Powerbook 150 wont recognize floppy disc

I inserted a windows (dos)formatted floppy disc into my newly acquired powerbook 150, it does not show on the desktop and I cannot eject it anymore. Any suggestions appreciated.

A DOS-formatted floppy does not appear on the Desktop without a PC Exchange control panel (part of System 7.5) installed and active.
The standard way of ejecting a floppy disk is to drag its icon to the Wastebasket (Trash). One can also eject a disk via the Put Away command in the File menu. Do not use the Eject Disk command in the Special menu, unless you wish to swap floppies (only for certain purposes).
Normally, an inserted floppy should come out when the computer is switched off.
In case of a problem, it is possible to manually eject a diskette by means of a straightened paper clip. See chapter 9 in the 030-5538 manual here for details.

I have a PowerBook 145B but something is wrong with the systemfolder so it wont boot. I've downloaded System 7.0.1 from Apple and put it on Floppys with my Macintosh Classic. The PowerBook boots from the floppy but after a minute it just comes up a window thats completely white.
I've tried a lot of things, but my Macintosh classic (with original floppys) runs 7.0.0. And the PowerBook needs atleast 7.0.1 and did run 7.1.0 as original OS.
    How do I fix this?

Because your PowerBook 145B shipped with OS 7.1, it can't run an earlier version of the Mac OS, such as 7.0.1.  Unfortunately, Apple never made OS 7.1 available for download.  You can run OS 7.5.1, 7.5.3, and 7.5.5 on your PowerBook, but I'd recommend doing so with the maximum amount of supported memory - 8 MBs.  The 19-part download of OS 7.5.3 is segmented, so that each one will fit on a 1.44 MB floppy disk.  The problem is that the 19-diskette set isn't an installer set as such, having no bootable disk.  It's solely intended to be used to transfer the individual segments to the resident hard drive in the computer.  Once that's done, double-clicking the first .smi segment creates the OS 7.5.3 installer disk image on the desktop, which you drag onto the hard drive icon.  This produces a folder with the OS 7.5.3 installer in it.  I've done this before with an old Mac LC and it works.  You can also download the 3-diskette OS 7.5.5 Update and run that.  These downloads can be found on the same page where you found the OS 7.0.1 download: Older Software Downloads.

  • My powerbook g4 wont boot

Hello today i need to ask some people why my powerbook g4 wont boot it goes all the way to the blue screen and then it has the spinning lines than it goes to the mouse cursur and just stays there. I trien reseting pmu, pram, nvram but nothing happens i have the mac disk but when i put it in and hold c when i start it just has a blank white screen and it pops the cd out. i tried open firmware way by typing boot cd:,

      just an ordinary mac user

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Press the Power Button and immediately press and hold down the Command  and the S keys as the machine starts up.  This boots you into Single-user mode and you should see white text appear on the screen.
When you see the # Command prompt, type /sbin/fsck-fy and hit the Return.
Now sit back & let your computer do its thing.  This should take approximately 15 minutes or so.  Depending on how messed up your computer is.  Just be patient.
If and when you see the message File System was modified repeat the steps above again & again until you hopefully see the message "no problems were found." When that happens type reboot and hit Return again.
If these steps do not work then boot from your install disc to repair disk.  To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.

  • ITunes wont recognize blank CDs

I am all up to date on my updates for both iTunes and my macbook and for some reason when I try to burn a CD through iTunes it wont recognize the blank disc. I have burned discs through iTunes before and have used these particular blank CDs as well. Also when i insert an audio CD it recognizes it just fine. Weird. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am having the same problems when trying to burn or play burned CDs through iTunes. Even when it looks as though it successfully burned a disc through iTunes, when I attempt to play a burned disc, the disc drive ejects the CD without explanation. And, that's only after it appears to successfully completed the burn process and preceded by anywhere from 3-10 failed burn attempts because it ejects every blank disc while iTunes gets hung up on it's original message "Please insert blank CD" twice and then quits the burn process requiring you to start over with the 3rd, 5th, etc. blank discs. This is the most recent problem in a long line of issues I've experienced with my iMac, which is only 6 months old and I will never purchase a Mac again. Every previous problem since purchasing my iMac posted as a question went without any answer or assistance from Apple and I'm gobsmacked by the lack of service or support.

  • Help PowerBook 150 not Run disket flash Question mark System 7.5.3 - 18 parts.

PowerBook 150 not Run disket flash Question mark System 7.5.3 - 18 parts.  Please Help !!!

    Hi,
First of all, in order to verify whether the 7.5.3 system software files are of the type earlier downloadable from Apple (with one large image file split onto floppy-sized segments), could you confirm that the first of the eighteen files has a file name with ".smi" at the end (before .bin or .hqx), and that the remaining seventeen files each include ".part"? The US version had totally nineteen files (one. smi and eighteen .part), but as I indicated above, this was different depending on language version.
If the PowerBook 150 is empty (without an operating system), you will need a startup floppy. Do you have access to a Disk Tools floppy for the PB 150? A Network Access Disk 7.5 floppy would be useful under all circumstances, and can be used as an alternative startup disk (and the system folder could be copied to the hard disk, and would then act as a temporary system). The problem today is that Apple's older software downloads list, which contained the Network Access Disk 7.5, does not appear to be available any more.
If you have the NAD 7.5 file already, the normal way of creating a bootable floppy was via a utility called Disk Copy (on another Macintosh computer with a built-in floppy drive). Disk Copy 6.3.3 can still be downloaded (https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1262). The Make a Floppy command under the Utilities menu is used to create properly sector-copied floppy disks. Please note that the Disk Copy utility is not needed or used to mount a self-mounting image (.smi).
There were special methods allowing an NAD 7.5 floppy to be made through a Windows PC as well (using a Windows version of StuffIt/Aladdin Expander and a utility such as WinImage).
It is also possible to obtain a version of StuffIt Expander for the PB 150 through a PC (but the PowerBook would need at least a temporary operating system first). With access to an older Windows PC (capable of running a DOS program) with a floppy drive, you may want to try the following: Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB diskette via FORMAT A: in DOS or the "full" formatting option under Windows. Download the MACDISK.EXE file from http://rrzs42.uni-regensburg.de/Macintosh/files/macftp.html . Run this MACDISK.EXE (DOS) program on the Windows PC. Follow the instructions on screen. The result will be a Mac-formatted (sic!) floppy that could be moved to and used with the PB 150. This floppy contains a StuffIt Expander installer. Once installed, drag downloaded .bin files onto the StuffIt Expander program icon to decode them.

  • My macbook wont recognize my optical drive

My macbook wont recognize my optical drive

You can try resetting the SMC and pram:
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
You might also try a cleaning disc, sometimes that helps. Does it not recognize cd's and DVD's or just me of the two?

  • Pavilion G7 wont recognize new hard drive

My old samsung 640 gig hard drive was failing in my G7laptop I bought in 2012. I bought a replacement 500 gig drive that was similar as the old one. After installing it and trying to run the HP supplied recovery discs it wont recognize the new drive. It starts to boot from the disc and then about 2 minutes later a a little window pops up that says no HDD installed and then shuts off. I boot into BIOS and try to run a HDD scan and it says no HDD installed. To troubleshoot to make sure the motherboard or SATA cable isn't bad I reinstalled my old HDD and was able to go into the HP UEFI and scan the old hard drive so that can't be the problem if it can recognize my old drive . I tried calling tech support and all I get is them trying to sell me a HP supplied drive which I don't need because in my technical mind there should be no difference in the drives. They are both SATA 3 and therefore compatible. Please help!

Thanks mbutler1981. Advance Format drives shouldn't be a problem for this computer, it is older one that you can run into issues with.
So basically you are trying to get the drive to be recognized by the BIOS. First verify the physical connections are solid, and in place.
The next thing to do when the new drive is connected is to perform a hard reset:  Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset
If you are unable to see the drive in the BIOS, verify that you have the latest version of BIOS using this for guidance:
Update the BIOS. If it is lower than version F.26 then you can update it: HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processors) Version F.26
If you are still having problems with this drive in this computer, the problem is either the drive itself, or a compatibility issue. The manufacturer of the drive might be able to confirm the final diagnosis.

  • My iMac 400 DV wont recognize a DVD

I recently got a iMac 400 DV (slot-loading). It has a DVD/CD combo. For some reason the mac recognizes a CD but wont recognize a DVD. I am using Panther 10.3.9. Any suggestions? Everytime I insert a DVD (original movie) it spins for a while (20 seconds) than spits it out.

    The 1990/2000 iMac DV 400MHz came with a DVD-ROM drive (not a 'Combo' drive - a 'Combo' drive is DVD-ROM and CD-RW). The 2001 iMac 400MHz came with a CD-ROM drive only.
I suggest you obtain a cleaning disc and try cleaning the drive.
    regards

Remote Disc Can't recognize Blank disc, but it does recognize other discs. I am trying to burn something from my itunes on my mac mini to a blank disc on my windows computer. What could be wrong?
I can see other discs such as music and stuff so I know I have installed it correctly but how come I can't see the blank disc that I need to burn?

You can't burn discs remotely, you can only read data discs remotely (i.e. you cannot play movie DVDs either).
Either copy the files to the remote computer or get an external drive.

  • Retrieve data from a powerbook 150 and 170

    hi all,
i have a powerbook 170 that starts up with the flashing-question-mark-disk icon and a powerbook 150 that does not start up at all. i have data on both that i would like to retrieve (old hypercard stacks; anybody know of a modern reader?).
what is the best way to achieve this?
is it easy to open up the powerbooks and just remove the hard drive? and would it then be easy to buy a cable to connect the bare hard drive into a moden USB port?
    thanks!

    hi jan,
i've made some progress regarding my older powerbooks!
    (1) i pulled the IDE hard drive out of my 150 and am waiting to borrow a friend's IDE-to-USB adapter.
    (2) i've made several attempts to cure my 170 of its flashing disk icon upon startup:
    (a) i found an old mac disk labeled "Norton Utilities Mac v. 3.0 Emergency Disk," and when i startup from that, i first get the happy mac icon, then the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen, but shortly after i get a window with a bomb icon and a single button that has no text on it. when i click the button (which is the only thing i can do, at that point), the emergency disk is ejected and the powerbook restarted. the same thing occurs when i start up with the emergency disk while holding down the shift key (to turn off extensions) or the spacebar.
    (b) i've tried booting from various iterations of "Disk Tools" for system 7, as you suggested, using a PC running the commercial application TransMac to generate the actual boot disks. both of the Disk Tools image files from this website (http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/disktools.html) initially give me the happy mac icon, but soon the disk is ejected and the all-too-familiar disk icon returns. however, instead of a flashing question mark, i now have a flashing X over the disk icon...
    (c) i tried every single boot disk i could download from this website (http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/bootdisks.html), but none of them even give me the happy mac icon - the disks are simply ejected.
    (d) i even downloaded a Network Access disk image for system 7.5, but this too was simply ejected with no happy mac icon...
so now i'm at a point where i'm wondering:
    (1) am i simply using the wrong boot disk?
    (2) is TransMac improperly creating boot disks? (i'm thinking no, because i used it to generate two Disk Tools disks that at least gave me the happy mac initially...)
the norton emergency disk gives me hope that this startup issue can be resolved.
sorry for such a long post. i hope you have some ideas for me!

I recently upgraded to the newest iTunes version and now my older Ipod is no longer recognized by my computer. iTunes doesnt open, it just gives me an error message in the bottom right corner saying Unknown Device. Ive tried looking for / updating drivers, reseting, everything and nothing works. I tried every USB port on my laptop as well. Running Win XP. Can anyone offer any other suggestions on how i can fix this???
    Thanks

Its been working perfectly for 4 years until last week. I have the USB/FireWire combo for hooking it up to my computer. It worked with all the older version of iTunes and now that 7.1.1 is on there, it wont recognize it at all. The computer is convinced there are no drivers for the "unknown device" and all searches performed for the missing drivers come up empty. The computer cannot see the iPod as an iPod, and none of this happened until I downloaded the most recent iTunes.
