Power supply clicks twice when plugged in.

I'm new to Mac however I've been a certified PC tech for many years. I recently purchased my first Mac. It worked fine but needed to have the fans cleaned out. I removed the components and power supply just as I would have done for any PC (I was using heel straps and working on an ESD safe workbench). Upon cleaning the components I reassembled the tower (no left over pieces) and heard two clicks coming from the power supply when I plugged it in and when I unplugged it. After troubleshooting the components individually, and still hearing the two clicks I decided to remove the power supply and test it independently. When I plug in the power supply w/o being attached to the tower I still get the same two clicks (making a relay opening and closing sound) no fans or LEDs come on. Falling back on my years in the industry and common since I decided that the power supply needed to be replaced. After receiving the new (not refurbished) power supply and installing it I'm still getting the same two clicks. At this point due to frustration I break down and call the pros. I called four Mac repair facilities (three third parties and The Mac Store) with a question "is it normal for a G5 power supply that is not connected to the logic board to make a relay open and closing clicking sound" and didn't get much help. Since I'm new to Mac I'm unfamiliar with the characteristics of the hardware. I know that if I were to plug in a normal PC power supply w/o the logic board nothing would happen, but I was told by two of the Mac techs that a Mac power supply would still make the same relay noise w/o being attached to the logic board. The problem is that I have now dropped a fair amount of money in this G5 and I have nothing to show for my investment and I don't know where to go from here. If two of the Mac techs were right then I need to send the new power supply back for an exchange, or if the other two Mac techs were right I need to replace the logic board.
The specs are:
1.8GHz Duel Processors
160G Hard Drive
600W Power Supply
2G RAM
512 Video Card
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you,
Brian M

Dear Brian,
I'm sure that clicking relais sound is the normal behaviour of every G5 power supply.
Did you use the official service manual for the specified computer? If not, you can download it here (I don't know which of the two files is appropriate for your computer, but one of those certainly is).
The 512 MB video card is not the standard configuration: the maximum amount of VRAM for an Apple supplied ATI or NVidia was up to 256 MB.
Lots of success resolving the problem and regards,
Robbert

when it boots the power supply starts clicking, like a fan hitting something, when i pull the plug it slows down slowly, aany ideas?
    thanks

i have the same problem, if it could be considered a problem.

I did a search on the web and found many others messages about this. I called the support and did a SMC reset, but it still power up when i plug it. Hope this will not produce any damage in the future.

  • I can't get my ipod classic (120GB) to work. I am getting error code 1434, and the ipod is making a lot of clicking noises when plugged in

After coming back from Hawaii, my Ipod classic doesn't work anymore. When plugged into itunes, it says that it may be corrupt, and that I need to restore it. I have tried this, but everytime it gives me an error code of 1434. When I click more information, it sends me to a support page, but not for error code 1434. I tried all of the steps on the page hoping that it would help. Also my ipod is making  a lot of clicking noises when it is trying to run, alomst as if it is skipping inside and can't fully run. Can anyone help me ?

Clicking sounds from an iPod that has a hard drive for storage is not a good thing.  It usually means the hard drive is faulty.  That is the likely reason for getting an error during the attempt to Restore.
If you use a Mac, you can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, connect the iPod and instead of running iTunes, run Disk Utility.  Does the iPod appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?  If it does, select the iPod device in the sidebar, not the volume indented below the device (if there is one).  Go to the Erase tab.  Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Name does not matter.  Click on Security Options and choose to write a single pass of zeros over the entire disk.  This serves as a good "stress test" for the iPod's hard drive.  Back on the main window, click Erase.
This takes longer than a regular erase, but you should see steady progress.  If it errors out, or stalls for a LONG time (like hours), the hard drive is likely to be faulty.
If it completes successfully, quit Disk Utility, run iTunes and try to do another Restore

  • Ipod mini 2nd gen: clicking noise when plugged in only

My mini just makes clicking noises when I plug it into the usb port. I thought it was the hard drive after reading tons of posts about the clicking noise, and got a compact flash replacement but it is still clicking. I dont think it is the battery. If it was, it should hold some sort of charge shouldnt it?
    What could be causing it?
Is my mini out of whack? I did drop it before it died 2 years ago, but it worked for quite a few months after dropping it though. I just got around to working on it now cuz I miss it.

thanks for the reply. well changing the hard drive was easy. it might be the battery. it did give me some errors before it crapped out. i just dont remember what those were. i think it was an apple with a lightning over it, which would indicate a bad battery i suppose. i will try to change the battery and see how that goes. i just cant troubleshoot since nothing comes on, except for a faint clicking noise when it's hooked up to the usb.

  • U510 won't turn on, battery light flashes twice when plugged in then nothing

My ideapad u510 is dead. It won't turn on and no power. The only indicator i get is sometimes when inserting the power adapter the battery indicator light will flash twice amber then turn off. Is this an error code of some sort or is the adapter shot and just not charging or powering up the computer?

    Hi Citrineaux,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system not powering on in your Lenovo U510 laptop.
Try to connect with different adapter and check for the issue. Also connect the external monitor to check if the issue is no power or no display. Check if you are able to hear the windows login sound.
As this model has the inbuilt battery, please try to power on by reset button or novo button.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!
    Best regards,

  • No power - quick green flash when plugged

    okay,
it stopped working. I last used it a week ago. It was sitting in my briefcase and went to use it today. When I plugged it the light flashed green just briefly (once). No power is getting to the airport express. I tried other outlets, I tried other adapters. I tried a hard reset. I obviously can't soft reset the station because there is no power.
Please if anyone can help, please help.

What you describe is a classic symptom of a dead Airport Express (despite the brief green flash you see on the status light). This is not a fixable problem - you will need to call Applecare and arrange for a warranty replacement (assuming yours is still covered by the original one year warranty).

  • Ipod Nano will not power on, but works when plugged in. Any fix?

Hello, My wife's Ipod Nano I got her for her birthday a while back will not turn on.  She thought the battery was dead and hasn't used it in some time.  Now when she or I plug it in it comes on, you can see her music and connect to our Itunes but it will not turn on from battery.
It is NOT the hold/lock button on top I have tried everything.
I tried holding down the menu button and select button, still nothing.  What can I do?

If the iPod functions normally while plugged into an external power source of some sort (either USB port on your PC or Mac OR while plugged into a wall adapter), but doesn't when running on battery power, it's likely that the iPod's battery is shot.
You can have Apple or a third party repair center replace the battery for a flat fee. Otherwise, it's time to start saving for a new iPod or replacement.

  • I'm getting no power on the MacBook when plugged in.  The battery has drained.

The battery has drained on my MacBook and the power cord does not seem to connect. The light on the plug does not light. I pulled the battery to reset and plugged it in again but it does not charge or turn on. What can I do now?

    Try a different power adapter?

  • My iPad just all of a sudden turn to black and now won't open. It is on as it is beeping. Doesn't make sound or power symbol come on when plugged in. How can this be fixed?

Can any one help or tell me what to do to fix this? iPad just went to black screen and won't light up. It is on and is charged.

Have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to boot up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo will hopefully appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • External Drive - Power Supply Problem

    Hi All,
I have a problem with my Lacie External HD, i know it's not an Apple product but it is used with my Apple machines and formatted for Apple OS. Also the folks here are very knowledgeable.
    I have a Lacie D2 Triple Interface http://salestores.com/stores/images/images_747/301146U.jpg
The drive is not powering up, I have read online that they are know to have Power supply issues since mine went down. I have used the D2's power cable to power up my other external Lacie Mini drive and it is fine. So i can rule the power cable out the equation.
The tiny green light on the power supply is flickering when plugged into the D2 drive.
No blue light on the drive either.
I am prepared to open the drive up and try to fix the power supply, but is there any online guide to doing this? I can't find anything!
Any advice / help is appreciated.
    cheers

First thing to try is see if LaCie will replace the power brick, and that is what most people mean by "power supply" issues.
The other is how LaCie products tend to disrupt FW ports and cause problems, which is something that they are also prone to, should not, and don't find with others.
There use to be more attention to hot-swapping FW cable and Isolate brand or feature to prevent a FW port or device from being 'fried' by hot-swapping or plugging in a hot cable.
I'd move my drives to either another Firewire product, or more to native SATA.
    http://www.macsales.com/firewire/
Also, the ability to use USB/FW/eSATA (quad interface) means there is a bridge, and that in itself can impose a limit on I/O and how well a drive can talk to the other end. Drives today are faster than even FW800 can deliver.

  • Fan noise when I Target Disk Mode - power supply or 500 GB drive, or RAM?

I have a Revision B iMac G5 which falls squarely in the power supply replacement program and has had the power supply replaced twice. I'm wondering if my extra RAM, or larger hard drive could be to blame for the fan speeds upramping at random during normal operation, and always when I Target Disk Mode the machine. I have a Western Digital WDC WD5000KS-00MNB0
and two 1 GB RAM modules with the following spec PC3200U-30330.
Before I try to pin down the cause one by one, has anyone noticed whether there are 500 GB drives on these Macs which will not up the fan speeds? Has anyone noticed whether target disk mode on these models will not increase the fan speeds when RAM is upgraded to 2 GB?

I have the same iMac as yours. Changed the original 80 gig hdd to a 250 gig. Both drives are seagate barracudas. I also upgraded the memory to 2gigs. The fan noise was terrible.
6 months later a ram module gives up the ghost. I originally thought hard drive, so purchased a Western digital 500 gig WDC WD5000AACS-00ZUB0. (The green power series).
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=338
    Fans very quite. still waiting for the replacement ram module;
to see if extra ram will increase fan noise

  • Replaced power supply, G5 still dead - now what?

I recently posted that my wife's G5 2.0 (June 2004) had made a loud pop followed by a burning odor, and the consensus on the forum seemed to be that the power source had died. I just replaced the power source, but when I tried to fire up the computer got no results; no light, no chime, nothing. The one thing that the computer IS doing now that it did not after the "popping" incident is that when I turn on the power strip that the computer plugs into, the computer makes a small clicking sound, like a switch being flipped, that it also made before (but not after) the popping incident.
Before taking everything apart and looking to see where I might have screwed up I'd appreciate any advice as to where I should look first. I thought the disassembly and reassembly went pretty smoothly, so I'm a bit bummed at the lack of a positive result (except for the clicking noise being back).
Probably not relevant, but I was interested to see that the power source I pulled from the computer was made by Lite On, so perhaps it had been replaced before I bought it 4 years ago.

So here's where I am now. I disassembled the computer to the point of pulling the heat sinks so I could see the connections to the power supply, except for the plug that sits under the supply and would require pulling the PS out to check. All connections look good. I also looked at the connections from the "start button" back to the boards, and they looked/felt solid.
I did find the SMU reset button that BDAqua mentioned, and that I hadn't found before. I put the good battery out of my own computer in, pushed the SMU reset button, then plugged in and tried to start. No success; no light or any sound when pushing the startup button.
Any ideas what to try next? Could something else have fried when the power supply went? Or could the original popping noise and burning smell been caused by something else entirely? Do I need to pull the power source to make sure the final connection is good? I sure THOUGHT I plugged it together well.
On the positive side, I've gotten really fast at taking the computer apart....
