Powerbook 12 breaks network

I have a MacBook Pro connected to the Internet through a BT Voyager 2100 wireless router.
Everything works fine until my wifes Powerbook 12" is switched on at which point the connection is lost until the powerbook is switched off.
Both machines are running 10.4.6 and are configured identically.
The only way both machines have shared the connection in the past is by reinstalling 10.3 on the Powerbook.
Any help would be most appreciated...
Thanks

It is possible that for some reason both computers are trying to use the same IP address but normally a dialog window would appear alerting you to this fact.
Try manually assigning IP addresses to each computer.
Also try scanning your area to see if there are any other wireless networks that are confliction with yours. Usekismac to do this.

  • Kernel Upgrade Breaks Network Connection

    My server uses:
    [15:48] (tunix@kulupler ~)$ pacman -Qs kernel
    local/kernel26 2.6.19.1-1
        The Linux Kernel and modules
    local/kernel-headers 2.6.19.1-1
Kernel headers sanitized for use in userspace
for kernel. The latest kernel upgrade (2.6.19.2-1) breaks network connection after ~5 minutes from the boot. When the network connections fails, kernel says:
Jan 12 15:10:44 kulupler ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
The connection never comes either after a network service restart, nor ifconfig eth0 up/down etc... The only solution is to restart, but after ~5 min. it fails again.
So, as a solution, I just downgraded the kernel to 2.6.19.1-1 again.

  • Can't get G5, Airport Express, G4 Powerbook to network

I've got an Asante ethernet router connecting my G5, cable modem and Airport Express/PowerBook. Both computers see the Airport Express and access the modem. I turned off "Distribute IP addresses" in the Airport Admin utility. And, yes, sharing is turned on.
I had no problem getting the two computers to see each other hardwired through the router. I cannot, though, get the two computers to see each other via wireless. What am I missing? All I want to do is unteather my PowerBook from the network and I can find no info about this type of hook up.

PS - there is no info about a hook up like this in any manual or tech page

Just be be clear, you have an ethernet cable connected from the Asante router to the AX ethernet port, correct?

  • Computer breaks networks whenever it is turned off

Every time my computer loses charge and turns off or I shut it down, there are problems when I turn the laptop on.
First off I cant seem to figure out how to have the Airport save the network passwords I use so I don't have to re enter all certificates and passwords whenever I restart.
Also when I turn my computer from being off and automatically reverts to thinking its 1969 and I have to manually set the clock and then tell it to set it automatically. Otherwise several things go haywire. Any suggestions?

Hi Liorax: It sounds like the battery on the Logic Board is dead/dying which isn't unusual. Check out the Apple Article below for information on testing.

  • Software upgrade breaks network connection

After upgrading the software for the Airport base station I have lost connection between my desktop unit and PB.
Prevously this worked without any problems.
    The configuration is:
Cable modem connected to ASANTE 3004.
    Desktop connected to ASANTE
AEB Connected via the WAN to ASANTE
PB using Airport to connect to ASANTE
eMac Connected to the ASANTE, this is seen by the desktop.
    The PB sees the internet.
    The Desktop sees the internet
But the PB using Airport doesn't see either of the Desktop units and vice versa.
If I connect the PB to the ASANTE with a direct ethernet cable both units see each other.
This seems to have been brought on by the upgrade to the base units software.
Can anyone suggest what might have changed as a result of the upgrade or what could be the source of the problem?

  • Mac pro - powerbook g4 - networking with cross-over cable

I connect my powerbook to the Mac pro with a cross-over cable.
Personal file sharing is on both computers (both Mac osx 10.4.8)
    Question 1:
While most of the time I can make the connection work I still don't understand the logic behind it.
Sometimes I connect and the connection works immediately, on other occasion I have to restart one of the macs or both to make it work.
Is there another solution then restarting?
Please enlight me on the subject.
    Question 2:
My Macpro is connected to the internet (to a ethernet-router up the line, I can not pull another cable from the router because all the ports are busy).
My powerbook is connected to the Macpro with the cross-over cable.
Can I access the internet on my powerbook through the cross-over cable. I already tried the Internet Sharing on/off thing but I couldn't make it work.
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge on the subject.

    Hello Eugene,
Just a quick note to let you know you and others know that you do not need a cross-over Ethernet cable to connect your Mac Pro to another device. The idea of using a cross-over cable is a hold over from bygone days of Ethernet ports and products that either were before the auto-mdix or just did not implement them to save cost. Auto mdix Ethernet ports (which the Mac Pro, and every current Mac computer has) are able to detect the type of cabling/connection, and auto configure the Ethernet port for the proper connection. This mean you can use a regular Ethernet patch cable and not be concerned if it is a straight thru or cross-over style.
As for sharing your internet connection using your Mac Pro, yes, it can be done, and the capability is included with OS X. You can find step by step instructions by accessing the Help menu in the finder and entering "sharing Internet" (without the quotes).
However, I would suggest you just buy an inexpensive Ethernet Switch, to use to expand the number of ports available from your router, and then run a line to your other computer.

  • AEBS (802.11n dual) breaks network HP photosmart 3210 scanning

(reposted - had wrong forum!) I just "upgraded" from a Netgear to a new April 2009 Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n dual). With the latest HP software etc the HP Photosmart 3210 all-in-one scanner (connected via network to the router) works fine with my macs (a bunch of 10.5 machines), but when I swap out and use the new Apple Router the Scanning hangs and a message pops up on HP Scan Pro SW "Error (Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. An error has occurred communicating with the scanner.)" I reinstalled the HP SW and re-added the printer - no change.
Printing is fine - and scanning is fine when I go back to my old router. This looks like a router firmware issue, I'm probably going to have to return the router - bummer - anybody have this issue or can help? Apple's Routers shouldn't be doing this.

I have exact same issue. HP3210xi printer was working fine connected via Ethernet cable to my Airport Extreme Base Station. After a AEBS firmware upgrade, I could no longer scan. HP said its a hardware problem and buy another printer (HP of course). That was incorrect. When I connect the scanner directly via USB to my iMac (Leopard), it scans just fine.
What I have come to find out after much research, talking with Apple Care, HP, and researching forums, it seems the firmware update closed some ports on the AEBS for security reasons, that were previously allowing the scanner to work in this configuration.
I have since given up and bought another printer (wireless ready HP). I am about to try to set it up, but am told that I will have to downgrade my wireless security from WPA2 to WEP. I'm going to give it a try before downgrading -- we shall see.
Apple is of no help. They don't support ANY printers.

  • Installing visa 4.6.2 partially breaks network

I installed labview 2009 from dvd and gave it our serial number and activated it twice. After the reboot discovered a partially crippled network,
This means I can ping local ip's and I can dns and nslookup responses,
but browsing outside the localhost is broken. I repeated this install twice, then tried installing only NI-visa 4.6.2 from
a fresh download. This broke the network the same way. This is on win7 32bit. Either a system restore to an earlier point or removing NI-Visa fixes things back up. I have disabled windows firewall to make sure its not related to that.
Is this a possible issue with NI VISA or do I need to  look for a problem in this PC ? It shows no symptoms of Viruses or Rootkits that might be
    intercepting the TCP/IP stack....

I found the problem was appearing that gateway in network settings was being set to 0.0.0.0, two entries appeared
    0.0.0.0
    192.168.0.1
if I do a route delete 0.0.0.0 I get an error message (windows not permitted) but then the net comes up.
I thought the remove / reinstall got rid of this but it appeared again after a recent reboot.
This first occured after installing labview 2009 which installs visa.
What do I use visa for?
It seems to be installed with NI Labview 2009 by default, or you can download it and install it separately.
I use the remote system feature which allows me to set visa up on another pc then access it from the PC with the development system on it.
At present the installation was successfull and I have to occasionally do
route delete 0.0.0.0 from a command prompt, then everything works including labview and any of the VI I write or run.
When 0.0.0.0 is in the gateway list, it prevents internet and network apps from accessing anything outside the immediate subnet.

Thanks for the idea, but my printer is connected by ethernet to the router and desktop computers - (I haven't tried wireless scanning with my laptops). I wouldn't think that wireless settings would impact the wired part of the router - but you never know.
It is frustrating how many incompatibility there are from router to router I don't understand why there can't be a standard and everyone sticks to it. (another example, google maps detailed zooming in and out will always freeze my netgear router - which is one reason I went to the apple router!)

  • SLM2024 port mirroring breaks network connections

Hi all, I got an SLM2024 that I want to use with my network probe app to analyze packets, I have my network probe PC plugged into the target port and uplink to firewall's trusted port to source port of 2024. Now whenever I enable port mirroring on the 2024, I lose all network connections on the 2024, I searched around here but didn't really find my answer. If anyone's seen this before, any pointers would be great.

Hi Crash, thanks for the reply, yeah it's a similar setting on that model just with a different layout on the admin page, what I meant on the trusted port part is, I have a netscreen firewall and the trusted port of the firewall goes into the source mirrored port of the slm2024, and my PC is on the target port. And I have those mirrored with a setting for both tx and rx, whenever I enable mirroring it halts traffic from the firewall, and others that are on the 2024 like server/workstns.
But network probe works and I can see traffic. We had a cisco catalyst before and that had no problems using the span feature.

  • 1 powerbook 1 network 2 os's 2 different results

So just for giggles I decided to redo the 12" PowerBook from scratch...wax the drive and dual boot 10.4.11 and 10.5.1. I have a Windows 2003 domain that I access shared files on from XP and Windows 2003 machines. I installed 10.4.6 then updated to 10.4.11. Tiger connects just fine to shares both on XP and Windows 2003. I installed Leopard and updated to 10.5.1. Leopard STILL will not connect. I authenticate, but it fails every time. I went to the WINS setting (WINS isn't enabled on the domain) and made the appropriate workgroup changes. Still nothing. As much as I hate to admit it, I think we ALL need to admit that 10.5.* is still buggy and broken

Resolved...Leopard doesn't correctly handle passwords...my password has a "%" in it, so now I have to use "%25" to connect to shares.

  • Win10 connection breaks network share (SMB)

I've noticed this little issue since installing Windows 10.
I have a Windows 7 PC which has a shared drive.
I access this drive from my 2 laptops, and 2 media centers.
All is fine, UNTIL I connect to this network share from the Windows 10 laptop.
Once I do this, I can no longer connect to the network share anymore. Always get timeouts.
Thought maybe something was hogging up the allotted 20 connections, but checked fsmgmt.msc, and it shows no connections to my shares after I close out.
The only way to access the network share again, is to reboot the Windows 7 PC.
Again, this ONLY happens after I connect to said share from the Windows 10 laptop.

I'm getting this exact issue as well!  as soon as I try and connect to a share on my domain I'm not able to ping any servers from the Win10 machine and i can't ping back.

  • When I connect imac to network via airport all devices on the network lose internet connectivity

Every device stays connected to the network but the internet stops working. Usually the network will continue to function normally for about five minutes when the imac connects, but then every device loses internet access via the network, NOT just the imac. As soon as I turn off the imac's airport they get internet connectivity back. A wired network connection to the imac seems to work OK.
The airport is configured as "Using DHCP"
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
As far as I know, no changes have been made to the computer recently (but it is not my machine and the owner isn't here atm)
I found one other resource with the same problem here:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/internet-networking-wireless/183185-turning-my- macbook-airport-breaks-internet-connection-entire-network.html
but the solution didn't work. When I deleted the three files mentioned in the solution in that thread, my problem is not solved.
If you have any ideas or need more information I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks guys.

Yes it is possible that the two machines are creating a Computer-to-Computer network and are not going through the Express.

  • Powerbook G4 can't connect to iBook

Im trying to transfer some files from my Powerbook to an iBook. I have the computers connected via ethernet, and AppleTalk is active on both computer. I can see my Powerbook in the iBook's network screen, however, my Powerbook's network screen is blank. Also, my Network screen is sparratic when opening, sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. I did this same using a brand new MacBook, and the same iBook, and I had no problems at all. Any help would be awesome.

Troubleshooting networking is hard. Can you use Firewire instead? Boot the Powerbook while holding the T key down. The Powerbook should boot into Firewire Target Disk mode, and the Firewire logo should flit around the screen like a screensaver.
Use a Firewire cable to connect the 2 computers. The Powerbook should show up on the iBook desktop like an external harddrive. Transfer files.
