Power Supply Confusion ...Please Help.

So I will admit to not being able to understand the couple of guides on this forum concerning choosing a power supply ...they are REALLY wordy with ALOT of info that honestly seems irrelavant while not exactly dealing with how to choose (alot of bias over single vs mutliple rail and preferred brands).  While I aprreciate knowing what PSU's people with money and expereince can afford I am simply trying to find out the minumum so I can choose a little higher rated to maintaining capacitor life.
I would like to ask if the current power supply I have will be sufficient (for at least a month) to the system Im building for mom.  Here are the components Im working with:
MSI 880GM-E41 w/HDMI
AMD PhenomII x2 560 BE (Calisto 3.3 GHz AM3 80w)
4GB GSkill Ripjaw Series (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
500GB WD Caviar Blue (7200 rpm)
CD/DVD -RW (DL) Drive
DVD ROM
PSU - PowerUp LP6100D
DC Output 400w MAX (+5V=30A / +3.3V=28a / -12V=0.8a / +12V=25a / +5V sb=2a / -5V=0.3a)
Total Output 230w (this is really the only value Im confused over)
I have another PSU to use as well:
Tiger Pro LC-B350 ATX
MAX TOTAL WATTAGE 350W (+5V=35A / +3.3V=28a / -12V=0.8a / +12V=16a / +5V sb=2a / -5V=0.3a)
(I think this one might hold??)
At a guess, Im a little under my actual requirements, but Im confused as to whether I have a 400W or 230W PSU.  I have full intention on replacing the PSU but need to know if this one is suficient or if it will cause damage if used for only a month or less. I also understand brands mean alot but at this point am more concerned about sufficient power requirements.
*** I even tried the calculator available via the link but couldnt find my processor in the selection field.

Carvetii,
I wouldn't touch a $20 PSU if someone cut me a million dollar check to do so...well, I might touch it, but I wouldn't ever use it.  The PSU is sold for $20 for a reason...it is made with cheap components.  I hope yours works for you and doesn't have any issues--like take out your whole system.
MyWonThing,
What are your plans?  Do you plan on always using onbord video, or are you going to get a discrete VGA in the future?  Do you want a PSU to handle what you have now only or something that you can use in an upgrade, add-in VGA or when you build a newer system?  A Corsair CX400 should be plenty for what you have now, but, for future proofing, depending on your plans, you may want a Corsair CX600 or TX750(or bigger if you plan on a high-end VGA).
I understand why lower priced parts make people nervous, but I make hardly nothin as a disbaled veteran.  My plans for the described setup are so a 60+ year old can check email, etc.  NOTHING TO MUCH BEYOND THAT.  If I do add a VGA card it will simply be to allow for dual monitor output and will not be chosen for high end graphics capbility.  I dont mind spending as much as $40 for a reliable PSU but again, I get about nothing per month, no overtime ever, and do not have the luxury to choose a high end power supply, nor will this system ever be taxed enough to matter.
BTW...Price has VERY little to do these days with reliability  .  The current MoBo Im using I got new, for cheaper than most others on the market when obtained and it is not going to be fully retired but used as a *nux set up  , as it still runs like a champ (  OORAH MSI!!!  ).  Its still pretty much a stable board, just time to upgrade for OS compatibilities.  Also, take a look a t the PS3  .  Very expensive (especially at release) yet some of the cheapest components and solder out there were used , and its just gotten cheaper(the parts).  I know some of the components in said console ARE high quality but there is still alot of other crap that the manufacturer simply skimped on  , for whatever reason but none the less, they went with very inferior parts.
So with all that being said, Im AM NOT concerned about brand.  This is something I will research.  I was confused as to whether I had a 400W or 230W PSU, but Im pretty sure its a 230W (if Im wrong let me know on PSU#1).
I am more interested in the minimum power rating required for listed set-up.  NOT BRANDS for it.

While I wont be using the minimum , it will help a fixed income veteran possibly save money from getting more than this needs .

  • Power supply question, please help!!!

I think I need a new power supply, but I want to make sure I get a good one. I'm currently running a no name 400w that came with the case and I'm having a problem with the computer rebooting while running 3D Apps, such as games. I have been having this problem for a while now and have been replaceing/upgrading parts (motherboard, video card, & RAM) as I have the money, but it always does it. The only thing I can think of is the power supply, so I want to buy a new one. I can get a Thermaltake Purepower 420w for a good price but i want to make sure it power my system.
    The Thermaltake PSU specs are:
    +5V = 40A
    +3.3V = 30A
    +5V & 3.3V Max = 220W
    +12V = 18A
    +5VSB = 2A
    My current system specs are:
    MSI KT6 Delta LSR Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU with retail HSF (Will get a 2800+ next week)
    Kingmax 512Mb PC3200 CL 2.5 RAM

Sounds pretty good... The main consideration is the amps developed on the 12v rail, anything over 18a is cool.  This PSU develops 26a so no probs.
One thing though, don't try running a large amount of internal peripherals (Hard drives, cd rom drives, dvd drives etc.).  If you do you will need more watts
    Good luck
Sorry My Bad.  Gomerpile is right, for that AGP card you will need 430 watts minimum, I had similar probs trying to run my 9700 pro with a dodgy PSU

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

    Hello CTGame,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s a grayed out song in your iTunes library that can’t be played or downloaded again like other past purchases. Try taking a look at the article linked below and verify the computer is authorized to play that content.
How to troubleshoot iTunes Match - Apple Support
    Songs appear to be missing
Songs containing DRM (Digital Rights Management) might not appear in iCloud, or might appear grayed out. This can occur if your computer is not authorized to play that content. Try authorizing your computer, then manually update iTunes Match. To determine what Apple ID your computer needs to be authorized for to play a specific song:
Locate and select the song in your iTunes library.
    Choose File > Get Info.
In the Summary tab, locate the Account Name field in the right column. Write it down.
    Click OK.
Choose Store > Authorize this Computer.
Type in the account name from the Summary field and enter its password. Click Authorize.
Choose Store > Update iTunes Match.
    So long,
    -Jason

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

From your description it appears that the iPod is on like it showing something on the screen. In that case let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try a rest restore and other things again.
If the iPod returns to the same conditions then it is time for an appoitment at the Genious Bar of an Apple store.

  • Power supply fan dead - help? (400mhz AGP G4)

    Hello!
Unfortunately, my PowerMac G4, a 400mhz, AGP Sawtooth model, has a dead fan.
Over the last few weeks, I've noticed that my G4 has been running quite hot. I figured it was due to the hot dorm room that it's being used in. Then, I noticed that when it booted up, it would occasionally make a vibrating, or rattling noise - I figured the fan was wobbling. Since air was comming out of the fan opening at the top, I didn't worry about it.
Today, I used the "Temperature Monitor" widget to check the temperature of my SMART Hard drive (the G4 itself is not sensed). It was 133 degrees!!! This is the bay on the back-right, just under the CPU fan. I looked at the fan again - not much airflow. I pulled out a flashlight and pointed it in, and the Fan that's inside the power supply unit is dead.
So, how can I fix it? It's far far too hot, so it's not usable until I can cool it off. The first idea I had was to take a particularly powerful desk fan, and make a paper "tube" that connects both to the G4 and back of the fan - so it'll pull the hot air out. Needless to say, this is not a good log-term plan as it's easy to fall apart and will have leaks, but it works for now. I realize you can buy power supplies, but for ~$100, it's far too much for the old G4.
Second idea: The fan is inside the "non-user servicable" power supply, but it's also next to the back of the G4 - right inside what appears to be a panel that holds the power supply in. At the very least, I'd like to make sure that the cable is attached and not loose, but I have to open the back. Is that possible or safe? If so, can I replace the fan?
My third idea was to attach an extra fan to the inside of the G4, on the outside of the power supply - pushing in. Unfortunately, the IDE cable from the DVD drive is in the way, and there's not much room for a fan. Plus, there's no fan power supply. Is it possible to convert an ATA power plug (there are 7!) to a fan-power supply? I'd require a small circuit and a lot of resistors, obviously! If so, what would I need to do to convert it?
    Thanks a bunch,
    -Dan
    15" 1.67 Powerbook G4 (Jan 2005), 400 mhz AGP Sawtooth G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4G Clickwheel and 5G Vid iPods, 2G iPod shuffle

    Thanks!
Interesting, this "Piggy back power adapter" will allow me to plug the fan into one of the ATA/IDE cables? Or do you mean the extra port on the power supply? (it has one plug for the outlet>G4, then another to support something like a monitor or similar) The G4 has a DVD burner, but no ZIP drive, so this is quite do-able if it uses the ATA power.
When you say "lower rear", do you mean at the bottom? Below the power supply, to the right of the PCI slots? If so, this is the inflow for the CPU fan! I can understand mounting it outside the current outflow-vent for the dead power supply fan, although I'm not sure the best way to proceed with attaching the fan.
Another question: what tools and supplies will I need? I may need to remove the plastic cover on the back of the G4 - the one that is outside the power supply - as there's a gap between the gray plastic and metal chassis that lets air from outside the machine come in. The screws for this cover use a funky, hexagonal screwdriver. If I need to take this cover off, what kind of screwdriver will I need? Also, should the fan not include screws/etc, what's the best method to attach it? Glue?
Secondly, to cut a hole in the G4, will I need some variety of drill? I don't have one, so i'll have to borrow one... Since there's nothing in the ZIP slot, I can run a cable out through here (assuming it's long enough), and make a new bezel to keep the airflow inside intact.
Ah! One other (somewhat related) question: my USB 2 card includes a power adapter, for use when several un-powered devices (flash drives) are attached. It works just fine with a flash drive and a small media reader, but it's slow to sense the drives - I think it's low on power. Unfortunately, this power plug uses the same variety of plug as the floppy disk drives found on many win-boxes - of which the G4 possesses none. Is there an adapter/cable for this purpose?
Thanks, this is a HUGE help, I appreciate it.
    -Dan

  • How can I create a new iCloud account on a preowned phone (with that persons account signed on) without deleting their whole account entirely (on all devices)? Totally confused, please help:-(

My mum has upgraded to the iPhone 5, she has given me her 4S with a new contract etc. the problem is all her contacts are still on here and calendar dates etc . All from her iCloud account. I have my own account but I don't know how to get my phone on that without deleting her iCloud account entirely and from all devices and her new phone. Please help, I'm probably confusing things more but I really need some help

Just delete her iCloud account from (now) your iPhone 4s - doing so will delete it from your phone and your phone only.  It will do nothing to any of her devices with her iCloud account set up on them.
Then login in with your iCloud account login to set up your iCloud account on that iPhone 4S.
If you want to set up the iPhone 4s with a clean slate, just delete her iCloud account, then go into general settings, under the reset tab and select "erase all content and settings".  Then run through the activation and setup dialogues with your own information.

  • Please please help:my iPhone 3GS 32gb on iOS 6.0.1keeps turning off unexpectedly even when charge is 100% and cannot power on unless connected to power...please help here

Please help here...the iPhone doesn't turn on unless connected to power

Take it in to an Apple Store if you can.  The genius bar can very quickly test if it is just the battery showing its age or not.  If it is the battery, you can get it replaced through Apple
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/replacements.html
Depending on how it has been used though, it may not be the battery.  My old iPhone 32GB 3Gs is still good for about 6-7 hours of continuous use (as an iPod touch these days) and it was bought new in 2009 shortly after the 3Gs became available at AT&T stores.  So yours might be experiencing some hardware failure not the actual battery itself.

  • Need G4 Powerbook power supply replacement. Help?

I need a replacement for my G4 Powerbook power supply. My currrent one (over 2.5 years old) has a 'short' in it. Can anyone recommend where I can find either resonably priced:
    1) A factory 'Apple' powersupply exatly like the one I have or
    2) A '3rd party' powersupply.
    Thanks!

Not cheap - but i have a kensington adapter that includes connectors for AC, Car DC, and airplane power sockets.

  • Internet... im so confused, please help

I just bought my macbook and i am about to start my first year of college... i want wireless internet but have no clue how it works or what i need to buy? Do i need a modem, and if so what is it? i do not want dial up or i dont have cable to hook it up to.. please help!

    Hi
A modem is a small unit that converts either a cable or a phone signal to something that your computer can use. When you subscribe to a high-speed internet connection, the provider (eg, Verizon, Optimum, Road Runner) includes a modem with the package. It plugs into either your cable line or your phone line, and your computer (or wired router or wireless base station) plugs into it.
Your wireless card will only give you connection to the internet if you're in range of a wireless network. It's not like a cellphone where you can basically get service anywhere. For example, you can go to wi-fi cafes and get an internet connection (sometimes free, sometimes charged), but you usually can't stand in the middle of the street and connect to a public network (although some cities do have areas of public wifi, such as parks).
My recommendation is to check with your college to see what they offer in terms of internet connections.
    Good luck!
    Matt

I cant download anything including Updates, when i try to download a black box appears saying in 4 different languages that i have to power off the laptop using the button, and it freezes, so i have no option but to power off. Please HELP

Well, at least it's good that there are no hardware issues - that's a relief and one problem area that you can check off.
OK, so let's summarize so I can get a clear picture of what's going on. If you try to download something from your web browser, what happens? What if you try to download a small utility such as "EasyFind" from the App Store? Or is the problem specifically linked to downloading updates?
I'm just trying to get a feel for if anything really means anything?
Usually what you download from, say, a website, goes into your Downloads folder. It's the default folder for things like that. Apps from the App Store are downloaded to your Applications folder. And software updates are generally, I believe, held in a temporary folder so that they can be installed (in many cases) when you're asked to restart.
It could be something as simple as repairing permissions on your start-up disk. You're running Snow Leopard, right? (That's what your profile says.) Try opening Disk Utility from your Utilities folder, selecting your boot disk and try verifying permissions. If you come up with some errors, try repairing permissions. After that, go ahead and verify your boot disk - you won't be able to repair it at this point, but at least you can see if you have any errors.
Let me know about the anything and get back to me after you've verified and repaired permissions and verified your boot drive.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
