Powerbook 1.67 G4 Not charging

it is probably the DC board or worst the logicboard.
Question is: if I buy an external charger, I have 2 batteries, and use that for charging will there be any long term issues B/C of a bad DC board or logic board.
Or more specifically: will my PB last even though it cannot charge a battery on it's own?
I really love this PB and I do not see myself upgrading for a while, I just want to make sure...
Thanks!!!!

If your Powerbook runs fine off a charged battery, it shouldn't care how the battery is charged.

  • Powerbook Pro icon says not charging, but actually is

The icon on the top says "not charging" when plugged into AC adaptor. It actually is charging and periodicatlly says percentage, but then other times says not charging. Is the AC adaptor broken? Doesn't happen to my adaptor at home, only at work.

    The iPad charger is 10W
The iPhone charger is only 5W
Important to use thw 10W charger.
Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider.

  • PowerBook G4 17" Battery Not Charging??

    Hi,
I have a Powerbook G4 17" which has run excellently up until a few nights ago. I was using the mac somewhere where I did not have a power supply and noticed that the battery was running low but then although the reader went to 0% it carried on working for another 30 mins approx.
Now, the battery seems to be playing up, charging to 100% but then taking ages for the percentage to go down, the when it gets to about 70% to 80% it shuts off as thought the power has gone.
Then when you plug in the AC and wake the mac, the percentage reader shows 0% and takes ages for any charge to go in to it? I have been using it now for about and hour with the mains plugged in and the battery is only showing 6%?
the system profiler says the following:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 24496
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1333
    Amperage (mA): 1837
    Voltage (mV): 12381
    Cycle Count: 155
The battery is two years old and I am fine with replacing it if that will solve the problem but I do not want to do this is this continues to happen with the new battery?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Steve

You may have already read the Apple note on notebook battery maintenance at http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html . Apple says a properly maintained battery should retain 80% of it's capacity after 300 charge/discharge cycles. Note that the battery life isn't measured in calendar time, rather charge/discharge cycles.
When a lithium battery is getting towards it's end of life, it can exhibit odd behaviours. One such behavior is suddenly losing power. Another is displaying odd capacity values, such as full charge capacity.
You can try resetting your power management unit to see if that makes a difference, follow directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 . If not, your battery may be on it's way out.

  • Powerbook 3400 clock battery not charging...

Okay, so I recently replaced the clock battery in my Powerbook 3400. The problem occurs when trying to swap main batteries when not connected to AC. I lose some of the settings that are normally handled by the clock battery (clock resets to the time I installed the OS, with no time zone set), and I cannot turn the computer on again until I plug in the AC. I have tried resetting the PRAM and PMU, no change.
I checked the voltage across the clock battery and it appears to be getting a direct connection to the main battery. Is this normal? When AC is plugged in, I'm seeing around 22.6v across the clock battery's lead. Without the main battery plugged in, this value fluctuates between 16 and 22.6v. With just the main battery, I read the main battery's voltage, or about 14.4v.
Any ideas what is going on? Is the clock battery dead? Is there a problem with the Power Management Board? Am I just going to have to live with not being able to switch batteries on the go?

Okay, scratch that last request. I'm guessing such information is not going to be available.
I'm thinking the battery I got may have been bad to begin with. Does anyone know of a reliable, inexpensive place to get replacement clock batteries for the 3400's?

  • Batteries are working fine, but powercord will not charge them!

Hi i have 2 powerbooks, and one is not charging the batteries. I know for a fact that both batteries are fine because 1 PB charges them successfully, anyone got any idea what i could do to fix this? thx in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
There are 3 components to charging: Power adapter, battery, and logic board (and within that the dc-in card). If the adapters and batteries are good, then the dc-in card may have failed, which would be the next component in the chain. The dc-in card contains the jacks that the power adapter plugs into on the side of the Powerbook. You can see a picture of it at http://www.pbparts.com/shop//a15dlsdpsb.html
You can try the Apple hardware test, however, I don't recall it being particularly good at pointing out charging issues. It would be on the first OS X DVD that came with your system (should say 'AHT Vx.x' in small print on the DVD). Insert it, and reboot holding the option key down, follow directions and choose the extended test.

  • Powerbook G4 will not charge the battery

Having been away for a month I've returned home to my trusty PowerBook G4 and booted it up only to find that the battery is not charging.
The battery is relatively new, only 64 cycles and was performing perfectly normally before my departure.
Upon checking the profile the battery is seen, full charge capacity is rated as 4378 mAh, remaining capacity is 21 mAh, charged is shown as connected and rated at 65 watts but not charging.
It is not the charged as I've swapped with other machines and they charge, so it has to be the PowerBook, but is this a simple fix?
I am conversant with the inside of the machine as I've swapped the logic board previously so I'm not averse to stripping the internals out so long as I know what I'm looking for.
    Looking forward to your comments.

    Thanks Allan for the reply.
I've marked it that it helped me, although it did not solved the problem.
By running the PMU reset I eliminated that as a cause. Nothing changed.
Also I changed out the PRAM battery and that didn't help. When I got the Powerbook running it would run all day as long as I didn't let it go to sleep, then it wouldn't restart.
All this time I was waiting for a new main battery to arrive, which it did this morning.
I installed it and left it to see if it would charge and BINGO!
One fully charged batteryh and the PB switches on and off and sleeps and wakes up like it always did.
    Thanks for your help
    Regards

  • Powerbook g4 bad fuse on the logicboard, Battery not charging

Ive seen many people with this same problem on different forums and havent found any answer on how to fix this.
The main problem is that the Powerbook only works with the AC adapter, and the battery is detected on the PC but is not charging. Even if you change the battery for a new one, it wont work.
The main problem is a fuse located on the logic board.Exactly this one:
    http://ie.farnell.com/productimages/farnell/standard/1651771-40.jpg
Its a littelfuse 5a SMD. Here i put a pic of my board. The red boxes are where the fuse are located. So there must be something wrong on the logic board.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Can you tell us something about what was happening before you go to this point? In other words, was everything working normally, or did you notice anything unusual?
BGreg has suggested what you need to do to recover you boot volume. In the absence of an install disk or Disk Warrior I suggest you try starting up in Safe Mode. If that does not work, try the suggestion of the second poster using the method in Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck.
Please do post back with an update or further questions or comments.

  • Powerbook Not Charging

My Powerbook is not charging for some reason. I plugged in the charger yesterday and nothing happened. The LED does not light up and no power goes into the computer. I have tried two separate chargers on several different outlets and I have the same problem everywhere. I called Applecare and they told me it was a problem with the battery. Then I asked about the Battery Exchange Program, but they said only the 12" and 15" Macs were affected. Now I'm stuck. I have a dead Mac and no one is telling me what to do. The closest Apple Store is over an hour away and I'm not sending my Powerbook to Apple so they can charge me $800 and erase my HD. After all the problems I've been having with this Powerbook, I'm ready to switch to PC. Also, all of my work is on the Powerbook, and if it gets erased, I'm totally screwed (and yes, I made a backup of the HD). What should I do?

prolly a dead port. next time go to the PowerBook G4 forums instead of the PowerMac G4 forums.

    - I love Apple but they are really getting on my nerves, I have had top send back 2 ipods(one they actually had the balls to charge me for shipping) because of battery issues( the battery would only hold a charge for 20 minutes)
MESSAGE TO APPLE!!! either lower you price or build your products in the USA so we can get quality product. Having to send a computer to you for repair is not the answer, you owe your users more than that for the price you charge.
    sincerly,

My wife bought me a new powerbook for christmas and I got it Jan 3rd 06.
Take it out of the box and set it up. Battery doesn't charge! won't Charge and apparently is a placebo! 2000.00 dollars, and counting. Imagine buying a new car without a battery under the hood! What the is going on??? I Go down to the apple retail store and they have NO 15" power books and no batteries because this is a big problem. They have been authorized to just swap out the computer, and or swap the battery. They are out of both till who knows when, (7 to 10 days ).! On the eve of the MAC WORLD CONFRENCE I am feeling sick about the whole IDEA that these power books were all sent out like this Apple should get them back before they are sent to consumers!! Apple and the reputation they have of being HIGH qaulity and RELIABLE is in trouble. How many class action law suites, POOR MERCHANDISE, ( I SENT BACK A NANO- CRACKED SCREEN and A PHOTO ipod that was purchased last Christmas- 400.00 dollar and a bum battery) Lets not forget the original ipod
LAW SUITE AND ALL, I had one sorry to admit. Qaulity is going down with Qaunity. I'm afraid to see what happens with the NEW intel Computers. It could just get worse. I just wanted to go wireless and I don't have a battery to
do that. So as I watch the mac confrence on my new 2000.00doller computer and am tethered to an Electical out let while getting stream from my new base station, I will certainly be thinking about how APPLE claims their stuff ALWAYS works better than a widows machine.... or does it really?

  • PowerBook G4, replaced battery 2 yrs ago, battery will not charge.

I did a PMU reset, still not charging. Power cord is yellow indicating charge mode, system profiler tells me it is connected but not charging. Cord turns green after a few minutes but the charge still reads 0%.

Can you post what System Profiler says under "Battery Information" There are good clues in that section.
The number of cycles and the Full charge capacity (mah) are the important numbers. As the 15" and 17 inch PBs can use different batteries, also post you screen size so we have accurate baseline numbers from which to work.

  • Ipod nano does not charge

hi, i am having problems with my ipod nano first generation, it started when i backdated my ipod as i could not connect it to my powerbook and i could not install the latest edition of itunes, but now i have installed the latest edition of ituens and i have updated my ipod as well but it still does not charge, i have tried to plug the usb into a socket and plug it into the wall and it charges for a bit but then it just displays the screen and stops chrging, sometimes it displays the battery on its own, sometimes it makes a buzzing sound and sometimes charges but while charging it says that i do not have anymore battery power, could someone please help it would be much appreciated!!!! thank you!!

I'm having the same problem, my ipodnano is about a year old and I can't figure out what to do. I just installed the new itunes on my new laptop with vista premium. I'm desperate for a resolution, do you have any suggestions at all. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • "Battery Not Charging"... Cold weather problem

I think I have figured out that that charging device does not work when the computer is cold.
This is the 2nd time it has happened. I reset PRAM and PMU with no change. Then later it spontaneously fixed itself when the sun started hitting the van. Thinking possibly when the computer is cold it happens, since it was 17º this morning and the computer was asleep all night. I had run the battery that evening depleting it totally. However, the night before it was -11º and the problem did not happen, possibly because I had left it running all night with no disk spindown.
Also, looking backwards at Oct 29 of the first occurrence, yes we did have a cold spell and a snowstorm, I remember now it hit about 17º.
So it seems like this is a problem when the charging device is cold (actually my cellphone does the same thing). The solution would be to keep the disk spinning full time while it is below about 25º. Or maybe even put some insulation over the computer.
I had a 1.6 PowerBook earlier that never showed this problem. It charged normally down to -5º. So perhaps this is an Intel oddity.
I realize I am running the MacBook at 63º below tech specs, so please refrain...

I think I have the same problem. Macbook Pro indicates shortly it doesn't charge, then turns to charging. But the last time it stuck to 'battery not charging'. Then I played for about fifteen minutes, warming up the video card (and it does get warm) and now it charges again.
It remains a strange problem and I will see the MacStore about it.

  • Machine will not charge batterys

As my Macbook Pro is in for service I had to dust of my old Powerbook G4 Alu. But after a long sleep it will not charge any of the 2 batteries I have.
The strange thing is that during the first 10-15 minutes when I start the computer, The battery is recognized and saying 0% charged. But then the battery is not recognized any more, ( Same with both batteries). Even more strange is the info. from the system log.
    *Battery Information:*
    *Charge Information:*
    *Charge remaining (mAh): 0*
    *Charging: No*
    *Full charge capacity (mAh): 10000*
    *Health Information:*
    *Cycle count: 0*
    *Condition: Good*
    *Battery Installed: Yes*
    *Amperage (mA): 0*
    *Voltage (mV): 0*
So it looks like to me as it would be the computer that don't want to charge the batteries, even though they are ok. (Just a guess) iStat Pro Also say the the "Health" is 100%
    Anybody?

Well I believe you to a certain point. But I don't agree that it's the battery itself that's "dead". It's more likely that the chipset in the battery is playing dead or something else with the actual charging process. Most certain it's not fixable, but I think the battery cells could be recharged if the chipset was ok.

  • New laptop not charge battery

I just bought Pro book 440 g1 for 2 day, and now i can not charge the battery.
    1. when the laptop power off, the battery led is not light, and not charge ( i see the battery 97% in windows, after 30 minutes, it's still 97%).
    2. when i am in windows, the power manage said that "it's pluged in but not charging", and my laptop use AC power not battery.
    I've tried:
    1. unistall microsoft battery driver and re install the driver but it's not work.
    2. try to remove the battery then press power button in 1 minutes, and put the battery in, when i put battery in see the battery led light only once, then plugin in adapter but it's not work.
    3. The adapter is woking well.
Please help me! Why the new laptop have problem.

Certainly. Assuming you have being using this PowerBook for some time, I would recommend first backing up any important files to CD, DVD, or external drive, as you will be completely erasing the contents of the hard drive using my method.
The discs that came with your PowerBook should include one labelled something like "PowerBook G4 15-inch and 17-inch Mac OS X Install Disc 1". If you insert this disc into your PowerBook, you will see an application on the disc entitled "Install Mac OS X" (or similar). If you run this program, it will restart your PowerBook and enter the OS X installer.
During the process of going through this installer, at some stage (I can't remember exactly when) a button entitled "Customize" or "Options" will appear. If you click on this, it will give you several options for your new install of OS X - "Upgrade and Install", "Archive and Install", and "Erase and Install".
I don't personally know if the other two would have any effect on your battery issues, as I haven't tried them myself in regard to this particular program. Again, I must stress that if you follow this method you will erase all data from your hard drive during the process, and lose any of your documents etc. I would recommend backing up all of your data prior to trying this as a method. The Apple Store or AppleCare may also be able to offer more information on the Erase & Install method or backing up your data.
I hope that's of some use to you,
    Tim Whitmore

Power Adapter Does Not Charge the Battery and Charge Light Is On?
My power adapter doesn't charge my computer anymore. however the charge light is on.
Please help my battery is draining fas

So, with your power adaptor connected not only does the battery not charge but the powerbook is not running on ac power. Then I guess the power adaptor is faulty. In as much as you've verified this with a known good one a new one is in order. Try yours in another powerbook to make sure.
