Power Supply for multiple Graphics Cards

I recently purchased an X1900 G5 Mac card. I now have my original (NVIDIA GEForce 6600LE) plus this new one. If I purchase yet another X1900, how do I get power to it? There is only one power jack on the mother board.
What are my options? Can my power supply support more caards? How do I connect them to the power supply? ATI pointed me to Apple support

Slot 1 (bottom) is the only slot designed for a high powered card. It is also the only 16 lane PCI-Express slot. The other slots have a power limit of 25 watts. Slot 3 is 8 lane, 2 and 4 are only 4 lane.
<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pci_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003937-DontLinkElem entID64>
Put the 1900 in slot 1 (bottom), and the 6600 in slot 3. Even if there was enough power for a second 1900, it would not have the bus bandwidth because there is only one 16x slot.

  • Power supply for AGP graphics - 20 pin vs 22 pin?

So, the power supply on my G4 Sawtooth (dual 450) is about half dead. I looked online, figured out which part I needed, and actually found one on Ebay. It was kinda easy. Then I took it to my Aunt's house (she's a tech) to install, and lo and behold... I have a 22 pin connector on my motherboard. The power supply (that everything online pointed to as the correct part) is a 20 pin. So of course, that isn't going to work.
I checked out everything again last night and all over the place I see that the Sawtooth has a 20 pin connector. Mine is 22, I swear... what in the ****??? Why the discrepancy? And does anyone need a 237W power supply?
    Thanks,
    Brooke
    12" PB 867, G4 Sawtooth D450, Indigo iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Gigabit G4, Digital Audio, Quicksilver and later Macs have a different power supply and motherboard that passes 28 Volts DC from the power supply to a connector for the ADC port graphics card. 28 VDC is passed to the Graphics card ADC port to power Apple's ADC monitors.)
If you are not using a ADC monitor, you might could cut off the connector from your existing supply & the purchased supply & connect the 22-pin connector to the purchased supply.
Here's some links of power supply sellers.

Not sure if the Apple Part #s are marked on your existing supply & purchased supply, but the links have the Apple Part#s for the various Mac models.

  • Dedicated power supply for multiple GPUs...

    Greetings,
I hoped and dreamed in running dual 5870s, but sadly you only run one 5870. I found this FSP Group Booster X5 450W Dedicated power supply in hopes to run dual 5870s (here is the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104054).
My question is "What do I need to put one in my Mac Pro?" "How easy is to instal?" "What cards can I power with this? example: like one 5870 is powered by the stock power supply and another 5870 by this dedicated power supply?" any other tips and recommendations are welcome.
    Thanks for your time,
    Lyon4a2

Thank you for your response however I would like someone to read my post and answer accordingly.
I am not in the market for two 5870's. As I stated in the paragraph regarding my specific situation I want to buy ONE card, a PC card, which I know will work if I use it solely in Windows. I want to retain the card I have for OSX, because I don't need to upgrade it, and install a second card. I will be switching between Windows and OSX using the bootcamp partition.
The second card requires TWO places to plug it in. The card I have is taking up one of the two slots for power I have available on the motherboard. Can I install the power supply mentioned in the above post, or perhaps some type of splitter cable that would allow me to plug it into the one power slot I have available (if even possible considering power requirements)?
Again, these will be two different cards, one for each system. I am not trying to connect the cards. I am not trying to run both at the same time.
I am obviously ignorant as to how this all works, which is why I am here. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Power available for GPU/graphics card/Quadro 4000

I need to upgrade to a Quadro 4000 GPU in order to use DaVinci Resolve on my Mac Pro.  DaVinci needs to graphics cards for full operation: the Quadro to process video and another card to actually run the displays (an Apple 30" Cinema Display and a 21" DVI monitor).
Any of the decently powerful cards I'm looking at require power from the mainboard -- which has two power outlets.  The Quadro 4000 requires both of them.
Is there another power source available somewhere inside the computer to run this second graphics card?  Or perhaps someone can suggest a good solid graphics card to run the two displays that does not require power?

And your Mac running OS X will not accept the Quadro 4000.

Same card on Amazon for $790 with MacPro3,1 or later
    http://www.amazon.com/PNY-DisplayPort-Profesional-Graphics-VCQ4000MAC-PB/dp/B004 CRS78O/
There are some helpful comments there like this one:
i work in 3D visual effects, post production, and graphics.
this video card works fantastic under Windows 7. the Windows drivers for the Quadro are finely tuned and allow particular applications to take full advantage of the video card.
under OS X, the card is NOT worth the premium cost. my ATI 5870 performs better in applications that the Quadro 4000 is suppose to work better with. for the life of me, i can't understand why Nvidia/Apple can't get these drivers right under OS X. its the same story, Quadro release after Quadro release. Nvidia and Apple just don't seem to care. my current 2010 12-core Mac Pro might be my very last Apple desktop. i just can't justify the Apple tax anymore if Apple isn't going to provide basic stuff professionals need. it just seems like Apple is drifting farther and farther away from the professional market.....so disappointing.
another extremely annoying thing is that i can't have my ATI 5870 and Quadro 4000 running at the same time. the Mac Pro only has two 6-pin power cables!!!! what's with that!! are you kidding me??!!
So you need to look at a new Mac. Or running Windows. Or... something.
2008 brought with it EFI64 / UEFI which is what you would need right now. Had you waited back when you did buy your Mac Pro until March 2008.... you would really have been set as far as usiing Quadro or GTX 285 and having 64-bit EFI.  I just think this is another of those times.
Not everyone is ready to and running Lion, but Lion does have some support for the GTX 580, which is more power.

Why wait? Ivy Bridge from Intel in April will and has to arrive someday on Apple's desktop.
the GTX 680 arrives on 23rd, and AMD has their new line of GPUs, so something there.
Your GTX 285 no matter what, unless the seller isn't what he/you say they are, should work in Windows, Mac OR PC. I've used GTX 260 in my Mac Pro and in a PC with X58.
Vendors are coming out with Thunder storage arrays more so now, more for laptops and other systems, but there and using optical.
Given your needs etc I would find someone that wants your system and PowerPC etc and part with it. If you can't wait, or don't want "1.0" and want solid mature and known hardware, pick up one (you could even get the $2100 2.8 4-core ref'd model and do the W3680  6-core 3.33GHz  $599 yourself.
www.macperformanceguide.com has a number of tips. The guy is now running 100% SSDs with a pair of PCIe controllers populated with 1TB SSD modules on each, and 48GB RAM. 2010 lets you use 3 x 8 or 16GB RAM also.

  • Trouble configuring Xserver for multiple graphics cards

I suspect I have a fairly simple problem but am getting in over my head and need some help setting up a multihead X configuration.
I have a plain vanilla installation of Solaris 9 on an Ultra 60, 1.5GB, 2x450 MHz CPUs, originally configured with one Elite3D lite card in the 64 bit/66 MHz PCI slot as a single head installation. All ran fine.
I have now added a pair of Elite3D-m3 cards in the 2 UPA slots. At boot, the Elite3D in the first UPA slot comes up as the character mode console device and the OS boots normally up to the point of starting X/CDE desktop then defaults to the console login with " ...could not start X server..." error message .
I configured the Xservers file to include the two Elite as the default display :0.0 on /dev/fbs/afb0 and /dev/fbs/afb1, but on closer examination, found that the devices do not exist in /dev or /dev/fbs.
I do have a device /dev/fbs/ifb0 corresponding to the Expert3D lite card, known to function normally as a single headed machine.
    Here are the questions:
    1. How do I obtain and install the necessary device files, /dev/fbs/afb0 and /dev/fbs/afb1 to allow the two Elite3Ds to drive 2 monitors under X/CDE? What are the necessary packages needed to drive the Elite3Ds?
    2. In the meantime, how can I start the Xserver in the expert3D card? The Xserver will not start (gives errors) by simply defining :0.0 to be /dev/fbs/ifb0 (Expert3D lite) in /usr/dt/config/Xserver. This device is not the default Solaris character mode boot console device, so I am not sure how to set up the Xserver file to run the X session on this card **alone** to tide me over pending Elite3D's configured and running and the new monitors are delivered.
I recall that CDE and X require special consideration for this situation where the boot console device and the graphical device to run X are not identical. The Xservers file comments refer to this problem but I cannot seem to find sufficient documentation to figure out how to configure this situation.
I would like to avoid ripping out the two just installed cards to get back to the original configuration.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Please note the following erratum: The original configuration was with an Expert3D lite in the 64bit/66 MHz PCI slot, not an Elite3D. Thanks.

  • Power supply for a loaded Sawtooth?

I'm in the process of upgrading my G4-450 Sawtooth for some digitizing my old collections of audio and video. The processor is the next step, probably an OWC 1.3 GHz. I already have USB-2 and Firewire PCI cards for a 250 GB external drive, iPod, a few other devices. The optical drive is upgraded to a Pioneer DVR-110, and the internal drives are an 80GB WD and a 120 GB Seagate. My ultimate goal was to add a new drive controller and two 320GB drives so I don't spend all my time writing CD and DVD backups (yes, I really do have that many records and videos), and then possibly a new video card. From what I've read here I will be seriously taxing my power supply. I haven't been able to find a good link on what kind of power the drives are likely to draw, but from the sound of it it is the video card that is likely to be the big problem. Any good links where I can find the power consumption for drives and cards?
I know, I should buy a new G5 or Intel mini, but the G5 is too expensive and I'd need too many external drives in addition to the mini to make it any more cost effective.

I've struggled with this a bit. So far I have had decent results with an old Dual turntable run through an old stereo to a line level plug into the mic jack on the G4. The problem was that the line level input meant you had to keep the input volume very low. Also my old stereo was a bit out of date, and decaying, but still had phono plugs. Since I was still at the experimental stage I was going to buy a Griffin iMic (highly though of on these boards), but realized that my PB had a line level input. I also had to replace my turntable at least temporarily with a new Sony model which meant that the phono pre-amp it had allowed me to use a newer receiver. I've been using Spin Doctor and running their filters, but frankly the last few I've tried on my PB and new turntable-receiver combo have been so good I am thinking of saving them as-is (with a mp3 for iTunes in addition). Hint, use an air-duster to clean the record before playing, it cleans amazingly well, almost no pops. You almost forget how rich the sound on a good turntable was. Longer term I'm getting a Canopus ADVC110 Converter for my videos (also highly recomended on these boards), so I may see how running through that works.
I'm still figuring this out, and will probably be back asking for advice here again, or offering as I figure things out. This will be a very long project since every conversion requires actually playing the album. I estimate my complete collection at well over 500 albums, not counting my father's collection and the old '78's stored at my mother's house.

No, Keynote takes over all the screens when presenting, and I'd think if you tried to edit in FCP when you were also running a show (if you could) it would likely bog BOTH programs down badly.
You could export your presentations into QT and have the QT player running on one screen, but still, if you fire up FCP, everything's a different ball game then.
I suggest leaving the FCP system on its own, don't try to do multiple things with it at the same time.

  • Multiple Graphics Cards Inquiry

Im curious how OSX can handle multiple graphics cards efficiently?
like a x1900 and my 8800 or even a x1900 and a 38x0 and 8800 but the drives in windows dont allow for them to all coexist ?
im just curious how its so easily "PnP" with graphics cards and drivers? do they just get assigned to whats installed and thats it? i take it OSX is preloaded with an assortment of drivers?

OSX includes drivers for all the hardware used in Apple computers (and for many printers). At boot times, drivers are loaded for all the hardware devices that are detected.

  • FCP 7 Multiple Graphics Cards & 3 Displays

With FCP 7 (Studio 3) has Apple fixed the issue that you can't have multiple graphics cards and more than 2 displays as was the problem with prior versions?

I did the typical; post a question then play around with the problem routine here.
I've found a solution where i put the "playout monitor" on the same card as screen 1. move screen 2 to another card and make the relevant adjustments to the displays arrangement panel so everything is the same layout as before. FCP now plays out to the correct monitor it seems it can't handle sending to other cards.
    i'm running 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6

  • New Antec power supply for p7-1003w doesn't fit?!

I got a new power supply for my p7-1003w tower only to discover it would not fit. It was getting caught somehow so I looked and noticed it was not the supply itself but the black plastic bezel piece around the AC connection hole.
Has anyone else faced this? The original power supply doesn't have a bezel, but all the Antec supplys I see do.
If you've had this problem of the bezel beign too big what did you do bend your back plate? lol or is their a certian brand of supplys that don't have the big bezel around the connector hole.
    Thanks!

    Hi there everyone
I am looking forward to buy a power supply for my canon, do you know where I can find it or which one should I buy? Please recommend....thanks.

Hi bebefle_89! Every model of camera uses a different power supply, so we will need to know the exact model of your camera to be able to answer that question accurately, but for EOS cameras you can get them here for PowerShot cameras you can get them here.

Because the XP597A3 (actually any of these product numbers; XP597AA, XP597A3, XP597AS) is a HP 2011x 20" LCD/LED widescreen monitor. The OP was looking for an A/C adapter power supply for the HP 2711x 27" LCD/LED widescreen monitor, which is product # XP600AA or XP600A3. The adapter power supply I linked to, is the correct part for the 2711x monitor.... that is why not those other parts.

  • Power Supply for Airport Extreme

    Hi
Does anyone know where I can get a new power supply for my airport extreme in the UK? Mine has died, and I don't really want to buy a whole new base station just because of the external supply. (I know the actual unit is working through plugging in a power supply from my other base station)
I tried Apple, who weren't really any help.
    Thanks in advance!
    Tom.

    Tom welcome to the discussions.
I would probably call the Apple number.
    1-800-MY APPLE
I am sure that they can point you in the right direction.
I am a little shocked that one of the Apple Retail stores can't offer you a Power Supply.
If all else fails, it sounds like you have tried an alternitve, if it works use it, until you can get a replacment.
