Powerbook 17" crashes with any tiger updates

This is a nightmare, actually now 3am. I upgraded the Mac from Panther after working fine. 10.4.0 was fine then I upgraded to 10.4.3 combo and had problems with mail. After a few attempts, reinstalled the OS, worse now.
I've wiped the hard disk and 10.4.0 is good but as soon as I update to 10.4.3 is kernal panics and I tried 10.4.2 and gets as far just after the login and can see the background. I logged in in safe mode and deleted the user library so there is hardly anything and it still crashes.
Any ideas? Might try and remove ram. I can only think of a hardware problem but there was no indication in 10.3.9.
Thanks

Wrong category but anyway, I narrowed it down to Ram or resetting Open Firmware. Ram is back in and now working.

WIndows 8.1 64bit, Windows Installers stalls with any install, updates or third party programs. Third party program installations work if I restart in safe mode. Updates don't as they cannot be installed in safe mode and require normal mode.
Been happening for months now. Some installations after a long time finally proceed, others dont.
Already trying uninstalling antivirus (Bitdefender) with no result.
    Thanks

Please let me know if you are having the same issues and what you did to resolve.  Thank you

My iPad 1 crashes every time I connect to the internet now.  I assume it has something to do with a recent update and it is very annoying.  It started happening about every hour or so and now happens about every few minutes.  Thanks for anyone who has suggestions.

  • Did anyone else's ipad2 crash with the latest update of 7.1.1?

Did anyone else's ipad2 crash after the latest update of 7.1.1?

If the unit has NEVER been jailbroke, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...  Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

I tried updating my iphone and now it says I have to restore my phone. I've never had this problem with the previous updates, I'm confused?

Same with me. The Upgrade hung up and froze the phone. Do the restore and then back it up when you get into iTunes from a previous save. It takes the better part of an hour our of your day depending how many apps and songs you have to get everything back together. It is a royal pain but I didn't lose anything.
Download a youtube app. It's not in iOS6.

  • ITunes crashes with message to update. Update fails.

I have iTunes 7.7.1.11, which was running fine until a few weeks ago but now it crashes as soon as I start it, with a message to update the QuickTime software. This started even before iTunes 8 was available, and still occurs - with the result that I cannot upgrade to iTunes 8. Here's everything that I have tried:
    *1. Double-clicked on QuickTime shortcut*
-> Got dialog-box with 2 buttons - "Cancel" and "Do It Now" - and a message saying: "Some of your QuickTime software is out of date. You can fix this problem by updating to the latest version."
-> Also, simultaneously i.e. while the above dialog box is still open, the MS Windows dialog reporting a crash also comes up.
    *2. Ran Apple Software Update*
-> Got dialog-box saying: "Your software is up-to-date."
*3. Downloaded latest QuickTime installer (7.5 for Windows) from Apple site and ran it*
-> Because QuickTime was already installed, I was presented with 2 options: Repair or Remove. Clicked on Repair.
-> Seemed to go through the installation process successfully.
*4. Again double-clicked on QuickTime shortcut*
-> Again, same result as earlier.
*5. Uninstalled QuickTime by running the installer and selecting Remove*
-> After going through the uninstall steps, saw the following status message in the uninstall progess bar/status window:
    "Rolling back action: QuickTimeUnInstallMSIProc_rollback"
-> After this, the process completed with this message in the "QuickTime Installer Completed" dialog:
"The installer encountered errors before the requested operations for QuickTime could be completed. To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again. Click Finish to exit the installer."
-> There was no other option but to click Finish.
*6. Ran the QuickTime installer again*
-> Again, only 2 options: Repair or Remove (as in step 3). No Install option.
So, now, I can repeat steps 3-6 again and again, but it is status quo. And, now that iTunes 8 is available, when I try to update iTunes, the download is fine but then it says "An error occurred while installing ..."
    Any suggestions/tips welcome.

  • IMac crashing with new safari update

my imac (i7 16 gig ram 18months old) crashers just after a startup and a message says to push any key as your system crashed all I have done is update safari how do I boot and do a check like we used to be able when the os came on a disk

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Mail Gets Progressively Worst With Each Tiger Update

    Hello Apple User/Fans/Staff,
I have noticed that Mail gets progressively worst every time their is an update. I had asked about this is in a previous posting and was led to believe it is something I was doing, such as making all applications are closed before installations. Well, I would always need to reset all my several email accounts for my small business after installing the updates. This was getting frustrating. Now after updating to 10.4.10 Mail only remain open after launch for a minute and a half then crashes. I have sent several reports to Apple. The sad part is I am unable to export all accounts and messages to Thunderbird because Mail has its own format and it will not remain open long enough. I am disappointed and sadden with Mail. I hope Apple is working on a fix that does not mean buying Leopard! Mail in 10.2 has been the most stable version in my opinion.
    Make some noise about Mail!!
    Ralston

    Ralston,
I can assure you that the updates to reach 10.4.10 have not caused your Mail problems. However, problems you had but did not find to correct before the updates might be made worse with each update.
I use 10 different accounts, with all types (POP, IMAP, gmail and .mac, and have no such troubles.
To examine whether there is any problem with the application itself, as it is installed on your particular computer, create a New User Account, and as that New User setup one or more email accounts in Mail and test. If this works, you can even migrate your com.apple.mail.plist file and the entire Mail folder (assuming you have something to help with the migration, such as an external hard drive, and setup your exact Mail folder to run under the New User, giving us another test of whether some issue exists with your preferences, or not.
Have you Verified or done Disk Repair to your hard drive -- did it pass? Have you considered resetting Launch Services?
It may not be something you are doing but it is something very unique to your Mac and its OSX installation.

  • Stability issues, playback stutters, and occasional crashes with 8.1 update

Hi all, I'm having a bunch of weird stability issues with Premiere CC 8.1 on Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5. I'm working on a medium sized 1080p project with about 60-80 pieces of media totaling about 60GB. Footage was from a DSLR and was transcoded into prores 422 for editing.
Initially after updating to 8.1 and creating my project I didn't notice any issues but after progressing further in the edit and adding additional video tracks, titles, and a couple small AE comps I've noticed a pretty drastic falloff in performance. I will get occasional crashes and playback is slow to respond. After pressing spacebar or L it'll hang for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute before actually playing back. During playback it'll get caught up and hang and I have to stop playback and wait a bit for things to return to normal. I'm also experiencing performance issues scrubbing through footage in my project bins.
I've tried some basic troubleshooting like cache clearing, preference trashing, video driver updating, and un- and reinstalling to no avail. It'll sometimes work ok but usually displays most of the above issues. I've been using premiere for a bit over a year now and haven't experienced any of these issues on my other older machines, let alone my new MBP. Premiere is usually very snappy and misbehaves rarely.
    Technical bits:
    Premiere CC (2014) v8.1
    15" Retina MacBook Pro
    Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
    1TB Apple SSD

    Hi Ian,
Is it possible to reinstall your GPU drivers? I have heard that this might be at the heart of this issue. Also, trash preferences. Here is the full list I'm asking Mac folks to try.
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
    Reboot
Report back if anything here worked for you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Emac Crashes With Any Application.  Please Help?

    Can anyone please help?
I have had an Emac computer for years now.  I hardly ever use it, but it has a lot of my old video files and documents on it.  I mainly work with my macbook pro.  Until recently, my Emac has been working fine, but I tried to use it today and it seems to suddenly be fubar.
Here's what happened.  I wanted to take an old (.mov) video file and transfer it to my macbook pro.  I used an 8GB pen drive.  The transfer to the pen drive seemed to take literally no time, but the video file also still seemed to play from the pen drive on the Emac, so I thought it was fine.  Took it to the macbook pro.  The video file wouldn't play, it was just a black screen for the duration of the video.
I decided to try and export another version on the Emac, in case that would help.  I had a version I'd colour-corrected in Final Cut Express, so I opened that.  The Emac then did what I have this evening learned is a "kernel panic".  I didn't know what that was though, so I tried again and the same thing.
The original edit of the video had been done in iMovie, so I tried to open that next.  It opened, but as soon as I tried to play the video, "kernel panic".
I tried again and no "kernel panic", but everything crashed and the entire system became unresponsive, so I had to restart.
I decided I would try to burn the .mov onto a CD and transfer it that way.  During the burning process, the system crashed.  When I restarted, the computer was unable to read anything on the disc.
I then went to do some online research.  When I opened firefox, the system crashed.
Can anyone tell me what's going on and how I can start to go about getting things working again?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry. Been under the weather with a flu bug that triggered some "loverly" asthma things! Good to see you back, although I had hoped it would be to say you had the old eMac all sorted and learning new tricks.
I'm rather at a standstill here. The fact that the capacitors you can see are not affected doesn't necessarily mean those that are elsewhere under the cover are also OK. There are reports that people have removed the logic board to find the hidden capacitors leaking even though the ones visible in the RAM door were fine
Because a PRAM battery tests at 3.6V in hand doesn't always mean it's producing that under load when installed. However, the eMacs are not so picky about PRAM battery power as older models, and there are a couple of easy things that get you around a dead/weak battery anyway:
    1) Boot from a system CD/DVD, then immediately restart booting from  the hard drive.
    2) Boot while holding command + option + p + r and keep holding that combo until you hear a total of three startup chimes, then let go the keys and allow booting to continue.
The first method uses startup values from the optical disk and the second one resets the computer's PRAM back to factory defaults.
I keep coming back to your symptoms being the same as the eMac I worked with that WAS in the affected SN range. The computer would boot fine, but any app opened crashed within seconds.
.  I feel like you need some cheap or free hands-on help with this--at least someone you can talk to on the phone in real time. Have you looked for a Mac User Group (MUG) near you? I know you live where the population density can put neighbors miles away and some cities light-years away, but a MUG is a good place to find a guru on older models. The other option would be to ask of the IT staff (the worker-bees, not the bosses) at a school of university that has used Macs. Some great resources there.  Here's the find-a-MUG link:  http://appleusergroupresources.com/find-a-group/  We just retired our last eMac. My wife has been using a 1.42G model almost exactly 7 years and, as she's more into social networking now to stay in touch with our adult children, and our tax software will no longer run on PowerPC. I talked her into a refurbed iMac 21.5-inch mid-2011 we got directly from Apple for under US$1000. Nice computer.

  • X800 pro graphic card crashes with any 3d game

    Help !!!!!!!!!!!
I have a radeon x800 pro (256) card.  I have tried this card in 2 machines, both with MSI boards (neo range).
The card will work for days and days on the net or watching movies, but after about 3-5 minutes playing a 3d game (FEAR...) the screen just goes crazy !!!!!!!!!!
    Any ideas ???????????????????????????????
    Thanks

I think you are encountering artifacts with your graphics card which leads to a few possibilities:
    1) Overheating.
    2) Insufficient Power.
    3) Bad Installation of drivers.
    4) DirectX not updated.
I would need you to post your full system specs + PSU specs amps for more verification purposes.
