Powerbook 17 inch beeping!!!!!! HELP!

Today my powerbook started making some soft beeps internally not from the speakers... i bought it at the Apple store in houston on Novembert and they isntalled the aditional 1GB of ram.. it was working great!! until today.. I checked Hardware test and came ok.. so i dont know what is wrong...
It beeps when Im typing a document in texedit, word and right now at this forum...
whats wrong...
Please Help..

This issue is starting to "sound" (pun) more like a hardware glich even though you ran the hardware test.
I would hesitate (for now) doing a complete clean by Onyx, since nearly all your settings and preferences would have to be redone ... a pain!
Rather than continue to perform trial & error approaches (with the risk of really creating bigger problems), return to the Apple Store in Houston and have the tech check-out each RAM module and the PB itself.
You could try one more thing first: after shutting down the PB, remove power cable, remove the battery, discharge the static (see PB manual for RAM installation info), carefully remove the RAM cover plate (use a very small Phillips screwdriver or small eyeglass screwdriver), carefully remove RAM modules, switch their position and FIRMLY reseat each RAM module.
Replace the RAM cover plate without stripping the screws ... put back the battery ... plug in the power cable ... reboot.
If that doesn't help .... on to Houston!

    1) Make sure that your project is in the same aspect ratio as your camera. If your camera shoots 16:9. make a 16:9 project.
    2) Check the clip inspector for the clip in your project to see if Image Stabilization is turned on. Stabilization works by zooming in, so you may want to turn it off.

  • Trouble removing screws on Powerbook...What helps?

I'm having trouble removing the screws on both of the sides of the powerbook:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-12-Inch-867-MHz/Metal-Framework/ 53/15/Page-4#top
They're very tight and nothing seems to help.
What can I use or do?

    J.F.
These screws are very stubborn. You need to be very careful not to damage the head of the screw. I did that the other day and was fortunate that I had it out a bit and my son-in-law, who has a steadier hand than I, used a thin cutting disk on a dremel tool to make it a slotted screw. So, what can you do? You could try a tiny drop of WD40 or penetrating oil, and give it time to penetrate. If you can't get it, take it to the Genius Bar and get some help.

  • Powerbook display went out, Help!

I was just using Safari, and seemingly out of nowhere, I heard a loud whirring (I think from the optical drive) and then the display went black--mostly, I can still sort of make out the menu bar and dock. I've had this happen once before, but that time it was because the power cord came unplugged. That is not the case this time--the power cord is plugged in and the indicator is lit green, meaning it is fully powered. Hitting the power button brought the display back to life for fifteen or twenty seconds, but then it went out again. I tried restarting, no help. My external monitor is working fine however.
Powerbook G4, 1.5 ghz, 12". Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know exactly what you've done so far, but I'll start from scratch.
    1. First (and I suspect you've already done this), go  to System Preferences/Displays, and choose 1920 x 1200 resolution. You can pick another resolution later, but let's start at the max and move down later, if you choose.
    2. If you cannot change your screen resoution, please enclose some more detailed info, i.e., what happened when you tried to go to different resolutions. Did it stay the same size? Get any error messages?
Oh, and leave your responses here, so others can give their input!

  • I am unable to get itunes to run on my powerbook g4. Please help!

My sister gave me her old powerbook g4. She erased the hard drive and relaoded the software. I cant get itunes to open or run. It said i needed quicktime so I downlaoded it from the apple site but it still will not run. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a different download that I need? Please help. I am new to apple computers so please be paitcent with me.

Your computer may need a series of updates to bring it up to speed with the last versions of software supported by 10.4  Note that these will themselves be several years old since Apple hasn't supported Tiger for several years.  In particular you cannot upgrade to the newest iTunes or use any brand new i-devices on a computer running 10.4
One way to do updates is to run Software Update.  Do the updates one by one since trying to do many at one time often results in problems.  Use Disk Utility to repair permissions before and after.
For general Tiger update questions I suggest you post on the Tiger 10.4 forum.  As for iTunes, the newest version you can run is 9.2.1 available at
iTunes 9.2.1 (the newest that will run under Tiger) - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
should be a faulty boot rom
According to this link you are correct: Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2
According to that link contacting an Apple certified provider or taking it into an Apple store is probably your best bet.

  • Powerbook 12 inch won't boot and I need to create a startup CD/DVD

My son's PB 12" won't boot up. We are on vacation and I have my 13 macbook with me, but none of the support disks.. I am wondering if there is a way to create a boot CD/DVD from mine to use with his, to hopefully get his computer working again. Any help would be great!

Hi, Ross. No, there isn't. The OS that runs your Intel-based MacBook won't run at all on the PPC-based Powerbook.
Hold down the Command and S keys on the Powerbook while turning it on, and use fsck in Single-User Mode to attempt file system repairs, as described in this article.

  • HT1338 3 beeps help!!

I got my 13' macbook pro at Christmas in 2011. It was working fine until a few months ago then I was sitting on my laptop and it froze and started making these 3 beeps repetedly. I turned my computer off and then back on and it was fine. A week or so later it happened again, I googled it and everything but most people get the beeping noises on startup mine just happens randomly. Should I just leave it or take it in to the apple store?? Does anyone know how much it would cost???
    Thanks For the Help!!!!!!!!

If you are uncomfortable trying to do these things by yourself, then yes, do take it into the Apple Store.  They know exactly how to do this in no time. They may charge you for new RAM, but if this makes you nervous, it's worth it.  And if anything need tweaking afterward, it's on Apple, not you.
It may be one of the chips came loose, in which case, they can fix it in 5 minutes.

  • A22m, one long beep help

One long beep ( lasting about 1 sec ), every once in a while, no errors, no noticeable problem with the operation of the laptop. This started happening when I upgraded memory ( swapped out a 64MB IBM module with Kingston KTM-TP390X/128 ) and hard drive over a year ago. I run Win2k. I just upgraded memory again swapping out the Kingston memory with a Samsung 256MB module but I still get the one long beep now and then. All memory is recognized and utilized. I've never seen any documentation on what just one long beep means. Any ideas? I'm just about ready to open this laptop up and destroy that speaker.

If I remember rightly, it's been a while since I've seen an A-Series, there is a BIOS menu; Config > Alarm. Here you can disable the Power Beep and Volume Beep. Maybe you could try disabling them - might be a help ??

  • Constant beeping: help me please

    Hello,
I keep hearing these beeps, sometimes its 3 with 5 second pauses in between and 5 random pauses.
I tried opening up my Activity Monitor, but I dont understand anything nor what to do.
Please help me, this beeping is driving me up the walls
I can't find an email to contact apple for them to help me!
Some one help me out! ASAP
    thanx

Beeping sounds are a RAM problem.
Did you recently install new RAM or mess with it? Reseat it firmly or return the original RAM, or get it exchanged.
Perhaps you installed the wrong specification of RAM, it might still partially function, but you get error beeps.
Use the Crucial.com online checker, it will give the right RAM specs.
If you didn't do anything, then take the machine in for service, run a #3 Hardware Check or upgrade the RAM and/or reseat it firmly it might have come loose somehow.

  • Macbook Pro "freezes" on Start up and Beeps - HELP!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro (Christmas 2011), and today it was installing updates. It stated that it needed to restart to complete the updates, so I confirmed it. It shut down fine, but then didn't start up again on it's own. I waited for about an hour before manually starting the computer by pressing the power button. It did the opening chime and then the logo screen came up, but then it started a series of beeps (beep, beep, beep-------beep, beep, beep-------beep, beep, beep, etc.) along with accompying blinking bqattery light (it is fully charged). It froze on the logo screen and continued to beep for a half an hour before I forced it to shut down (control+command+power button). I tried restarting it in safe mode (holding the shift button down during startup), but it only resulted in the computer freezing on the logo screen for about five minutes before shutting itself off (no beeping or light that time, though). I went through my instruction manual as well as online searches to see if maybe I could somehow restore the computer to factory settings and I CAN get it to get into the Disk Utility section (holding down the option button during startup), but I'm absolutely terrified of erasing something I shouldn't, or have it all be for naught.
So, what's my best bet here? Is there a way I can fix this, at home and safely, or should I get my warrantee out and take it back to the store (Best Buy) and let them try to fix it?
    Desperate for help,
    Vanessa

It is better to take the MBP back to the store. They may be able to help you.
    Best.

  • Powerbook g4 Battery Problem--Help!

I've had a Powerbook G4 (15 inch) since 2005 so it's clearly out of warranty. It was bought right before the charger was changed on the Powerbooks. My battery was part of the recall group so this battery was new as of January 2007.
My battery will not charge. When I turn on my computer, my time and date is March 24th 2001 (and will fix itself in a few minutes of turn on). My charger will turn orange for about...10 minutes before turning green. However, my battery is not charging at all. AT ALL.
I've tried resetting PRAM (mind you, I know what these terms mean only bc of googling due to this problem) by pulling battery and power and holding down power for 5 seconds then turning on. OPTION + COMMAND + P + R nor OPTION + COMMAND + O + F DO NOT work at all. They do nothing. Tried each about ten times--nothing. Tried a different charger--still the same problem. The battery worked as of week ago but the battery died while the laptop was asleep.

Hi, save, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Reset the Power Management Unit in your Powerbook and see whether the failure to charge persists, as I fully expect it will. If it does, your battery with only 45 cycles on it is clearly defective — a common problem among the batteries that were provided under the replacement program.
Take your Powerbook, adapter and battery to an Apple Store Genius Bar and demonstrate the failure to charge. The Genius will probably reset the Power Manager again and then test using a different battery and a different adapter. When s/he concludes that your battery is defective, you should be offered another free replacement battery.
