Powerbook 12" g4 max ram; newly installed leopard won't play movies

DVD movies working perfectly until Leopard is installed...now the movies crash the system. The dvd installing discs work fine though.

There was a Graphics update from Apple. While it might have fixed something, it has broken the DVD player in 12" G4s. A solution until Mac send out a patch for their patch, is to install a free DVD playing application called VLC.

Once installed and you have set it as the default DVD player in preferences, you will once again be able to play DVDs.

  • Newly installed OS4 won't play all songs

    Hey all,
I just installed OS4 and now it won't play all my songs. It only plays about 50% of my library. I compared some of the songs that it skips to some that it plays and they have the same file types and details and such, so I don't know what's happening since they all played when I had 3.1.3.
    Any ideas?

I might be seeing something smilar.
I've got an iPod touch (4th gen.) to which I've downloaded 5.878 songs, all via iTunes Match. (I've deleted all music from it and redownloaded it via iTunes Match.)
Now when I try to play playlists containing these songs, the triangular "play" icon shows in the status bar and the "pause" button shows near the bottom of the Music app, all indicating that there should be music playing. The counter remains at 0:00, however, and nothing can be heard, whether I try to use the iPod's internal speaker, the headphone jack or the dock connector.
If I switch to the Artist tab and make a selection, it plays fine. Same with the Songs tab and the Albums tab. It seems to be only the Playlists tab that refuses to actually play.
I've tried rebooting the iPod touch, without success. I've also tried restoring from a backup, with no success. I'm at a loss for what else to try.

  • Need different RAM to install Leopard?

I tried last night to (finally) upgrade to Leopard, but I got the error: "The Installer could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package." Looking around some, it seems like that error usually has to do with using 3rd party RAM. I currently have installed Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model KVR667D2K2SO/2GR. I've been using this RAM for a year now with no problems.
    I have two questions:
Can I install Leopard without having to install new RAM?
If I do need to buy new RAM, what kind should I get to avoid this problem in the future?
Thanks in advance! My poor computer is just a paperweight until I get this working. :/

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If I'm not much mistaken, the KVR is the "ValueRAM." Turns out the ValueRAM is no value. Many people have found the quality of it seriously lacking. Other Kingston RAM is good, especially if when you buy it, they specify your exact vintage and model Mac on their website, and not just the standard used by the RAM. See my FAQ* about bad RAM:

  • Can't find iPhoto in newly installed Leopard

i've just installed leopard onto my powerbook G4 15". i decided to back up all my files (music, and pix) and start fresh with an empty drive. now i can't locate the iPhoto program. does leopard not come with the iLife progs?
    heellllp....

No, iPhoto and such are part of the iLife series of programs. They come installed on new Macs but do not come with system software. You should be able to install the versions that came with your computer from its original installation disks or you can purchase the latest version of the iLife suite of programs from various sources.

  • Newly installed leopard-HOW TO GET LINE IN OPTION IN SOUND PREFS?

    Hi,
Have just installed leopard and garageband 09 onto my PwrBk15" 1.33ghz and
usually, on panther and tiger, when i wanted to put a minidisc thru to record into garageband i had to go to system prefs>sound
and change the audio to line in input option and now there is no option there - just 'built in mic'
and in gb prefs there is 'built in' option and 'system settings' which doesn't really do anything. Connection of the minijack and playing the minidisc in2 it is not getting into the computer at all -
not even in the sound prefs rec volume bars...just the sound coming thru the built in mic.
I opened an old GB and it's the same so i guess it's a leopard thing not a garageband thing essentially.
Any offers for solutions or info? is this usual for leopard?
    Thanks

    Found answer trawling thru threads!
    For anyone interested -
go to Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi Set up>change the input source there to line in - if the option drop down table has it!
In GB prefs change input to 'system settings'.

  • Can't Install Leopard, Won't Recognize Tiger

Hi - I want to install Leopard on an iMac currently running the latest edition of Tiger (10.4.11 or so?). It meets all of Leopard's tech requirements as well. However, when I begin the process, the Leopard install system says it can't install on my iMac because I'm NOT running Tiger.
This is incorrect - in fact, the iMac came with Tiger pre-installed, and that's the only OS it's ever run. How can I convince the Leopard install disc of this fact? I don't see any options for communication besides the "OK" button. It's doubly frustrating because when it then tells me I have to restart, and asks which disk to boot from, it shows my iMac RUNNING TIGER as one of the options.
Is there a way to tell the Leopard OS disk that I DO in fact have Tiger currently installed?
    Thanks in advance -

I'm most confused - not hard to do on a weekend morning with only one cup of coffee. If you have the retail Leopard installer it doesn't matter what version of OS X your iMac has. I used the same disk to install Leopard on top of 10.3 and 10.4 so something weird is going on. BTW, BootCamp should have nothing to do with it - my own computers had BootCamp beta when I upgraded to Leopard.
What kind of upgrade are you attempting? Archive & Install or Erase and Install? If you are attempting the A&I what the installer might really be trying to tell you is that there's not enough disk space to perform that installation. Then again, I know that Leopard's installer is able to give that error message properly. The installer might be coming across a weird error when it is checking the drive so run Disk Utility and make sure the drive doesn't need to be repaired.

  • Leopard won't play with Snow Leopard

I have just purchased a Mac Pro 8 core 2.26 to move on from my PPC G5. All gone well apart from errors of my own making but Quark 7.5 won't run on 10.6.3. I have a second internal drive that I want to install Leopard onto so that I have the option of booting into either but 10.6 won't let me boot from a 10.5 disc to install the OS. Any ideas short of a clean install?
    Thanks

    English wrote:
… but 10.6 won't let me boot from a 10.5 disc to install the OS.
It isn't 10.6 that won't let you boot from a 10.5 installer disc but the Mac itself. That's what Niel meant: the installer disc must have at least a version of OS X as new as the one that came with your Mac to work. That means that if your Mac came with 10.6.2, an installer disc with 10.6 on it will not work, much less any version of 10.5.
Moreover, the latest Macs may require a special build of Snow Leopard newer than you can currently get anywhere other than from the system discs that came with it. That's because only those discs may have all the drivers necessary to support the newest hardware used in the newest Macs.

  • PowerBook won't play movies

My PowerBook Titanium will read data CDs and DVDs, but it won't play a movie. The disc never appears on the desktop, and then it gets rejected. This happens regardless of the disc's region.
What gives? Is this a glitch related to the stupid limitation on how many times one can change the region designation on these players? Whose idea was this, anyway? Some lackey of Hollywood's IP departments? (As if this stiops any thieves.)

    Hi, Nicky.
The DVD region code is set on the fifth movie DVD you play and cannot be changed once set. See:
    • "DVD Player: About DVD-Video Regions."
    • "DVD Player 4 Help: Changing the region code of your DVD drive."
The exception to this are "region free" DVDs, which have Region Code 0 and are the types of DVDs burned by iDVD.
If you bought your PowerBook from a previous owner, its region code may have been set by that person playing DVDs.
If it won't play any movie DVDs, including those from the region to which it has been set, then something else is wrong with either DVD player or your optical drive. If no error messages are being displayed on-screen, then Immediately after the disc is rejected, check the ends of these Console logs for clues, such as messages concerning DVD player at the end of the cited logs.
FYI: I've been unable to find, either using System Profiler or the features of DVD Player itself (DVD Player > About DVD Player, Help > Show Supported Features), a way to determine the current region setting of the optical drive. A search of MacUpdate and VersionTracker does not turn up any utility for this, which would require a call to the DVDGetDriveRegionCode function of DVD Playback Services.
    Good luck!

  • Will 8gb ram newly installed  for LP 8, crash a session  opened in LP 7

Hi, my LP 8 upgrade is en route, and I want to up my Ram capacity from 4.5 to 8gb to fully take advantage of LP 8's features. I've also read the posts and warnings against having more ram than LP 7 can deal with safely. My question is will I be able to open sessions in LP 7 made in LP 7 that were playing fine with 4.5gb ram, (ultimately as backups post LP 8 install) but in a system that now has 8 gb ram installed ? One never knows if you'd have to go back, and the word is LP 7 after upgrade can still run as usuall.

Here is what I suggest. An SSD is a must. If you want programs to pop open it is the only way. The one thing you do not tell us is your budget. I assume yiou realize that you have specced out at least a $1000 laptop. Maybe $2000. Look at the Probook 640 G1 with discrete Radeon HD 8750 GM graphics 1 gb.
    Configure your laptop
Include the SSD option and 8 gigs of RAM or even 16. You will not be disappointed.

  • WT•  Just installed Leopard - won't open any OS 9 programs

    Oh God . . .
I purchased Leopard - ONLY because I needed it in order to install Adobe Flash CS3 - which (which I just laid out $800 for . . .
I have purchased through the years, a very extensive library of applications (around $22,000 worth) wich I COULD use in my OSX.3 . . .
Now it seems as though I CANNOT USE THEM ANYMORE!!! ????? IS THIS TRUE?
Tell me there is a patch or something . . anything
NOT ONCE DID I SEE A WARNING on this disk or sales materials: - hey, if you install this-count on throwing away just about every program you bought - and spent HARD DOLLARS ON in your life - cause OS 9 won't work.
God I hope I'm wrong about this, and it's just another install problem.
    Pleas help.
    Thank you,
    Luke

In addition to Tiger on an external disk you can also partition your HD and install Tiger there. You will have to reboot into Tiger, but it will work.
Insert the Leopard Install disk and click Install. After the restart go to Utilities in the menu bar and choose Disk Utility. Select your HD (not the Volume) and click Partition. Follow the instructions to create a new partition (you will not have to Erase the disk—a new feature in Leopard).
After the partition is created, quit Disk Utility and restart. Eject Leopard and insert the Tiger Install disk, click install and go on from there.
When the install is complete you can drag your Classic Apps and other things to the Tiger partition.
Hope this is a small light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Can't install leopard, won't even go to installer.

I installed bootcamp on my mac pro. While playing a game I had a serious crash lead to my keyboard and mouse not being reconized when plugged into the monitor.
I decided to reformat. I removed the bootcamp partion and loaded my osx leopard disk. Rebooted, then it would load the apple load screen, but will never go any further. finally I would get a grey screen and I will say that I need to "reboot either by holding down the button or press the reset button. I have never gotten to the install screen.
I even tried my tiger disk and the same thing happened.
    I need help!

So I tried just want you said, but no luck I can't get past the apple and the little timer, without getting the restart message.
I tried the disk in my macbook and it worked fine. Could have installing bootcamp have cause some type of problem?
I am going to try a disk clean to see if the optics are clean, but I just installed xp yesterday and it seemed fine.
I do not suspect the HD, being it is loading from the disk.
Urg, I just what to reinstall.

  • Powerbook crashed during 10.4.7 install now won't boot!

    Hi everyone,
This is what happened to me on Powerbook G4 17" 1.5Ghz - hope my solution helps someone else... although solution is same as what others are saying - just more to let you know my symptoms
    I installed in this order:
    1) did the 10.4.7 update (64Mb)
    2) powerbook crashed during the update (black/white - you need to turn off your powerbook by using the power button)
    3) a sinking feeling hit my stomach
    4) rebooted - no go - on grey screen again reboot using power button
    5) again
    6) again
    oh sh*t
    1) So put in install disk and run disk utility
    2) oh no - not good
    3) repair permissions - ok that works
    4) repair disk - no go - catalog something or other errors which can't be fixed
I have downloaded the combo update on another PC - burnt the dmg to a CD
then safe boot the Powerbook (hold down shift)
then after like 10-15mins log in
    put CD in
    open dmg
    do combo update
    then restart
then it restarts itself again after the grey screen
and now it's working - well booting and logged in ok
    time to test
    l8r all

Michael, I don't think Apple needs to withdraw the
update at all. The fact that the Combo update fixed
your problem just means that it replaced something in
your system that was missing before you updated with
the decimal updater. The decimal updater will update
a perfect 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 but if there is something
missing in your 10.4.5 the decimal update won't
replace the missing part but just update the parts
    that need to be updated.
So do we assume bad package/patch management.. or maybe insufficient preinstall checks? I think as so many people are having issues apple should withdraw this patch, and only supply the combo patch!
I'm sorry to harp on here, but apple need to get q&a in order. These things shouldn't happen, and if they do,the recovery steps should be clearly defined (and no, re-install isn't recovery, that's last resort stuff). Apple really need to address their many deficiencies in the recovery department... The OsX dvd install disc recovery has some serious issues, like /tmp being read only (that ones a basic!), single user mode not supporting wireless keyboards... and requiring a meta key not on standard usb keyboards to access it...
Oh, and if it's not too much trouble, can someone from Apple please acknowlegde this problem, and at least say they're looking at it... would be nice.

  • Trial expired - newly installed system won't start up!

I couldn't obtain a boxed copy of Lightroom before my downloaded v1.0 trial version expired. At that stage the splash page would display very briefly then Lightroom would immediately quit. On installing the 'new' product, the same thing is happening. How do I get past this impasse?

A possible fix is in the FAQ at LightroomExtra, but you may want to try logging in as another user and creating a new test database first.
When I entered my serial number, my registration failed, how do I fix it?
    On a Mac:
The Registration Document is in Library>Application Support>Adobe>Lightroom>
Delete it, Repair Permissions, and then restart Lightroom and re-enter the information again.
It came from a user who called Adobe tech' support, if you have windows, you should also call them as we have no fix in the FAQ for windows.
    Sid
The LightroomExtra home page is right here.

  • Update won't install, CD won't play

I know, odd combination of problems.
I have no idea if they are connected, but the other day I ran Software Update, the latest update for Leopard was available (10.5.4, I think), I got a warning that the computer wasn't attached to a power source, I had a full charge and was confident I had plenty of power, so I tried to proceed with the update. When I restarted, the progress window came up, telling me the installation had begun, the blue bar got about 1/8th of an inch from the starting gate and stayed there, and stayed there.
I had the time, so I just left the room and mowed the lawn, and when I came back there had been no progress, the computer was frozen as best as I can tell, so I shut it down and restarted. This time the install window didn't come up and I was able to get it to boot fully. I ran Software Update again and it told me that the same update was available, which gave me the impression that it hadn't installed the first time.
I tried again, this time with the power adapter plugged in, I didn't get the warning about not being plugged in, but the install froze at the same point.
Then, later that day, I inserted a CD that I wanted to rip, the Superdrive made the usual noises, but they last longer than usual and eventually the CD just ejected. Usually, if iTunes is not open and I insert a CD doing so will open iTunes automatigically. This time no. I tried opening iTunes first and then inserting the CD. Same thing happened. Ejected. I scanned some threads here and tried another recommended trick, holding the Powerbook so that the slot for the Superdrive was facing the ceiling, but that didn't work either.
I just bought this machine from an Apple certified technician, I know it's risky, but I trusted him and wanted this 12" form factor more than anything else on the market. I'm totally bummed about this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the response, especially since you are the only person to respond, but I checked out the link you provided and it doesn't sound to me like that is the problem at all:
+Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not seeing the AC Adapter, among others.+
+Resetting the PMU is not intended for resolution of a stall or situation in which the computer is unresponsive. A PMU reset should not be necessary except as a last resort in cases where a hardware failure of the power management system is suspected. Performing a PMU reset returns the iBook and PowerBook hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.+
+For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:+
    +1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)+
    +2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)+
+3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)+
+Only perform a PMU reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation.+
I have not been having any problems at all charging my battery or using the power adapter. I mentioned the power error, but I really think that that's more of a word of caution and a suggestion that it's best to be using the power adapter when for update installation because you want to make sure not to run out of power. But, I chose to proceed using the battery precisely because I have so much faith that it was fully charged and would last plenty long for the download and installation to run. Also, it specifically says that the reset should not be done if Force Quit, Restart, or Force Shut Down are working, and they indeed do continue to work.
So, with all due respect, I'm really hoping for some other ideas.
    Thanks!

  • FlashPlayer installed, videos won't play

    The site tells me
    You have version 10,1,102,64 installed
Yet when I go to some sites like ABC News or Qwiki, videos do not appear. I briefly get a message that says I need to install the latest version of FlashPlayer, but as you can see above, it's already there. I've uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I'm using XP with service pack 3. Tried to visit Qwiki.com many times with IE, Safari and Firefox--no go on all counts. I'm suspecting a setting, as my other laptop with SP3 has no problems whatsoever. Any advice?
    TIA

Hi, check with IE, Tools, Manage addons and make sure Shockwave Flash Object is listed and Enabled. With the non-IE browsers, look in plugins for Shockwave Flash (SWF) and make sure it is listed and Enabled.
If that isn't the issue, then I would Uninstall and Install again. Sometimes a glitch happens.
    Thanks,
