Power shuts off in a while

Lets see who can solve this for me:
my computer will shut off if i attempt to watch online streaming videos, play games, or do virus scan.
i did a memory scan with the windows 7 memory diagnostic utility, and came back with nothing.
is there any other hardware scanning utilities out there?

What did you dual boot too?
In Windows XP, for instance (and other versions) the machine may automatically reboot instead of giving you an error message, (the old 'blue screen of death'). To disable this in XP, follow the following directions:
1.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.
Click the Advanced tab.
3.
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4.
Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5.
Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
Once this is disabled, you may find further information allowing you to track down which hardware/driver is causing the error.
Immediate steps to take as well:
1. Update ALL drivers for all devices.
2. Remove and reseat all hardware (except CPU, and don't forget the memory!). A blow down to remove dust might help as well, as long as you're in there.

I have not had any experience in getting any devices repaired so I'm not sure which store to resort to. An official Apple store should more than likely get you what you need, but I'm guessing it's probably more expensive. (if any cost for your situation)
I hope you get your problem resolved.

  • No warning when on reserve power, shuts off data lost

    Hi There:
I would like to know if there is a problem with my Macbook and if it may need service. I am often working on a presentation and don't check my battery life, after I deplete it, it doesn't tell me that it is about to run on reserve battery power. Instead it just quits and whatever I was doing was lost.
Before, my computer would bring up a little message that said that I was about to run on reserve power and that I better connect otherwise it will shut off. When this happened I was able to connect it, restart (if it had shut of on me) and the screen I had when it shut down on me was there just as I had left it. Can anyone tell me if my Macbook needs service? Or is this a setting I am missing in prefs.
    Thanks Tyler

Check and see if you have battery update 1.3 installed.
    MacBook/Library/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
Leopard installs it. It is the MacBook Pro update.
If it is 1.3 drag it to the trash and then reboot. After you reboot you will be able to emtpy the trash. Once you have done that run software update and it should install Battery Update 1.2. You should also reset the SMC (System Management Controller).

  • Erratic "Low Battery Power" shut-offs

My I-Pod Mini is less than a year old and has developed a very annoying problem. Even with a full charge the unit will flash the "Low Battery Power" warning and then shut off. On some occassions the unit will turn back on within a few minutes and then play for a few hours. On other occassions the unit will not play at all. In the latter circumstance, I charge the I-Pod, but the icon will show that the battery is fully charged. It is then 50-50 as to whether it will play.
To make matters more frustrating I sent my mini to Apple for service and got it back (completely erased) with a letter saying it operated within acceptable limits. So, now I have a mini that does not work well, and I am out shipping expenses - that doesn't seem right!
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    This sounds like my problem.

  • Weird automatic power shut offs

Just bought and assembled a KT4V board with an AMD Athlon 1800 with 133mhz fsb, 266mhz ddr Ram, 64mb Geforce 2.  However when it boots up it likes to automatically shut off at points. I don't mea restart I mea I have to turn the power switch i the back off and on and then hit the switch in the front. Beyond the fact it does not eve get past the memory check with the FSB at 133 or for that matter aything over 100 (so it says the processor is only 1150mhz on start up) even with default settings when it gets past the POST it can't seem to read my boot disc in the floppy drive(sayig it can't locate the boot record) although it registers the device at the beginning. Any suggestions to the source of the problem/problems would be much appreciated.

I experienced the same rebooting issue with the KT4V I set up for a friend recently. It turned out it was the Data Curruption Issue Described in This Thread
The 1.7 Bios fixed the issue for me - but there are reports that it severly kills HardDrive Performance, but at least the computer is stable...
Can anyone Confirm that the 1.7 bios does kill harddrive performance? The board is out of my hands now and I didnt test the performance before the new bios update anyway.

  • My ipod touch(3rd generation) shuts off every time while backing up. What do I do without losing all my datat?

My ipod for  some reason refuses to back up on my laptop. Hwnever it's syncing, it shuts off right before it finishes. HELP!!

If you successfully restored (went through all steps without error) to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Need to Create a Live Update Smart Playlist That Shuts Off After a While

    Hi All--
I'm trying to create a smart playlist with the following properties:
    1) Every time I play it, it selects a different random set of songs.
    2) The playlist plays for a fixed duration, then shuts off.  (I like to go to sleep to music, but it wakes me up in the middle of the night if it plays for too long.)
The best I've been able to come up with is to set "not played in the last xx days", "Limit to yy minutes selected by random", and "live updating".  However, there's a problem with this:  as soon as one song has played, it's purged from the list, which causes live updating to replace it with a new song.  As a result, this creates a list that plays forever, since new songs are continuously added to replace the ones that have been played.
I tried turning off live updating, but then I'm stuck with the same songs over and over.  I also know about the trick of just using "select random" and deleting the contents of the list, so that live update will repopulate it, but that won't work on an iPod without doing it in iTunes and then re-syncing.
    Any ideas?

OK, I think I finally found a way to do this, sorta.  This will work on any iPod or iPhone that supports live update and allows the creation of ad-hoc playlists, either named or on-the-go:
    1) Create the list as described above.
    2) Sync to iPod or iPhone
3a) On a non-touch iPod, highlight the playlist and hold down the select button until you get the menu with "add to on-the-go" in it, and select that.
3b) On an iPod touch or iPhone, create a new playlist, then select the dynamic list and "add all songs" to it.
The playlist you created isn't dynamic, so you'll just play through it once and stop.  Deleting the contents from the temporary list and doing step 3a/b over will get you a new set of songs.  The dynamic list will purge the songs and update with new ones as you play them from the static list.
It's not perfect, but it's reasonably fast to get a time-bounded selection of music that refreshes each time you want to play the list.

  • 975X Platinum PUE V2.0 Power shuts off after ~45 sec?

I'm looking for help with a frustrating issue.  This is a new build with the following:
    *MSI 975X Platinum PUE
    *Intel Core2Duo E6600 2.4Ghz 2M 1066FSB Socket 775
*XFX GeForce 7900 GT Video Card in PCIe
    *Old IDE HD with XP
    *New WD Caviar 250GB SATA
    *Kingston 1024MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory x 2
The memory is in the DIMM1 & DIMM2 positions and the system will boot to the BIOS.  Without doing anything, the system shuts down after about 30-45 seconds.  Any suggestions would be very helpful.  I have searched the forums and FAQ and the only thing that it may be is the "Power On after Power Off" under the Power Management Page in the CMOS Setup.  I have not been able to try that yet, as the system doesn't stay on long enough.
Thanks for any help in advance!

I've never done that before. I usually still have my original media so that I can reinstall my programs.
It is hairy but I am sure it is possible to manually move over all the required stuff so that it can work
again. Several things to look into:
    a) Can you migrate checkpoints? XP creates checkpoints so that you can later rollback. My question
is, can you use a checkpoint and move it over to a different computer? Probably not but it might be
    worth investigating.
    b) Manuallly do what an installer does.
      - first move over your program files directory to where you want it to reside
      - the nasty part is to somehow copy over the registry that refer to the programs that you just moved.
        Good luck on that one.
      - also inspect the system32 directory for dll's that applications sometimes install. Move those as well.
I do recall, I needed to do something similar to what you are doing and it was a hit or miss depending on
the program. Some programs just complained it wasn't in the registry and asked if I wanted to put it in.
Those solved themselves. Things like Microsoft Word just insisted to do a reinstall.

  • Full Power Shut Off

I just got a BlackBerry Bold 9650.  I can't find the full power off.  Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

To power off the BlackBerry Bold, go into the settings and click the Power off Icon and click Full Power off.  Another option is to press and hold down the end call key until the device powers off completely. To turn it back on, press the same key.

  • Airport connection shuts off after a while and can't be turned on again

I have MacBook Pro alu-body (bought in March) and have the following strange problem. I got my MacBook back s few days ago from my Apple reseller who had to fix my laptop as the iSight camera wasn't working anymore. But sincethen, when I'm connected to the internet via my Airport, after a while (this can be 10 mins or so) suddenly the Airport switches of and can't be switched on again using the Network preferences utility. The very strange thing however is that I'm using a widget from a Classical Radio station to listen to the radio, that music (live streaming) is still okay, but at the same time I can't use my Airport as I can't switch it on again. So, I only can do then is to restart and the problem will occur after let's say 10 - 15 minutes or so.
I ran Apple hardware test and did some other test with Techtool Pro 5, but couldn't find anything wrong.
    What can/should I do?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Thanks, but the problem is more complicated I guess. I just had the same problem, but now my MacBook Pro was completely frozen .... I couldn't do anything any more besides restarting.
After the restart, the Aiport doesn't come up again - ergo: the symbol on top of my MacBook is shows that the Aiport hasn't been installed: when I click on this symbol there is a text which says:'There is no Aiport card installed!'. So the system doesn't seem to find the Aiport card. When I use the 'Systemprofile' under the Apple and select Network > Aiport-card I can read 'no information has been found'.
I don't get it .... is this a hardware or a software problem?

  • Computer inadvertently shuts off

    Hi there,
I have an HP Pavillion a6600f that's been upgraded to windows seven ultimate (32 bit). In the last  couple of weeks, it has been shutting off randomly(?) while I'm using it. In the last couple days it has happened 3+ times each day. I have run malwarebytes full scan twice, as well as a bitdefender full system scan once. There are no problems. I have checked for hard drive problems (tune-up utilities). I have upgraded all drivers that I could from the hp site. I have opened up the tower and cleaned it out extensively. Probably made no difference, it isn't even close to overheating and it wasn't that dirty. It doesn't make any funny sounds. Yet, the problem persists.
There is no one particular activity that I'm doing on the computer when it shuts off. I could be watching videos, surfing the web, playing games, listening to music,  etc., or some combination of things. Possibly after just a few minutes to a few hours, suddenly, the screen, without any warning whatsoever, will fade (fade takes about 1sec), and then the screen is black. Sound will continue for about 5-10 seconds, then stops, and then the whole pc will shut down (screen is black throughout). If I wait a few minutes (it restarts eventually, which i find rather odd), or start it up again (without switching the power bar completely off), then when I turn it on and log in, it will resume to exactly where I left off.
Now the question is: is my power supply failing? Should I back up my pc to my 2TB seagate external drive right now to be safe, or is there nothing to worry about? I figure that if the problem worsens, I'm just going to save whatever I can from my hp and buy a new computer. It's a few years old now, but how can I be sure that the power supply is failing? Could there be any other causes?
Any support is much appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    Troy

    Troy, welcome to the forum.
The symptoms that you describe certainly do sound like a PSU problem.  It is surprising how many different types of problems can be caused by a failing PSU.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the problem.  The PSU is the most replaced component in a computer.
I definitely suggest doing a backup of your personal data.  I do this at least weekly; especially data and photos that I can't replace.

  • HELP!!! My Satellite Series A215-S7444 Laptop Randomly Shuts Off!!

I own a Satellite A215-S7444 and it will randomly shut off. Sometimes on good days it won't shut off at all while I might run it for many hours, but this is very rare. Most of the time I will be running it and it will shut off out of nowhere, I will turn it back on right away and it will power back on with all I was just doing lost in the process. It will again power down after I restart it after a couple of mins, and each time I restart it the random shutdown takes less and less time to shut off. When it gets to the point where I can't even power it on past the windows logo, I have to let it sit for a couple of hours to a day till I put it on again and it will let me use it for a while till it starts shutting down again. Every time it starts shutting down it's always in steps like (1st shutdown 30 min into use, 2nd shutdown 10min into use, 3rd shutdown 5min into use..... etc.) I downloaded a program to monitor if it's overheating when it shuts off and it's definitely not overheating. I checked the fan and cleaned it out, and it works fine and is clean. The shut off seems to happen mostly when I am trying to download or watch any video or movie files from the web. Usually when I try to watch one it is almost guaranteed to shut off shortly after, and I can be online for hours but as soon as I try to download or watch video it is a knockout punch for the laptop. I can repair myself and anything else that might need to be done or checked I just can't figure this mystery out. I do not want to take this in for repair because it is too expensive for them to tell me "figuratively speaking" that it was a $10 part and I have to pay $300 for labor, diagnostics, and repair when I could have done it myself for just the cost of the part. If I have no other choice then I will bring it in, but that is if there is no other choice. Please someone out there help me!!!!

same here. the only difference is that, it doesn't matter what i do such as just using microsoft word software, or just surfing the internet. It will eventually shut off by itself for only like 1 hour or less than 1 hour sometimes. I noticed that every time it shuts off, it's too hot where the fan is located. I don't know what's wrong with it because i don't have any knowledge about computers. All i know is that  it shuts off out of nowhere. Is this what you call overheating or something else?
It pisses me off because i'm doing my homework or a paper and it will randomly shut off while i'm doing something important for school. And to the fact that i just bought this laptop 2 yrs ago, the problem started when this laptop was almost 1yr. like you, i don't want to spend a lot of money just for labor. And oh, also, it will shut off right away when i use USB ports. anything that i plug in the USB ports or any accessories such as ports from laptop to the tv. it shut offs right away and i couldn't turn it on right away. not unless i wait for like 2 hours or more? after 2 hours, i am able to use it for quite a bit only.  it frustrates me.
is this manufacturer's problem? or what? what should I do? Should i bring it to the computer repairer again? I brought this computer for many times already.
