"Power surge on Hub Port" Message

I had to order a new replacement iPod and when I plugged it into the computer after fully charging it. A "Power surge on hub port" bubble keeps popping up in the bottom left tray. I've tried to follow all of the iPod tutorials but nothing works...any suggestions?
Thanks for any help

This sounds like your computers problem then and not apples.
Adjusted the usb port properties? :s
If you're using Windows XP, maybe you should try uninstalling the usb ports then re-instaling them
on the start menu, right click "my computer" then click properties. Choose the "hardware" tab, then click "device manager"
Scroll to the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" at the bottom. expand it by clicking the + then right click the top usb item and uninstall it. Make your way down the remaining items and uninstall them. ((ONLY THE USB DEVICES!!!))
Once this is done, right click in the window and "scan for hardware changes". THen right click the usb devices with red crosses and choose the option to click "install" or "update driver"
This should restore origional settings to the devices and then all should work.

  • "Power Surge on Hub Port" Message doesn't go away...

    Hi guys,
I reset the port as recommended but the warning message window pops up again. I used PC doctor to diagnose the USB and it was OK. Though both of the usb port works (...it's a T43p) it keeps giving me the power surge message (so I started to keep it and minimize it).
Does anybody know how to solve this issue?
    Thanks

I am using iphone 5C when I use to data cable to charge it from my laptop I always get an error message saying 'Power Surge on hub port'. I am not able to charge my iphone at all. Please help

I have read that usb hubs usually have only 1 port at a high enough watts = volts x amps iPads need 10watt = 5v x 2 amps so when you use more devices it may share the power so I would buy a usb charger with 2+ amp ports if you want to just charge your devices the computer hub are not designed for that just communication

  • Power Surge On hub Port :(

when i plug my usb cord in. it says Power Surge On Hub Port, can anyone tell me how to solve this problem. it wont allow me to charge or put songs on my iPod. Help is greatly appreciated.

I have the same Multi-Burner drive, an X61s, and an X61. I don't get this message on any USB port. I also tried plugging it in with an audio CD already inserted so that it would draw power spinning up the disc right away.
Is it possible that you have other power-using USB devices plugged in, and the Multi-Burner just happens to be the last one plugged in, pushing the power use over it's limit?
If you get this message when the Multi-Burner is the only USB device plugged in, I think you have a hardware problem.

  • Power Surge on Hub Port: A USB Device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.

When I attempt to install an external DVD/CDRW I receive the following:
Power Surge on Hub Port: A USB Device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.
    I am forced to reset.

I would guess that your external DVD is drawing too much power from the USB port, and could be one of the older units; newer units are usually more power efficient. Such device usually come with a USB cable with two USB connectors that can draw power from two USB ports simultaneously. You may be able to get such cable separately but since the two USB ports are located at extreme ends in the S10, you may want to check that the cable come with the USB connectors with sufficient length to reach both the USB ports simultaneously.

  • IPod Shuffle (2nd Gen) ruined onboard USB hub (Power surge on hub port)

A user that I support fried his onboard USB hub on his laptop by plugging in his new iPod shuffle. Before doing this, everything else worked, but now, no USB devices will work.
When he tries to plug in his wireless keyboard/mouse receiver, it says "Power surge on hub port" as a popup balloon (this is Windows XP Pro) above the system tray. When he clicks on it, it says:
"A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device.
(The location of the device is shown in bold type)
To reenable the port, disconnect the hardware and click Reset. If you click close, the port will no longer function."
    Options: Reset, Close
Neither resetting the port nor rebooting the computer will resolve this problem. Most USB devices are not recognized at all (Windows does not respond to them and they are shown as Unknown Devices in the Device Manager).
This affects not only the USB port that the iPod Shuffle was initially connected to, but all the USB ports on the computer.
From everything that I can tell, the USB hub built into the motherboard is fried and needs to be replaced.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Is this something that Apple will admit to and pay for?

I called Applecare and they claim that an iPod Shuffle could not have done this because it never sends power over USB, but only charges. They said to contact the manufacturer of the computer.
I am not convinced of this claim, however. Possible defects in the product could still cause this, such as it creating a short circuit and having power channel from the USB hub back into itself.
This is just off the top of my head, but can any of you think of another explanation?
The timing of everything working before the iPod Shuffle was connected and nothing working after it was connected lays the blame squarely upon the iPod Shuffle. If there had been an issue with the motherboard or its USB hub, it would have shown up before; other USB devices that draw significant power never triggered such a hypothetical defect.
If anybody has another idea how the iPod Shuffle could have done this or knows of a way to convince Apple to take this seriously, please let me know.

  • Power Surge on Hub Port - Nokia E7

Please help me with my problem with Nokia E7. I have been using it since 4 years and never it gave such problem to me. Whenever i connect it to my PC it says power surge on USB hub. i took it to the technician and he said that the problem was with the problem was with the hardware i.e. the USB port. so i spent a thousand bucks in putting a new USB port and still it shows the same problem. my phone charger and the phone's USB wire doesnt work properly. even a small jerk disconnects the connection.
please value my time and money ur solutions are welcome !

    AJAKRE001,
An alternative way to connect your Nokia E7 to a Windows computer is through bluetooth. But I since assume you are also having problems charging the phone so the only recourse is to send it to a Nokia Care Centre for further device evaluation.

  • Power surge on hub point

I have a 60GB Ipod colour and use it to save my photos. I have just come back from Athens - which supplies 260v/50Hz power. Now I am back in England (240V/50Hz), I get an error when I plug the Ipod into my Win XP Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. The error is: Power surge on hub point. There is an instruction to click on the error notice, but the mouse is disabled while this notice is displayed. The Ipod is working fine and is showing all the pics I took in Athens and saved to it, as well as playing the music I downloaded to it before I left for Greece. The Ipod is using the latest V7.0.2 software. I have performed a reset by switching the Hold key, as well as a reboot using the Menu/centre switch. No result. Any ideas, please?

    Sorted!
I'm not sure how this worked, but the Ipod is working fine on the port now. I changed to mouse from the hub to the PC, so I could click the notice when it came up, AND I put the Ipod on the charger until the Ipod said CHARGED.
I have plugged the Ipod back into the hub and it's been accepted, with no errors. AND I have access to my pics - thank goodness!

  • IPOD causes a power surge on every port on the computer

My ipod died and was replaced with a new 40GB model. Now, it causes a power surge everytime I attach it to a port. Of course, Dell says its a problem with the ipod. I don't know what to do? Has anyone had this problem? How was it solved?

That's what I figured but I wanted to be sure. The iPod charges while it is connected to the USB port. The ports of many notebook computers and most unpowered hubs supply less power than the iPod requires - hence the message. You'll need to get a powered USB hub (one that has its own power supply). They can be found at Radio Shack, as well as just about any place that sells consumer electronics for as little as $15.

  • Ipod exceeds power limits of its hub port

My ipod stopped working- completely dead- after I got this message from windows---- "POWER SURGE ON HUB PORT A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device."
    The troubleshoot showed nothing.
It was the first time I used the port on the front of my computer.
    I tried the 5 R's.
Also, I took the USB cable to Best Buy- they said part of the port from the computer had come off inside the ipod port connector.
I have a new cord and a AC adapter. I tried charging on both- still no response.
If the ipod is dead and does not show up anywhere- it doesnt do any good to retry the 5 R's, does it?????
Does anyone know where I can take it to have it checked????

Power surge might have hurt something inside iPod. If under warranty contact Apple. Likely you are stuck though if the port was at fault and not the iPod.

  • Power Surge UMTS KPN dongel T430 with Windows XP

I have Windows XP SP3 installed on a Lenovo T430, now I get the message: Power Surge on Hub Port: A USB Device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.
On Windows 7 the UMTS dongel works good.
How can I use Windows XP with servicepack 3 and the KPN UMTS dongel?

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that you are getting a message “Power Surge on Hub Port: A USB Device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port” in your Lenovo ThinkPad T430.
I would suggest you to go to Control panel -> Device manager -> uninstall all the devices under Universal serial bus controllers, then restart the computer to let XP install all the USB ports again. Later, find the chipset and USB drivers from Lenovo support page and install them.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Power surge to a USB port

I plugged my brand new iPhone 5 USB cable into my laptop and it displayed a message about a power surge to that port. i dismissed the message and removed the cable. Now none of my USB ports are working.

Are you using an official Apple wall charger and an official apple usb adaptor? Some of the unofficial ones have been known to do that. If it's an official one take it down to the Apple store to get a replacement. If the problem persists it could be related to your phone.

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!
