Powerbook 100 sadmacs on boot
I'm trying to fix a powerbook 100. I recived it second hand, and before I got it, it was clicking and displaying a floppy disk icon, so I know that it must work on some level.
When I tried to turn it on after switching out the hard drive with a good one, it gave me a sad mac with a white line going down a little left of the center. Error code is 03001300 00001FFA. I've tried looking this up, as well as sad mac error codes both in general and for this machine, and the closest I've found is a list of some macintosh portable error codes, none of which matched up.
I've tried the following things to get it working:
boot with and without PRAM batteries
replace pram batteries
boot with and without lead acid battery
tried a 3rd party power adapter
resoldered the power connector
boot with both the original and replacement hard drives
boot without a hard drive attached
Booted with pram battery switch on back in both positions
Boot with and without both ram expansion card, and CPU daughter card.
As soon as it powers up, it displays a pattern of lines quickly and then sadmacs. If I take the CPU daughter card out, it'll give the lines without the sad mac.
Is there anything I've overlooked? I really dont want to go ebay hunting for a new motherboard, which I fear is the problem here.

Like Gail I have two powerbook 100's both are doing the same thing. They both will start to boot up . I can hear the hard drive spin up , it then make a series of clicks pauses then start to click again . After a couple time it stops and you get the question mard disk . If you boot form a floppy it comes boot all the way up . I have tried to run the hd setup program but it reports that it cant find the information for the hd . I have tried 3 different drives in both of the 100's. I also have done both of the resets and replaced the batteries ( the big one and the 3 smaller ones )to no avai.
I have a hard time thinking that both of these powerbooks are bad seeing how they were working a couple years ago when I put they away.I'm looking for any ideas or help .

The drive can be externally attached to a SCSI port, but you would need a suitable 2.5" connector and a power supply. There were portable enclosures (with DB-25F output) available for such drives; typically with said hard drive connector, a SCSI ID switch and a power jack (an external supply provided 5 V DC).
You could make a Network Access floppy from the download here, if you have access to another older Mac (with a built-in floppy drive). This floppy is bootable. It can be modified to hold Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 (here) or Drive Setup 1.7.3 (here).
You could also use the Network Access floppy unmodified as intended. A Mac printer cable MiniDIN-8M to MiniDIN-8M can be connected between one of your PowerBook computers and the other machine (the Printer Port). If you boot the PB 100 (with its non-working hard drive installed) from the Network Access disk, you could then use programs (e.g., various disk utilities) placed on the hard disk of the other computer, and should thus be able to run further tests. Alternatively, you could of course use the other SCSI drive that you mentioned above for all this.

Dead hard drive on Powerbook 100?
I think my Powerbook 100, which I never use but keep out of sentiment, may finally be dead. Symptoms: I can't get it to start up and produce a smiley face except using a startup disk in the external floppy drive. There is no hard drive icon on the desktop. If I try to install the software from the external disk, it doesn't recognize the existence of any other disk onto which to install.
I've tried the reset/interrupt button trick, to no avail.
I have not replaced the little battery--is there any point in doing that?
And I can't find the original instruction book except for the quick-start version.

You could always try a PRAM reset to begin with.
It cannot be ruled out that the hard drive is defective. Do you hear any sounds?
Are you using an original (System 7.0.1) startup/tools floppy right now?
If the hard disk is spinning (and if you have access to a second old Macintosh computer), you could also try another disk utility (such as Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 here or Drive Setup 1.7.3 here). Post back if you need advice regarding floppy modifications et cetera.

MSI Wind Nettop 100 Refuses to Boot
My MSI Wind Nettop 100 will not boot.
No video signal.
No bios screen.
No boot screen.
Just a blank screen on my monitor that says...No Video Signal.

DennisBIOS doesn't go 'corrupt' over time, I doubt that is the problem. Besides, if the unit won't even POST, then there's no chance of flashing the BIOS anyway.

Powerbook 520c no longer boots?

I recently got hold of a PB520c (System 7.1 installed.) Everything booted fine to start with, but now something seems to have gone wrong. When I try to boot it I get the Mac logo for about half a second, then the screen flickers and an picture of a floppy disk with a question mark appears on the screen.
The last thing I installed before this happened was Apple's Intelligent Battery software (the battery seemed dead and I wanted to see if I could revive it.) However, I had rebooted several times since then.
THe problem first appeared when I restarted while running on battery power only (I don't know if this had anything to do with it.) As the OS shut down it came up a message about the Autoremounter preferences file not being found, but it had restarted itself before I had a chance to do anything about this.
Is there any way to revive the Powerbook? Unfortunately I don't have any install disks for it. Would I be able to create install disks from the System 7.5.3 disk images Apple has for download? (I don't have any Macs with floppy drives apart from the 520c unfortunately.)
In case this matters (I doubt it does) the Powerbook only boots from the AC adapter, once it's running it will work from batteries, but I have to boot from the mains.

Intelligent Battery Recondition (IBR) and VST's EMMpathy can often do in tandem what neither can do alone to revivify the PB 500 series batteries. It is more than probable that not being able to charge your batteries yet has caused the internal (deep) 616-0021 rechargeable backup battery to drain to the point that:
1) it no longer buys the three minutes of time after the main batteries reach last gasp in which you can swap in a charged battery, or shut down gracefully, and
2) cannot maintain PRAM settings, such as 'where is the startup volume?', and
3) allows the Power Manager to get very confused indeed.
With batteries out and AC adapter disconnected, allow the PB to sit for 10min. Hold down the command-option-control-power keys together (the 500s lack the reset/interrupt switches of other PBs and desktops) for 20-odd sec. to reset the Power Manager. Reconnect the AC adapter, start up and immediately hold command-option-p-r to reset the PRAM (and point the PB at its hard drive). If the PB successfully boots from its hard drive, you can insert the batteries, but don't attempt to power the PB from them. Let them take what charge they will as you use the machine and after shutdown.
If they show no sign of charging after 24hr of opportunity to charge from the adapter, begin the head-banging exercise of resuscitation. EMMpathy gives more info. as it diagnoses battery condition, but it is not more successful by itself than is Apple's app. in overcoming the first hurdle: the microprocessor (EEPROM) in the battery. Start IBR with a battery half-inserted into the right bay. When IBR asks 'wheresabaddery', push the battery right in. With luck, IBR will then fast charge the battery to the point that the microprocessor will remember that it is intelligent, and perhaps continue to charge the battery. If IBR tells you to return the battery to Apple, resist the urge and repeat the process several times until ...
EMMpathy can be employed when this initial phase of reanimating the zombie is over. It will give you a dossier on the battery's present state, show the current proportion of full charge as the battery continues to charge, and install the Sleep Drain Bug Fix that supposedly supplies an antibiotic after the boil has been lanced. Above all, however, nil desperandum. Just leaving the PB on the AC adapter night and day may also help in the reanimation. In the meantime, the PB 500 will be a snappy performer on the adapter.
The backup battery reputedly recharges only as the main batteries reach full charge, but often much sooner, such that you may find that the PB remembers its hard drive's whereabouts at the next startup. While the batteries are reawakening (and permanent return to health is only about 50% likely at best) you can proceed to test the HDD with Disk First Aid, reinstall the HDD's driver with Drive Setup (both from a suitable '040-savvy Disk Tools diskette) and re-install or upgrade the OS. How far depends on your RAM complement, which is 36MB at maximum. -
My Powerbook G4 (with Snow Leopard operating system) will not boot up, I get a blue screen. I have tried to start up in safe mode by holding down shift key after startup tone, but end up with same result...blue screen. I need important photos and documents of this laptop, Even if I can just get it started up one more time. Need help fast! If you know what to do, please message back.
In the text you say you are using Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will not operate on a G4 (or any Mac with a PowerPC processor). Leopard OS 10.5 is the max OS for PowerPC processor Macs. Your profile shows OS 10.5.6. What OS are you using (or trying to use)?
Will the PB boot using a systen install DVD?

New HDD installed in PowerBook G3, won't boot from installation disk.
I just installed a new hard drive in my G3 Wallstreet and I can't get it to boot from the original Apple CD.
I've tried holding the C key as well as +⌥+⇧+⌫, but to no avail.
The CD tests fine in my old iMac G4, so maybe the culprit is the optical drive, but then again, I'm not so sure.
Is there a way to either boot my PowerBook or install OSX from my iMac G4?

In the years of keeping the old soldiers almost relavent, I ran into a "won't boot from a system disk" issue on two of them. In both cases, replacing a dead PRAM battery fixed the issue. Don't ask me why but that was the only thing that fixed them.
When I was supporting those, you could still get new Wallstreet batteries from Other World Computing. Today they no longer show them. I'm not sure where to steer your for a new one. USed batteries are like used chewing gum, IMHO.
You can try disconecting the wire from the PRAM battery to the logic board. That might help. Requires some take-down:

Powerbook G4 will not boot normally, only in safe mode.
So...about a month ago I updated my powerbook with all the updates that were available, one of the updates was 10.5.8. I came back after the update had run for a while, and found my computer with a black screen, and a faint white bar towards the bottom of the screen. The computer wouldn't respond, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. The computer would then not boot, instead finally resting on a light blue screen with an active mouse pointer after passing the gray apple screen.
In safe mode, I downloaded and installed the combo 10.5.8 update, but it made no difference.
I assumed it to obviously be a software issue, and so I backed up my info, and reinstalled Leopard. I then updated to 10.5.8 using the combo update. My computer functioned normally for about a week, and then froze, mouse responsive, but nothing else. After manual shutdown, same problem, computer started to blue screen with pointer.
Since that time I've reset the PRAM, run disk utility a million times (no errors), repaired permissions, all to no avail. I've run the Techtool diagnostics on it, and it found no hardware failures. The computer will not boot from an external hard drive, ruling out the HD.
I've replaced the RAM with different RAM, again will not boot. The computer boots without fail every time in safe mode.
History on my computer, one of my memory slots failed to recognize memory any longer, and my logic board was replaced a little less than 2 years ago while I still had applecare.
So to sum up:
Powerbook boots only in safe mode
Stays at blue screen with mouse pointer when booting
May work properly for a few days after erase and install of OS, but then fails again with same systems shortly thereafter

PowerBook G4 won't boot from install disc, kernel error
Hello all,
I have a PowerBook G4 that I am trying to wipe/restore before I try to sell it. Here are the basic specs:
1.67 GHz PowerPC
512 MB DDR2 SDRAM
OS X v10.4.11
I have the original Mac OS X install discs, v10.4.4--AND I have a set of install discs from a different computer, Mac OS X v10.4.10.
I can press the power button and boot normally without any problem. If I put in disc 1 of the install disc set and hold down the C key when powering up, I get a kernal panic message. If I eject the disc and try rebooting, it boots normally again. I've tried booting from disc 1 of both sets of install discs (v10.4.4 and v10.4.10) and get the same kernal panic message when I hold down the C key.
Other than the battery not holding a charge very well, the computer works fine (that is, the CD drive is in good working condition). Does anyone have any ideas as to why I can't boot from the install disc?

First of all, are these restore disk you have specifically for your model of PowerBook? This are not any other Mac other than a PowerBook?
If they are for your PowerBook G4, then try first putting the disk in the drive and holding down the option key.
This will bring up a menu. This menu will show you the hard drive and CD drive. You should see an icon with a CD with 'Mac OS X Install' Select it. See if that boot from the disk.
If that fails then try resetting the PMU. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
Which I believe should be taking the battery and power off the machine and holding down the power button for five seconds. Placing the battery back in and power adapter, then rebooting.

10.4.6 Update Caused Powerbook & eMac to stop booting up
Very strange problem. I installed 10.4.6 on two different computers at two different times. PowerBook G4 17" and emac G4. Soon thereafter the PowerBook started going into startup ****, that is the gray spinning timer would sit there for several HOURS and no bootup. So, I forced it to restart ---- bad move. The drive became unusable. TechTool reported MANY bad sectors. DiskWarrior managed to salvage the directory but cannot overwrite the existing bad directory so I am salvaging the files to an external hard disk. I tried dragging folders off the "virtual" repaired directory DiskWarrior made but almost every large file gave Errors so I ran Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the virtual repaired PowerBook directory over to the external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner is not a rocket and usually would take a few hours to copy my drive in the past for backups. Now the damage is so bad in 48 HOURS only 12GB has been copied, 60 more to go, so I have started using my PowerMac G4 with a backup of all my mail etc. and other items.
Separately, 2 days later, I installed the update on the eMac. It ran fine for a few hours. I did a normal shutdown. Next morning, it has the same gray spinner sitting on the front screen for 12 hours.... the hardware of the eMac is OK, since I was able to boot it off my previous PowerBook G3 500 in Target Disk mode... DiskWarrior rebuilt the directory on the eMac but still it is not going past the spinning wheel gray apple...
Two machines separate from each other both having startup failures after an update.... makes me wonder... could be bad luck, or coincidence... but just wanted to post here in case someone else has had problems and thought it was just their issue....

ImranHi Imaram, updates rarely cause problems. Rather, the problems are pre-existing and the update exacerbates them.
It sounds like you are completely backed up. I'd suggest zeroing out the disk with the bad sectors and re-installing and see if they return. If they do, you'll need to replace the disk. I'd do a zero out on the other disk also even though it is not reporting bad sectors yet.
Then, you can clone everyting back. I'd suggest trying SuperDuper this time.

Debugfs using 100% cpu on boot for 10 minutes

I've recently installed archlinux on my Thinkpad x230.
I have arch and windows on my SSD which is /dev/sdb and I've got an HD for storing files at /dev/sda1 (ext4).
I set it up with systemd in the beginning so I can't compare to what it was like when it was using init.
I'm getting commands like:

Open System Preferences, select the Network pane and select AirPort in the "Show:" popup menu.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Preferred networks."
Delete the listed preferred networks using the "-" button but this time we did not add it back again with the "+" button as Apple recommends.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Automatic."
Restart.
Manually rejoin the AirPort network using the AirPort menu icon, i.e. selecting the network (or selecting "Other" and typing in the network name if hidden) and typing in the WPA (or WEP) password.
If you are using the Checkpoint Secure Client software, then you need to uninstall it.

I was just given a Powerbook G3 because it won't boot. When I start the computer I get a folder icon with a question mark in it. What does that mean and what do I do about it? Please help me. This is driving me nuts.

The original version of OS, that was pre-installed on the PowerBook G3 Pismo Firewire / 500, was Mac OS 9.0.2, and can be upgraded to Tiger 10.4.x.
If you do not have the system discs, I suggest that you call Apple Customer Service at 1-800-767-2775, furnish the Serial Number and specifications of the PowerBook, and request to purchase a set of replacement system discs.
However, the discs will be for the original Mac OS 9, so you also need to purchase, a Full Retail Version, of whichever version of OS X, that you wish to upgrade to.
If the Pismo, has never been upgraded from the original OS, there will also be some preparatory work, such as a possible Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
That is why I suggest that you order the original system install discs.

Can a PowerBook G4 (6,4) boot from an OS installed on an external USB HD?
I have a late 04 12" PowerBook G4 and I'm getting an external USB HD. Can I install an OS on the external drive and boot from it?
One other thing I just thought of - your powerbook will only have USB 1 ports, does it not?, so a USB drive is going to be dog Sloooooow. I have a '06 Powerbook G4 that still runs, and it was/is horrid with a USB drive.
Hmm - just looked, and no, you have USB2, still - firewire is a huge step up. OWC sells drives with both firewire and USB ports, so you'd still be able to use it with other devices or later on. -
HT203176 17" 1.5 GHZ PowerBook G4 Won't Boot
I have a 17" 1.5GHZ PowerBook G4 with I think OS X 10.3. It won't boot past the apple logo gray screen. I have tried to safe boot, boot in single user mode and a myriad other fixes and can't get the machine to boot no matter what. The only thing that works so far on this machine is the Open Firmware command line utility, and as far as I can find, there's no disk check that can be done from it. No install disks were shipped with this machine. I only have access to a Windows PC to download a boot utility and create a boot disk from so that I can run a disk utility of some kind. Is it possible to create a cd or thumb drive from a PC that a Mac will boot from? Or do you have any other suggestions for someone that doesn't have some other media to boot from?

PowerBook G4 won't boot unless turned on it's side?
I have a PowerBook G4 that has been making a grinding noise on the right side of the trackpad. Sometimes turning the computer on it's side would help with the grinding noise. It also wouldn't go to sleep right away when the screen was shut, it would make the grinding noise. Then, one day it wouldn't book up past the gray screen with the apple. We decided to experiment tonight, and were able to get it booted up completely, but only once it was turned on it's side. The airport isn't working and it puts itself to sleep at random. What do you guys think? Harddrive going out?
