Power Surge Problem

I had an external HD connected to my iBook via firewire. The external HD experpienced a power surge and took out everything connected to the system.
Now my iBook turns on but won't startup.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Thanks

  • USB Power surge problem on my P35 Neo F

    Hi,
I finally got my BIOS problems solved and have already installed everything and almost everything is ok with my system...
BUT. There is still the problem with the "Power surge in USB hub". I don't know whether this is the right forum for this but I'll explain my situation and maybe someone can help, or at least move this to the right forum.
So, first of all, when trying to do the usb flasher bios update I came across the problem where the computer totally freezes when you put a memory stick to a usb hub. That I cleared by removing the wires leading to the extrenal case usb ports, which weren't working anyhow. After updating the bios, I started working normally and thought that everything is ok with my usb wireless desktop devices and my external HDD connected. Yesterday if I turned the external HDD on, the power surge notification would pop up. Anyhow, today everything was ok until I plugged the HDMI-DVI cable for my 2nd monitor, a LCD Tv, in my computer, after which the power surge notification popped up once again. When I'm using my second monitor, it works ok for about 5 minutes after which the 2nd computer loses the signal and turns itself off. I realised that yesterday I had the same cable contacted so there must be something there.
Long story short, do YOU think that this power surge has something to do with my Akasa PSU not providing suffient power? That would sound like the most simple solution as when I contact another device to my computer, the power surge occurs, as well as the fact that the 2nd monitor, the LCD TV, turns itself off after a few minutes of signal..
OR, would it be a possibility to buy an active USB hub, which was suggested to someone earlier, for the HDD drive, which actually has an external power source of it's own. Could the external active HUB be the solution or should I just go and buy a new PSU, which would be a lot more expensive and to be honest, might not even be the solution..
I must also point out that with my previous computer, the HDD drive, the wireless desktop and the HDMI-DVI cables were always connected at the same time without any sort of problems, so could it even be a problem with the Mobo?
Sorry for my english if it's unclear, but if someone knows how to help, please do so.
    Thanks!

Ok, so the best bet is that it's the PSU, I gotta start searching for one then.
Just to doublecheck, here are the voltages for my psu
voltage regulation minimum load maximum load  peak load
    +3.3V        ±5%         0.5A           30.0A            -
    +5V           ±5%         0.3A           30.0A            -
    +12V1        ±5%         1.0A           14.0A          16.0A
    +12V2        ±5%         1.0A           15.0A           -
    -12V         ±10%         0.0A          0.5A             -
    +5Vsb        ±5%          0.0A          2.0A            2.5A
I have absolutely no idea what the figures mean, so can someone explain me the +12V voltages in this SPU, so that I won't go and buy a new PSU in vain.
Thanks in advance for your great assistance!

  • Won't let me copy to hard drive post power surge

Ok, to make a long story short, I hope, I had an electrical fire (everyone's ok) that involved and destroyed my laptop's power cord and as part of that fun I seem to have had a power surge that has reset some of the defaults on my computer but not all. Some of the folders I created prior to the surge are gone, etc. The only real problem is that the permissions on my internal hard drive seem to have been reset. Below are the things it will and will not allow me to do.
-- I cannot copy files from a flash drive, cd or external hard drive to the internal hard drive. I get that circle with a line through it. Clicking and dragging, copy/paste, nothing works.
-- I can move stuff that is already on the internal hard drive from folder to folder.
-- I can save email attachments to the internal hard drive.
-- I can copy stuff from internal the hard drive to a flash drive, cd or external hard drive.
-- I can read the files on flash drives, cds or external hard drives, such as a movie file, just fine, they run without a glitch. The peripherals did not suffer any resets as a result of the fire/power surge. When it happened the computer shut down automatically and I think that saved the accessories from being damaged because the computer is the only thing that showed any changes after it happened.
And before someone asks, yes, I checked, I have 40 GB of HD space so it's not a space issue.
I right clicked on MAC HD and did the Get Info and looked at the details of the permissions on various files and tried shifting some of those around but even though it says Read and Write it still won't let me copy to the internal drive from other sources. Interestingly when I got to the User file it was marked Read Only but changing it to Read Write didn't help. Something I did once worked but then it stopped working so I have no idea what it was. I put everything back the way it was. Could somebody please help me? My computer is old and dieing a slow painful death but if I can make it last a little longer that will make my life so much easier. Please let me know if you need any system info or anything.
    *Thank you!!*
PS. I'm not posting this on the peripheral thread because the problem isn't really the peripherals, it's the system not wanting to play nice with others, so that's why I put this over here.

Hi. It's not a dumb question, cause if it is then my answer is really stupid, what's a repair permission? lol I don't know what that is so I guess the answer is no, though I can guess from the name it's a program to fix permissions if the files get messed up? I knew how to change the permissions in Get Info but past that I was getting into things I don't know so I figured it was time to ask for help or I'd be on here asking how to un-erase a hard drive. jk So how would I do that and is there anything else I should do?
Sorry if my initial post was a bit defensive. I had a moderator give me flak over some minor thing on a post once and I was supremely frustrated with this problem. Sorry if it came out kinda angry. I appreciate any help you can give me.

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!

  • Power Surge on Hub Port - Nokia E7

Please help me with my problem with Nokia E7. I have been using it since 4 years and never it gave such problem to me. Whenever i connect it to my PC it says power surge on USB hub. i took it to the technician and he said that the problem was with the problem was with the hardware i.e. the USB port. so i spent a thousand bucks in putting a new USB port and still it shows the same problem. my phone charger and the phone's USB wire doesnt work properly. even a small jerk disconnects the connection.
please value my time and money ur solutions are welcome !

    AJAKRE001,
An alternative way to connect your Nokia E7 to a Windows computer is through bluetooth. But I since assume you are also having problems charging the phone so the only recourse is to send it to a Nokia Care Centre for further device evaluation.

  • Secondary Socket Fried by Power Surge/Cut?

Hope someone may be able to help me on this one. Wednesday night had a power surge/short power cut here and discovered my second socket was dead. Thought this would fix itself but have found today that the socket is still dead.
Wouldn't normally be bothered but my Sky box is wired into this socket and obviously this is soon going to cause me problems as it's part of my contract to have the box connected to a telephone line (don't use the socket for anything other than Sky and an old telephone for contacting the electric board when we have power cuts - have at least one a month here - oh the irony!).
Could this power surge (lights brightened and flickered before the power cut) have caused the damage to the socket? Has anyone had this problem before and been able to get the electric board to cough up if the surge is what has caused this damage?
Would appreciate any help as am sure Sky will be contacting me soon to query the missing telephone line connection.
Many thanks to the guys out there!

I thought this was supposed to be a forum for people helping each other out with valid and useful advice - not being facetious and puerile. I can only wish on you the electrical outcomes I have had to suffer in the past here - I have claimed against the electrical board in the past but was hoping for sensible advice on this particular occasion. My experience with the electricity board in the past has been less than helpful if not down right evasive and lengthy. I was hoping to get advice from someone who has been in this position before so that I can make a decision based on fact not speculation!
If you have nothing useful to say, don't say it! Your tag says no to nuisance calls - suggest you try to stop being one yourself!!

Actually I thought it was good advice, Put In a Claim, it wont cost you anything.
As regards my as you say TAG, it's not its a sig, and may I say you should also stop being your SIG as well.
Just added you to my Block list, no point in trying to help you.
    bye bye.

  • I have windows 7, had a power surge that shut down my desktop pc, restored to a prev date, firefox was installed then, now I can't uninstall it. How do I uninstall it now?

Hi I tried firefox as a browser but didn't keep it. Uninstalled it and put explorer 9 back on. Tonight a power surge knocked out my desktop pc totally. When I got it back on, there were start up problems. Start up repair restored to a different date, and it happened to be the date when I installed firefox. I activated explorer 9 again, then tried to uninstall firefox, but the uninstall won't work from the control panel. How do I uninstall firefox now?

If the Control Panel method doesn't work ([https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Uninstalling%20Firefox Uninstalling Firefox | How to | Firefox Help]), try the program '''helper.exe''' in this folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\uninstall

  • Has there been trouble with the charger.  I am getting to re-order but the one i had the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?

Has there been any trouble with the charger?  I am getting ready to re-order but the one i had.... the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?  Thanks.

Can you also see blackening in the power jack on the PowerBook? If so, I would be worried that the surge also damaged the computer/
Does the computer run OK on just the battery? If it is working on battery power, that limits the number of things inside the computer that could have been fried.
If the computer is severely damaged by the surge, it's not worth repairing. However, a couple of posters in Apple forums said their homeowners'/renters' insurance paid them replacement value of their computer after power surge damage due to known problems on the grid, like the huge power outage that hit the SW Untied Stats and part of Mexico yesterday.

  • Post-power surge question. Please help.

I just had a power surge and my G5 iMac shut off. However, my external hard drive did not. I restarted my computer and the external hard drive is not appearing on the desktop. I don't know what to do. Should I simply shut off the external hard drive and restart it? I would really like not to tank the external hard drive. We're supposed to getting high winds tonight from Hurricane Earl, so I need to get this straightened out rather quickly so I can shut everything down properly.
I will appreciate any help or suggestions.

It's likely that the external drive isn't 'mounted' and also possible that any firmware in the drive (depending on the model) may be wedged. A simple restart (power off, then back on) will probably solve the problem. If you're worried the Mac really did mount the drive but just isn't showing it on the desktop, you can check.
Open "Disk Utility" -- it's in the Applications -> Utilities folder. The left margin of Disk Utility will show all local drives and filesystems visible to the Mac whether the filesystems are actively mounted or not.
If the external drive does not show up in Disk Utility's list, then the filesystem isn't mounted. Power off the drive. Wait several seconds to allow it to spin down. Then power it back up. It should appear on the Mac after a short delay.
If the external drive is formatted with an HFS+ "Journaled" filesystem, your drive should be fine (no corruption) even though it suddenly lost power. If it happened to be in the process of performing a 'write' (e.g. saving a file) then that file may be incomplete, but the drive & filesystem itself should be fine.

  • Power surge to a USB port

I plugged my brand new iPhone 5 USB cable into my laptop and it displayed a message about a power surge to that port. i dismissed the message and removed the cable. Now none of my USB ports are working.

Are you using an official Apple wall charger and an official apple usb adaptor? Some of the unofficial ones have been known to do that. If it's an official one take it down to the Apple store to get a replacement. If the problem persists it could be related to your phone.

  • Power Surge on USB hub port

I bought a Nano about a month ago. When I first hooked it up to my laptop, it worked fine. Now I can't get it to even connect. When I plug in the USB cable to any of my USB ports (with or without the Nano attached), I get the pop-up on the task bar that says there is a "Power surge on the USB hub port" and that I need to reset the port. I am assuming that there is some setting somewhere that needs to be changed, but I just can't find it in any of the Apple Support pages on the web.
Does anyone have any ideas for me?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Hi - Had the same 'Power Surge on USB' problem - thought it was curtains as I could do nothing to get my 18 month old nano to sync or even charge from my computer. I did however manage to get it to charge from the mains with someone elses charger so I tried their sync cable into my computer and - hey presto! - everything back to normal! Then re-tried my sync cable and again 'Power Surge.....' - so maybe a new cable is the answer - hope it works for you - Good Luck

  • IPOD causes a power surge on every port on the computer

My ipod died and was replaced with a new 40GB model. Now, it causes a power surge everytime I attach it to a port. Of course, Dell says its a problem with the ipod. I don't know what to do? Has anyone had this problem? How was it solved?

That's what I figured but I wanted to be sure. The iPod charges while it is connected to the USB port. The ports of many notebook computers and most unpowered hubs supply less power than the iPod requires - hence the message. You'll need to get a powered USB hub (one that has its own power supply). They can be found at Radio Shack, as well as just about any place that sells consumer electronics for as little as $15.

  • Power Surge on Airport Extreme

Recently we had a 3 power spikes in a row. After those spikes our Airport Extreme is now operating very warm and we lost some range in which the Airport broadcast. Is there any diagonstics to see if the unit is damaged? Would those spikes cause the above conditions?
I have tried power reseting the unit but still having the above problems.
    Thanks.

    ishikm, welcome to the discussions!
Any type of power surge or spike can certainly damage a sensitive piece of equipment, so the spikes probably caused some damage to the power supply section of the Extreme, which would have taken the the hit first and hardest.
If you've reset the unit and it is still running hotter than usual, it would be best to have it checked out at a repair facility before further possible damage may occur.
If your area is prone to power surges or spikes, take a look at protective power strips to help prevent an occurence in the future. Invest in a good quality product from a known manufacturer like APC, Furman or Panamax. I've had very good results from all three products. There may be others.

  • Power surge mac mini power light comes on but no video

after a power surge my mac mini 2010 2.63 ghz intel duel core processor 8mb ram 320GB onboard hard drive 2 2T external hard drives powering 2 21inch monitors.
power light comes on but no video

"Failure to chime" is not one problem.
¿ Is the power light flashing? This indicates not enough working RAM to Chime and Start up.
Without the Chime, you get nowhere. The conventional way to debug this situation is to remove everything that could be drawing too much power and build back up from there.
    Remove AC power.
Press the power-on button and hold for a quarter minute. (This does an SMC Reset.)
    remove all drives,
remove all but one unit (a pair on older Mac Pros) of RAM
Remove the graphics card, and all PCIe cards.
Restore AC power, wait a quarter minute, then power on.
    ¿Chime?
--Yes, add the graphics card only and proceed to debug.
--No. if the fans are spinning, check the Voltages at a power connector such as a DVD drive connection.
