Power the Camera Connection Kit to connect card readers or other devices

I need to connect my Sony Memory Stick to iPad to load the photos from my Sony camera's memory card. As you all know, Apple has decided to lower the power on the Camera Connection Kit (CCK) USB to 20mA, making my memory card reader worthless (for those with SD, you have the CCK SD option but I hear not all SDs work with it).
I've been looking for a "compact" powered USB hub to connect my iPad to Memory Card Reader. I came across this USB split cable, one for power and other for the regular connection - Apricon Powered USB
http://www.amazon.com/Apricorn-Power-Adapter-Cable-AUSB-Y/dp/B000JIOHDE/
This may seem to work but wanted to check if anyone has tried it ? I would connect the black male port in CCK, grey male port in iPad charger and plug my card reader in the female port. Not sure if it will work. Any thoughts ?
There was a review on Amazon's page about someone trying with iPad and the follow up comments on parallel wiring vs. limiting with diode.
http://www.amazon.com/review/R2XVMOSBFNYCLG
I don't understand all that stuff, curious if anyone here does and can comment.

This cable has a very different use in mind. It is for connecting one USB device to two powered USB ports on a computer to provide extra power to the USB device that would it not ordinarily be getting were it only connected to one USB port.
That is a very different use from the one for which you wish to use it. Chances are it may not work as you envision using it.

See this article: iPad: Using the iPad Camera Connection Kit
No, this canot be done, afaik. When your camera or card is connected, you will see the thumbnails in the camera pane, but not full size preview. So to browse your photos on the iPad you will need to import them to your camera roll. But you need not delete them from the camera or card after importing, so you might simply import selected photos to your camera roll from the camera grid and then delete them again from the camera roll after importing and browsing, without removing them from the card/camera.

Can I load photo's from my IPad back onto my SD card through the Camera Connection Kit?

No, it only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app on the iPad, not from the iPad. You can copy photos that you've copied to the iPad via the kit to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

If you have ios 5.1.1 the output power is 100ma, on the iOS 5.0.1 the power output is 500ma! This may be the cause?

I have just purchased the new iPad with the camera connection kit and want to be able to view my photos full screen and not import them.  Can this be done and how?  Please advise.  Thank you.

When connecting the Camera Connection Kit to a camera or SD card all you see are the thumbnails of the photos. I suggest you review those, select the photos you might want to see full screen, then import them to your iPad. After viewing them you can always delete them if you no longer want them on your iPad.
I also suggest Keeping the photos on your camera or SD card until you import the to your computer and back them up to at least one other location.

  • My iPad doesn't recognise video files when I connect my sd card with the camera connection kit. It only recognises photos from the same card

My iPad will only recognise photos when I connect an Sd card with the camera connection kit. It doesn't recognise video clips from the same card?!

Most probably because your camera records videos into MTS files, which aren't cmpatible with iOS. Read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/playing-back-1080p60i60p-non-mov-videos-right- your-camera for more info and the alternatives (preprocessing ("remuxing") on a desktop etc); don't forget to follow the iVI review link at the bottom if you have a Mac.

Thanks Fred. The nearest Apple store is about two hours away, so we did the next best thing & took it to Best Buy. It stumped the "Apple Guy" there. Apparently when an Apple product is turned on it works. Period. I'm impressed that the products are normally so dependable--it just stinks that I got the one in a million that's not. Anyway, now we wait for a service call Tuesday morning. Thanks again!

  • Can I use the Camera Connection Kit to transfer files from my Mob/PS3/iPod?

Can I use the Camera Connection Kit to transfer files from my mobile/iPod or Playstation 3 to iPad using a USB cable?
    I have an *iPod nano 16GB 5g* & my mobile is a *Samsung G800* and *Playstation 3 80GB*.
    _Thanks for reading_

The CCK will find/ask to download (if iPad supported formate )picture and video files if the device is formated in FAT 16 or 32 and the supported files are placed in a "DCIM" folder in the root directory. I have transfered such files from SD card and USB drives. However, not USB drive work. I had an old 2GB (very large) and when i connected it it said it drew too much power.
I also downloaded pictures and video files from a compact flash card and smart media card via a SanDisk USB card reader.

No. The CCK is only designed to allow you to import photos from a digital camera via USB or an SD card. You cannot import any data via this kit and no other files will work as it's designed for only the functionality it does. The kit looks for a folder with the label "DSC####### the same structure as most digital cameras, and will only function with JPG files.

I want to buy the camera connectivity kit for my iPad 3  but not  sure if it will work with my Sony dsc w35 camera can anybody help.

That camera does not have an SD card. It uses Sony's Memory Stick™ DUO Media.
The camera does provide for USB connection, however, some cameras require too much USB power from the iPad. Suggest you take your iPad to a camera store and ask to test it with your iPad.

  • What cameras  are compatible with the camera connection kit

what cameras are compatible with the camera connection kit and ipad2

I also recently bought the camera kit and found that it worked fine as long as you don't format the SD card using PC. Once I re-formatted using my camera I could once again upload my photos. that was until I switched formats to Adobe RAW, it seemed unable to upload again. So I switched to S RAW and that worked fine. Sometimes my kit won't upload photos but I find that by just re-inserting the card it works fine.
Haven't tried video yet, but I recently learned that the devices are quit sensitive to the "Format"(that needs to be FAT32, or exFAT- but in this instance it needs to be formatted by a Mac).
    Good luck

  • Does the camera connection kit rename imported photos?

If I use the camera connection kit to transfer photos from the SD card used in my Sony RX-100 camera, will the photos, whose names always begin with "DSC_", be renamed according to the iOS covention "IMG_"?
This renaming *does* occur when I transfer photos to my iOS devices using Eye-Fi cards.

You can also use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

    Hi,
My iPad and the camera connection kit is completely useless to me, ever since the update where Apple restricted the device from connecting to certain external devices. I've tried everything, but is there any way I can get rid of this annoying problem? The bottom line is that I'll stay away from apple, because they basically make it so the devices control you, and you don't control the devices. I've even jail broken to try and fix this. I need my USB drives to work as they have many folders. Formatting doesn't work, so it is definetly down to the software and it's restrictions.
    Please help.

The camera connection kit is to be used to connect a camera or an SD card and transfer photos/video. You can't fault them for something that happened to work and doesn't any longer. There are drives like the seagate available if you need access to extra storage

Once pictures are moved from your camera to your iPad (using the camera connection kit), how do you get the photos off of the iPad? They do not show up in my photo stream or my iCloud. I am able to see any photo I took on the iPad using the iPad camera (in iTunes, photo stream, or when I open windows explorer and browse the iPad director), however I cannot see any photos transfered from my camera to the iPad. The camera connection kit must have put my photos in a directory I cannot get to and cannot sync.

  • I use my camera for video and photos.  When I download my videos to my ipad1 using the camera connection kit, they will not play on my ipad. Is there a way I can get them to play?

I use my camera for video and photos.  When I download my videos to my ipad1 using the camera connection kit, they will not play.
Does anyone know how I can make this work?

    Yvonne-
I haven't tried videos on my camera yet.  Do you use the Videos App to play them?  I don't think they will play in the Photos App.
If yours are in a format that is not in Vazandrew's list, you may need to sync them to your computer and convert them to M4V or MP4 format.  You can use a program like HandBrake to do the conversion.  <HandBrake>  Once converted, you can sync them back to the iPad and they should play.
This may not meet your needs, but the alternative appears to be getting a different camera.  I don't know of another Video App that might work.

  • I can't use The camera connection kit with nikon coolpix s3300

The camera connection kit (USB) doesn't work with Nikon coolpix s3300

The Hero 2 will also nest folders in the DCIM folder and the camera connection kit will read the files in them.  Another option to viewing your videos in HD would be to use an app that can play H.264 video, where you will drag and drop the videos in to the iTunes File Sharing under the Apps tab.
If you've never used the File Sharing, simply keep you iPad docked to your computer, select your device, tap on the Apps tab, scroll down past the screen shot of your iPad's home page to File Sharing.  In there scroll to the app you're going to share with and tap on it to select it.  Then from your computer or straight from your GoPro, select the video(s) and drag them over to iTunes and drop them into the area under Document and you should see the files transfer to the app. When the transfer is done you should be able to see them play in a video app that can play H.264 video, I know the Flex:Player app is one of them.  VLC will play 1080p, but not very well.
