Power Source Help

My Kt333 Ultra is doing fine. Excelent Mobo. Since installed PCAlert, randomly get warnings because of 12 v. limit beeing surpassed to 13.1 v. No problem with temp. Was wondering if is possible to put a resist. in 12 v. out line to assure the 12 v limit isn't surpassed. T.I.A. ?(

Thanks wonkanoby for your fast reply. The only problem is that PCAlert is doing it's job announcing me that the PC is too much near the limit. It doesn't care if i'm playing a game or wrinting or navigating, it simply jumps in, closing the window and giving it's own show with sirens and red numbers flashing. Yes, I can close it, but then I would not receive any warning, and that is not the idea. I was thinking that if the P.S. was doing a good job except for this one 12 v. problem, it would be silly to throw it and spent a lot of money buying a new one.  8)

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

But they work normally when not plugged in?  What kind of power source are you plugging it into? It maybe outputting more than what the iPod can handle.  I had this happen to an iPod I plugged into a powerstrip that was plugged into the cigarette lighter in a vehicle an experienced the same thing.

  • My Iphone won't do an icloud backup, I have enough storage and i am connected to a power source AND connected to Wi-Fi, Help

Today I changed my Apple ID, and now am trying to do an iCloud backup and I AM connected to a wi-fi source as well as a power source and it WILL NOT back up, any suggestions as to why??

I'm having the same problem.  Interesting part is that I also have an iPad.  They sit side-by-side in docks for power, have the same settings to backup to iCloud.  But the iPhone has never backed up to iCloud and the iPad does so regularly every night (same appleid on both).  Both have plenty of extra storage.  The only difference is that the iPhone only connects to the 2.4GHz wifi, while the iPad (new) will connect to either 2.4GHz or 5GHz wifi (my router supports both and both are turned on--the iPad seems to connect via the 5GHz side preferentially).  Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi use the same Internet connection.
When I try to do a manual backup to iCloud, it sits there and appears to be trying, but last night (I started the manual backup before going to bed) it had gotten no further than barely starting (as indicated by the progress bar) by morning.  So something is definitely wrong.

  • My iphone 5 won't turn on but when plugged into power source it keeps showing apple logo?

My iPhone 5 won't turn on at all and then when I plug it into a power source either into a plug socket or into my laptop with the USB cable it keeps showing start up screen with apple logo over and over again on a loop.
I have tried holding the top and front button together, this didn't work. I have also tried connecting to my laptop and following the reboot steps that I found on another discussion forum. Neither worked for me. The phone just won't reboot and it keeps continuing to loop the apple logo screen over and over without me touching anything.
The iPhone won't even connect to itunes and so itunes seems to not recognise my phone because its not even turning on (just continually apple logo screen appears for 5 seconds, goes to black screen and then repeats).
I don't know what is happening to it! Can anyone help? Is it a fault with the hardware or have I dont something to it? The next appointment at the genius bar for me is monday so I'm going to keep looking for any more recent ones until then but I really need to get it sorted before then so if anyone can help that would be great!
    Thanks

Try a reset when your iPhone is plugged into the charger as you say it does not respond when not plugged in...
Press and hold the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release.  This may take up to 10 seconds.  This is the equivalent of a re-boot and you will not lose any data.
See if it will charge after this.

  • Hi! I purchased my ATV in Miami, but I live in Argentina. I have not been able to get the device running on any TVs. When I plug it in, it briefly shows the apple logo, then a sign saying no signal, check power cords and power source or sthg like that.

    Hi!
I purchased my AppleTV in Miami, but I live in Argentina.
I have not been able to get my device running correctly, and altough I've read tons of things online, I still have no solution to my problem.
Here's the thing: after everything's plugged in and ON, I see the Apple logo briefly, then the TV displays a sign that says no signal, check pwoer cords and power source.
But everything is plugged in and connected properly, otherwise, I doubt I'd be seeing the apple logo, right?
I tried changing the HDMI cable, reversing the ends, switching ports, hard resetting the ATV, and trying a different TV. No luck.
I read there is some issue with Samsung TVs, and most LED and LCD tvs down here are Samsung.
On the other hand, I cannot return it or exchange it, since I bought it in the states.
Oh! One of the tvs I tried it on displays a little sign that reads "connected at 1280x720 @60hz", and only THEN, goes to the "no signal" sign.
Please!!! I am being driven up the walls here.... HELP!!

    Try this:
    Change the Apple TV resolution:
Press and hold the Menu and Up button on your Apple Remote for six seconds.
The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals.
Press Play on the Apple Remote to keep the current resolution or Select to manually cycle to the next resolution.

  • I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work at all. I'm currently in India. Could that be the cause or can anyone suggest any reason why this wouldn't work?

"gets stuck" - are there any error messages?
If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

  • I dropped my iphone 4, and it wont turn on unless connected to a power source. even then its stuck on the apple logo.but once i take it off the power source it shuts off and wont turn on.

I dropped my iphone 4 and it shut off and when i tried to cut it on it wouldnt. so i connected it to a power source and it tunred on but stay stucked on the apple logo. so when i discounted it shut off. it only turns on when connected to a power source but not on its own. i tired to connect it to itunes no help, i tried to press the home and power button still no help.

Your last try would be a restore if you can get iTunes to recognize the phone. If not, you have probably damaged the device beyond repair. You can go to see Apple about an out of warranty replacement. The cost for the iPhone 4 is $149US, you can check for your location.

  • I have new hard drive in macbook pro(08) and have SATA cable with external power source to old hard drive (10.5.8)via. USB port and newer drive(10.6.8) will not recognize older drive..Do I need to partition newer drive with older disk to recover data?

I have new HD 750GB Hybrid in 2008 Macbook Pro 17" w/ Snow Leopard 10.6.8  connected to old Hard drive(250GB that had 10.5.8 on it at time of failure) via SATA cable to USB port with external power source.. Computer not acknowledging old HD at all in Disk Utility or otherwise (that I'm aware of)..Do I need to partition New HD and load old(10.5.8) onto partition to recognize older drive for data recovery? Thanks Wayno08

You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction  and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
    I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The  only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.
Disk Warrior can be found at:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the  damage has already been done.
    Let us know what happens.

  • My iPod touch crashes. There is no rhyme or reason as to when the crash occurs. It will not reboot until reconnected to a power source. Once connected to a power source, it reboots and works well. When disconnected it will work then crash again.

My Ipod Touch 4th generation (8gb, iOS 5.1) crashes for no apparent reason. There is no rhyme or reason to when the crash occurs.
Once it crashes, the only way to reboot the iPod is to connect it to an external power source (computer or AC outlet). Once connected, it will reboot and operate normally.
When disconnected from the power source, it will operate for a variable periods of time (maybe minutes, maybe hours) then crash again. It can't be rebooted until again attached to an external power source.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation? Thanks for your help.....

    Hey there Ketan,
In order to help you troubleshoot the cause of this Kernel Panic, I would recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a kernel panic occurred. After the restart, you’ll see a message that your computer restarted because of a problem.
The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
If the kernel panic is caused by a known problem, the faulty software is identified. To make sure that this software doesn’t continue to cause kernel panics, move it to the Trash.
If the faulty software is not identified and your Mac continues to experience kernel panics, try the following:
Restart your Mac in safe mode. If it successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > App Store, click Updates, then install any available updates.
Uninstall any plug-ins or other enhancement software from manufacturers other than Apple. If you recently updated OS X or an app, plug-ins and other software that worked in the past may no longer be compatible. Read the manufacturer’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to be sure the software is compatible with your version of OS X.
Disconnect all USB and FireWire devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. Remove hardware upgrades from other manufacturers, such as random–access memory (RAM) and Peripheral Component Interconnect cards. Then try restarting your Mac.
If this resolves the issue, reconnect one device at a time, restarting your Mac after reconnecting each one, until you determine which device is causing the problem.
    Reset parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These apps can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
If the steps above don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.
Note:    If you moved or renamed an OS X system file or folder, you must reinstall OS X. It won’t work to just replace or rename the specific item.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling
