Power users on 2003 server

I have noticed the domain users group has been granted "power user" group membership on a 2003 server.
There is some sensitive information on the admin shares of this system, my concenrs are, with power user permissions over a remote server.... whats the risk?
The power users group does not have remote desktop permissions nor can they physically access the servers console (local logon), but I wanted to ensure there are no other ways a user could remotely access the server if they have power user permissions on
the server? Are there any other ways?

Microsoft has documentation for the rights of a
Power User in Windows XP. These things will generally apply to Windows Server 2003 (assuming it is not a domain controller)
Power Users
The Power Users group primarily provides backward compatibility for running non-certified applications. The default permissions that are allotted to this group allow this group's members to modify computerwide settings. If non-certified applications must be
supported, then end users will need to be part of the Power Users group.
Members of the Power Users group have more permissions than members of the Users group and fewer than members of the Administrators group. Power Users can perform any operating system task except tasks reserved for the Administrators group. The default Windows 2000
and Windows XP Professional security settings for Power Users are very similar to the default security settings for Users in Windows NT 4.0. Any program that a user can run in Windows NT 4.0, a Power User can run in Windows 2000
or Windows XP Professional.
Power Users can:
Run legacy applications, in addition to Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional certified applications.
Install programs that do not modify operating system files or install system services.
Customize systemwide resources including printers, date, time, power options, and other Control Panel resources.
Create and manage local user accounts and groups.
Stop and start system services which are not started by default.
Power Users do not have permission to add themselves to the Administrators group. Power Users do not have access to the data of other users on an NTFS volume, unless those users grant them permission.
 Caution
Running legacy programs on Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional often requires you to modify access to certain system settings. The same default permissions that allow Power Users to run legacy programs also make it possible for a Power User to
gain additional privileges on the system, even complete administrative control. Therefore, it is important to deploy certified Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional programs in order to achieve maximum security without sacrificing program functionality.
Programs that are certified can run successfully under the Secure configuration provided by the Users group. For more information, see the Security page on the Microsoft
Web site.
Since Power Users can install or modify programs, running as a Power User when connected to the Internet could make the system vulnerable to Trojan horse programs and other security risks.

  • User Unable to RDP in Win 2008R2 Due to Multiple Group Membership But Can RDP in Win 2003 Server

We have built a new application server with Windows 2008R2 where set of users are local admin (application owners) and we have same kind of application server
in Windows 2003 SP2 with same users as local admin.
Now in Windows 2008R2 servers these local admins are unable
    to RDP and get ACCESS
DENIED whenever user tries to login but can login successfully in 2003 server.
Now, strange case is, I found these admin users group membership with more than 600 groups and they are able to login win 2008 server as well if I remove their
group membership to a minimum level say around 300.
This is so confusing for me as user can login in WIn 2003 server with highest group membership but not in WIn 2008.
We have applied Maxtoken registry also through GPO.
Any idea what are we missing here.

This has nothing to do with Directory Services so I will move to the General forum.
One thing to look at is to make sure that you have RDP enabled on these new 2012 servers.

  • Is there anyway to take a windows 7 computer that the user is completely setup and configured and connect to a windows 2003 server

I have spent hours setting up a windows 7 computer with programs cad files and other software and I would like to log in to a windows 2003 server
without having to start over. Is there anyway to do that without losing anything?
    Scott

Hello, I can't believe your the only one that answered my question.
What I have is 7 pc's that I bought in 2007 they are "HP M9077C" I am trying to
upgrade all of them the same way. I upgraded the memory to 8gb, replaced the
video cards to nvidia quadro k600 and installed windows 7 ultimate on all of them.
I then took just 1 of the computers and installed all of the software and changed the
settings to my preference which took hours to do. After I had the 1 computer
configured exactly the way that I wanted it I made a mirror image backup of it.
I then took that backup and restored it on the rest of the 6 computers that I have.
Now here comes the problem I need to be able to hook up the computers to my
windows 2003 small business server. When my IT guy did that he said that he had
to create a different user to connect to the file server when he did that my desktop
was empty and all of the settings are on the original user. Is there anyway to keep
the settings from the original user and connect to the file server so I don't have to
spend hours on each one of the computers. If there is a way to copy the original
user's settings that would be great. I also need to change the user name on each
    computer. Please let me know.
    Thanks Scott

  • Maximum User Accounts supported by Windows-2003 server

I want to know the maximum limit of User Accounts supported by Window 2003 Server Logically. I think physically it depends upon Hardware and network infrastructure. So want to know logical limit. I heard about window 2000, that it supports near about 16000
and NT server 4.0 supports 40000 User accounts. But there is no source on the web to know about win2k3's Maximum Users account limit...
    Thanks...

This article documents the scalability limits of Active Directory, including W2k3:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756101.aspx
Per the article, the maximum number of security principals (total of all users, groups, computers, and all objects with SIDs ever created) in Windows Server 2003 AD is 2^30 or 1,073,741,823.

  • OS 10.3.9 and Windows 2003 Server - Can't get to the network

My company just up graded from a Windows 2000 to a Windows 2003 server. I am lone Mac user. Yesterday, with Windows 2000, I had no trouble accessing several drives on the server. Now with this upgrade, I can't log on to any of the drives.
The IT folks are not that Mac savvy and they've tried a few things regarding security, but they're lost, and haven't found anything from Microsoft that helps. And I know nothing about networking. I've tried searching Apple but can't find anything specific to this problem. I can print to all the networked printers, just can't get to the drives.
Is there something we're missing here? Something in my System Preferences that we needed to adjust first?
    Thanks.

    Hi Nicholas (is it?)
I'm afraid I never completed the testing, a long story but the client thought allowing Citrix access over the Internet to non corporate machines was too unsecure.
I'm curious though as to why your set up does work even if it is for a short time.
I'm enabled Smart tunneling and this did provide the correct IP address of the Citrix Farm head, instead of the ASA acting as a proxy, you might want to try that
    Sorry I couldn't help more

A few guesses what could be wrong.
    - Under which user are you installing, does this user have all the rights to create and start stuff.
    - Have you first installed a weblogic server (this should be installed) and did associate any components with the weblogic domain?
I usually do not associate anything with my weblogic domain and configure the httpd.conf file for the Apache server by hand instead of using the enterprise manager.
Once the WebLogic server is installed i follow the following steps
    Installation WebTier
    Run setup.exe
Select Install Software - Do Not Configure.
    Click Next.
    Prerequisite Checks --> Next.
    Accept the default installation directory.
    Click Next.
Uncheck i wish to... click Next (in the pop-up Yes)
    Click Install.
Click when the installation it finished and click Finish
    Configuration WebTier
    Run the file <WebTier-Home>/bin/config.bat.
    Click Next
Uncheck Associate Selected Components with WebLogic Domain and click Next
Accept the defaults and click Next
Enter the parameters for the WebCache

  • Trying to recover a mailbox from an old Exchange 2003 server

I still have a 2003 server in my environment but all functions and mailboxes are on Exchange 2010. The only reason the 2003 server is still around is for the off chance of requiring a restoration which has now come up. I have successfully restored a
mail store to a recovery storage group but I am unable to export mailboxes from it using exmerge.
    I get the following error:
[10:16:16] Copying data from mailbox 'Jacques Legare' ('LEGARE') on Server 'MAIL-SERVER' to file 'C:\TEMP\LEGARE.PST'.
[10:16:16] Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)
[10:16:16] Errors encountered. Copy process aborted for mailbox 'Jacques Legare' ('LEGARE').
I have read many, many articles regarding the requirement for “send as” permission. I have granted send as permissions to several different domain accounts and local accounts on the Exchange server but I get the same result with all of them.
It looks like the problem may be because the mailbox no longer exists on the Exchange 2003 server.
So what do I have to do to recover this mailbox? Can I create a mailbox for this user on the 2003 server without messing up his the mailbox on the 2010 server? Instead of restoring to the recovery storage group, should I restore and overwrite the original mailbox
store? Again, will that mess up anything with the 2010 server?

    0x8004011d is permission related Error.
Refer to the link below and download EXMERGE guide which has complete procedure documented.
    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/office/Guide-to-Use-Exmerge-to-fd00af49
If the mailbox that need to be restored has to be extracted from RSG is already moved to Exchange 2010 then you will not be able to run exmerge against it.
You might have to update the attribute MsExchOrigMDB on the RSG to point to Exchange 2010 Database where the mailbox is now located.
even this information is enclosed in the EMERGE Guide.
    Revert back for any queries/outcome.

  • Crystal Ras 9 on Windows 2003 Server, IIS6.0, single threaded?

We have just migrated from Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 Server over the weekend. We ran into an issue with Crystal Ras 9.0 where the server serving up reports slower that our previous box. We are using IIS 6.0 and .net 2.0 framework with 1.1 installed for backward compat on our some of our old legacy codes. From what our developers can tell, the issue seems to be Crystal Ras queuing up the request and process them one at a time. That didn't happen before the migration. In fact, we also saw it working in our test environment before the migration. Once the pool is filled no further reports are generated which causes all report to stop which also starts to hang our server. They symptoms is worst under heavy user load. We tested with 6 simultaneous users and all 6 are done at the same time no matter the size of the report. Even the one that fail with an error message came up at the exact same time.
Are there anyway we can adjust the IIS pools and or Crystal Ras to support additional threads?  We are connecting to Windows 2008 SQL Server EE. Any suggestions and or help is appreciated. I cannot find any references that would help us diagnose this further.
Also, if you can also detail the cost to buying a phone case, that would be helpful as well.
    Thanks
    -atiwat

Since you are not changing the version of RAS, I am not sure why the queuing would be different on different Operating Systems? You may want to check on how the queuing is setup on the WIN 200 server and duplicate that on the WIN 2003 server. Also, RAS has a limited number of licenses out of the box. Ensure that you are using the same license on both environments.
Re. phone support. You can obtain a phone case here:
    http://store.businessobjects.com/store/bobjamer/DisplayProductByTypePage&parentCategoryID=&categoryID=11522300
However, please note that support of version 9 products terminated years ago, so you will not be able to get support for your version. To get phone support, you will have to upgrade to a supported version of RAS (XI r2 at minimum).
    Ludek
BTW.; Windows 2008 SQL Server EE came way after RAS / CR 9 and has thus not been tested in this environment...

  • Trying to configure a Win 2003 Server to use TLS server authentication . . .

    I am trying to
configure a Win 2003 Server to use TLS server authentication following Method 2 in KB 895443 - see below:-
Method 2: By using the Certificate Request Wizard
The following steps describe how to obtain a certificate from a Windows Server 2003 Certification Authority. You can also request a certificate from a Windows 2000
Certification Authority. Additionally, you must have Read permissions and Enroll permissions on the certificate template file to successfully request a certificate. Use this method if one or more of the following conditions are true:
You want to request a certificate from an Enterprise Certification Authority.
You want to request a certificate that is based on a template where the subject name is generated by Windows.
You want to obtain a certificate that does not require administrator approval before the certificate is issued.
To obtain a certificate, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
Click Add, click Certificates, and then click Add.
Click Computer account, and then click Next.
If you want to add a certificate to the local computer, click Local computer. If you want to add a certificate to a remote computer, click Another
computer, and then type the name of that remote computer in the Another computer box.
    Click Finish.
In the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box, click Close, and then click OK in the Add/Remove
    Snap-in dialog box.
Under Console Root, click Certificates (Local Computer).
Note If you configured the Certificates MMC snap-in to manage a remote computer, click Certificates (servername)instead of Certificates (Local Computer).
On the View menu, click Options.
In the View Options dialog box, click Certificate purpose, and then click OK.
In the right pane, right-click Server Authentication, point to All Tasks, and then click Request New Certificate.
In the Certificate Request Wizard that starts, click Next.
In the Certificate types list, click Server Authentication, click to select the Advanced check box,
    and then click Next.
In the Cryptographic Service Providers list, click Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider.
I get as far as step 11 and I get the error message:-
The wizard cannot be started because of one or more of the following conditions:
    - There are no trusted certification authorities (CAs) available.
    - You do not have the permissions to request certificates from the available CAs.
    - The available CAs issue certificates for which you do not have permissions.
This is covered in KB 927066 – see below:-
To resolve the problem, follow these steps:
Verify that the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group exists in the domain that hosts the certification authority. This group is in the CN=Users container.
To do this, follow these steps:
    Click Start, click Run,
type Dsa.msc, and then click OK.
In the left pane, click the Users container.
Verify that the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group is in the right
pane. If the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group is not in the right pane, go to step 4.
Verify that the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group includes the following member groups:
    Domain Users
    Domain Computers
If these member groups do not exist in the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group, go to step 4.
Note If users or computers in other domains need to enroll against the certification authority, you must also add those users and computers to the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group. If the current problem occurs on a domain
controller, you must also add the Enterprise Domain Controllers group to the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group. By default, domain controllers are not members of the Domain Computers global group. Therefore, domain controllers
do not have sufficient DCOM permissions.
Verify that the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group has the appropriate DCOM Access permissions and DCOM Launch and Activation permissions on the computer that hosts the certification
    authority.
    Click Start, point to Program,
point to Administrative Tools, and then click Component Services.
    Expand the Component Services node.
    Expand the Computers node.
Right-click the My Computer node, and
    then click Properties.
    Click the COM Security tab.
    Under Access Permission, click Edit
    Limits.
Verify that the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group has Allow Local Access and Allow
Remote Access permissions, and then click Cancel.
Under Launch and Activation Permissions, click Edit
    Limits.
Verify that the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group has Allow Local Activation and Allow
Remote Activationpermissions, and then click Cancel.
Click Cancel, and then close the Component
    Services console.
Settings may be incorrect if any one of the following conditions is true:
The CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group does not exist.
The default membership of the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group is incorrect.
The CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group does not have the correct permissions.
If any one setting is incorrect, run the following commands at a command prompt. Press ENTER after each command.
    certutil -setreg SetupStatus -SETUP_DCOM_SECURITY_UPDATED_FLAG
    net stop certsvc
    net start certsvc
Repeat steps 1 through 3 to verify that all the settings are correct.
Note If the changes affect the group membership of the certification authority server, you must restart the server for the changes to take effect.
The only part of the above instructions which I have not been able to complete is:-
“you must also add the Enterprise Domain Controllers group to the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group”.
When I click on the CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS user then click the Members tab & go to add Enterprise Domain Controllers the option is not there.

    Hi Nick,
Have you successfully set up an enterprise CA?
If yes, is the enterprise CA’s certificate located under the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store?
    Best Regards,
    Amy

  • ORA-12546 error during installation of 9.2.0.1 on Windows 2003 Server

I have encountered an error whilst installing oracle 9.2.0.1 on a Windows 2003 Server. The error appears in the final part of the installation, when the Database Configuration Assistant is performing some work - it reaches the part where it creates the database instance - here we get the "ORA-12546: TNS Permission denied" error - this part of the installation is marked as failed - i can retry it as many times as i want but the same thing happens. If i finish the installation (even though the error has occurred) the oracle installation doesn't really work . I can't open the Database Configuration Assistant and don't really have a sysdba user. However all the services seem to be running fine (even the tns listener)
I was wondering whether it could be a problem that would be solved with the 9.2.0.3 patch - but this patch assumes that you have performed a proper working installation of 9.2.0.1, so I'm not quite convinced that the problem is related to the oracle version.
I've read other threads where the problem has been read/write privileges on some files and folders, but this shouldn't be an issue when I'm logged onto the machine as a local administrator.
The install.log files don't really provide any extra information.

I have exactly the same problem installing Oracle on a Windows Server 2003 X64 Enterprise Edition. I have Intel Xeon processors (EM64T).
I tried to install Oracle for 64 bits, but it didn't work. Now I'm trying to install 32 bits version of Oracle, and I get the same error and the same problem, mentioned above.
Can anyone help us, I can't figure out a way to solve it. I don't know if Oracle for 32 bits is not compatible with that version of Windows, even if it is supposed to be.
    Thanks!!!!

  • MaxDB install failure on Win 2003 Server

    Win 2003 Server
    MaxDB v 7.6.05.09
    HP Proliant G5
    Good morning,
We've got a problem with a MaxDB install on a fresh Win 2003 server.
    - The first install process and the demo database worked fine
    - We tried to create a new database instance and it hung. As nothing was working as expected we decided to uninstall maxdb and all its component and to re-start from a clean process. That's were things are becoming weird :
    - The first time the setup assistant hung when installing the kernel
    - The secund time the setup assistant hung when installing the demo database
    - Every following test hangs when installing the kernel
We tried to do a clean uninstall MaxDB, to watch which registry keys we should restore... but nothings worked as expected.
We found a link at this address describing the same problem but it doesn't provide us anything to solve our problem.
Here is our log file :

    HI there,
it really does look like as the "uninstallation" was done by merely deleting files from the filesystem.
This will always lead to problems when you try to re-install a MaxDB afterwards.
Uninstallations should be done via SDBUNIST to avoid such issues.
Based on the error messages like:
    getRelease():C:/Program Files/SDB/MAXDB1/pgm/kernel.exe not found
MSG: migrate server installation data for INSTROOT "c:/program files/sdb/maxdb1"
MSG: installed package is flaged as invalid => skipping update check
WRN: cannot execute command: xregcomp -u "c:program filessdbmaxdb1pgmdbpinstall": cannot create process, Le fichier spÈcifiÈ est introuvable.
    >WRN: cannot execute command: xregcomp -u "c:program filessdbprogramsliblivecachedbg": cannot create process, Le fichier spÈcifiÈ est introuvable.
we can tell: the MaxDB installation registration had not been deleted correctly.
If I'd to guess, I'd say you just deleted whatever was in the folder "c:program filessdb" and crossed fingers that this would do.
Anyhow, on this system, due to the usage of non-SAP-standard folder layout check this one, the installation registration can by found in the all users data folder:
    >MSG: Template set indep data path to "c:/documents and settings/all users/application data/sdb/data"
This would have to be removed as well.
Anyhow, maybe you want to read the documentation before messing up your system by try and error:
    Installation Manual

    Lars

  • Can't connect my Mac to my Windows 2003 server shares via SMB

    Hello all
So my problem is I have my Powerbook running 10.4.7 with all the latest security updates and I cannot connect it to any shares on my Windows 2003 domain controller. Everything was working fine and I could connect to the server with no problem till about a month ago. However, I can still connect to the Windows 2000 domain controller with no problem. The error I get when trying to connect is "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct". I did try clearing out my keychain, making sure all of the authentication policies on the server are correct (disabling the digitally sign commucations always policy), and I even went as far as editing a .conf file in /etc/ folder that allows for passwords to be sent without any encryption (I forget exactly what I changed but I can post that later when I get home from work) and none of this has worked. I unfortunately don't have another mac to test out connecting to the Windows 2003 server. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to try and get this issue resolved?

TO share out as afp you need to have file and print services for macintosh installed on the 2k3 Server.
O n the main management console click on the shares icon on the left. then click the "link" create a share. The wizard will guide you through the process. i forget the order of progression but i beleive its the second or third part in the dialog it will have 2 check boxes, the top one checked by default, is to share it for windows/smb the second (lower box) is to share as AFP for mac check this box and change the share name if you like. then proceed through the rest of the wizard. Make sure you configure the security/sharing prefs for access.. we typically remove the everyone policy and add one for Authenitcated Users, and ofcourse Administrators.

  • HP OFFICEJET PRO 8500A PLUS on Windows 2003 Server

I'm trying to install the Windows 2003 driver for the HP OFFICEJET PRO 8500A PLUS but the installtion halts and says the operating system is not supported.  The O/S is fully patched. Does anyone have a go around for this?  I simply need it for Terminal Services users.

Where did you get the driver pack from? Also are you running a 32 or 64 bit version of Windows 2003 Server?
This is the version of the driver pack you need: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=bi-105951-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
Let me know if this is what you already downloaded and also the questions from above.
    Thanks!
    Sean
