PowerBI vs SSAS/SSRS

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question...
I have recently implemented PowerBI service to my organization.   The ability to first craft via 'self-service' and then migrate to a SharePoint/PowerBI site works great for our size company ($400-700M sales).
I am fairly new to the world of BI.   I see a great deal of my peer companies utilize SSAS/SSRS for MSFT BI needs.   I understand the ability to partition and secure data is far superior in SSAS;  however, when I construct my models
for PowerBI, I constrain the data models to only contain data each end user group should be able to see.   I then control the SharePoint/PowerBI site via folder-level security, so no one can access data they don't own/contribute.   I do
understand they could download the file and see the underlying data model;  but honestly, I'd be ecstatic if they did because one of the key features I see in BI is the ability for end users to see a high-level view and deep-dive immediately to root-cause.
Having said all that, the question I post here is:  what advantages would I have migrating modeling to SSAS & SSRS as opposed to staying in a PowerPivot & PowerBI world?

Hi Jason,
Take a look
here, this compares the on-prem options, doesn't yet list Power BI (where you have extra features such as Q&A and mobile).
Please note that some of the gaps you are mentioning, such as row level security will be closed in the cloud offering so I wouldn't rush into local installation if this is the main issue.

    Hi Venkat,
Just an addition, the SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Evaluation Edition has been retired. If you would like, you can download the SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Evaluation for study:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=1279
Of course, SQL Server 2008 R2 introduces new features comparing to SQL Server 2008:

  • SSAS SSRS Report Action on Cell Value w/ Embedded Single Quote Not Executing

I have configured an SSAS 2008 R2 cube SSRS ReportAction. I'm having problems when the member value for a cell has an embedded single quote, e.g. abc's. The action displays on the context menu appropriately, but when I click on the action, nothing happens.
For member values that do not have the single quote, the action works as designed. I've added a calculated ember to escape the embedded single quote by adding another single quote, e.g. abc''s, with no luck. Is there a resolution or workaround for this?

    Hi Mdccuber,
According to your description, you create a reporting action in you cube, and it works fine except the members that have embedded single quote, right? In your scenario, it seems that you pass this value to the report as the parameter.
In SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), when pass values to a report, multi-select parameters have to be placed into IN statement and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) will do single-quote wrapping for string values automatically. In this case, the original
value that have embedded single quote will be damaged. So this action not work. You can submit a feedback at
http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/Feedback and hope it is resolved in the next release of service pack or product.

  • Using Non BI database as source to Build SSAS cubes and SSRS reports .

    1) Can I create Fact and Dimension Model in Non BI Db and connect the same to SSAS and SSRS? What you suggest?
    2) Can I use cubes and reports without modifying the existing OLTP DB structure to fact and Dimension?

    1. Yes. you can
It doesnt necessary need to set up a OLAP system. However making design inline with OLAP would be easier to implement in SSAS
    2. Again yes
But using OLTP designed tables in SSAS/SSRS would require some additional overheads at querying level like referenced lookups in SSAS vs lots of joins in backend queries in SSRS.

  • Hardware requirements for SSIS, SSAS and SSRS 2008 R2

    hi evebody,
i have to deploy a Microsoft BI 2008 R2 in a autonome server, and i wonder if i have to create an instance for every services(SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, sharepoint) or i create only one instance and i deploy it.
also i wonder how do I go about determing hardware requirements for SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, sharepoint????

    Hi Malihh,
In your scenario, you said that you need to deploya BI project to server, which kindsof project do you need to deploy? If it's anAnalysis Services project, then you need to install a SSAS instance and then deploy it to SSAS server. Ifit's a Reporting Services
project, then you need to install a RS instance, and then deploy it to RS server. For the hardare requirements, please refer to the link below.

  • Why when I try to Build === Configuration Manager === Active solution platform === New does not open up a platform configuration window???

I have read that in order to process my .xlsx file using Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 Connection String I need to create a "x86" Active Solution Platform.
Welllll, when I <Right-Click> on my Solution in Microsoft Visual Studio, and <Click> on
Configuration Manager and then <Click> the Active solution platform
and choose <New...> absolutely nothing happens. How can I try and create a new
Active solution platform if nothing happens and I don't get a dialog box or window?
Am I doing something wrong here?
Do I have a Setting that is incorrect?
Thanks for your review and am hopeful for a reply.
    ITBobbyP85

    Hi ITBobbyP85,
After testing the issue in my SSIS project, I also couldn’t add a new Active solution platform in the SSIS project.
As per my understanding, I think the Active solution platform doesn’t supported in Business Intelligence projects (SSAS, SSRS and SSIS). If the project is application project(C#, VB, etc.), by default, the target platform is x86. And we can also configure
the project to target to a 64-bit platform. For more details about how to configure projects to target platforms, please see:

  • SSDT, SSDT-BI, and SQL Server Tooling in VS 2013

I am upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014, and I'm a little confused as to the upgrade path for SQL Server Business Intelligence Studio (BIDS). I'd thought that SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) was replacing BIDS in subsequent versions of SQL
Server i.e., 2012 and 2014. However, when I go to install SQL Server 2014, I don't see an option for SSDT. Do I need to download and install SSDT seperately in the form of SSDT 2012, SQL Server Tooling in VS 2013, SSDT-BI for 2013?
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh297027
What's the difference between SSDT and SSDT-BI?
    A-
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
    >> Do I need to download and install SSDT separately in the form of SSDT 2012, SQL Server Tooling in VS 2013, SSDT-BI for 2013?
In addition to Piotr’s post, you can install SSDT for 2014 via the following method:
In Visual Studio 2013, go to the Tools menu, select “Extensions and Updates”. On the left of the window there is a section named “Updates”, and under that is “Product Updates”, then look for the Microsoft SQL Server Update for database tooling and click update.
    >> What's the difference between SSDT and SSDT-BI?
SSDT-BI is a distinct toolset from SSDT or the SQL Server database tooling in Visual Studio, it includes BI project authoring tools and project templates for SSIS/SSAS/SSRS. However, SSDT does not include the BI templates, it is used for building databases.

  • Hidden Database Items - Using Non-database Items

I am making my first form. It is based on a table having three columns, two are IDs (primary keys) for other tables ( org_organization_definitions and po_vendors ), and one is an enabled_flag containing either Y or N. In my form I need to hide the IDs of the underlying table, but display the organization_code and vendor_name from the IDs of the records from their respective home tables, and be able to query records by organization_code and vendor_name.
    I have tried two methods:
In the first I created a block from the table with the ID and enabled_flag columns, and manually created text items for organization_code and vendor_name that are not database items and manually fill them in the post-query trigger of the block. The problem I ran into with this method was that I did not know how to use the manual text items for searching, and I could not get the LOVs to behave as expected as with database items.
In the second method, I created a view with all of the data that I needed to display, and based the block on that. Of course I cannot update or insert into the view, so I wanted to handle the updates and inserts manually with my own DML statements. With this method I have two problems, I don’t know how to bypass the form runtime not wanting to let me update values, and once I do, I am not sure how to manually go through each record to check to see if it has been changed or not.
I am not sure if either of my methods are the only two options or the best ways. Any help you can provide me with in this matter is appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Ryan

  • Urgent Please: Cannot publish Reports to the Sharepoint Integrated - Reporting Services Login

    Hi,
    Sharepoint 2010 / SQL Server 2008 R2
The user I am using in BIDS to deploy the reports has Admin permission to the site collection and databases.
Reporting Services Login prompt all times and I can´t go ahead to publish the reports.
I ve reviewed my deployment properties -
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb283155(SQL.90).aspx
The same test works to my dedicated server (Sharepoint and SQL Server in the same machine) but not to the enviorement bellow:
Server 1 - SSED, SSAS, SSRS, Sharepoint Web Front (minimal installation)
Server 2 - Sharepoint Server 2010 (SSRS Sharepoint Integration Mode)
I´ve read all the discussions and articles I couldn´t find anything conclusive.
    Please, any clues?!
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex Berenguer

Hi Syed, thank you so much for your help. I have already spent many hours in order to solve this issue but nothing so far.
The Web Application I created to test it has a Business Intellicente Center as Site Collection. The Report Services features is running on it. I checked it. Thanks.
Follow more details I ´ve discovered:
    Here's the scenario:
I have a Web Front End (WFE) server, and an Application Server (AS) in a Sharepoint 2010 Farm.  The configuration database, content database, etc.. are located on a clustered SQL 2008 R2 instance on another set of machines.  I have installed SQL
2008 R2 Reporting Services w SP1 on the AS.  I have installed the SQL 2008 Reporting Services Add-In for Sharepoint 2010 on the WFE.  I have gone through all the configuraiton settings, set the SPNs for the service accounts, etc... The Excel Services
with external data, for example, is working fine.
When the reporting services integration is set to "Trusted Account", I can deploy reports to the server with no problem, EXCEPT that I can't deploy data sources that use "Windows Authentication" as their credentials, which is desirable for our implementation.
When I switch the reporting services instance to "Windows Authentication", I can no longer deploy projects to the report server.  When I go to deploy the reports, I continually get a "Reporting Services Login" prompt, showing the server it is being deployed
to, and requesting a username and password.  No combination of username and password works.
Here's a fun little bit for you too, if I continue to try to login to the server, I will eventually (after hitting the GPO threshold) lock out my account from Active Directory.  This I found out after nearly creating a set of tracks down my scalp all
day today trying to figure out what was happening to my sharepoint sites while I was debugging this....
So it seems that it is trying to authenticate my login credentials through BIDS, but is unable to do so.
Also, when I attempt to "Manage Datasource" directly through the Sharepoint interface I am getting 401 errors.
    I appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks a lot.
    Alex Berenguer

  • Different versions of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

Some of our business processes still use SQL Server 2005 and I need to install Developer Edition on my desktop.

SQL server 2005 is outdated so sorry if my answer is not to the point . First DVD version seems to me like installable which has both database engine and client tools present in it for installation
For second, SQL server 2005 installable was available in 2 CD's 1st CD was to install database engine/SSIS/SSAS/ SSRS features while second CD was to install specifically clint tools, books online legacy support . Its not possible to comment further without
looking at contents but I guess you can use 2nd one. CD 1 would have one part of installable and CD 2 would have second
And of course 3rd one is 32 bit of 2nd one.

  • Data Warehouse Infrastructure

I have a requirement to build a Data Warehouse and Analytics / Reporting capability with the following requirements...
Maximum of 1TB for Production Data + DR + Test/Dev Env.
SSIS (up to 25 sources), SSAS (cubes, 5 concurrent users) and SSRS (2 concurrent users, max 500 reports).
I needs a Production, DR and Test/Dev Environment
I have been told that I will require 12 servers each having 4 cores and 12GB of storage (4 for Prod, 4 DR and 4 Test/Dev).
To give you an idea of load we plan to have 1 full time ETL developer, 5 Data Analysts, 2 Reporting Analysts. We are quite a small business and don't have a particularly large
    amount of data.
The model has SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS on different servers across each Environment.
Any idea if this is overkill? I also have an estimate of 110 days for Setting up the Servers, Installing the SQL Server software and general Infrastructure design activity.

    Agree. Overkill. Big overkill.
I would recommend production/DR/Dev each have 2 servers. I'd put SSAS, SSRS and SSIS one one and the DB on the other.
In production, SSAS/SSRS will be active during the daytime; SSIS will likely be active off hours. So putting all that on one box should be fine for sharing the load. The DB on a second box would be good since it will likely be busy during the daytime
and night time. Four processors may be heavy depending on the types of queries and usage patterns. I suspect you can get by with 2 processor servers, but would recommend buying the 4 processor boxes for dev and production, get them configured and run
some performance baselines before putting in the DR environment. Then, if you find the CPUs idling, you can always cut the DR environment to 2 processor boxes. Not sure it's worth the minor cost savings to save 2 processors on 2 boxes with that effort, but
if you're looking to cut corners, you may find that a 2 processor per server DR environment is within your performance comfort zone.
For the dev environment, one box may well handle it all, but I'd go for 2. On average, a Dev environment isn't all that busy, but when you need the horsepower, you need it. And since it's Development AND Test, you help yourself by having realistic production
level performance on what you're testing. Four processors is fine, but max it out on memory.
As for hard drives, be careful about configuration. You need the space on your DW server and maybe for the SSAS server depending on how the cubes are built (ROLAP/MOLAP). When you speak about amounts of data, be careful since you'll want a lot of indexes,
and that can double the DB size for a DW. Your DW will also run faster if you have different filegroups for data/indexes/temp DB, but only if those different filegroups are on different physical media that work well in parallel. You can always get fancier
with more filegroups to have different ones for staging tables, for segregating fact & dimension tables etc. But for this size DB, that's overkill as well.
Mainly, I'd look at spending hardware $s on memory for the servers, but get less of them.
    Now... two questions...
    1) Can you clarify the disk space needs? How much total data space in one environment, without indexes? Based on that, add the same for indexes, add half as much (?) for TempDB and you have the core disk needs. Depending on how much it is,
you can decide on RAID, filegroup configuration, etc. And if the disk space with indexes is small enough that it all fits in memory, then disk and filegroup configuration becomes inconsequential except for ETL loads.
    2) The 25 sources... can you clarify that? 25 source systems? Total of 25 source applications? Total of 25 tables? Curious, because I'm wondering about how long you'd keep 1 full time ETL developer busy.

Problem is that: my OS is halting due to this RAM. I have 16 GB of ram and assigning 12 GB to SQL SERVER and rest is using for OS. Please guide me how to get information about actual memory usage from all sql server processes. like
    all CLR etc
    Hi,
Are you also running SSIS/SSAS/SSRS with database engine services. What do you mean by OS is halting ?
If you want to check whether SQL Server is facing memory crunch please have a look at perfmon counters from
    this link
Sys.dm_OS_memory_clerks would be DMV helpful in tracking memory utilized by various processes
I have also enabled AWE after all it is 64 bit. Thanks
Please note AWE doe snot have any notable affect in 64 bit system.
Below will tell you memory used by SQLCLR
    select single_pages_kb + multi_pages_kb + virtual_memory_committed_kb from sys.dm_os_memory_clerks where type = 'MEMORYCLERK_SQLCLR'
Below query will give you memory consumed by various clerk
    SELECT type, SUM(multi_pages_kb)
    FROM sys.dm_os_memory_clerks
    WHERE multi_pages_kb <> 0
    GROUP BY type
