i have black spaces on the sides of the viewing screen. how do i get rid of them?
also, can i adjust the pictures i have already taken to delete them?

It sounds like you just need to adjust the aspect ratio for your images. The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width to the height of your images. We measure it in pixels, but it works in inches and centimeters, too. If you make prints, you want to select an aspect ratio comes closest matching the aspect ratio of the print you want.
Here's how to adjust the aspect ratio in your camera:
You can change the width to height ratio of an image.
Aspect Ratio
The same aspect ratio as HD TVs, used for displaying on wide-screen HD TVs.
The same aspect ratio as 35mm film, used for printing out 5 x 7 in. or postcard sized images.
The same aspect ratio as the screen of this camera, used for printing images on 3.5 x 5 in. to various A-sized papers.
A square-shaped aspect ratio.
An aspect ratio commonly used for portraits.
* Only available on the PowerShot S100
The aspect ratio for () and () images is fixed at ().
The digital zoom and digital tele-converter are only available in the () aspect ratio since [Digital Zoom] is fixed to [Off] in all other ratios.
You can also set the camera so that turning the <Control Ring> changes the aspect ratio.
1. Press the <Power> button on the camera.
2. Press the <FUNC./SET> () button.
3. The following screen appears.
Operate the <directional buttons> up or down to select [Still Image Aspect Ratio].
Operate the <directional buttons> right or left to select an aspect ratio of your choice, then press the <FUNC./SET> () button.
When the following shooting modes are selected, the aspect ratio cannot be changed, or limited aspect ratios are available.

Canon Power Shot SX50 HS.

Hello All,
I am a new member on the message boards. Owner of a Canon Power Shot SX50 HS.
I enjoy nature and take lots of bird, butterfly, deer, etc. shots. Also scenery shots.
I do not understand the setting on this camera and I only use the auto mode.
Question: What are the best settings (Apature and ISO) for the type of pictures I take.   Some come out sharp but lots have a blur.    Suggestions wlecome.......Thanks!

Thanks for looking and commenting. I'm practicing daily and learning something new about the SX50 with each outing. So far, this is what's been working for me.
I believe four main factors have helped me get the type of images I'm very happy with.
1. Shooting primarily in Shutter Priority Mode or Manual Mode so I have control over shutter speed, which I set as high as possible for each scene.
2. Adjusting Exposure Compensation values for each and every shot when using Shutter Priority Mode or Aperture Priority Mode.
3. Using Center-Weighted-Average Metering.
4. Using the "Framing Assist - Lock" feature is extemely effective when using the camera at, or near, maximum zoom. It's a button located ON the camera that you press while composing the shot. The use of this feature is explained on page 57 of the manual. Along with the other strategies I use to obtain sharp hand-held images when shooting toward the long end of the zoom, this extra bit of stabilization the Framing Assist - Lock provides really helps.
I don't use a tripod when I take bird & wildlife photos. With a zoom this generous and especially on a point-and-shoot camera, it's helped me immensely to shoot in either Manual Mode or Shutter Priority Mode because I can increase the shutter speed to very high values and by doing so, greatly reduce hand-held camera shake. Along with the excellent image-stabilization performance of the camera, this combination (fast shutter speed & image-stabilization) gives my photos that extra bit of clarity people often comment on. Many of the photos on my website were taken at near or maximum zoom! Fast shutter speeds must not only be thought of for reducing subject motion blur.
Also, I'm a heavy user of the "Exposure Compensation" features this camera has to offer and this allows me to effectively control the level of lightness or darkness I want in the final image while shooting in Shutter Priority Mode and Aperture Priority Mode and is a good strategy before I'm forced to increase the ISO level thereby helping to keep noise levels to a minimum. In Shutter Priority Mode the camera automatically selects the aperture value. While Aperture Priority Mode is an excellent way to get great photos with this camera, I mostly focus on single subjects in my photography, like birds, so depth of field isn't as important to me and I'm able to control light entering the camera in other ways. I specifically set an exposure compensation value for every shot I take. Although the values might change slightly from shot to shot, and depend on the amount of bright sulight striking the subect, they're usually in the minus range of say, -1.3 to -1.0, or lower in some cases. This is critical to the style and "look" of what I want in an image. I prefer a slightly "darker tone" in my images and along with keeping the ISO values as close to ISO 80 or ISO 100 as possible, this is how I achieve images with such deep and rich color chiefly because I'm preventing the camera from producing an overexposed image. This is especially how I capture fine feather detail in white feathered birds such as egrets. Many small sensor point-and-shoot cameras tend to "overexpose" the image resulting in "blown-out highlights" producing images that often lack nice color quality and sharpness so I intentionally "underexpose" the image a bit and get exactly what I desire. The results simply look more dramatic and naturally sharper, in my opinion. In post-processing the only "correction" I ever really need to make is a one-click "Auto Contrast" in Photoshop Elements. I never have to sharpen an image. Each image on my website will display the actual settings used for that particular photo and is a good way to see the shutter speeds and the exposure compensation settings that were used, as well. Finally, I like the results I get using Center-Weighted- Average Metering.
So far, these are the core settings I've been using:
“Recording Pixel Setting" (Image Size) is set to "L" for LARGE 12M 4000x3000 & "Compression Ratio" (Image Quality) is set to "SUPERFINE JPEG." I use Continuous Auto-Focus, Auto-Focus Frame: FlexiZone, Center-Weighted-Average Metering, Spot AE is set to Center. I stay as close to ISO 80 or 100 as possible, although this camera seems to do quite well with slightly higher ISO values with regard to visible "noise." High ISO NR is set to "Standard" and I NEVER USE AUTO ISO. Image Stabilization is set to: Continuous, and I select the appropriate white-balance PRESET icon for the particular weather condition, and I never use the "AWB" preset icon. I prefer to shoot using Burst Mode. I do not use i-Contrast, Dynamic Range Correction or Shadow Correction, either.
Since I DO NOT use "Custom Colors," settings regarding Sharpness, Contrast, and Saturation remain at their Default (ZERO) points, so therefore, I have not pressed any buttons to increase these values beyond their factory defaults. I shoot all my photographs via the LCD which remains at the factory default brightness. This should cover most of the main settings I use and I'll have to dig deeper into the menus to see if there are some new settings or features in the SX50 I haven't noticed yet.
Hopefully, this introduction will prove helpful if you're interested in trying a different approach with your SX50. To be sure, there are many ways to get good results from this camera and this is simply how I prefer to do it! Can't wait to see the pictures from your trip!

HT4757 I have a canon power shot G6 that no longer works with my iMac??? Please help

Up until 2 months ago my Canon Power Shot G6 has always worked with my IMac. However, my system no longer recognizes the camera upon connecting via usb. Why?
What should I do?

Oh my God thank you so much. I spent the last week trying to figure this **** thing out and that's all it took. Sometimes the most simple explanation is all that's required but last looked at. Thank you for pointing out the obvious. I kinda wish Linksys would've pointed that out to me when I exchanged a total of 25 e-mails with them. Oh well. Thank you again. I am so grateful.

Trouble importing photos from Canon Power Shot SD1300

Until today, my family has had no difficulty importing photos into iPhoto from our Canon Power Shot SD1300 camera. But when I plugged in today to import the most recent few months of shots, the program would not accept the .jpg file format (or so the notice said). Similarly, Image Capture would not import the images.
I'm running iPhoto 8.1.2, Image Capture 6.0.1 on a MacBookPro6,2 with an Intel Core i5/2.4 GHz machine with OS X 10.6.8.
Why is this suddently not working? Did something happen with recent updates of software that screwed everything up? We've tried most of the sensible things from the camera end: deleting old photos so the memory card shouldn't be overloaded, recharging battery....

Unfortunately, the iPhoto error message, which had something to do with "not recognizing the file type" or something (though they were listed as .jpg files) no longer shows up. Now iPhoto thinks there are no photos on the camera, though there are quite a few actually.
Image Capture recognizes that there are image files, but says, "Import Error. An error occurred while importing. 347 items were not imported." And then it begins with a list of the first files on the camera.

My airmac no longer finds cameras. Will find iphone, but no longer photos either. My Canon Power Shots, old and new, are as good as rocks.

Recently my MacBook Air does not list devices that are cameras. It used to, but does not now. I have recently a) used MacKeeper, b) deleted movies, photos (thousands of those spawning ones) for space, c) installed ios 7 on my iphone, d) bought a Canon Power Shot SX 170is.
Image Capture, Image Browser EX, iphoto--nothing gets photos...nothing sees photos residing on my Canon PowerShots (old and new) or my iphone. Macbook Air can not find cameras.
Help. All cameras are rocks now.

MacKeeper is considered Malwear and has destroyed many iPhoto libraries - read the user tip on it - https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=documents - my best guess is that your problem was caused by MacKeeper - I suggest you remove it according to the instructions in that user tip
to test depress the option key and launch iphoto - create a new library and see if it works correctly with your cameras - post back with the results

Thank you for posting.
First, you will need to install the software that came with your camera. Then, connect your camera and power it on in playback. Use the Canon software to download the images from your camera.
Once the images are on your computer, there are a couple of ways to e-mail them. Canon's ImageBrowser EX has an e-mail option in it that you can use simply by selecting the images you want to e-mail, clicking on the Share button, then selecting Email Images.
Otherwise, you can open your favorite e-mail application, then use the appropriate options in that application to attach images to a new e-mail.

Power Mac 5260/100 System CD

I found a eBay store selling what appears to be a Power Mac 5260/120 System CD containing Mac OS 7.5.3. Would this System CD also be compatible with a Power Mac 5260/100 by any chance? I'm asking because I happen to own a Power Mac 5260/100 I bought second hand off eBay.

I would think that there is a high probability it would work. If it's not too expensive, it's worth the chance of buying.

Power Mac 5260/100 Open Transport

I can't get Open Transport to work on my Power Mac 5260/100 with 64 MB of RAM running Mac OS 9.1. I have the TCP/IP control panel set to get the IP address using DHCP using the Farallon LC PDS EtherMac NSC 10-Base T ethernet card & I checked use 802.3 framing. I have also installed the TCP/IP Options control panel & I checked all three check boxes. I also upgraded Open Transport to 2.7.6. What do I need to do to get my Mac online?

No. I haven't configured the AppleTalk control panel. The only thing I've ever used AppleTalk for is to print to my Personal LaserWriter NTR over LocalTalk. I managed to get Open Transport working in Mac OS 8.6 but I forget what exactly I did to get it working. It worked for a while with the Apple PDS Ethernet card driver & then it stopped working. I remember I had to install the TCP/IP Options control panel & check Disable MTU IP Path Discovery to get it working. I also had to install the latest version of Apple's Remote Access Client. Before upgrading to Mac OS 9.1 I did a clean reinstall of Mac OS 8.6 but I've kind of forgotten what exactly else I did to get online. I've never used the Farallon drivers & I'm not sure if I trust the installer either since it installs a outdated version of the EtherTalk Phase 2 extension.

Power Mac 5260/100 Won't Start

I just noticed recently that my Power Mac 5260/100 won't startup anymore. I just recently replaced the PRAM battery since according to my dad's mulit-meter it was dead. The Power Mac 5260/100 doesn't even get as far as the bonging stage in the startup process. Does this mean I have a dead logic board or bad RAM? I'd be willing to replace the logic board since I have a brand new Apple TV/Video System installed that I payed a lot of money on eBay for (it came unopened when I got it so I know those components didn't fail). I also use it for old games and would like to know if I'll be able to in the future too.

I wouldn't give up yet. The CUDA reset and PRAM battery are "first responders" when it comes to "mostly dead" Macs, so we always start there.
When you attempt a start, can you hear anything? Fans? Hard drive?
Have you tried booting from a CD with a valid system? Utility CDs allow this if they are bootable. My TechTools 3 CD boots into the highest OS the computer will support (up to 9.2.2). It's amusing to see a 6100 or 6200 display the OS9 logo. I had to run utilities every few days on my 6200/75 to keep it limping along.
Checked everything inside for solid connections?
I think that one has the "tray type" logic board with scores of connectors along one edge. Those must be clean and seated.
Some in this series have a plastic bridle arrangement for the rear of the CD-ROM that can flex and lose contact. Check/clean it if present.
I believe this computer uses "soft power." Have you tried a different keyboard, or tried using the backup power button?
There were "known hardware issues" with this and similar Mac models. Review that article and this one (includes a logic board diagram). The second link has links to hardware testers if you get it running. The extended warranty period ended in July 2003(?), however.

Power Macintosh 7500/100 thinks all floppies are locked.

My new (to me) Power Macintosh 7500/100 is thinking all disks I put in it are locked. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the drive?

This is how I clean floppy drives:
1) Remove floppy drive from the computer.
2) Remove the cover.
3) Use a can of compressed air, making sure all the loose dust is gone.
4) Use cotton swabs to reach the tighter spots, making sure all dirt is cleaned out.
5) Lubricate the mechanism and springs with 3-in-1 multipurpose oil, a silicone grease or something similar. Do not use WD-40 or white lithium grease - these won't last long.
6) Reassemble the drive and install it back into the computer.
7) Use a floppy drive cleaning diskette/kit to clean the read/write heads of the drive. Although this can be done manually with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, it is more safe to use a cleaning diskette because you cannot damage the drive this way. If doing it manually, please be careful and don't stretch the read/write head spring too far - otherwise, the upper read/write head will never go down again.
If you follow these easy procedures, your drive should be good as new. Good luck!

System 8 for Power Mac 7500/100 on CD

My harddisk died and I have seem to lost my system CD as well.
Is there anybody who can provide me with a CD with system 8, I can't download from the internet (computer won't start up) so CD has to be mailed by post to the Netherlands.

You will find a disk image of a bootable Disk Tools PPC floppy here. With access to another Mac with a built-in floppy drive, use StuffIt Expander to decode the downloaded .bin file (if applicable, set the StuffIt Expander preferences NOT to mount disk images). Then use the Make a Floppy command (under the Utilities menu) in Disk Copy 6.3.3 to produce a sector-copied floppy disk. This diskette should at least make a proper startup of the Power Macintosh 7500/100 possible. You may thus be able to inspect and perhaps correct the contents of the hard disk.
Through the use of special techniques it is also possible to modify a tools floppy to hold a different disk utility (such as Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 here) or a CD-ROM extension (like Apple CD-ROM 5.4 here, and various helper files).

I might have tested it myself a few months ago, I cannot remember the results but I believe booting from the SD slot is not supported by the UEFI firmware. It is mentioned here in the comments of this Amazon review for the Stream 11: "I have not been able to boot ANYTHING from the micro-SDXC slot. I can install Ubuntu on it, but I cannot boot from it. I don't know if booting is even possible."

Power Shot A1400; not A1200 - can't download movies

My new camera is a Power Shot 1400 that I'm having trouble downloading videos from. I've tried using my USB cord and just inserting the SD card. The photos come up, but the videos don't.

I'm curious as to which software you are using to download the videos and photos. I don't know what computer operating system you have, but I will assume you are using Windows. If you use the Windows software to download the videos, make sure that the path is set to where you want the videos to go. If you connect the camera with the USB, once the window opens, select the options in the lower left. Then check where the photos and videos are going. Chances are the videos are downloaded to a different folder.
But please let us know which computer and operating system you are using and what software to download in case my assumptions are wrong. This way the community can assist you better.
