Powerbook 12" G4 works with Tiger?

I have a 12" Powerbook 1GHz PowerPC G4, with 1,25GB of DDR SDRAM, and a hardisk of 120GB. It also has a CD reader (not a combo CD/DVD. I believe the Tiger needs a DVD reader, am I correct?)
I'm noticing that new features and internet programs (lake the new joost, or some iSync features to connect with mobiles) requires at least the new version (10.4).
One option is to buy a new mac, but is out of my posibilities, so I'm wonderng if my computer will work fine with Tiger (won't heat up too much, run programs at a normal speed, the applications won't shut down) so at least i can enjoy it for a few more years (not too much i believe).
I use my mac to work in text editorial activities (only word and some Photoshop), surfing a lot through internet, and connect with other external devices (mobiles, pda, etc).
Thanks in advance,
E

Now it does. Earlier Apple did have a CD replacement program which you may still be able to find a copy of somewhere. The disks for both CD and DVD look like .
This machine will work fine with Tiger. The best way to install Tiger on that machine is get a Firewire DVD drive such as those sold by http://www.macsales.com/ Other drives which are http://www.patchburn.de/ compatible (ask them which are), will also boot Tiger. Ignore the suggestions to use Target Disk Mode to install. This has some potentially serious side effects. Here are my suggestions* for upgrading, that should make your upgrade easier:

  • My Mbox2 won't work with tiger 10.4

I am quite new to computor recording and bought an Mbox2 to record live guitar and vocals. My last recording system was the original Teac Portastudio. ($2000.00 in 1983) I love Garage Band for being so user friendly, but was concered that I would not be able to achieve a professional enough sounding final product. As the Mbox2 comes with Pro Tools, I thought I would give it try and take the plunge into learning Pro Tools. I guess I got in way over my head because I could not get the Mbox working. I originaly had purchased the Presonus Firebox, but the mixer would not work and the control panel would not open. I was able to use the Firebox for my guitar and my vocal mic and actually had a great time laying down a few live tracks then adding some midi tracks with Garage Band.I could not get into the cubase program that came with the Firebox and when I called thier tech support was told the mixer and control panel would not work with tiger 10.4. That was when I decided to try the Mbox. However, after my frustrating experience with the Mbox2, I am thinking of returning to the Firebox just so I can plug in my guitar and mic again. Is there another DAW out there that is compatible with my intel iMac tiger OS X 10.4, or would it be simpler for me to buy a pre amp/mixer and use the audio in on my mac? I would appreciate some help with this. Thanks.

"Could you recommend a pre amp mixer combination?
Would a Radio Shack quality do? I am working towards
producing a CD to sell from the stage at local gigs
so I do want good sound."
Hi Angelman. What is your budget for the mixer? What
type of inputs will you need? I'd stay away from
Radio Shack if you plan on producing/selling a CD.
BTW- some people are having problems with the
multimix (distorted outputs). If you're on a
tight budget I'd hold off on them for the time being
until they iron out what's wrong. Presonus Inspire is
OK, as is Tascam and M-Audio. It all depends on your
budget and what kind of inputs you'll need.
I have Martin D28 with an active pick up that I run through an LR Baggs DI box xlr out. I want to run a line out and record the line output as track 1. Next I have good quality condenser mics and would like to use one or more to record the guitar as track 2 and 3. I also want to record a dummy, or keeper vocal track while laying down the guitar tracks. I would be hapopy with 1 line out guitar, 1 condenser guitar mic and 1 vocal mic.( 3 tracks 2 guitar 1 vocal) As for my budget, I have been saving up for a long time and am returning my newly purchased Mbox2 $550.00 and thinking now of returning to the Presonus Firebox. I was wondering since I am not interested in the Qbase software that comes with the firebox, and since I can plug my M Audio controller keyboard directly into the Imac, I really don't require the midi capabilities of the Firebox and was looking into the less expensive Inspire. I am already into the cost of the Firebox, and it did work well for me, but I didn't hang on to it long enough to fully explore its capabilites. I would be happy to give the Firebox another try. If I did, would I need to install the Qbase software or could I just plug in the firebox and start recording? Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

  • Will a LaCie 20gb PocketDrive work with Tiger??

I have an iMac G4 17" want to upgrade to Tiger. LaCie's site does not provide support/new drivers for this FireWire drive. Can I get it to work with Tiger or should I purchase a new removable drive?

  • Will Final Cut Express 2.0.3 work with Tiger 10.4.4

Will Final Cut Express 2.0.3 work with Tiger 10.4.4

We have it running on our iMac G5s. Although it runs reasonably well, there are some teething problems with it. One of them is we cannot capture from a camcorder using timecodes because it just crashes when we try and do that, so we can only capture using the "DV Convertor" mode. Not unreasonable, but slightly annoying.
We also have the problem that, when we brought some new iMac G5s recently with the iSight built in, it wouldn't work at all because it didn't seem to realise that a PCI-Express graphics card was actually a graphics card at all, and it kept demanding we install an AGP one, which was a bit stupid.
Apart from that, it's definitely useable. No crashes or anything like that. And we use it daily.

  • An SCSI card that works with tiger?

I have aquired a Sony SDX S500C AIT-2 drive that I wish to use with my quicksilver G4 server. I need an Ultra wide SCSI card that will work with tiger. I thought this wouldn't be a problem, but after picking up the drive for cheap on eBay it now looks really hard to find anything that works with tiger for less than $400. Does anyone have any experience of an SCSI setup that actually works? The Initio Miles 9100UW looks promising, but according to the Dantz site it is not supported by retrospect, but I assume this doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't work...
Looking forward to hearing your experiences.

Cards from ATTO work with OS X, and are highly reliable.

  • Will Logic Gold 6.3.1 work with Tiger

Does anybody know if older versions of Logic, in my case Gold 6.3.1, work allright with Tiger? I want to install Tiger on my Powerbook this week, but don't want to run into the unpleasant surprise of not being able to use Logic properly. Anybody know?
    Bart

don't know about gold, but today I had to print out some music from an old file, and the file opened fine in v. 6.3 and 5.5 platimun on my powerbook running tiger--- hope that helps!

  • How do i format a thumb drive to work with tiger and a pc

i want to transfer a video file from a pc to tiger but a pc formatted thumb drive isnt recognized in my ibook g4. how should i format my thumb drive

Perhaps the beginnings of an answer to your prob could be found in this thread, PD:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1731284&tstart=0
Personally, I have never had any probs at all with my G4/10.4.11 Powerbook (USB 1.1) seeing any USB drive, even those advertised as working with only 2.0 USB.
IMO, either your USB drive's FAT32 file structure is goofy (run Windows Scandisk & maybe even Defrag on the USB drive), or your Mac OS's USB systemfilestuff is gunked. Or your i's actual USB port(s) aren't working.
Do other USB drives work on your i? If so, the prob's your particular USB drive in question. If not, the prob's your Mac.
    My 2 cents........

  • IChat not working with Tiger user

I recently received a new Macbook with Leopard already installed on it. I have 2 friends who also own Macbooks, who I iChat with.
One of my friends received her Macbook when Leopard just came out, so she had Tiger on it previously . The other friend has had her Macbook longer, and does not have Leopard, just Tiger.
When attempting to start an iChat with the friend with Tiger, it would not work. The weird thing about it though is that it has worked a few times before, if we kept trying and I found if I restarted my computer.
However, now the friend that previously had Tiger had problems with her Macbook and received a brand new one with Leopard already on it. Now it does not work for her to start an iChat with the Tiger user, although she had no problems with her old computer.
    Sorry it's confusing!
But in conclusion, it seems that iChat is not working between a Leopard and Tiger user. The confusing part is that we have gotten it to work before...so I'm really not sure what the problem is.
What can we try to get this to work all the time, without her having to upgrade to Leopard?
I usually get an error response saying there was no data received for the last 10 seconds, and she gets different things about Bandwidth, and saying she cancelled the invitation when she didn't.
    Thanks

Personally, I think it's Leopard that is at fault here. I had Tiger and my family and I would video iChat all the time. But then we downloaded Leopard. We discovered we could no longer video iChat.
My son used 4 different computers (all Macs of course), trying same network and different networks. What he discovered is that the ONLY way video iChat now works is if computers are on the same network. Well, how absurd, because the idea is to be able to video iChat with anyone, not just family members in the same household on the same network.
Apparently, somewhere, Apple (Leopard) bragged about their new improved iChat video on a network. Well, I think they forgot that not all of us are sitting in an office wanting to spend the time to iChat video with co-workers, but have friends and family in other areas we'd like to video iChat with.
So through a process of elimination, it all led back to Leopard as being the culprit, because Tiger to Tiger worked perfectly, and even Leopard to Tiger works IF you are on the same network.
I really do hope Apple supplies a FIX for this problem. I, for one, am VERY disappointed in the fact that I now have Leopard and can no longer video iChat with friends across the country.

  • Canupus 110 video convertor will it work with Tiger and i Movie HD 5 or 6.

I am going to buy a video convertor box for my i Mac G5. I am just having way to much probloms with my Director's Cut 2. I got my Mac Christmas and it came with Tiger already built in. I am wondering will the Canupus 110 work with i Movie HD and Tiger thanks.

    Hi C
Sorry You had to wait. Took a while to make a test environment (iLife6 was
    late).
Now I've tested my Canopus ADVC-300 (have no 110) and Mac OS X.4.5
    QT 7.0.4 and iMovie 6.0.1.
    Result: Worked like a Charm.
If You consider buying a new one. Look at the 300 - and more so if You have
old VHS or other analog tapes. They often have drop-outs and I get the
feeling of that this one fix it one way or another. I'm very impressed.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Working with Tiger

I have a 450Mhz imac that i am planning on using to study for my apple certification but I haven't had any experience with OS X on the G3 iMacs, does it run pretty slow bare bone or will i be able to work with it.

Tiger runs at an usable speed on a 450MHz iMac G3 with 512MB of RAM. If you haven't installed version 4.19 of the iMac's firmware, you should do this before installing Mac OS X 10.2 or above.

  • Putting a modem in Beige's pci slot work with Tiger?

    Hi,
My Beige desktop has Tiger running stably (xpostfacto). Can I pull a pci card dial up telephone modem from a windows pc and use it in my mac?
    Special drivers needed?
    Thanks,
    Louis
Beige DT   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Same answer (almost) as for the B&W:
There is not nor AFAIK has there ever been a PCI modem that worked with Macs. You need an Apple internal modem or an external modem. Since the Beige has built in serial prts, no adapter is needed to use an external serial modem. You could also use an airport base station as these have modems built in as well.

  • Canon CP-220: does it work with Tiger?

I just tried to set up a Canon CP-220 dye-sub printer. Can't get it to print anything from the computer, even though I can set it up in PrintCenter. It always says "stopped", Canon's website is useless, looks like they are unaware of Tiger at least as regards the CP-220 (driver software listed is for 10.1-10.3). Tried it using the "latest" driver software (2.4), and also using the Tiger built in drivers (CP-220 is listed, uses GIMP). This little printer will make beautiful prints direct from my Canon camera, but I want to be able to adjust levels etc and print from Photoshop.
Anybody managed to print to it from their Mac?
    Thanks...

Looks like it just needed a Restart after the uninstall. Working great now.
Bottom line was to not use the Canon driver (2.4 doesn't seem to work with OS 10.4.6), GIMP 5.0 beta 2 that comes with OS X apparently works just fine. If you install the Canon driver, use the uninstall function (via the Canon installer) and then restart your machine...

  • Can't transfer file to .mac with loepard. works with tiger

I have a 12.6 MB file on a CD. I tried to transfer it to my .mac account on two different computers running Leopard. It fails with a permissions or ownership problem of some type. I put the same CD in a very old original iMac running 10.4.10 and it transfers just fine. ??? What.s up..

The exact message is that "the file (name of file) cannot be moved because the folder (account name)-public cannot be modified. Thats the message I get with Leopard. It works fine with tiger.

  • What printer will work with Tiger nicely?

I am just like the untold thousands who are having non-stop printing problems between my hp printer and Mac OS X.
I used 10.3.9 and had non-stop printer problems. Did all the usual: uninstall, get latest driver, fix permissions, yada yada.
I just upgraded to 10.4.5. I was SO looking forward to the many fixes that would inherently come along with a modern OS. Well...the computer sleeps now without crashing, that is nice. I like dashboard. Computer seems to run a bit smoother.
Printer still won't work most of the time. Prints on occasion, locks up, sometimes pushing restart printing ad nauseum will help.
Ok, I'm just gonna admist defeat after reading multiple posts on here, recognizing that OS X is bugged where many printers are concerned.
Here's my question: I would like a printer that works. Any recommendations on a printer, color, laser, or otherwise, that prints without problems with OS X? Are there any printers that are recognized as basically compatible with OS X and don't have all these obvious problems?
    thanks
    PowerMac G4 1.42 duel   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'll gladly accept any help under one condition:
    it fixes the problem.
Here's what I mean by that statement...
so much of the workarounds I saw in posts where frustrating repeatable efforts; must be repeated to keep the printer working.
I am just tired of dealing with it. If I can get some help to make it work, that would be great.
If I have to do this and that every few days to keep it maintained and working, I will go ahead and make the darn thing work with my (dare I say it on here) PC. I'm about to the point of connecting the printer to the PC and just letting the apple sit without a printer. Seems blaspemous to me though...and a shame...he he
    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rob
