Powerbook 145 can't power on

havn't power it on for years. Would like to repair it and have it power on again. Where and who can repair it?

For a computer as old as this one, you would have to ask someone with the necessary experience in reparing electronic devices. Do not automatically expect an authorised service centre to be able to handle it.
Would it be correct to assume that there is absolutely no reaction from the PowerBook when trying to power on? No sounds, and nothing at all on the screen? If so, try removing the battery. Resetting the Power Manager is probably not going to change anything in this case.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1781
If still nothing, check the power adapter. Use a digital multimeter for this. The power adapter output voltage should be 7.5 V DC. The outer ring is minus and the centre is plus .
If the power supply is OK, one would have to open the computer. There are four Torx screws in the lower piece and one Torx screw near the HDI-30 SCSI port. One suspect could be a soldered (surface-mounted) fuse on the main board (reference F1?) near the battery contacts. Other possible culprits could include leaking/damaged (surface-mounted) electrolytic capacitors.

    Hi
A friend of mine found a PB 145 in the trash and gave it to me. The power-supply was damage but i could fix it.
Then i fire it up AND IT WORKED.....
So to my wonders: Is it a 3.5 disk i need to install new software?
Can it be connected to the internet?
How do i clear the HDD and install new software?
What´s the value of this machine? Think the battery is no good, missing something over the hinges and look´s used. But no damages, and all the key workes fine include the "mouse-ball"...

    Hi,
Is it a 3.5 disk i need to install new software?
Yes, you would need a 3.5" diskette. The PowerBook 145 can handle both 1.44 MB (HD) and 800K (DSDD/2DD) Mac-formatted floppies. It is also possible to read/write/format 1.44 MB (HD) and 720K (DSDD/2DD) PC floppies, providing that a PC Exchange control panel (standard in System 7.5 and higher) is installed and active. For handling PC floppies, the systems 7.0.1 and 7.1 contained a separate program called Apple File Exchange instead (on a Tidbits system disk).
You can use a USB floppy drive connected to a modern Mac for file transfers. It is usually a good thing to keep any downloaded MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx) unaltered until on the old PowerBook. If a PC is used for downloads, this is very important (in order to avoid file damages). Once on the PB 145, use an appropriate old version of StuffIt Expander for the decoding (post back for further information, if necessary).
A Norwegian System 7.0.1 can be found here. Unfortunately, the System 7 Tune-Up does not seem to be part of the Norwegian version, so you may want to try the complete British English 7.0.1 here. BTW, the PowerBook 145B is another model, which requires at least System 7.1.
Alternatively, a Norwegian System 7.5.3 has been made available for download here. Please note though that an 80 MB hard drive would be needed for a 7.5.3 installation.
How do i clear the HDD and install new software?
For example, the Disk Tools floppy of System 7.0.1 may allow the hard disk to be reformatted (the Apple HD SC Setup utility). Use the existing system to create all required sector-copied system floppies et cetera from disk images first, via Disk Copy 4.2.
Can it be connected to the internet?
Yes, as Niteshooter indicated above, this is possible. Without a SCSI-to-Ethernet adapter (there was one from Dayna, too), and without an internal modem (probably the best solution in this case), you could connect an external serial modem to the round (MiniDIN-8) modem port. A PPP program would be needed for dial-up. For systems earlier than 7.5, MacTCP has to be installed separately. The exact web browser and/or email program depends upon the operating system used.
You will find many shareware programs here.
A manual for the PowerBook 145 can be found here.

    Hello,
There is a known issue with Flash not working in Power Point in Flash Player 14.0.0.145.  It will be fixed in the next release.  In the mean time, you can download a beta build containing the fix at http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayerbeta.
If you have comments on the beta build, please post them at Flash Player Beta Channel, instead of here on the 'Using Flash Player forums.

Wow, that's amazing. Sometimes I wonder... (but I won't say anything per TOS).
YES, our 12-inch PowerBooks, the little mighty ultra-portable that could, can be used with 23-inch displays, if you are referring to Part No. M9178LL/A.
    http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html
As you said, you just need the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter, which should have come in the box with your PowerBook. (I'm sure you know that the other adapter is Mini-DVI to VGA, and will not fit if you tried). If you don't have one, you can get them at Apple (retail and online) for $19.95, or even at Best Buy.
Note that Best Buy sells Apple's adapter, and their own "Dynex" brand which is a bit cheaper. (That is, if your Best Buy has the Apple Shop inside). Or, if you have a CompUSA near you--yes, I know people, they are closing down--you might be able to get one at a discount.

My lock botton is broken and I use the accesery botton to lock it. That being said I can't power down my iPod. I need help, I don't know what to do! Could you tell me how I can power down my iPod or how I can fix the slowness and the shutting down of the apps.

    - Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    - Next, reset the iPod
To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices
    Then you can try:
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Powerbook G4 Can't "See" Wireless Signal from Ubee Modem/Router

I was given a G4 Powerbook while out of town and it found the wireless signal in an apartment complex and a major airport just fine. But upon returning home it can't "see" the signal from my (Time Warner, Road Runner Extreme) Ubee modem/router. My Mac Mini's Airport sees the Ubee wireless signal fine, but the older Powerbook G4 can't. (The Airport signal in the menu bar has "bars" but they are grayed out.
Can an older G4 connect with the newer Ubee modem/router? Are there security settings that will allow this?
    Tx,
    WK

CRMDVM -- Thanks for the helpful info -- you are probably right on both counts:
The apartments where I picked up a signal is in an "old folks" apt. complex, meaning the router I was picking up was probably old -- compatible with the G4 lineage. And the Atlanta airport probably has a wireless system to allow the vast number of old and new computers that people carry to connect.
My Mac Mini connects via WPA2 Personal security code, and I set the G4 to the same security (in the Network preference pane) but still nothing. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is still grayed out -- it isn't the "blank" icon as when Airport is turned off. It has the wireless wave lines in the icon, but just grayed out.
Maybe the G4 is just too old to "see" the newer wireless signal from the new modem/router.
Thanks again for your help -- you definitely provided more than I knew. (btw, I'm just above you in Union County in Stallings).
    WK

  • PowerBook G4 can't see external hard drive

All of a sudden, my PowerBook G4 can no longer see my external hard drive (Maxtor 160 GB drive). The drive doesn't appear in the Finder, and it doesn't mount on the desktop. Thus, I have no way of accessing the files on my external hard drive.
I can see the external hard drive when I launch Disk Utility (and also when I launch TechTool Pro), so I know the hard drive and the USB connections are working.
Can someone please help on this?? I've tried unplugging everything and rebooting with no results. Thank you.

  • Where can high-power video cards be installed on a first-gen Mac Pro?

I have a first-gen Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900 XT in Slot-1 and a Geforce 7300 GT in Slot-4. The x1900 XT powers a 30" monitor and the 7300GT powers 2 x 20" monitors. The 7300GT card died and is being replaced with an 8800 GT.
Now it seems fairly obvious that for gaming the 8800 GT is superior to my X1900 XT. Ideally I'd like to just throw my new 8800 GT in Slot-1 and use it for my 30" monitor and then run the 2 20's off the X1900 XT in Slot-4. The problem with that is that the x1900 XT is a huge card and physically won't fit in Slot-4 because it runs in to the hard drives above it.
*Now, on to the questions / clarification:*
_Question 1_: Is the first-gen Mac Pro the same as the new Mac Pro in that high-power cards can only be used in Slot-1 and Slot-2? If so, why does it come in the standard configuration of:
    Slot-1: x16
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x1
    Slot-4: x8
It would seem that Apple purposely did this so you would run 2 high-power cards in Slot-1 and Slot-4 and keep them away from each other for heat reasons. The new Mac Pro has x16 bandwidth on Slot-1 and Slot-2 and it would make sense why they say to only install high-power cards in Slot-1 and Slot-2 for it.
_Question 2_: PCI-e configurations. There are a few ways I could tweak the configuration of the expansion slots to make this setup work. I'm curious as to which you would think is best:
*Option 1 (default PCI-e config, only works if a high-power card can be installed in slot 4):*
    Slot-1: x16 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x1
    Slot-4: x8 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
Now, the first issue is can the 8800 even run in Slot-4 due to the supposed power problem? If so, would there be a difference in performance for gaming at x8? I know this is backwards because you'd want the "primary" card to run on x16 but that's just not possible with this PCI-e configuration. If there is a difference in performance would an 8800 GT at x8 still run significantly faster in games than an X1900 XT a x16? I'd think so, but that's assuming the x8 isn't a real bottleneck.
*Option 2 (the only solution if the cards have to be installed in the first 2 slots):*
    Slot-1: x8 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
    Slot-2: x8 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-3: x4
    Slot-4: x4
You still have the issue of the 8800 only running at x8 (if it even makes a difference, not sure). The benefit I see here is that instead of the X1900 XT dumping all of it's heat in to the 8800 GT (since heat rises) you have the 8800 GT on the bottom where it might run cooler. The X1900 XT would then also be limited to x8 but it's not even being used for gaming so it wouldn't matter at all. The X1900 XT is huge and would cover up Slot-3 but I don't use the other 2 slots so I don't mind.
*Option 3 (only works if Slot-3 can actually power an X1900 XT):*
    Slot-1: x16 - GeForce 8800 GT - 30" monitor for major tasks / gaming
    Slot-2: x1
    Slot-3: x4 - Radeon X1900 XT - 2 x 20" monitors for minor tasks / programs
    Slot-4: x4
This seems ideal only because this is the only setup that can get the 8800 to run at x16. The issue now is can Slot-3 run a high-power card? The card doesn't really NEED the power since it's just for running basic apps and not gaming. Again, the X1900 would cover up Slot-4 but it's not being used so no worries there.
*At the end of the day, the most important thing to figure out is:* where can high-power cards be installed in a first-gen mac pro? Once we know that we can figure out Question 2. The instructions that come with the 8800 GT say it can be installed in any of the 4 slots, but I don't know if I really believe that.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for your help, I think we've beat this horse to death :P. I'm glad I got it all figured out though.
Now the only question is if the gaming performance of the 8800 is actually enough better than the X1900 to warrant making it my "primary" video card. As long as Adobe CS3 apps don't rely on core image like some of the Apple Pro apps do I think it will be fine. If they do I'd have to probably just stick with the X1900 since I use CS3 every single day and only play video games once a week if I'm lucky.
What are your thoughts on the X1900 vs the 8800 GT for CS3?
Edit: This just occurred to me... Since I'm going to have to run them as x8, x8, x4, x4 there isn't really going to be a "primary" card since neither will be at 16x. I guess I could technically just plug my 30" monitor in to either one of them depending on what I feel like doing. If I'm going to play a game I just plug in to the 8800 and if I'm working I plug in to the 1900. The computer is up on the desk so moving the monitor from one card to the other takes about 10 seconds. I could just plug 1 20" monitor in to each so there's always a free DVI port on either one.
It's not the most elegant but I guess it would be a good compromise if I wanted the "best" performance in either situation. I realize the Radeon 3870 is probably the best of both worlds but I really don't want the noise. I already modified my 1900 with this after 6 months of listening to the lawn mower that was the stock 1900 cooler: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=147
    I'm just hoping the 8800 isn't too loud .
