PowerBook 17"  window views do not stick.

For several years I've set window view from Finder > View to List view then went on to view option and chose set for all windows. It stuck. The I installed three pieces of software. Two I have since removed.
PocketMac for a Blackberry 8330 Phone sold from Alltel
Missing Sync for Blackberry (purchased)
Then the latest Quicktime 7.6 update through system updater.
Now ever time I start, restart, or Logout/Login some (but not all) folders revert to icon view, unsorted and uncleaned up.
I've removed pocket Mac and Missing sync.
can't revert to 7.5.x to much to deal with.
I've reset PRAM. by option command P&R and by removing battery unplugging power, opening holding power switch down.
To check for a bad Pram battery I've removed power, removed regular Battery and let it set for 20 minutes. then replace battery, and power. everything sticks.
I'm at wits end.

I think I have a bad PRAM Battery.
Here's what I did.
Today I had to go out of house for few hour.
I went to date and time and checked item to set date time automatically.
So I: removed Battery (regular Battery)
unplugged the Power Supply.
went out for the few hours.
Came Back while battery still out I opened lid held down power button for 6 seconds.
Closed lid
Replaced Battery
Started up computer.
Copter said after booting up date set to time before ... Some application may not work correctly.
I had done this before but had not unchecked automatically set date and time.
What get me is that on my G4-500 sing OSX.3.9 when PRAM battery went dead I had to set the Location and the date style and Currency style as well.
On this the only, date and time appears outwardly.
I supposed the windows positions are affected by battery.
Going to be a PIA to have the Battery Changed went FixIt site and they had 6 pages of instruction on just how to get to Battery. Believe it will be cheaper for me to have it done, although That's what I use to do for a living. Opinion?

  • Issues with Finder - window 'view type' not sticking, picture backgrounds

    Since my upgrade from Snow Leopard, I've noticed a few minor problems with the Finder in Lion.
    Can anyone confirm if these are known bugs in Lion?
    1. At random, certain folders will not remember their view type anymore. Some do, some don't. Logging in as root and changing them there has fixed some, but others keep reverting back to a "default". It happens at any point while I am using the system, even without logging out or restarting. I've changed folder view types and come back 10 minutes later and they've changed on me! I used to have this problem with Tiger and Leopard, but not Snow Leopard. Seems it's back with Lion 10.7.0.
    2. Under Snow Leopard I had various JPG and PNG photos used as backgrounds for various folders in icon view. Under Lion, almost all of these backgrounds now only occupy one small corner of the window. They are not being displayed at their full size. The fact that they worked in Snow Leopard indicates there are no problems with the photos themselves.
    3. Various problems with grid layout in icon view. Dragging an icon to it's proper position in the grid will often not "stick". i.e. I line it up perfectly with the grid yet the icon goes flying off half way across the screen to another position. The Finder seems a lot less forgiving than Snow Leopard in this regard.
    Since everything was runing perfectly for me in Snow Leopard I assume these are bugs that will hopefully be ironed out in future system updates.

    In IPhoto 11 I have made an album and rearrange the photosin the order I require them. When export the album to allow me to burn them todisk to be viewed in Windows they do not maintain the same order. What am I doingwrong?

    When you sort the Album in iphoto are you sorting manually? Or by date of the photos?
    When you sort in the Finder how are are you sorting?
    Here's one way to do what you're trying to do:
    Create your Album and sort the pics as you want them. Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
    Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
    Sort on Filename in the Finder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.

    Is there a solution?

    I've tried re-installing my iTunes software and searched throughout the forums and elsewhere without so far being able to determine how to resolve this difficulty.
    In case my original question formulation was not clear, in the past I could click on the header (while viewing my iTunes library in 'Songs' view) and cycle through "Album", "Album by Artist", in either ascending or descending order, and so forth.
    Now I'm only able to chose between "Album by Artist", either ascending or descending. There is no "Album" view option available to me, as there has always been in the past.
    I'm completely puzzled as to how this happened. Perhaps I inadvertently hit the wrong key combination while using iTunes and it changed something, I just don't know.
    I would really appreciate it if any other forum members have suggestions as to how I might fix this!

  • Strange Content Viewer problem: downloads do not 'stick'

    I had a folio that  needed to be downloaded it appeared after updating to the latest Content Viewer on my iPads (Retina, mini Retina and standard iPad2).
    For some reason after quiting Content Viewer on my iPads and starting the Content Viewer app again, tapping to see that folio resulted in a empty screen on my iPad. It seemed that Content Viewer app crashed.
    After quiting the app again and restarting the app , it said the folio was in the cloud. I needed to download again.
    From that point on you can repeat those steps again and again: download; read; close Content Viewer app; start Content Viewer app; read folio: empty and crash;  restart Content Viewer: folio gone from iPad and needs to be downloaded again. Repeat.
    I tried removing the downloaded version from the app and re-download: same result.
    I deleted the Content Viewer from my iPads and reinstalled from App Store: same result.
    I then completely rebuild the folio in InDesign under another CC account. Logged in on my iPad under that account, downloaded the rebuild folio... And I can repeat it all over again... The download does not 'stick' and crashes the Viewer app.
    Then I tried this with completly new fresh folios from fresh new InDesign pages... Same result!
    But... On my iPad2 it seems fine. On my Retina iPads it goes wrong. Also covers are missing and I see double entries (it shows already downloaded folios!).
    There are no renditions, just 1024 PDF file. Tried it with v26 and v29 compatibility, makes no difference.
    I am stumped... I have no clue where to even begin fixing this other than the steps I already took mentioned above...
    Could non-ACSII characters in the title be the cause ( it has a slash and copyright sign)? No, that seems to make no difference...
    Bug...?

    I'm still affected by this. What is the status?
    I have a folio with no upper ASCI characters in its name or any article names. created with Folio viewer version v26. My iPad has the latest ACV (3.4.5) on ipad Retina with IOS 7.1.
    Exactly the same symptoms same as described by others - After viewing my folio, if I close the ACV viewer with swipe up on IOS7 and I restart the ACV, I get a grey blank screen & crash, and have to close the app with Swipe up. When I restart ACV, the library updates and I must download the folio again. Then cycle starts again...after download competes I can view the folio....Basically the folio is never saved to the iPad, after its first viewing.
    The Folio has an autoplay slideshow in its first article. Don't know if there is anything else relevant I can add to help?

  • Spaces not "sticking"

    Not a big deal, but I noticed since SL that a couple of my programs are not sticking to their assigned "Space."
    For example, both ICal and Mail are assigned to space one, but they keep going over to Space two. The assignments are still on Space One (and I am not moving them over manually).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    My experience with the problem being described in some of the posts is as follows:
    Opening a Pages document from the Finder window (Pages is assigned to space 5. Finder window in this example is in space 1)
    1. If Pages is not open - double-clicking the document will open Pages, move me to space 5, and display the document (as expected).
    2. If Pages is open - double-clicking (alt-click Open With) the document will open the document in my current space (space 1 in this example) - not expected at all.
    Another issue, even more odd/annoying:
    This has to do with dialog windows. ex. PhotoShop (space 2), DreamWeaver (space 1). Attempting to change hexadecimal code in DreamWeaver file to match a PhotoShop color. Open the color picker in PhotoShop -> copy the hex-code (color picker still open) -> switch to space 1 via keyboard -> here's the strangeness.
    Sometimes - clicking on the DreamWeaver document will send me back to space 2 automatically: at which point I cannot close/select the color picker window - unless I enter expose and come out of it - even then, sometimes clicking on the color picker results in flipping back to space 1 - at which point entering spaces view (where all spaces are visible) and selecting space 2 usually fixes the issue).
    Other times - I can edit the DreamWeaver document just fine, but when I go back to PhotoShop I still have to enter expose and come out of it to close the color picker (see above).
    Another example would be pasting things from eMail (space 4) into a web browser (space 1). If you're familiar with drop-in menus to login to a server which requires username and password (not a web form - but a dialog box) you might be able to try this yourself:
    Opening the eMail from Mail. Select the desired text -> command+c -> keyboard shortcut (option+arrow up - for this example) -> navigate to website with dialog -> set username field active -> command+v -> option+arrow down (space 4) -> select new text -> command+c -> option+arrow up (space 1), dialog box is still open, make password field active -> automatically get shifted back to space 4.
    Again, this is a bit more of a hassle (because I have dialog boxes open in a lot of programs and copy and paste between applications & spaces a lot), but the other issue would probably be easier to isolate and fix.

  • Making a Windows 7 Installation USB Stick

    This is a discussion of making a bootable Windows 7 Installation USB-stick Media. It might apply to making other USB connected "Disks" like Smartcards bootable too.
    I recently had to do this (a Laptop with no build-in DVD drive and no USB DVD drive around). And it turned out to be surprisingly simple, using nothing but build in Windows tools from the Disk. I only found
    this german langauge guide and nothing in english (but I might just have searched after the wrong terms, google has been wierd regarding langauge lately), so I thought I write it up (along with some problems I ran into).
    Making a USB-Stick into a bootable Windows 7 (and propably Vista) Media is a 3 step process:
    1. Create a Active, Primary, FAT32 Partition of 4+ GB on the stick
    2. use bootsect.exe from Windows Disk to create the MBR and Partition Boot Record for that Partition
    3. Copy all files from the Disk to said Partition
    4. Test if it boots
    Detail analysis:
    Step 1 is so simple I doubt it needs explanations. Create enough free space on the USB disk (at worst delete all previous Partitions). Make a Priamry Partition of 4+ GiB. Mark it as Active. Format it in FAT32. The Guide used Diskpart,
    but this step can be done with any Partition Tool under any Windows, Linux, UNIX or DOS.
    While the choice of FAT32 seems a bit outdated, theye propably did not gave the relevant bootlaoder the ability to read NTFS. Or maybe they just though FAT32 is enough for a media that is mostly read. I have not tried what happens if I format it in NTFS, but
    it might be possible.
    Step 2 was the only tricky part. You need the programm "boot\bootsect.exe" from the Installation Media. It also must be run on a non-UEFI booted OS (otherwise it cancels out).
    I had a Windows 8 on a new Laptop so I had a UEFI booted system. Luckily I also had a VMWare Windows 7 lying around. I just assigned the Windows 7 ISO image to the Windows 7 VM, then connected the USB drive to the host.
    Once you have the USB stick in a a proper Windows mount the Parttion you created under 1 under any driveletter (should happen automatically under Windows), and open a console as Administrator (asumes DVD is drivletter is D: and the USB stick's partition
    ins Driveletter E:):
    //Go into the boot directory on the Install DVD
    D:
    cd boot
    //You should see a command promt like "D:\BOOT>"
    //Run bootsect.exe
    bootsect.exe /nt60 d:
    Step 3 is to either copy the contents of the DVD media (copy and paste) or the Image (Mount into Virtual DVD Drive and copy/paste, unpack ISO images contents) into the partition.
    How does this compare to other Distribution ways?
    To DVD:
    There is no need for a DVD drive. Even if a bootable USB-DVD drive is avalible, the Stick or Card will only need only USB port (most USB drives need 2 Ports due the 1 Ampere energy need of the drives).
    Flash Media has no seek times and much better throughput (the old weakpoint of any Disk and DVD/CD in particular)
    A FAT32 partition is inherently writeable. So modifications to the "Installation media" like Implementing Service Packs and other Windwos Updates, Modifying ei.cfg/preactivation/setup answer files, implementing special Disk/RAID drivers into the Windows
    PE or adding stuff that should be installed with Windows is easy (and do not requrie reburning a 4 GiB Image file).
    Since it only needs a 4 GiB partition, on a big USB stick there would still be place for other Data Partitions
    Since it relies on old techniques (Generic Bootloader + Active Primary Partition + partition boot loader), multiple Installation media on a big enough stick might be feasible (with a more advanced bootloader like GRUB). Have to test that part.
    However, the cost/media is a lot higher then a DVD. So if you need multiple Medias it will propably be cheaper to use the old DVD approach.
    Due to the needs of bootsec.exe, first creating the media can be more difficulty then just burning an image. But once it is bootable this programm is no longer needed.
    To PXE/network Distrubution:
    If you have the nessesary setup already (DHCP/PXE Server, powerfull network), the USB stick is likely inferior. The USB stick should beat a 100 MBIT Network easily, but will propably be beaten by a 1 GBIT Network. Network isntallation uses existing infrastructure
    (that you need for other reasons anyway) so the cost per media is even lower then the DVD.
    The PXE way also has even better modifyability - sending out different answer files or even automatically booting different images based on the Compuers MAC adress are tried techniques.
    If you lack the nessesary setup, the USB stick is a lot easier to implement and a lot easier to transport.
    Advanced things:
    Need to check if the partition could be formated as NTFS. I prefer a Journalling Filesystem for my USB-sticks.
    Need to check if using a advanced boot manager techniques (like Grub or modifciations to the BCD of the Windows PE) allows me to put multiple install media on one Stick (with one primary partition per "media"). Especially combining the x32/x86 and
    x64 Windows Installation Media would be worthwhile. As would be inlcuding a Window 8 or Vista installation media.
    Current Step 3 and 2 can propably be switched. I see no reason bootsect could not run from the USB stick as it runs from the DVD (it only accesses the MBR and
    VBR of the Disk, areas not in use by Windows)
    Steps 1 through 3 might be possible from the Windows PE environment. If so, only a computer with legacy BIOS boot would be nessesary (no actuall installation).
    Windows 7 can be installed on a (U)EFI system, but I have not checked if I can use the boot from teh stick on such a Computer. Latest for Windows 8 Media UEFI compatibilty is nessesary.

    Windows 7 can be installed on a (U)EFI system, but I have not checked if I can use the boot from teh stick on such a Computer. Latest for Windows 8 Media UEFI compatibilty is nessesary.
    I converted the stick to NTFS using the convert.exe and it continued booting. So chances are high they only choose FAT32 in the example because no feature of NTFS was per nessesary in a "almost only reading" scenario like installation media.
    The second part depends on the BIOS. I have a more advanced one where I can choose legacy boot options (like USB stick) in the boot option menu even when the default setting is UEFI, as long as I don't need Secure boot (wich I do not).
    Another question arose: Windows 7 has the Kernel/BCD level ability to boot from .VHD Files. The only thing preventing version below corporate from using this feature is a license check that is run just before the login (so way after the booting has been
    completed).
    Starting with 3.0 Windows PE is based on the kernel of Windows 7. So the instlaltion system might have the ability to boot from .VHD too and might have no such check in place. If so, I could put both versions of the Windows 7 installer into .VHD, reducing the
    need to have physical primary partitions for those.
    Windows bootprocess vs. Linux boot process under BIOS:
    The BIOS goes over all the boot media. If it finds one with a MBR, that one is executed and the BIOS part of the boot process is officially over.
     -> Under Windows the MBR contains the "generic boot loader". A simple piece of code as old as BIOS (25 Years) that looks for the primary partition with "Active" Flag on "it's" disk. If it finds one, the Partition Boot Record of that parition is executed.
    The MBR has done it's part
        -> NTLDR (NT too 2000), this one reads the boot.ini file and gives/executeds apropirate options
        -> BOOTMGR (Vista, 7), this one reads the BCD files
          -> Since Windows 7 BOOTMGR can also chainload the Partition Boot Record that is inside a .VHD File
        -> Wicher was used in Windows 3.X/95/98/ME
    Higher versions can chainload lower versions, but must be designed for this and (re)installed in the proper "order".
    The sometimes odd behavior that Windows 7 tries to keep 100 MiB in a seperate primary partition is there to have proper places for later additions to the BOOTMGR settings. Specifically it allows multiple BOOTMGR OS to use/edit the same BOOTMGR instace without
    running into problems with "whose partition is active?" (since it is always the System Reserved one). It's not disimilar to having an extra /boot partition in Linux or how a GRUB's stage 2 works.
    -> Under a typical Grub Legacy the MBR contains the Stage 1. It directly reads the Stage 2 from the proper partition/file system with a hardcoded path, but due to size limit of the MBR cannot do more. In some cases it starts a stage 1.5 wich has more
    space to do work (63 sectors between MBR and first partition), but I never used this Setup
        -> Stage 2 loads the Grub Configuration from the disk. From here it depends on what OS you want to boot.
            -> For Linux or Unix the kernel is started directly.
            -> Any Windows OS up to 7 can be booted using the chainloader command. For the OS this is identical to having the partition choosen by the Generic Bootloader.
    While it can be chainloaded by the Generic Bootloader from the active primary partition, GRUB and thus Linux has no
    requirement for any Primary Partitions. Stage 1 is designed to directly access the specific File System containng the Stage 2. In fact it does not even need to reside on the same disk (as the Generic Bootloader has to).
    If one does not need the Active Flag to control the Generic Bootloader (because a proper Stage 1 is installed in MBR) it is adviseable to mark wichever Windows Partition is chainloaded as active (up to Vista at least I had very odd behavior if the Windows boot
    partition was not marked active, down to randomly shredded Partition boot managers).
    After running a Windows Setup usually the Stage 1 has to be restored, as Windwos Setup will always write it's Generic Bootloader in the MBR. In order to get "rid" of a Grub all one has to do is overwrite the MBR with the Generic Bootloader and set the active
    flag properly.

  • APEX_APPLICATION_FILES: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

    Hello,
    As my first APEX task I am attempting the upload/download demo on http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32472_01/doc/appdev.300/b32469/up_dn_files.htm
    The ultimate goal is to store PDF files in the database.
    In order to complete step 1: To create an application using the Create Application Wizard:
    - I first created a user from SYSTEM called 'myapp'
    - Next I logged into 'myapp' to continue the exercise. (I am wondering if that is where I am going wrong... If so, please clarify)
    - Knowing that I would want to save the upload to a table I created a table with a BLOB
    I did the steps for the upload and ran the application - no errors to there.
    Next I needed to "To create a report on APEX_APPLICATION_FILES:".
    I started the wizard as instructed. When I pasted the SELECT ... FROM APEX_APPLICATION_FILES, I got the table or view does not exist. A quick review of the TABLES tab shows only the tables that I created. Not any of the system tables or views.
    I logged back in as SYSTEM and reviewed the 'rights' given the user 'myapp'. All were checked.
    I knew nothing of Oracle when I installed XE, so I took defaults or whatever the install doc said to do. Is that part of the problem? It is clear that I do not have rights to see that table, but I also do not see the table when logged in as SYSTEM.
    Any insight appreciated,
    Rick

    Regarding the code links, this one looks like what I need:
    DECLARE
    l_bfile BFILE;
    l_blob BLOB;
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO tab1 (col1)
    VALUES (empty_blob())
    RETURN col1 INTO l_blob;
    l_bfile := BFILENAME('IMAGES', 'MyImage.gif');
    DBMS_LOB.fileopen(l_bfile, Dbms_Lob.File_Readonly);
    DBMS_LOB.loadfromfile(l_blob, l_bfile, DBMS_LOB.getlength(l_bfile));
    DBMS_LOB.fileclose(l_bfile);
    COMMIT;
    END;
    Is the 'BFILENAME' function that causes the 'get a filename' dialog box of Windows to open for the user to find which file to upload?
    I'm going off to look for a newer version of APEX, thanks.
