD (hdparm -B values)
BATT_HD_POWERMGMT=254
LM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT=254
NOLM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT=254
However, even after doing a systemctl restart laptop-mode-tools.service I always get
$ sudo hdparm -B /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
APM_level = 96
Setting it manually works:
$ sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254)
APM_level = 254
$ sudo hdparm -B /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
APM_level = 254
Of course, the settings are lost upon rebooting in this case.
Any idea where the problem could be?
Last edited by rggjan (2012-10-08 12:25:04)I apologize if it is bad style to answer to a post marked as [solved] but:
Same problem here!
HDParm-settings are not applied on boot by LMT.
laptop-mode.conf:
# Should laptop mode tools control the hard drive power management settings?
# Set to 0 to disable
CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT="auto"
# Power management for HD (hdparm -B values)
BATT_HD_POWERMGMT=100
LM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT=200
NOLM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT=254
# hdparm -B /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
APM_level = 96
Any ideas or solutions on this so far?
And why is this post marked as 'solved'?
edit:
1.) manual set hdparm-settings survive reboot but not suspend!
2.) no difference between CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT="auto" or "1"
3.)
# systemctl status laptop-mode
laptop-mode.service - Laptop Mode Tools
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/laptop-mode.service; enabled)
Active: active (exited) since Do 2013-01-24 14:05:20 CET; 8min ago
Process: 664 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/laptop_mode init auto (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
4.) pointed out that this seems to be a bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33262 as systemd does not restore apm values on wake up.

Finder window settings not "sticking" after restart (boot drive only)
I have an annoying problem with the finder window only on the boot drive not holding whatever settings (list view) I give it after a restart. Odd part of it is that it reverts to some old settings I had at one time in icon view. When I switch back to list view I get a view with the library folder opened. I figure there is some corrupt setting somewhere, I deleted the desktop db for that folder with no luck. I have no problem on any other drives.
Thanks for any help,

navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and trash these two files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

Slideshow settings not 'sticking'
Hi All,
Have a lot trouble with newly downloaded iPhoto 9.1.1. Specifically, when working with slideshow, settings for individual photos are not being saved.
For example: I select specific 'Ken Burns' settings—zoom settings for instance—for an individual image. They remain as set until an indeterminate amount of time and then are lost. I might be editing the settings for the sixth image in the slideshow before noticing that the settings for the second image have reverted.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
STry trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

All,
I've got a strange issue. I have a policy set up that has a proxy server set under /User Config/Windows Settings/Internet Explorer Maintenance/Connection/Proxy Settings. That works fine. However, I'm trying to add some local web resources into the exceptions field and none of them seem to be taking.
An example of one would be library.mydomain.org, where that domain name is merely an entry in our internal DNS server and not accessible from the outside. However, even with the policy applied, the browser is still trying to use the proxy server and ignoring the exceptions I set. I can't confirm whether those exception are in the control panel since the users associated with the policy are very locked down.
However, I have a seperate policy for other users in which the exceptions work perfectly fine. Could the policy be corrupt?
Also, and this is a throw in question, how do you all create your policies? I find using console 1 to be an extremely irritating and slow process. It takes up to a minute from when I close the group policy window until I get control of console 1 back. Are there any other methods for policy editing?
Thanks in advance.Originally Posted by imc

Customization Wizard - Security Settings Not Sticking
Hi,
I'm trying to create a transform file to role out the Adobe Reader 9 msi file. I am using the Adobe Customization Wizard 9 and I can tell it is working to a degree as removing items from the Help menu work.
However, the main reason I want to use it is to add domains to the 'Privileged Locations Exempt from Enhanced Security' option. I have added two domains in here and checked the option to allow 'External Content' and 'Silent Printing'. However, when I run the msi with the transform file the application installs, but the Edit - Preferences - Security (Enhanced) doesn't show the domains I have added.
If I open the transform file in Notepad I can see the domains in there, so I know it's saving okay. But I think there must be some option I'm missing to enable them.
Any help much appreciated.

Ever since upgrading to snow leopard, I've had problems with fonts on my mac. Mainly, it's a case of
I have a decent number of fonts -- most of which are "disabled". The problem is every so often,
(usually after rebooting), all of my fonts get re-enabled. This gets annoying, as you can imagine,
and causes significant slowdowns in some cases.
One problem is that often, my terminal window (one of my more used apps) launches and literally
can't see the font I've told it to use, so it uses Lucida Grande (and looks crappy). The only way to get
the fonts to be "visible" again is to load font book and wait for it to process my fonts.
Has anybody else seen this problem with this and know of a solution?he general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion (don't just disable) of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.
An additional measure is to clear the existing font caches:
http://www.macworld.com/article/139383/2009/03/fontcacheclear.html
That said, 10.6.2 release notes have this to say about fonts:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874
Fonts fixes provided for:
• an issue with font spacing
• an issue in which some Fonts are missing
• font duplication issues
• an issue with some PostScript Type 1 fonts not working properly
